Taken at Dusk

2⭐️

I don’t know what to think of this series, I honestly don’t...

This instalment of the Shadow Falls series was not as enjoyable as the first two. To start with, Kylie. My thoughts on Kylie keep changing by book. The first book in the series I found her fairly annoying, the second book I liked her considerably more, book three I was right back to annoyance. I felt that a large part of this book was Kylie whining about Lucas and Derek and complaining about Lucas and Derek’s ex girlfriends (Fredericka was more justifiable). And a chameleon, really? It took three books, three books! We finally got to the point of discovering what Kylie is and I’m just, really?!?!

Now, Lucas and Derek. I’m losing all patience with these two. I started this series kind of preferring Derek, then Lucas and now I just want them both to leave. Firstly, Lucas is getting on my last nerve. He is so possessive and how he is acting towards Kylie and what she is supernaturally. As if she has control over everything and if she’s not a werewolf it’s her fault. And Derek, with his stupid idiocy. He couldn’t handle that Kylie was struggling with her feelings. Fair enough. However to then do the things he proceeded to do, he made his bed he should lie in it...

I’m kind of confused why there was so much focus at the beginning with Kylie’s ‘grandparents’. The first part of the book it was very present, however after that it was just kind of pushed aside until the end of the book. Then we find out that her ‘grandfather’ was actually her grandfather! What?!

I just found myself getting so bored and uninterested in this book. It felt like the story wasn’t really getting anywhere, to be honest I wasn’t really sure where it was supposed to be going...

Whispers at Moonrise

3.5⭐️

I still struggling with my feelings towards this series.

I’m not going to go into to much detail in this review, this is book 4 so if you want my thoughts on the characters check out my other reviews, because they haven’t really changed.

Ok, first things first, the damn love triangle! I just want it to be over! I have gone back and forth between Lucas and Derek so many times during these books and I’m just done. At the beginning of this series, I favoured Lucas, now he’s an overprotective ass who is getting on my last nerve. I’m really starting to prefer Derek, at least he is giving Kylie the space to sort out her feelings.

This series is getting very repetitive. Every book has practically the same storyline. Kylie doesn’t understand what she is, Kylie haunted by some ghost, Kylie struggling to choose between Lucas and Derek, etc. You get the picture. But this series is entertaining. It is not by any means a literary piece of art, but it’s easy and fun to read. Still, it would be nice to just have a little variation in the storylines.

One of my favourite things throughout this series has been the friendship between Kylie, Della and Miranda. I wasn’t too happy with this friendship in this book. Firstly, I felt that we had a lot more of Kylie and Della, but not as much Miranda. I do really love Della but I wanted all three of them. My main issue with these girls was how unsupportive Della and Miranda were when Kylie was struggling with her changing pattern. It was more focused on this when Kylie’s pattern showed her as a witch. Kylie was upset and Miranda took it as an insult, that Kylie didn’t want to be a witch. If I were Miranda, I wouldn’t have token it that way, I would have understood that witch is, like the 3rd supernatural pattern Kylie has shown, of course she is frustrated and upset! She has no idea what is going on!

I did really enjoy the addition of the new chameleons. We don’t really learn to much about them but I’m hoping that it is explored more in the final book. Also, Holiday and Burnett. Holiday and Burnett! Finally!

Overall, I did prefer this book to book 3 but I did have some issues with it.

Well, Its official guys. The happiness in my soul has finally cascaded down a steep cliff and drowned in the Pacific Ocean. *Sigh* Woe is me! How can one little series affect me in such a way?! After reading the first two books, Born at Midnight and Awake at Dawn, all I thought was how intriguing and wonderful these books were as they took me on a fun little ride down Fantasy Highway. Then I started reading the second “2 Books in 1” installment and WHAM, suddenly my pumpkin carriage is now a roller coaster ride to hell and I’m finding myself on the corner of Depression Lane and ThisS**tBetterTurnOutHowIWant Boulevard. I mean honestly, I’m a little pissed the ____ off right now…but as always, I can appreciate this pissed off feeling.

Why do these authors do this to me?

As Kyle adjusts to her new life of being a supernatural, she realizes that going back to her old life would be out of the question. Though she is finding acceptance with being at Shadow Falls and with her newfound friendships, her quest to find answers to who (or what) she really is has just begun. Not only is Kylie struggling with coming across countless dead ends to her questions, she is also stuck with trying to figure out if she is supposed to be with Derek, the Fae that is considerate and sweet, or Lucas, the mysterious Were from her past. But as Kylie finally makes her decision, countless obstacles get in the way of them being together. Soon more strange and miraculous powers start to emerge from Kyle, which only brings more confusion to the Camp leader Holiday, and Burnett, the FRU agent. On top of everything else, Kylie’s ghost situation only becomes more difficult with each visitor. After one ghost tells her of a haunting message someone lives and someone dies, Kylie fears that she might soon lose one of her new friends or family members. But with these ghosts haunting Kylie and dragging her into terrifying visions of their deaths and pasts, Shadow Falls camp is also on high alert as they try to protect Kylie from an intruder who is set on kidnapping Kylie for her unique abilities.

That was probably one of the hardest descriptions I have had to write, for the fact that there is no way to go around spilling secrets from this series. So saying that, please be aware:

THIS REVIEW IS GOING TO BE FULL OF SPOILERS!

So much has happened in these two books, Taken at Dusk and Whispers at Moonrise, that it’s hard to even know where to begin! Firstly, I guess we can start with how much this author has SERIOUSLY pulled me into the life of Kylie Galen. I feel that I have a deep connection with this character and truly care about her well-being and future. It isn’t very often that I still like a main character by the third and fourth books, because frankly, they start to get whiny and annoying. Kylie on the other hand, takes realistic and horrific supernatural visions and family/friend drama like a CHAMPION. I enjoy that I get to have descriptions of the emotional turmoil she is constantly going through, but I feel like it doesn’t go past the point of unrealistic and start to become a story about a girl who is absorbed in drama and teenage angst. The author does a great job of engulfing the reader in the visual experiences that Kylie has with ghosts, which are more or less visions of how the ghosts’ lived or died. If it was me having those experiences, best believe I would not be as calm after those visions as this character; but that is probably why I like her so much.

These two books, once again, are packed with adventure and new twists and turns. I really like how this author writes because she has a knack for giving the reader tiny bits of necessary information, but writing it into the story in such a nonchalant way that the reader has a hard time figuring out what is going to happen. I personally LOVE when an author has the ability to make me so confused with the clues that they lay out for me, that I start reading even faster so I know where the hell the story is going to end up.

There were so many heartbreaking moments in these two books, and it has really put quite the damper on my heart. I was hoping the whole someone lives and someone dies thing was going to be a metaphor or something, but sadly it wasn’t. It is interesting that many of the ghosts that appear to Kylie are ghosts that are either connected to her or someone she is close with. Especially since there is a cemetery full of ghosts that beg Kylie for help, I find it interesting that only the ones close to her circle of people are who she comes in contact with. I think it is a unique quality to add to the book, but I am definitely hoping that she comes into contact with some ghosts that have nothing to do with her or her friends.

Okay, I seriously have to touch on the Lucas and Derek thing now. I know, I know. It is another most annoying love triangle, but alas, I must touch on it because I…am losing my s**t over here guys. Losing. My. S**t. You may remember from my last review of Shadow Falls: The Beginning (if you read it) that I mentioned how in every series with a love triangle there is always one guy that is a complete badass while the other is kind of boring. I also had said, that this might be the first love triangle I have read about where the male characters were actually kind of even. On that note, I would like to slightly change my opinion. Derek, as much as I hate to say it, has been named the male character that is just getting on my nerves. Why? I’ll tell you. I cannot stand a male character that acts more emotional than the female character does, especially when our main female character is going through WAY more insane things. I had really liked Derek in the beginning, but his constant questions to Kylie of “Are you Okay?” just because he is a Fae and can feel her emotions very strongly, really drives me crazy. Enough is enough, I am so tired of hearing him want to talk to her about her emotions and THANKFULLY she gets to the point where she is too. I knew I liked this girl.

On the topic of Lucas, MY OH MY. I could just slap that werewolf in the face. I mean I obviously adore his character because of how mysterious and protective he is, but it is so disappointing to see yet another male figure in Kylie’s life turn out to be a complete idiot. I am still sitting here hoping that the author will mend this relationship between them, because I will be so heartbroken if it doesn’t get fixed. As soon as I had finished this book I literally gasped, opened the next book, and started speed reading so I could find out what will happen.

I am halfway through the last book, and I am still clinging to hope over here.

In conclusion to this way too long review, I read through this installment VERY quickly because of how addicting the series is. Now, as I am currently halfway through reading the last book, I am completely wishing I had slowed down. Obviously because of my emotional investment in the lives of these fictional characters, that would be literally impossible for me to do. I cannot stress enough how much I am enjoying the Shadow Falls series, and I am REALLY recommending that you guys go and give it a chance. It is a great series to get lost in and a great series to obsess over. Which is exactly what I have been doing as of late, obsessing.

SO. ADDICTING. I want to stay up all night and read the last book now!! Loved all of it except how much she worries about which guy to pick. Skimmed some of that. But I guess that’s what’s on the mind as a 16-year-old.

This feels very similar to the first books, but slightly improved.

It still felt trashy (again not bad, just like reality TV), but the annoying events became homely and exciting?? IDK but I liked this more but like all the stuff with Perry and Miranda and events feel friendly, like a big friend group just having a good time. It's still very enthralling and engaging, it's easy to read and is fast. It also feels cool, like just interesting for 2012 (not an insult) but in that 2012 supernatural way if you know.

The romance just keeps getting more CONFUSING and CONFUSING, like why so complicated, I get it but OMG. I still think Lucas is an ass and yes Derek is kind of an ass, he's less of an ass. PLUS, he's exciting, less possessive, a fae, and just more romantic. But Lucas is possessive and immature, I know Derek makes mistakes, I mean he slept with Ellie, but I mean they weren't together and it didn't mean anything. I still like him more.

Speaking of Ellie, THE SIDE CHARACTERS!!! Holiday, Miranda, Della, Ellie, Burnett, I could die for them. And when Holiday almost (or ig did) die, my heart stopped. I actually cared about them a lot, more than Kylie tbh, she's kinda a bitch ngl.

Lastly, in contrast to most people, I actually liked the explanation of chameleons and that being what she is, I think that it's really cool. Having both traits of the parents passed down instead of one being dominant is really cool, and the chameleon's powers are super cool too. I thought it was interesting, idk about the name chameleon but whatever. As for Kylie's powers, the ghost stuff is really amazing and always an interesting subplot. I love how it always relates and ties into it, and also how the ghosts protect her. The ghosts of her father, Sarah's grandmother, her grandmother, Holiday's twin sister, and Ellie (actually kinda sad when she died) always propelled the story and it was interesting after you found out.

Yeah, it was definitely better and exciting but it's not my favorite, there was still a lot of issues or things I didn't enjoy as much, I'm excited to know how it ends.

TAKEN AT DUSK

Not a whole lot happens in the third book. Super slow at times. It starts to pick up at the end when she figures out who the ghost is-which is a good twist! She finally figures out what she is, but no one knows anything about a Camilian.

WISPERS AT MOONRISE
Story starts out slow again. It's kinda annoying how Kylie can't make up her mind whether she wants to be with Lucas or not. I vote for Derek myself! The story starts to get really interesting when Kylie discovers she's not just a healer. She can switch back and forth between being any of the supernaturals. She feels like an outcast because she doesn't "fit in" with any one particular supernatural group. Kylie is torn between staying at Shadow Falls and leaving to go live with her grandfather and great aunt who can give her all the answers she has been seeking about who she is. At the end she leaves...can't wait to see what happens in the final book!

Holy hell this book was AMAZING. Seeing Kylie finally get some answers and begin to blossom into her true self was amazing in itself. But the way the author really makes you connect to her in this book is just *chefs kiss*. When Kylie was embarrassed, I felt my cheeks heat up (& she was embarrassed a lot this book haha), when she was excited with love, my hard was pounding with joy, and when her heart was shattered, I left tear stains on the pages (forewarning I tear stained the end of the book haha).

I enjoyed C.C. Hunter’s "Shadow Falls: The Next Chapter". It continued the tale of Kylie Galen and her supernatural misfit friends.

Kylie is no longer a wishy-washy teen. But, she is still trying to figure out which supernatural group she belongs to while navigating a love triangle. The more I read about this character, the more I like her. Although she’s supernatural, she has normal people problems. She’s worried about fitting in, how to choose between guys she likes, managing bickering roommates and dealing with her separated parents.

After reading "Taken at Dusk", I wasn’t a fan of Derek. He was guilty of saying one thing and doing another. My opinion changed after reading "Whispers at Moonrise". His behavior made sense. I even understood how his emotions overwhelmed him. After all, normal people can get lost in their emotions and be unable to function.

Where "Shadow Falls: The Beginning" was about friendship, "Shadow Falls: The Next Chapter" was about relationships in general. I appreciated how Hunter deepened the relationship between Kylie and her mother. The “Ice Queen” really loved her daughter and made a real effort to show that. I enjoyed the blossoming relationship between Burnett and Holiday. It was humorous and heart warming. I even liked the strange relationship Kylie was having with her ‘ghost’ Dad and her stepdad. Kylie’s love for one man didn’t diminish her love for the other.

Kylie’s quest to discovery her true nature intensified the plot in "Shadow Falls: The Next Chapter". She learns that the FRU, a supernatural government agency, has secrets and major skeletons in its closet and they may involve her. By the end of Taken at Dusk, Kylie has a better clue of her true nature but it is puzzling. She needs answers and that’s where "Shadow Falls: The Next Chapter" installment ends.

Hunter did a fantastic job interweaving humor, classic teen issues and a paranormal plot. I had serious laugh out loud moments reading "Shadow Falls: The Next Chapter". The characters are well-developed and continue to mature in the series.

I’m looking forward to reading the last installment in this series.

This book contains Taken at Dusk (Book #3) and Whispers at Moonrise (Book #4) from the Shadow Falls Series. I remembered really enjoying this series when I first read it several years ago and decided to reread it. Kylie continues her quest to discover who and what she is during these books and also reunites with her biological fathers remaining family. These books do a good job of picking up were books 1 & 2 left off and also introduce a few new characters. This is a really good series with an entertaining plot and fun characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book of this series and seeing how the plot unfolds.

Okay, so this is more like 4.5 stars...
I loved this book so much! I am so glad that we FINALLY got an answer to what Kylie is, thank the lord, but of course, that only leaves her with more questions. I just fell in love with the characters even more in this book, Della and MIranda are the absolute greatest, and Holiday and Burnett are so cute! I do sort of have an unpopular opinion though, I kind of find myself wishing that Kylie would have chosen Derek. At first i was total team Lucas but as they started getting further in their relationship I realized that I didn't like him as much as I thought I did. Hopefully he'll grow on me though, because he certainly does have admirable qualities!
Overall, I super duper enjoyed this book! I can't wait to read the next one!!!!

I think that this book was a very good continuation of the series. The characters stayed true, which does not always happen in series. Kylie, the main character, had very believable emotions, and the plot was enticing. Personally, I did not enjoy the romance aspects, because I felt that the author was just trying to draw out the suspense of her choice. As soon as she picked one boy, the other would do something that made her fall in love with him instead. But, it is an excellent book for light reading, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Okay, these books don't really have much a plot...
We finally get to find out what kind of supernatural Kylie is, but of course, it still provides more questions than answers.
For me, the character development and the interaction is what keeps me reading this series and I can't wait to see what happens next.
