The Marigold Trail

Rate this book
13 Going on 30 meets Miss Congeniality in this time travel mystery romcom about an FBI agent trying to navigate her way through betrayal, love, and time.

Atta Suarez’s life consists of crossword puzzles and sampling appetizers while obliterating her friend group every couple of weeks in a battle of board game wits. That’s on top of being knee-deep in criminal cases at the Denver Bureau trying her best to keep up with Agent Ben Brown, her best friend’s brother.

Ben’s been around since elementary school, but for the last five years they’ve been working the same hours, living in the same apartment complex, and sharing the same FBI agent lifestyle. Their close connection is undeniable. Atta only wishes they could take it one step further. Because with Ben, it’s always been a romantic connection that she’s craved.

But when Atta finds herself under perplexing circumstances and becomes threatened by her own FBI department after stumbling upon a gruesome crime, Atta is separated from Ben by time. She finds herself in 1987 where helpful clues litter the mountains and streets of Colorado.

Navigating 1987 brings answers for the future and—by some miraculous twist of fate—an unexpected chance at love. With an opportunity to pursue her ‘perfect match’ and potentially take down the FBI threat from the past, Atta might be able to get everything she wants. But time is in her way and every decision has its consequences. And then there’s also the question of whether or not the rules of this alternate 1987 universe will even allow it.

Time travel romance like I’ve never seen it before!

The Marigold Trail is the first in a series and follows FBI agent Atta, who solves cases alongside Ben, her best friend’s brother, for whom she also has feelings, even though he doesn’t seem to reciprocate. Things take an unexpected turn when their latest investigation thrusts Atta back in time to 1987 in a warped version of her world where she’s back in high school. Here she will discover clues that could help her solve the case back in the present, but in this new reality there is also Ben, and this Ben is catching feelings for her.

What I enjoyed the most about this book is the time travel aspect itself, which was different from any other time travel story I’ve read and watched. It’s at times more complex, but also fun! Why am I saying this? Because Atta doesn’t merely go back in time, but she has an actual role in that time, as do other characters from her timeline, like Ben and his sister, who originally weren’t there in 1987. They don’t merely appear out of nowhere and nobody knows who they are, which is what usually happens in most time travel stories I know. I’ll admit, I was a little confused at first, but I soon stopped wanting to treat time travel like an actual science and trusted the author’s vision. Also, me being me, I was especially fond of the romantic storyline we had in 1987. Friends to lovers is my favorite, and Ben and Atta’s relationship in the 1987 storyline had me very invested.

Here are some tropes!
🎬 A ‘13 Going on 30’ dynamic, but in reverse!
💖 Brother’s best friend romance
🕰️ Time travel with surprises
🔍 Mystery
🕴️ FBI agent FMC

Thank you to the author for gifting me and ebook. Opinions are my own.

This book was a ride!

The Marigold Trail is the first in a time travel romance series and it follows Atta. She is an FBI agent solving cases alongside her best friend's brother, Ben. She's in love with him but (seemingly) he's never seen seen her as more than a friend. Their latest investigation takes an unexpected turn when Atta is thrust back in time to 1987, finding herself in a warped version of her world where she's back in high school, and amidst new clues that could help her solve the case back home, there's also another surprise: the Ben in this world is falling in love with her!

This story is filled with unexpected twists from the get-go that set up the time travel aspect really nicely. The time traveling itself was a very unique aspect of this book because it wasn't merely Atta going back in time, but the relationships and dynamics she knew in her world also changed. For example, her friend and Ben are also present in the 80's (though they don't remember Atta's world) and all the parental figures of the present timeline are part of Atta's generation in the 80's world. This reshaping was really interesting, but it did take me a while to get used to it.

My favorite aspect, however, was the reset of Ben and Atta's relationship. I do love their dynamic in the present (and hope Ben has a change of heart), but I was obsessed with them in the 80's! The brother's best friend trope is done so well, and I love the antagonism they had in the past timeline.

Things you can expect:
- A 13 Going on 30 dynamic, but in reverse!
- Brother's best friend romance
- Time travel with surprises
- Mystery
-FBI agent FMC

Thank you Stephanie Tanner and her team for sending me this ARC for my review!

This book has a very unique plot and I haven’t read anything that is like it. It can fall under a lot of different genres but the main one I would put it in is just general fiction with a plot of a mystery to be solved, especially because the plot does end on a cliffhanger and an open ending leading to another book. Not a ton of romance happened throughout the book and I would definitely label it as a more subplot in the book.

The main character Atta is an FBI agent that somehow ends up time traveling to the 80s and has to figure out a way to get back to the present time and try and solve this huge case she that she is working on.

I did like the setting of the book in the 80s, as it was fun to read about all the different little details from around that time, and to see how differently people would act compared to present day. The beginning of the book in the present time was also fun to read about and the kind of lifestyle a FBI agent might have.

I did enjoy this book and the ending especially. I want to know what the resolution is the plot that this book left off on. My main complaint about this book was that most of the middle felt more atmospheric rather than focusing on the main plot point. It took a detour of a subplot point that didn’t really seem to add much to the main plot, and most of the book focused on that so not much progress was main in the main mystery of the book. I wasn’t super attached to any of the characters but their overall dynamic together was fun to read about.

Overall this book was fun to read about and I hope to get a chance to continue this story!

If you enjoy quirky heroines, time-traveling adventures, and a dash of romance, The Marigold Trail is an absolute must-read! I’m excited to see where this story goes next!

Atta Suarez is an FBI agent with a knack for crossword puzzles and board games, balancing the highs and lows of criminal cases with her undeniable attraction to her best friend’s brother, Agent Ben Brown. The chemistry between them is palpable, and Atta's longing for more makes for a fun, tension-filled dynamic.

But things take a wild turn when Atta stumbles upon a gruesome crime and finds herself unexpectedly transported back to 1987. There, in a strange and unfamiliar world, she uncovers clues that could change the course of her future—and potentially her romantic life. As she works to solve the mystery while navigating a twisty love triangle, the stakes of time travel become even higher.

Key elements that made this book a standout:

Time Travel Romance
Unlikely Heroine
Friend to Lovers
Mystery and Suspense
80s Vibes

I had so much fun reading this book! The mix of romance, time travel, and mystery was a perfect combination that kept me hooked. I loved the slow-burn romance and the witty, engaging narrative.
Huge thanks to the author for providing a copy, all opinions are my own.

I loved how descriptive the author was, I could fully envision myself in the situation of the main character. I also enjoyed the mystery of it. It wasn’t super predictable so between my reading times I would find myself thinking about the story and trying to figure out how the story was going to go. I’m looking forward to the next book!

This was a cute book with an interesting concept.
I enjoyed that it was fresh spin on the time travel concept.
There were some grammatical errors, and the book was a little overly descriptive (too many metaphors, similes, etc). I appreciate having a book be descriptive but sometimes if there are too many it can feel bogged down and slow to read.
I loved that Atta went back to 1987, which was the year I was born. It was fun being immersed in all of the 80’s references, especially the music.
I enjoyed the characters and their chemistry, especially Atta and her best friend, Diana. I do feel like the relationships could have been developed more, especially with Ben. It was also fun seeing her relationships with her mom and grandparents in the 80’s.
The book does end with a cliffhanger to open up the way for another book to see how the adventures continue with Atta, Ben, and the Marigold Trail!
Loved the cover :)

Stefani Tanner's debut novel is a time-traveling mystery, where you follow Atta into the 80s to find clues about a group called Marigold.
The book is peppered with fun, nostalgic 80s references to the culture of the decade.

Tanner does not follow the typical who-dun-it format, but instead takes the reader on a slow-burn journey finding clues here and there while Atta tries to decide if she wants 80s Ben or present day Ben. Some of the reviews have stated they don't feel this book is a romance, and I disagree, Atta is clearly in love with Ben, but despite the decade, Ben is not really that into Atta.

How will this one-sided romance work out? Will Atta find all the clues she needs to figure out Marigold? Tanner leaves you on a cliffhanger, which left me feeling frustrated and intrigued to see how Tanner will tie together all of the loose ends in her sequel.

While the books pacing is slow, the chapters are short, making this book something you can easily take a nibble out of every time you pick it up.

Title: The Marigold Trail

Blurb: Thank you to Stephanie Tanner for the opportunity to read this ARC. What a fun concept for a book. I love mystery books, but they usually have a very basic formula, and this one definitely had a unique and original concept.

What I liked: The unique concept of a time travel book mixed with a mystery. All the 80s references were super fun.
What I didn’t like: I wasn’t as attached to the characters as I usually am and found myself getting a bit bored with their stories. I wish the mystery aspect was more resolved.

If you love:

🔸 Friends to lovers
🔸 Mystery
🔸 FBI MC
🔸 Time travel

Genre: Time travel romantic mystery
Rating: 3.5 ⭐️
Spice: 🌶️
Series/standalone: Book 1 (and the only current release) in this incomplete series
Themes/Tropes: friends to lovers, FBI agent, time travel, mystery
Triggers: nothing stood out to me as something that would harm anyone’s mental health in this book, but it does deal with FBI agents and a murder mystery

This book was SO REFRESHING and just the change of pace I needed to help me out of my "book slump." I'm a sucker for the 1980's, and Tanner painted the past beautifully in my mind! I typically stick to fantasy reads, but this is going on my top five reads of the year. Seriously. The main character (Atta) is relatable; I know for a fact that other readers will love her quirky and intelligent personality. Also, let's talk about that for a second: Tanner did SUCH a fantastic job with character building! As an author, I was kicking my feet and grinning at the level of detail she went into regarding world-building and tying the character's plot to current events. (Past AND present)

I don't want to spoil anything, but I must tell you that the romance between Atta and the MMC is *chef's kiss*... that's all I'm going to say to intrigue you. (I'm giggling)

Pick up this book if you like to read mysteries and want Back To The Future vibes with romance!

I absolutely loved this book!! Atta was a great character with so much determination to find out the truth. Ben was also a great character in this as well. You can just see how close him and Atta are and just wonder why they never got together.
Atta and Ben are FBI agents and when a file comes in, they get in over their heads. When threaten, Atta time travels to the 80s to see if she can uncover anything. I will say I enjoyed this immensely because the author did a fantastic job of bringing all the music, clothes and lingo down to a T. Her and Ben also got to do some rekindling as well. This book was a lot of fun to read and it just draws you in and you have to know what is going to happen next!
I can't wait to read more from this author!

This book was like stepping into a nostalgic time capsule!

FBI agent Atta is used to solving puzzles, but nothing prepares her for waking up in 1987 after stumbling onto a dangerous case. Separated from her longtime crush and partner Ben, she has to navigate the past and solve a growing mystery.

I always love time travel! Traveling back to 1987 was such a fun ride, especially seeing how the characters showed up in new ways in the past.

The mystery had me hooked trying to piece everything together. I also really appreciated how vivid the scenes felt.

I’m so excited to see what comes next!

If you’re into time travel, some romantic tension, and a good mystery, you need to pick this up!

Thank you Stefani Tanner for the gifted ARC

This book is a time-travel romantic comedy with mystery thrown in. The author did a great job of keeping my interest. I loved all of the references from the 80s. Between the Marigold case and Ben’s secrets, I needed to keep reading, because my theories of the outcome kept changing.

Unfortunately, Atta, Ben and their friends reminded me a lot of the high school kids I didn’t want to hang out with, so this personality clash caused me to enjoy the book less than I would have if they had been more likable.

Also, the ending of the book definitely primed for another book, and I would have preferred more resolution.

If you like Back to The Future meets Miss Congeniality meets 13 Going on 30, this is like a mesh of all that with its unique plot and characters. If you like 80's references and being put into the 80's mood, this is a book for you. There were really cool tropes/ideas. Suspense, humor, and romance are weaved masterfully in the book. How she connected everything at the end was the cherry on top, and there will be a sequel.

Ben is a real MMC with chocolate brown eyes, converse, motorcycle, and dimple that Atta always looks for when he smiles. Atta and Ben have so many cute dates/moments, and their tension was unmatched. Everyone will love Atta and Ben.

A great time traveling adventure with mystery and romance. Atta Suarez is an FBI agent who loves solving puzzles and playing board games. She is also in love with her BF’s brother, fellow FBI agent Ben Brown. When she is transported back to the 1980s, she gets a chance to solve the mystery and maybe get her man.

I loved everything about this read. The characters, the time travel, the mystery, the slow burn romance. Atta is a quirky and relatable character. This one gives 13 going on 30 and back to the future vibes. I think you’ll love it as much as I did. It does end on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait for the next book.

It took me a bit to get into the book but it pulls you in as you keep reading it. Like another reviewer said - I wouldn’t consider it a romance - it’s more of a time traveler mystery. I’m not a huge fan of books that end on cliff hanger with nothing truly wrapped up - so that’s the main reason for the 4 star review. But it was well written and the author does a great job with her descriptions. I look forward to the second book in the series!

This novel captivated me from the very first page and held my attention throughout. The author crafted a mesmerizing world that I couldn't help but get lost in. The dual-reality concept was intriguing, and I loved experiencing the main characters' journeys through high school. The music references added a delightful touch. I found myself rooting for their romance to blossom. It's a well-crafted narrative that brilliantly blends fun and mystery. I'm eagerly anticipating the release of book two!

I really enjoyed this book, I even finished it while I was in labor! Although I didn’t live during the 80’s it was fun to travel back with Atta and imagine what it may have been like being in high school with my mom. The author is very descriptive and really brought Atta’s story to life. I enjoyed so many of the characters and their little quirks and personalities. I am excited to read the second one!

This was a pretty good mystery and loved going back to the decade I grew up in! It did take me a bit longer than I'd like to get into it though. It's not as much a romance as others have said, which wouldn't bother me except the blurb and Tropes in marketing really play that aspect up.

Also the somewhat villainous turn of and impetus to putting our protagonists in danger felt forced. I just didn't buy that this guy would make his intentions so obvious.

I loved the 80's vibes of this read. The author does an amazing job of weaving the ongoing plot line with mysteries sprinkled throughout the story, the case that Atta is working that feels like a quest, and nostalgia in the form of cassette tapes, perms, and teenage angst. You know it's a good mystery when whenever you get an answer to a question you actually end up with more questions with an epic finish! The ride there was so fun and had the perfect vibes!

This story went above and beyond my thoughts of a time travel romance. It was different but also fun. It gave me a rush of curiosity to want to know more. Descriptive writing is a hook for me, i love that i can feel like an outsider looking in. The romance was lovely. You wanted them to be together, and they were different in the 80s, i can say i enjoyed them more there. The romance was romancing.

If you love the 80s and 80s music, then you will be in 7th heaven.
Stefani has managed to convincingly convey the confusion felt by her main character on finding herself in an alternative world.
This is definitely more a mystery / intrigue than romance and is the first in the series. It ends in a cliff hanger, which is why I would not classify it as a romance.

Such a fun read!
Mystery, romance, time travel and more! Join the adventures of Atta as she is working on a case as an FBI agent and then suddenly gets thrown back in time! Will she be able to find clues to the case as she navigates being back in high school?
Definitely one that held my interest as the suspense was building on so many aspects of the story — and I highly recommend it!!

What an absolutely fun and intriguing story. The influence of the concepts of 13 going on 30 are weaved throughout this story. We start in modern times with our FBI agent FMC, Atta and her unrequited love of her best friend's brother, Ben (also an FBI agent), but through a series of unknown events Atta is sent back to the past. . . the late 80s! I loved all the 80s references! I also loved the mystery aspect of this book and trying to figure out what is going on, who can we trust, and how will Atta's actions in 1987 impact the future. I was not expecting this to end on a cliffhanger; I am anxiously awaiting to find out what happens next!

Highlights:
✨Non-Linear Timeline
✨Reverse 13 going on 30
✨Friends to Lover
✨Best Friend's Brother
✨Romystery (Romance x Mystery)

Thank you to the author and RR book tours for the reader copy. My opinions are my own.
