Kaylea loves to hear from readers, so please feel free to drop me a line and say hello.
The team - "So here they were: a former Ranger with a hothead reputation he'd battled all his life; a former Delta member who was personally attached to one of the hostages; one out of action former SEAL who should still be in his Basra hospital bed; a CIA spook who Ben had never seen in combat; and a civilian female communications contractor".
Book 3 focuses on Ben and Sam. It starts with a slight overlap over the end of book 2 but this time from Samarra Wallace's (Sam) point of view. Having been threatened she goes into hiding, not even trusting her colleagues in the CIA with her whereabouts. This is exactly what the terrorist Tehrazzi wanted, he wants to undermine her with her colleagues so they question her loyalties. Her cousin Neveah works for Doctors without borders and is kidnapped along with her colleagues and a timer on her rescue is set with a hostage being killed every 24 hours by Assoud,Tehrazzi's bloodthirsty bodyguard. Ben Sinclair, "a bad-ass Ranger with a gigantic chip on his shoulder, a prankster with a wicked sense of humour", thinks she's manipulating him. His heart tells him she's innocent but logic tells him otherwise and we see a hard side to Ben when he's usually the joker of the pack, "trust is relative in this business, Sam, and, ultimately pointless". Luke approaches the situation with his usual cold, unfeeling view, pulling Sam into their dangerous mission in order to prove herself and help catch Tehrazzi, a man "whose name made folks' blood run cold". Kaylea Cross knows how to make unexpected sex scenes sensual and exciting: in a previous books they were in a tent hiding from the enemy with their team mates nearby, this time in a cave. It sounds ridiculous but it is steamy hot. Book 4 focuses on Rhys Sinclair and Dr Neveah Adams. It sees the remarkable recovery of Rhys who was lucky to survive the previous mission and Luke not fit for duty but ignoring the signs as he will do anything to catch Tehrazzi, it becoming a death wish. Luke's son, from book 1, is getting married and they pick up chatter saying Tehrazzi intends to attack at the wedding, and, attack Neveah who is in town for a medical conference. Luke calls his team together to provide protection and they keep the threats secret from everyone else. Rhys believes "he wasn't cut out for relationships, let alone one that ended with happily-ever-after" and Neveah believes the attraction she feels for Rhys is one sided, his poker face never gives anything away. The surprise in this book is that you never know who may be the enemy; the leader of the cell is someone you'd never suspect. The scene in the lift is terrifying, I felt helpless reading it sat with my hand over my mouth not knowing how she'd survive. When Rhys finally breaks down in his brothers arms it's heartbreaking, "Rhys never cried. He'd always been the strong one", the bond between the two fraternal twins is beautiful. Book 5 is at last about Luke and his ex wife Emily. Luke is cold, hardened by his life in the military, the only time we see a softer side to him is when he's with Em, she stands up to him and isn't intimidated as others are. They may have been apart for the last 20 years but "the hunger was there as it always was, a pool of gasoline waiting for a match strike". Em is ill and Tehrazzi is a threat to her. All the team plus the women all go to Beirut so they can keep each other safe while the hunt for Tehrazzi continues. The love between Luke and Em is obvious and Em bravely shows Luke what she wants.
As with all Kaylea Cross' books, the narrative clearly describes scenes you can picture, the drama is like watching a 3D movie, you can feel the mortar attacks, hear the bullets, smell the blood and fear. Again, as with her other books, the characters are substantial, intriguing and interact well with each other. I'm at a loss now, having read all 3 series of romantic suspense by this author, what do I read now?
This should be a mini series! Thought I was reading a script made for HBO. The action, the romance, the honor and courage of these men and women will grab your heart and squeeze. I will be Binge rereading this series in the future. I had Kaylee Cross as a favorite before this series, now she rules as a Master Writer! This was not a copycat of her other stories this was fresh and pulled from world events. The chemistry from the hero's and heroine's were awesome. Tears were free flowing at the end of Luke's and Emily's story. A. great. Read.
This series started with Luke and Emily's sone Rayne and it ends with Luke and Emily's story.
I love love love military suspense and this series is full of action, adventure, steamy sexy military men and the women who bring them to their knees.
I think Luke and Emily's story is my favourite needing to wait until the last book made it even better I love that after all those years they got back together finally.
