SKUNKS AND BATS AND NARCOLEPTIC CATS, OH MY! As if being struck by lightning wasn’t bad enough. I spent a month in a coma. Of course that was when I was a teenager. It left me with some pretty unusual abilities. For instance, I can find just about anything or anyone. Oh, and I can see ghosts, too! I pick up extra cash working with the local P.D. I’m their go-to girl when they have someone they need to find. Despite all of this, my life is pretty boring — that is until the very hot Detective Nick Cavanaugh came into my life. Boy did we get off on the wrong foot. I was asked to pair up with Detective Cavanaugh to look for three missing children. Did I mention that he doesn’t believe in my superpowers? When we discover the children have been kidnapped, the search takes us up into the mountains and old mining towns. With time running out and my abilities going wonky, Nick is ready to drop me from the case. Pffft! As if that will stop me! —Andromeda Spencer

I think I have found my favorite character. I enjoy almost all the characters I read about, but Andromeda or Rommey as she is known has to be my favorite by far. She is witty, sarcastic, and she is just a normal girl minus the whole I can find people or lost things heck throw in the occasional ghost.
Rommy's family is by far normal her mother is in a coven and her father believes in the stars how Rommey turned out to be normal is well her stars must have been lined. I found myself trying to saying her name properly and I couldn't so I am glad she had a nickname that was easy to say. Rommy helps the local PD in her town to help solve cases when they need her which I think is pretty rad.
Rommy gets a case one that will push her limit on her powers and in the process explore her feelings with Mr. Yummy Detective real name Nick who is possessive and sexy all rolled up into one. I don't think he realizes that trying to control or "protect" Rommy is what is going to happen. The chemistry between both of these characters had me in fits of laughter especially the whole shower scene that went on that left Rommy a blubbering hot mess.
There is humor, some action, some attraction all mixed in with this story and it went together very very well. The author has done a great job with capturing your attention from the first page and leaves you wanting more of Andromeda and her powers along with her narcoleptic cat which was a first for me to read about.
The author has done a great job with character building, and descriptions overall she has an awesome writing style. I do hope to read more as I want more of the humor.
Imagine getting struck by lightening, surviving, and then finding out that it has changed you. That's exactly how our main character has obtained her new gifts. Whether they are psychic in nature, or more like superhero style, I love characters with abilities of any kind! In this case, she is a psychic, and is using it to help solve cases that need some extra help. This story was so much fun to listen to. I really liked how real the main character felt to me. She wasn't supposed to be perfect. She made mistakes, and even got sprayed by a skunk! I found her to be funny, and even a little goofy at times. There was a romance, but it was more a subplot. I was happy with that, as I don't usually like romance as the main focus in books. I really enjoyed this audiobook, and I will be checking out the next book when it's available. **I was provided with this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I got the audio version of this book because the prose just asked to be read aloud. I'm so glad I did. It was fun story with great characters who were very lovable. There were a few niggles for me though. First, a cop who manhandles a consultant and invades her shower is not being an alpha male he's being a bad cop. All the men in Romi's life (the young ones, anyway) behave poorly but if she is attracted to them, like the cop hero, its supposed to be okay, while the others are labelled as pushy slime balls? And though I loved all the zany characters and the insights into the life of the heroine, I kept thinking that she should have been more focused on saving the missing kids, especially after she's seen such horrendous outcomes for them. But over all this was excellent escapist entertainment and the narration was perfect.
Parker has a charming, relaxed writing style that immediately drew me into the story. She has created a feisty fun character in Andromeda (Rommey). Rommey's sassy attitude and descriptions of her unusual family, especially Nanna, made me chuckle several times as I was reading. Indeed it was Rommey's character and family background that made this book such fun. An interesting plot with good characterisation throughout. If there is a second book planned, I will be reading it. A well produced, enjoyable read.
I didn't even finish the first chapter! I really, really disliked the narrator (Holly Adams), she sounded like she was reading to a bunch of two-year-olds, and it annoyed me so much I had to stop it. I'm not giving this a rating because I didn't finish the story, but if I could give just the narrator a rating, I'd give her 1 star; if this were a little kids book it would be different.
I wish to thank Audiobookblast.com and the author for the opportunity to try this audiobook.
I had come to the end of the latest Mattie Winston Mystery by Annelise Ryan. I needed a cosy friend. So I was excited when I found the book Lighting Strikes. Andromeda Spencer, the protagonist, sounded like a fun character in this new mystery series.
The plot: Andromeda was struck by lightning and woke from a coma with Extrasensory Perception. She can find anything that has been lost and sees ghosts. Andromeda works with the police locating missing persons. Enter Detective Nick Cavanaugh. He is looking for three missing children, and he does not believe in Mediums or ghosts!
An exciting opening was spoilt in chapter three when we meet the “attractive” Detective Cavanaugh. During their first meeting, he manhandled Andromeda, forced her out in a storm (and she has a fear of storms) and walked into her bathroom while she took a shower and saw her naked. His response? “You can see me naked”. Within 24 hours a sick Andromeda is being taken to a recovery bay in his arms, and he has a pet name for her.
The book continues in this vein. Within 48 hours of knowing Andromeda, he enters her home without permission. Then he enters her bedroom to wake her because she is late for their appointment. Of course, she sleeps nearly nude. There is also much aggression between Andromeda and the Detective for comfort; Example, “grabbing my arm and swinging me around to face him” followed by “pulling me closer to him.” From Andromeda, ‘I darted forward intent on smacking him upside his head he sidestepped me and slung his arm around my neck dragging me into a gentle headlock,’ and ‘ I wanted nothing more than to punch his lights out.’
Detective Cavanaugh is supposed to be an Alpha male. If the book were real life, his behaviour would be bullying, and he would be up for an assault and battery charge. The worse line in the book refers to the Detective – “If you can overlook the Alpha behaviour I think he is a good guy.”
I believe the author tried to create a humorous love – hate attraction. It does not work. Andromeda refers to it as a “weird relationship”. I call it an abusive relationship!
Detective Cavanaugh was not the only ‘caveman’. All the male characters were dominating and bullying except Andromeda’s father. Even a character called Anthony that Andromeda meets for the first time grabs her arm to stop her walking away. It’s not cute. Abuse is a blight on our society. Later in the book, Anthony deliberately causes pain to Andromeda by painfully pinching her breasts.
The book fell far short of its plot line. It was interesting in places. I would have given two stars but for the abuse throughout. The constant violence was supposed to be playful. It made for uncomfortable reading and detracted from three missing children. I forgot at one point they were part of the story.
Sexual Content Rating: Medium Language Content Rating: Medium Violent Content Rating: Medium Will I read the second? Not likely —– My rating system (* = star) 0* Could not finish this book 1* Finished the book but didn’t like it. 2* Finished the book it was okay. 3* A good read worth your time. 4* A very good read often with a novel concept or unusual plot. 5* An exceptionally good read. A prominent example of the genre.
This book was exactly what I'd been craving, what I needed! The lightness, humor, and matter of fact style was perfect to lift my mood while still providing an intriguing plotline and multidimensional characters. It touched on some serious subjects and always kept my mind engaged and guessing. Sometimes I feel a book is "dumbed down" in the effort to be light-hearted, but this wasn't the case here. I wouldn't doubt that for some people, the style is too silly and doesn't hold a candle to other mystery novels in terms of depth and complexity. But I believe it perfectly served its purpose in being fun and quirky. It's not trying to be anything else, you can't compare!
In the end, Lightning Strikes not only allowed me to have a break from "real life" and get lost in Andromeda's world - exactly what I wanted - but it wasn't all fluffy clouds and unicorns either, like many books of the same genre. This makes it for me one of those rare books that I covet, because you can never seem find them when you need them or try to look for them. When you're feeling sick, in pain (like me), had a bad breakup, or whatever rotten burden life has thrown at you, THIS is the book you want. Not every book has that magical formula that can actually make me forget or even distract me from my chronic pain, but this one does and I only wish there were many more in the series so I could stock them up like medicine, haha.
I'd also like to add that I read this in audiobook form (perfect for headache sufferers) and I can't imagine a better pairing of narrator and book. I highly recommend it! REEEALLY loved this one! Finished it in an indecent amount of time. Andromeda is struck by lightning at nearly 17 and in a coma for a month, wakes up with paranormal abilities and no awfulness. Now nurses, just suspend your disbelief that there were no other problems and enjoy the fantasy like other folks. Including the part where she works with the local LEOs for the next 10 years as a paid consultant. Most of her family is a bit off, and she does have a true best friend. Romance comes in the form of a hunky detective who is new to her and her narcoleptic cat, but the suspense is right out of the daily news. Tons of situational humor to have you snorting your coffee, and some of the one-liners are priceless. Holly Adams is such a great fit here, and really nails the performance! When I saw the above lead-in as a description of the book, I couldn't pass this one up. To add to my interest, the main character is named Andromeda. Hmm..this book might just have something unique to offer. This is one of the most enjoyable short novels I've read in awhile. Ms. Parker introduces the reader to Andromeda shortly before she gets struck by lightning. This is a life changing event for Rommy. Can you imagine waking up from a coma and being able to see and talk to dead people?
I think if this had been a full length novel, I would have rated it with 5 stars. I'm glad there is more to come in the series. It will be interesting to see how Rommy uses her ability next and to find out if the budding romance with Det. Cavanaugh progresses. Just to let readers know, there is no graphic sex, violence or language in this book.
First let me say I have not laughed and enjoy myself with a book since Heather Blake potion series. Andromeda and Nick are quite a couple. I love the humor and the tension between. I also love the story behind it. I did not see the bad guy coming till it was to late. I actually thought it was someone else and that doesn't happen often to me. I do have to say Andromeda powers are very strong. I found the story behind how this happen to her interesting and also her relationship with Johnson. I love all of her family and friends. Her sister was a hoot and so was Kelly. Her grandmothers story was so heart felt made me want to cry when they were dancing. This was a wonderful book and if you need something light with a little romance and mystery I recommend this book. I finished it one sitting.
I absolutely loved 'Lightning Strikes'. The storyline pulled me in from the beginning and did not let go. I literally could not put it down. I loved the humor throughout. I laughed out loud quite a few times. The characters were a great cast of humorous personalities. Andromeda is so damn funny. I loved her character. And Nana, she is hysterical. The way the story played out was thrilling. I can not wait to read more in this series. After reading Theresa Parker's work, I will definitely read more from her. An awesome add to your tbr list. Definitely recommended.
This story was entertaining with enough humor to keep it from becoming dark and the narration was excellent. The main character was a bit difficult to figure out, one minute she was strong and the next she was wanting to be taken care of. There were extra characters in the book that seemed to have no purpose to the story unless the author plans to make this a series. I would certainly want to listen to future books if that were to happen. I loved the story itself. Being struck by lightning and having psychic powers afterwards, Andromeda struggles with how far to push herself and working with a hot police detective. The only real problem was incorrect punctuation, misspelled words or correct words used wrong. Other than that, which is why I only gave three stars, I liked the book so much, I'm going to get the next one. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
"This audiobook was provided by the author at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com."I really enjoyed the quirky girl Adromeda who had supernatural powers. The was a little insecure about her relationship with Nick which lead to many funny incidents.I thought that the mystery of the missing children was well developed with little bumps that kept you reading. I would to read more of this series.
I will be reading more from this series. The characters make an interesting bunch, and although dementia isn't a topic to be laughed at, I kept waiting for Nana's next appearance. A bit better proofreading would have helped. Witches and pagans both know the difference between "alter" and "altar".
I really enjoyed this book this book Andromeda is a great character wish I knew a person I wish you were in a fiction character was a lot of fun I look forward to reading anymore of her adventures thank you
I loved the book. I received this book for free for an honest review. I can not wait for the other books to come out. Enjoyed the story line and the different people in the story.
