World War III is past by three decades. The fight to relearn the old ways is a continuing problem. Roving gangs and slavers are still a never ending plague on the land. Duke and Lottie Stanley have done their best to be off the main paths to keep hidden. But it hasn’t worked and they have had to run. Now they find themselves burned out and having to start over. They head back to their old home only to find themselves not wanted by his older brother and trouble is afoot with unknown criminals in their midst. That's if they can survive getting to the fort. Duke and Lottie must find who told of their whereabouts and find a way to stop the killing and robbery of their family and friends.

Their small community, hidden in the hills, is suddenly attacked at night and they must run for their lives. Duke and Lottie head back to their previous community, where his brother lead. Only, something seems wrong with his brother and t he criminals responsible for the attack are closer than they thought.
A quick read about an enterprising family with some problems. Not only problems of living off the land, but who to trust against those who would enslave others for their own benefit. Duke and Lottie are very caring people without children of their own but a great sens of responsibility to help others.
