From corsets and camis to tailoring and textiles, The Fashion Book is a sassy style guide for teenage girls who want to discover the stories behind their favorite looks, find their own style, and learn what makes the fashion world tick.
Packed with gorgeous images, this illustrated book for young adults takes a unique look at fashion. It reveals how modern-day looks, from catwalk to high-street fashions, draw on the styles of the past from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and from the rebel attire of the 50's to the sport-inspired looks of the 80's.
Through witty graphics and bright lively text, teens can go behind the scenes of the exclusive fashion world. Style icons, designers, and top models all give practical tips to create stunning outfits, explain key fashion terms, discuss careers in fashion, and reveal secrets of the industry. Trivia, a glossary, inspirational quotes, and more make The Fashion Book a must-have accessory for teens.
This is so much fun. I've always been fascinated by fashion. I love how the attitudes and thoughts of the period are expressed through clothing and we never think about how the fashions we wear today or in our younger years are influenced by the fashions worn centuries ago (and thank the Lord as women we don't have to wear those insane under garments anymore!!!)
I love this book and all its little details. Yes, hygiene wasn't that great for many centuries, but who would have thought that when people had fleas and they wore furs that all they would do is just shake the garment out before wearing it again. Ugh! I love history!!!!! How Royalty set the standard for fashion and makeup. Did you know that the fashion for heavy white makeup started with Elizabeth the first because she contracted small pox and it left marks on her face? You'll get tid bits like that and so much more with this book.
I almost want a copy of this for my own collection.
I've been a fan of DK books for a very long time. They make nonfiction books fun and accessible for kids and teens. I love the attention to detail and the many pictures that are part of DK line. As a middle school teacher, I'm always looking for interesting reads for my students. Unfortunately the most difficult genre to get them to read is nonfiction. That is why I was so excited to receive an advanced copy of The Fashion Book.
Starting with the cover, I loved the bold and colorful illustrations. I could tell right away that this was not simply a book just about fashion, but a trip through the history of fashion. The Foreword was written directly to teens, encouraging them to journey through the different ages of fashion and to apply what they've learned to help them come up with their own sense of style.
The book begins with Goddess Glamour which is the period of the Ancient Greeks. The book then travels through many time periods and ends with Urban Clash , style of the nineties. Each time period has a creative and interest grabbing name to pull readers in. Some of my favorites were: Victorian Vibe, Stretch Revolution, and Punk Spirit .
Each time period is then divided into two separate sections entitled Something Borrowed and Window-Shopping The Past. The Something Borrowed section gives the reader tips on how to dress like a girl from that time period. The tips often suggest things that might already be in a modern girl's closet or something equally easily accessible at a store. I was amazed at how easily and with hardly any effort, I could dress like a girl from the past. Along with "how to dress" tips there are also many interesting factoids about the styles of the era. For example we learn about dandies (fancy dressing men) from the 1800s and that it took each of them five hours to get dressed everyday. Wow!
The Window-Shopping The Past section gives specific information on trends of the era. You learn about things like: clothing materials, jewelry, shoes, and accessories. This section is always jazzed up with quotes from the era, and of course, lots and lots of pictures. One of my favorite quotes was from the era of the 1920s-30s. Claire McCardell, fashion designer stated "I like comfort. I do not like glitter." I think this quote shows how much fashion can change from one decade to the next (flappers to the modern girl of the 30s.)
There are also some extra sections that are added in throughout the book. In The Lowdown sections you get insider information into style specifics of the time period. You might learn about "The Right Shoes," or "The Story of Leather," or my favorite, "The Secret Language of Fans." Other sections include information on fashion moguls, famous models, and students working towards degrees in the fashion industry.
All in all, this is a very informative and interesting book! It seems like the publishers have taken every aspect of the history of fashion and crammed it in. The pictures are outstanding and really bring each era to life. I really enjoyed how the book not only looked at women's fashions, but men's as well. I would have really loved to have seen the book in color; I think that would have brought a whole new dimension to the book. I checked out the pictures on Amazon, and they looked amazing. The only reason that I gave the book four out of five stars was because at times I was unclear as to what time period was being presented. I think it would be really helpful if the time period was at the top of each page or that each period was specifically separated.
This is a book that I will definitely recommend to my students!
Filled with lots of information about the fashion of numerous time periods. Starting from Ancient Greece, all the way to modern day trends. I love knowing all sorts of fun facts and this book gives me all sort of random trivia. The quotes scattered all over the book are priceless! Here's my favorite: 'To me fashion is like a mirror, It's a reflection of the times.' --Anna Sui.
The ideas for replicating styles into your own wardrobe are a little simplistic. You'd have to have some imagination on your own to come up with an actual outfit.
I got the advanced reader copy so I'm not sure if the actual edition to be sold will have color since mine doesn't. It would've have been much better if the pictures were printed with color.
So before I get started I want to say that the fact that I received this book as an advanced copy in no way influences my review.
Now that that's all out in the open, I can begin.
This is going to sound crazy and maybe a bit rude but oh well. I surprised myself with this book. I actually really enjoyed it. There's nothing really rude about that, right? Here's why it surprised me: I don't really always like DK Publishing. Nothing against the material they publish it just that no matter what they're writing, and no matter what age group they're trying to pinpoint, it just always seems kind of childish to me. This book, while slightly younger, was not immature like I've experienced with their other books.
I had a lot of interest in the book because well, I love fashion, but I have absolutely no sense of fashion. I love older fashion styles, like Greek influences and even things from the 1900's. I would love to incorporate these styles into my everyday wardrobe, but I've never known how to get that authentic 1970's look without looking like I was trapped in the taping of Grease. This book showed me how I could do it. I loved how after explaining each era, and major influences on the era, it showed how to wear it in the modern century.
Major fashion icons were discussed, and the trends that they started, or followed, really became more prominent to me. You could go from reading about Queen Elizabeth to Audrey Hepburn (whom I adore, it was fun to read about her). The book was showing how history became the present, and I loved it. You could go from reading about fashion during the medieval times to seeing how fashion presentation works now in the 20th Century. I genuinely enjoyed this book.
Kudos to DK Publishing, I loved this book. If you know someone who loves fashion and think they might be interested in fashion, then this is the book for them. I can't wait for the book to come out in September, I have a few friends who I think might love this.
I received a copy from the publisher, bias free review will follow.

Though I do regret that the ARC is only in black and white, it was still highly informative for fashion forward people or even those looking to learn, or maybe just a tad curious about fashion. Maybe they wanted to see pictures? Whichever you may be, this could be a book to pick up once it hits the stores. (*˙︶˙*)☆*°
In a detailed fashion, which serves it’s topic well, this little thing takes us throughout fashion across time. From all the way back when, in the Greek style times until present day and gives advice for whichever your favorites maybe be, and how to create a present day look with it’s feel instead of actually going for the probably not possible to get outfits from back then. I, myself, really like the Greek, Egyptian and Victorian Eras and was glad to find them available with little minor details of information that without research, one wouldn't know. Props to DK publishing. (╭☞´ิ∀´ิ)╭☞
Would love to see this in full color come September actually to be able to see all the styles throughout time in their full glory and if anyone is interested in fashion or just a certain era, this book will have it all. Handy thing it is. ԅ( ˘ω˘ ԅ) They even provide terms for many many things fashion followers would know and those who don’t can learn. You’ll see names you know, and those you don’t but may search up just because. It was very well put together and thanks, once again!♡
This book is extremely helpful for anyone that wants to create their own unique style. I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book through GoodReads First Reads. I have struggled to create my own individual style. This book shows the transition of style trends. Not only are the styles shown, but this book explains how to use the elements from past trends and add them to your wardrobe and still have a style the is timeless. You don't want to look like a copy cat from a past era. This book teaches you how to accessorize the wardrobe you already have. I now feel confident that I will be able to create a whole new style that reflects my personality without replacing my whole closet or worrying about over killing a previous trend and looking like I just walked out of a time machine!
(FTC:I received this book as an ARC from GoodReads/ FirstReads and DK Publishing, and I thank them for their generosity. This in no way effected my opinions, which are 100% mine)
This book is a marvelous introduction to fashion for tweens and teens. In signature DK style of short, entertaining segments of history, use, modern uses, the reader explores the history of fashion from the Greeks to modern.
I wish there had been something similar for teens when I was younger. A book to be shared with tweens and teens, or anyone who needs a reference for fashion trends
This is such a cute book about fashion history. And it goes way back to the ancient Egyptian and Greek. I love the "how to get the look" part of the book. Get the look of audrey hepburn to a rock punk chick. And whatever you are in the mood for. There's also a lot of great pictures of different ensembles possible. Very entertaining and this is the perfect for your fashionista friend.Thank you so much for sending me a copy! cheers!
I love reading this fashion history book. It was so fascinating seeing what people wore in the past, but what was really interesting was learning how to recreate those looks. I could very easily recreate the look of historical fashions with pieces from my closet, and while it wouldn’t be that accurate, it would certainly have style.
Another great aspect of this book is that it also takes the reader into modern times. It shows the ins and outs of the modern day (for the publication date) fashion industry, and it isn’t averse to showing the bad. There’s also portraits of historical fashionistas and very creative use of art and photos which just adds to the appeal of this book. It was one of my most reread books.
A cute book encompassing style from 5,000 years ago showcasing what the Greeks wore to present day looks and how they influence fashion. There are examples of outfits showing some of these elements but incorporated in a modern day look. This is a short read but full of information that is helpful. Example being, there is a section devoted to the various designers who have made their marks on fashion. There is a section on the all the runway shows and fashion weeks held in various cities around the world showcasing the latest designs. There is actually a fair bit packed into this small book and I quite enjoyed it.
Quick, colorful overview of fashion history in the typical DK style with lots of little asides discussing fabrics, underpinnings, shoes, the language of fans, etc.. Includes "get the look" hints to show budding fashionistas how to incorporate elements of the past into modern dress styles. Nice mix of period illus, photos of museum pieces, drawings and charts plus glossary, designer directory and an index.
I loved this book when I was in fifth grade so I wanted to read it for the nostalgia. It’s super great and I would recommend for any tweens who like fashion.
It's very interesting, even for adults. It gives little snippets of information, some of them I knew, some of them I didn't. It's a real fun read. Who knew fake eyebrows made of mouse fur was an actual thing!
In this Fall's line up from ever-reliable DK, The Fashion Book is a gem for teen fans of fashion. In it, we learn about the history of clothing, how styles have changed because of necessity and societal shifts (good riddance to corsets!). Readers can pick up tips about how to get the feel of a look from another era in a modern ensemble without looking like a period costume. The editors also sneak in some historical and literary references, as in the Modern Tomboy look from Rosie the Riveter and The Modern Romantic based on Jane Austen characters.
The Fashion Book also gives snippet-sized insights into different careers in fashion, along with some facts about the designers and labels we see in glossy magazine ads. Part style advice, part history lesson, and part pop culture, this one is a keeper.
A little messy and disorganised - there are snippets with quotes, pictures, bits of info, etc all over the page. Laid out more like a scrapbook. However I did enjoy the '50s section - some of the dresses featured are really pretty. I also liked seeing the retro/vintage shoe styles, many of which I feel are far prettier and more practical than some of today's designs. There's definitely a lot of eye candy in this book and some fashion/style inspiration.
this book is nothing compared to the big fashion book. i was not feeling the book and the only real thing that i can remember from it was that in the 60s there was such a thing as paper panties. in the words of one of my friends... what happens when you sneeze? good for interesting facts but not the best book i have ever read on fashion.
This book is simply wonderful. I have a huge interest for the history of fashion: what people wore back then, the fabrics, etc. and this bok was full of details and beautiful pictures. I recommend it to everyone. It is just so interesting and fascinating! (it's more of an history book, in my opinion)
It felt very much like the traditional DK book in that there were lots of little snippets of information arranged around graphics. My guess would be that the target audience of this book would be 10-16 year-old girls looking to learn a little more about fashion and how to jazz up their wardrobe a little bit. Not particularity helpful for an adult who has a clear fashion sense already.
A great little book with a good mix of style advice and historical reference. I really like the pages that follow the story of leather, or silk or lace. would make a great present for a girl 8+ (note no upper age limit) interested in fashion.
Lovely, high-quality survey of fashion history meant for teens. Tons of photos, of course. Tons of fascinating history tidbits. Won't date quickly -- could stay in your library collection for a decade. Worth its weight in lesser teen fashion surveys and a bargain at $15.99.
Take a colorful trip around the fashion world with looks made famous throughout history, from Medieval to modern. Learn how you can create fresh versions of timeless classics and how new fashions are made trendy by designers and their famous wearers. Reviewer 16
History of fashion throughout the ages. The saying "History repeats itselfs" can also apply to fashion. Also a section on how you can dress vintage cheaply!
