The book of Obadiah may be among the most neglected in the Old Testament. It is a message of divine judgment against Israel’s cousins, the Edomites. Descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother, the Edomites taunted Israel and celebrated her destruction at the hands of the Babylonians in 586 BC. In response to such arrogance and hatred, a little-known Judaean prophet named Obadiah predicted Esau’s doom and Israel’s restoration. Obadiah reminds us of God’s faithfulness to the humble and lowly, and of his oath to punish and humiliate the wicked.
Michael Whitworth is the author of over forty books and commentaries exploring the depth and wonder of Scripture. A graduate of Freed-Hardeman University, he preaches for the Newport Avenue Church of Christ in Bend, Oregon. When he isn’t writing, he finds joy in simple things—reading a good book, capturing landscapes through his camera lens, or guzzling coffee (with a jar of M&Ms close by).
This is a great little (I finished it in about an hour or so) exposition on the book of Obadiah. Even though the biblical book is only 21 verses long, it has always been a difficult book for me to wrap my head around. Whitworth's book finally helped me understand what it's all about. This book also reinforced what the Lord has been teaching me lately about my feelings toward those who are antagonistic toward the Christian faith. God has been helping me to see that those folks are acting like heathens because they ARE heathens. I shouldn't be surprised when they lash out at Christians because they are enemies of God. And I was exactly like them before God saved me. I need to be praying for these present day Edomites rather than being angry toward them.
Great treatment of the small and neglected book of Obadiah. Would make a great class for a few weeks...maybe a month. Superb for preachers and teachers. Suggest for church libraries. There is not much info on Obadiah and this should be a keeper!
