As the Warmaster’s forces close in on the Sol System and Terra itself, a group of rogue psykers attempt to flee from a more imminent danger – the Sisters of Silence.
READ IT BECAUSE
The Soulless Queen, Jenetia Krole, makes a surprise appearance in this Horus Heresy short story as a desperate group of rogue psykers attempt to flee the Sol System before the Traitor forces arrive.
THE STORY
On the edges of the Sol System, a ragged group of rogue psykers desperately try to escape the clutches of the Sisters of Silence before the Traitors arrive in the system. Aboard a decrepit mining facility on an asteroid, they are hunted by an unknown monstrosity as they await their salvation. Little do they know, the monstrosity is none other than Jenetia Krole, determined to round them up and take them to the Imperial Palace in preparation for the Unspoken Sanction.
Sadly, nothing new here, the sisters of silence are one of my favourite factions of warhammer period, and unfortunately, this short only covers everything we have already seen before. We've even had stories with the point of view of the hunted by the sisters, so I'm not sure what the aim of this short was.
On a positive note, Jude Reid clearly gets the sisters of silence, I just hope she gets to explore more of the mysteries of this powerful order in future stories.
I think the "Hunter hunting the hunted" trope is a bit bland now but I agree with the other reviewer that Jude Reid has a great grasp of how the Sisters of Silence operate and would be keen to see Reid take another crack at them if the chance arises.
So why in the hell would one even bother order (and pay ) for 34 pages . I read that within an hour. Why does the black library keep selling these very short stories instead collecting them and publish anthologies or short story collections. Meh.
The Oblivion Knights or “Silent Sisters” are psychic nulls, a void in the warp that makes them the perfect hunters of psykers. Unfortunately, they don’t have many appearances in the Heresy series, so I appreciate when they do show up.
This story is about psykers fleeing Terra, hoping to find a life somewhere more accepting and peaceful. But the Golden Throne needs Psykers, and the Oblivion Knights are on the hunt. Gripping horror as the psykers deal with the unstoppable monster tracking them down. I would love to see Jude Reid write a story from the point of view of the Silent Sisters in the future.
