Two-Headed Chicken

Two-Headed Chicken: Chaos in the Cosmic Library

Rate this book
It’s nonstop goofy comedy as Two-Headed Chicken invades other books in this third graphic novel adventure from New York Times best-selling creator Tom Angleberger.

Our zany hero, Two-Headed Chicken, has traveled the multiverse using the AstroCap and romped through the chronoverse using the TimeCap. Now they dare to ask: What happens if they use both caps at the same time? Answer: Chaos! Unfortunately, the chaos is so ridiculous that the reader slams their book closed, trapping the double-noggined main character in eternal darkness. But wait! Two-Headed Chicken escapes into the Cosmic Library, which contains every book ever written. Now, still pursued by the chicken-hungry moose Kernel Antlers, Two-Headed Chicken hops their way through a parade of familiar titles, from a hundred-acre wood to a kissy vampire novel, interacting with the befuddled characters and leaving mayhem in their wake. With interactive puzzles and activities and wall-to-wall jokes, Tom Angleberger delivers another absurdist delight in this madcap series.

Picking up where book two of this zany series left off, the Two-Headed Chicken is still being pursued by the malevolent Kernel Antlers, a giant green moose whose only goal is to capture and fry them.  In their panic to get away, each of the chicken siblings uses their own escape mechanism (the Timecap and the Astrocap) simultaneously, enabling them to cross both the multiverse and the chronoverse, resulting in … chaos! They bounce quickly through a variety of settings and right into an argument with the Reader, who, frustrated at the apparent lack of plot, slams the book closed, leaving the poultry protagonists in eternal darkness.  Their mentor, Duckter Whooo (a two-headed hybrid duck-owl), appears with some advice and library cards.  With those cards, and with the aid of the still-irritated Reader, they are now able to travel through the Cosmic Library, where they can interact with any story ever written in any universe.   They ‘shoop’ from The Poo at Pooh Corner, to Charlotte’s Web of Lies, to The Two-Headed Chobbit, on their quest for a plot to appease the Reader and escape the moose.  They encounter a variety of semi-familiar characters and race through a joke book and a silly science experiment book called 101 Ways to Have Fun With Paper Cups, before a kindly “Cosmic Librarian” sets them on the right path at last.

Chaos in the Cosmic Library is a fast-paced, fun romp through children’s literature classics and contemporary favorites.  Well-read kids will be highly entertained by the many, many nods to popular authors and books; nothing and no one is safe from Tom Angleberger’s parodizing - from Dr. Seuss and Margaret Wise Brown to Kwame Alexander and Grace Lin, with Pilkey, Kinney, even Twilight in the mix!  He even includes some self-deprecating humor with references to negative reviews and book banning, and an ill-conceived attempt to infiltrate a version of  his most famous book The Strange Case of Origami Yoda.  Interactions between the Two-Headed Chicken and the Reader are really funny, and readers will enjoy the potty humor, terrible wordplay, and pop culture references.  Bold, busy mixed media illustrations are fairly easy to follow in the comic book format, and color-coded speech bubbles are extremely helpful (especially in the scenes in the dark each time the Reader closes a book!) The storyline of the villainous Moose seems to come full circle at the end, but it is not clear whether this is the last book in the series or not. Mazes, quizzes, and other types of puzzles in between chapters add to the fun (or the chaos.) Link to complete review: https://ysbookreviews.wordpress.com/2...

CHAOS IN THE COSMIC LIBRARY is a humorous sci-fi graphic novel in the TWO-HEADED CHICKEN series. Two-headed chicken has used the AstroCap and TimeCap to travel through multiverses and time, respectively, but now, they are using them at the same time. This is a dangerous and ridiculous idea that results in much hilarity, especially when it goes into the Cosmic Library with every book ever written.

What I loved: This is an engaging and humorous graphic novel that is sure to delight middle grade readers. The story takes a lot of silly turns, while using imaginative ideas around the multiverse and time. The sci-fi elements added to the overall story, which felt like an imagination experiment at times. Young readers will enjoy considering the possibilities and thinking of what they'd like their own journeys to look like.

The images matched the mood with plenty of hilarity and creativity throughout. There was a great use of color and plenty of guiding dialogue to keep the reader easily following along. The story really pulls the reader in, and there are things for them to do along the way, becoming part of what they are reading. This works really well for young readers who enjoy being a part of the comedy.

Final verdict: CHAOS IN THE COSMIC LIBRARY is a delightful and humorous graphic novel that is sure to enchant middle graders who enjoy sci-fi and comedy. Recommend for fans of the series and anyone looking for an engaging new read!

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Chaos in the Cosmic Library appears to conclude (at least for now?) the Two-Headed Chicken saga. Still very jokey/chaotic, and light on plot. I'm not a fan of the repeated "jokes" throughout the series about a two-headed chicken being a creepy/gross concept--how about going forward we don't mock individuals for medical conditions or aspects of their appearance? I don't think I'd recommend this series in general.

This time, the two headed chicken takes a philosophical bent to explain how he gets sucked into the Cosmic Library, where there are many spins on kidlit favorites, from bizarre takes on Charlotte's Web and Goodnight Moon to a reimagining of Wimpy Kid called Hungry Moose.

This does appear to be the last book in the series. It is similar to the other two books in that it is a frenzied, nonsensical journey, although Cosmic Chaos has less of a discernable plot. It is a bit funnier as long as the reader appreciates all of the references.

I have a few sixth grade students who enjoy these, but they are not my personal cup of chicken broth.
