Wrenly had known one fact for the past thirty the man she loved cursed her, and that curse took her soul. She had spent decades running, hating and hiding.
And promising that she would never, ever give in to the man who hunted her.
Ratchet only ever had one goal since his wedding to find his wife. Always desperately searching for his lost mate.
When outside forces bound them together once more, Wren must decide,
Could she get back what was stolen?
Or would the curse woven into the land, into her, drive them apart forever?
Solid start to a new series that I will DEFINITELY be following along. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read , the plot was refreshing and the MMC and FMC are superb. The yearning, sexual tension, loathing and loving between them was off the scale. If you're a fan of: -childhood friends to lovers -shadow daddy MMC who is devoted, burn the world for her, touch her and die, HE WASHES HER HAIR!!! Did I also mention he's a dragon shifter? -Morally grey witch FMC -Curses -Forced Proximity It does end on a cliffhanger but that just makes me more excited for the next installment. It was a privilege to receive an ARC. I know this is the start of something epic 😍
Wow! I ate this book up. I wasn't sure if I was going to do a 4 or 5 star review. But in the end, the fact that I couldn't put it down made me go for 5 stars. This to me was a fantastic read. Why you ask? Well for one I was tripping over a zillion different worlds, names I couldn't pronounce, and a zillion creatures. I don't necessarily mind that sometimes, but oftentimes it makes digesting the story a challenge because you're trying to keep track of everything.
The story follows Wren and Ratchet following the events that unfold after their wedding night. Wren is cursed and flees running away and Ratchet spends 30 years chasing her. When he finally catches up to her they both have to confront their past, the present and what will happen in the future. it's complicated, messy and no one really knows the whole truth, of anything. From feelings, to what happened, to why and the threat to their world. But their choices not only affected each other but their families, friends and the world itself.
This story was easy to follow in the sense that you know there is more to come and unfold, but it's focuses on a shorter period of time (while covering briefly 30 years). This is more a character driven story than a plot driven story, however there is a lot of plot there and I assume more to come. The multi-pov allows you to enter in different perspectives which I always enjoy because you can really get a feel of their intentions and feelings. Like someone is showing you behind the curtain. There is a decent amount of spice which I enjoyed. Wren and Ratchet's journey is exciting and it's also heartbreaking. There is so much there to unpack and literally that's all you want to do. I found myself reading, hoping, and enjoying every moment of the ride. I liked the magic system, it was easy to follow and the "species" she had written. Having really only magic uses and shifters, made it easy to follow everyone's journey and purpose. I also like the representation of a more reasonably sized woman plus they were older which was a nice change. It ends on not exactly a cliffhanger per se, but close enough. My heart was in my throat the whole second half of the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I cannot wait till book 2! Thank you for the ARC @H.L. Charlesworth!
The Red Witch is a fantasy romance novel with elemental magic and a total page- turner. With an incredibly propulsive storyline you will be intrigued from page one for sure. The magic system is well developed and has great twists and turns that you won't see coming.
This dark, captivating narrative weaves a spellbinding tale of star-crossed lovers, Wren and Ratchet, bound together by a centuries-old curse. With a richly atmospheric setting and complex characters, this story delves into the depths of love, loss, and the unrelenting power of fate.
Wren's decades-long struggle to evade the curse and her husband's relentless pursuit raises questions about the true cost of love and the devastating consequences of a bond that cannot be broken. Ratchet's unwavering dedication to reclaiming his lost mate adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, blurring the lines between love and obsession.
When Ratchet finally finds and catches her, everything changes and the curse's grip on their lives tightens. Will they find a way to break free, or will their love be forever doomed?
This book is a must-read for fans of fantasy romance novels. The elemental magic and surprises especially the second half of the book were absolutely amazing. Be prepared for a haunting, emotional journey that will leave you breathless and yearning for more.
4.5⭐️ This was a terrific read that I really enjoyed, a great start to a new series.
The story starts off with a bang, throwing you right into a tense confrontation between the MCs. There was never a dull moment, the plot, the memory flashbacks, the curse, the impending war, the delicious tension between the MCs, this held my interest the entire time. MMC Ratchet is a shadow daddy dragon shifter, need I say more?
The book ends with what I think may be a pivotal moment for the FMC Wren and I can’t wait to see how this story continues.
Wren has spent the past 30 years running, ever since the curse stole her soul on her wedding night, moments after bonding with her husband, Ratchet, through a dragon bond. Believing Ratchet is responsible, she flees from him, her memories, and the hate fueled by castle propaganda that paints all witches as evil.
Ratchet finally tracks her down, captures her, and returns her to their home. Wren, unaware of key details about her past, assumes she's being brought back to face execution.
Wren is a powerful mage, wielding control over the four elements, and, unbeknownst to all but Ratchet, she also possesses rare soul magic. Ratchet, a dragon shifter with shadow magic, is equally formidable. Despite her battle training and decades of evasion, Wren is described as round-faced, soft, and out of practice, which contrasts with her formidable magical abilities. Still, her inner strength and immense magical power are central to the story.
Ratchet, unwavering in his love for Wren, has spent years searching for her, determined to bring her home. Their reunion is fraught with tension, as Wren harbors anger and distrust.
The plot unfolds in a tense, dark atmosphere as Wren strikes an alliance with the King to fight the elusive Dark Witch in exchange for her freedom. While moments of vulnerability spark hope in Wren that the curse may be breaking, she soon finds evidence to the contrary, hardening her resolve to embrace the evil persona the world believes her to be: the Red Witch.
Fast-paced and filled with action, The Red Witch blends magic, political intrigue, and twists that keep readers hooked. Though Wren’s physical portrayal may seem inconsistent with her battle-hardened past, her emotional depth and magical prowess make her a captivating character. The book concludes with an intriguing setup for the next installment, leaving readers eager for more.
Something that's really awesome about being an ARC reader for not just one, but two books, is getting to see the authors growth and development between each story. I so appreciate the opportunity to read H.L. Charlesworth's books and I was so pleasantly surprised at how new and unique this plot felt.
Right from page one we're dropped into the middle of the action. Wren, the FMC, has been cursed and on the run from her husband for 30 years and he's only getting closer to catching her. Ratchet, the MMC and Wren's husband, has been chasing his wife for 30 years trying to bring her home, but she keeps narrowly escaping him. After some negligence on her end and some luck on his, Ratchet finally captures her and when he does, everything starts to unravel for Wren. Her curse is meant to strip her of all emotion, but as Ratchet bares his soul to her and reintroduces her to the life she left behind, memories start flooding in and Wren battles with what it truly means to live life as the Red Witch.
I loved that we get so many detailed flashbacks that truly paint the picture of who Wren was prior to her curse and they create such a beautiful picture of her relationship with Ratchet. Their love is pure and all consuming and took me on quite a few highs and lows while reading. My heart breaks for them both.
I also really enjoyed the mixing of magical beings and magic. Wren is a mage with elemental magic while Ratchet is a dragon shifter with shadow magic and both are among the most powerful in recent history. We only start to touch on the depths of their powers and I'm very intrigued to see how they play out in book 2 and how it all ties into the politics and ongoing war.
Definitely give this a read if you love multiple, first person POV's, a game of cat and mouse, bonded mates, curses, and a story that will tug on your emotions.
What a great start to this series! This book, for me, was an absolute page turner and I couldn’t put it down. It hooked me in straight away and I was completely invested in Wren and Ratchet’s story, which is both heart wrenching and exciting. It really tugs on the heart strings and the tension and yearning felt really tangible. I loved them both as MCs. I also really liked Sin as a character, Wren’s sister, and enjoyed her PoV throughout the book.
A must read if you love: ✨multiple POVs ✨cat and mouse ✨fated mates ✨childhood friends to lovers ✨morally grey FMC ✨dragon shifter MMC ✨forced proximity ✨elemental and shadow magic ✨ curses
I loved that this was a very character driven story but with a well crafted plot that weaves through the character development. I liked that the magic system was easy to understand yet still retained a uniqueness that makes it stand out more compared to other books currently around. We are given a taste of world building within the story and get a sense of the scale involved in this fascinating world, but this was more about learning about the characters in this book I feel. We see how choices that were made had not only an effect on the MCs but a wider effect on those close to them. I enjoyed the flashbacks throughout the book and I thought this worked really well to connect past and present actions. There were lots of twists and turns to keep up with and I felt we were only just scratching the surface of the storyline in this book, with so many details and elements to unpack. I am very much looking forward to seeing what happens next and cannot wait for book two. It was a real privilege to read this advanced reader copy, so thank you to the author. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.
No Spoilers Review Huge thank you to @hlcharlesworth for the opportunity to read an ARC copy!
Synopsis: Wren has been on the run for thirty years. The one chasing her? Her husband and the man who cursed her and took away her soul. Ratchet has given up everything desperately trying to find his lost mate who ran off the night of their wedding. When she is finally caught, Wren must finally decide. Does she want her her life back or be alone forever?
Review: Let me tell you, everyone wants a Ratchet in their lives. You will absolutely love Ratchet (and the multi-POV gives us an insight into his thoughts!). I LOVED this book and felt it was unique and did not want to put it down. There are so many secrets and everyone is hiding something. There is a cliffhanger and I really do need book two ASAP.
Bottom Line: There is something here for everyone. Cat and Mouse? Check. Dragon Shifter? Check. Second Chance? Check. Burn the World? Check. Who did this to you? Yeah we got you. I approve!
My favorite quote is one of their vows (you can read to find out!), and the original quote that was shared for me to read the book! "𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 ******* 𝘸𝘢𝘳, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘯𝘰𝘵. 𝘞𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘢 𝘷𝘰𝘸, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘵.
Firstly, thank you so much to H.L. Charlesworth for the gifted review copy. I’ll never stop being grateful to authors for taking a chance!
I was super excited to jump into an entirely new world (I loved Bound by Starlight) and magic system with The Red Witch and it did not disappoint! I can’t imagine spending decades apart from such an integral part of your soul under such pretenses as this series starts…it’s wild. Wren is just a b*d*ss, honestly. She doesn’t take lip from anyone and she’s snarky as all get out. While some may not understand her motivations or morals, because yes she is misunderstood in my opinion, it doesn’t change who she is or how she conducts herself. A female warrior will forever be a win in my book as well. She can go toe to toe with her mate, a DRAGON shifter, and that’s just so cool to me. Ratchet is such a green flag kind of man. Yeah there’s some possessiveness there but we like that right? His loyalty never wavers, even chasing Wren for so long and the vitriol she spews at him any time they interact. True. Dedication. His support of her in all things and acceptance of who she currently is, not her potential, is *chef’s kiss* perfection.
I can’t wait to get into this series further, the author set us up nicely for a few potential options and I have my theories…on to the next one!
The Red Witch is the breathtaking first installment in the Accursed Soul series, and it has easily become one of my top reads of the year!
After falling in love with Bound by Starlight, I had high expectations for this book, and HL Charlesworth did not disappoint. From the very first page, I was completely immersed in this hauntingly beautiful tale of love, betrayal, and fate.
Wrenly has spent decades running from the man who cursed her, vowing never to fall into his grasp again. But Ratchet has never stopped searching for his lost wife, determined to break the curse that stole her soul. When outside forces force them together once more, they must face the question: Is love enough to undo what was done, or will destiny tear them apart forever?
The cat-and-mouse dynamic between Wren and Ratchet was absolutely addictive, and the tension kept me on edge the entire time. And that cliffhanger? Utterly brutal. I would do just about anything for just one more chapter! I can’t wait to get my hands on book two. If you love dark fantasy, intense romance, and a story that lingers long after the final page, The Red Witch is a must-read! And lucky for you, it was released today! Get it now on KU!
A mage and her childhood love get married. However, during the consummation portion she lost something essential to her husband on their wedding night. Now she feels dead inside. He has chased her around the world for 30 years and when he catches up to her, he poisons her so her magic doesn't work and leads her around on a leash like a dog!
Now their challenge is to learn to trust each other again to accomplish a singular goal: defeat the Dark Witch. OH! Witches are different than mages. Witches are evil. So our FMC must fight prejudices to save the entire kingdom from the darkness that befalls them whilst gaining back the love and trust of all those she left behind 30 years ago.
I was HOOKED from the beginning! YOU WILL NOT WANT TO MISS THIS ADVENTURE! The vibes match The Witch Collector by Charissa Weaks, the FMC’s DGAF in Gods & Monsters by Amber V. Nicole, and the protective MMC in The Divine and the Cursed by J.E. Reed.
Tropes: Fated mates, second chance love, miscommunication, secrets and curses, shadow daddy, elemental magic, forced proximity
What I loved: The emotional TURMOIL Betrayal (perceived and actual!) The pacing - high adrenaline!
“Your parents call you little willow, but you’re not just a tree, you’re the whole earth. You are strength and roots, resilience and growth. You smell like the forest, like the damp air after it rains on the flower beds.”
I’d like my own Ratchet, please and thank you 💁♀️
The Red Witch is book one of the Accursed Soul series. We get a wonderful layout of where the storyline is going, and a good chunk of the past. I absolutely loved Wren and Ratchet’s history and how their story continues to develop. Ratchet’s devotion to Wren makes my heart want to burst with happiness. I hope he finds a way to help her😭 Wren is one badass FMC. As much this curse is affecting her it seems there’s a small piece of her that is fighting back. Her powers are my absolute favorite thing in the story. I can’t wait to learn more about them! I enjoyed the POV of her little sister. It added to the storyline as it shows the many people that do still care for Wren, no matter her new identity as The Red Witch.
The ending, I totally seen coming. BUT it still left me with that WTF feeling because I want to know what she’s feeling!!!!!
*ARC* I am shooketh with this book!!! I got all the feels and I couldn't put it down. This book just ripped my heart out!!! I absolutely loved it.
The premise of this book is just so interesting. Wren is a mage who has become cursed, hence the red witch. She has been cursed to feel absolutely nothing. No emotions. And she's on the run from her husband, Ratchet who is a dragon shifter. I mean he has wings and everything.
I absolutely fell in love with these characters. You feel their pain, their conflict, their emotions. And the flashbacks for Wren are just heartbreaking.
The relationship between Wren and Ratchet is so intense and you can just feel the emotions. The spice was spicing and I loved it!!! The pull they have for each other is just so beautiful!!!
I am so excited for book 2, I cannot wait to read what happens next. I feel like it'll rip my heart out but I'm rooting for these characters
I was graciously gifted a copy of the book by the author and I am excited to leave a review.
This is the first book in the Accursed Soul Duology. H.L. Charlesworth does a great job creating relatable and interesting characters and building a word and a plot that you want to be in and follow.
Wren is a tragic character that you cannot help but feel for as she deals with the loss of her soul to the curse and her dilemma around getting her soul back as she navigates the damage done to those she loves as well as herself as the result of the curse.
Ratchet is a top tier MMC whose love and devotion for his wife is both heartbreaking and admirable (seriously, he chases her for 30 years to get her back) as you hear what he has gone through and continues to go through in his pursuit of his beloved wife.
I look forward to reading the next book and seeing how the plot continues to unfold.
There is so much I loved about this book. I loved how it started with their wedding and the trial of finding their way back to one another. Such a cool idea and journey to go on! Their connection was really addictive.
The magic was awesome!!! I loved her affinity with the earth, and how that side of her power manifests. Such a sweet relationship.
Ratchet…. Swoooooooon! ❤️
I won’t say much more so I don’t give it away, but I can feel that this story is only just ramping up! The additional POVs, mysteries, omg you know the political and magical secrets are going to be amazing!
I cannot wait for book 2!
I was gifted this eARC directly from HL Charlesworth. Thank you. My review is my honest take on the story.
It took me a couple tries to get into this one only bc it started off not being my pace and I struggled with the Wren (the MFC) being soul less. I found it hard to connect with Wren. I adored the MMC Ratchet! I think the only reason I pushed through was bc of his devotion to Wren.
With that being said that should in no way be a deciding factor in whether or not to read this book! The plot is strong! The side characters are great, some you still want to punch, but others really helped me believe Wren is going to be better.
I am looking forward to the next one. This one ends on a cliffhanger and I’m hoping the next will have more action and more answers. The building blocks are set I’m definitely ready to get more answers.
Absolutely obsessed with this book & these characters! I had the privilege of being a critique partner for this story and the growth from day one is astonishing. With every new book H.L. Charlesworth writes, her style and confidence just comes to life through her stories. The main characters of The Red Witch, Wren and Ratchet are to die for - and Ratchet literally would die for Wren. Hell, he goes after her for 30 years because he cannot stand to be apart from her. Talk about expectations for a husband! If you are looking for a badass fmc, a mmc that will rip the world apart for the one he loves, and tension that you'd literally need a goddamn machete to cut, then this is most definitely the book for you. I'm obssesseddd...(and so is Ratchet)
If you like fated mates, a strong FMC and an obsessed MC with extraordinary powers then this is the book for you!
Wren, our FMC, is a badass Witch who apologises to no one. It is SO lovely to read a female character that isn't 19, such a nice change of pace. Learning all her secrets and powers is going to be a fun ride...
I loved the pacing of the book. You explore a new world, learn a new story and get some fantastic yearning between lovers. And my favourite trope, a man who will burn the world for his love.
I'm so excited to see what the next installment brings. Because that ending? Well, I need answers immediately 😅
TROPES 📌 Hot Dragon Shifter and Mage Woman 📌 Romantacy 📌 Forced Proximity
Reading Journey 📌 Day 1:12% 📌 Day 2: 29% 📌 Day 3: 100%
First of all, thanks a lot to the author for this arc🫶🫶.
MY POV
📌 This book started with a lot of excitement and had me on toes for the initial first half. The second one although was just moving in rounds and rounds.
📌 I loved seeing Wren in all of her glory and badass era BUT also felt like the main plot of the story was not properly used.
All in all, loved the characters and first half. Could have been better for the second one though.
l really enjoyed this book. It was my first dragon shifter romance, and I am not complaining. The story was heartbreaking in the best way. The angst and yearning was delicious. Who doesn't want a partner who never gives up on you no matter how far into darkness you fall? He followed her for 30 YEARS! Thirty. Years. I can't wait to read the next book and find out how this plays out. Also looking forward to learning more about Bareris and Sin. Many thanks for sharing this wonderful ARC with me! ♥️
From the moment you start reading this book, it's a quick drop into an intense story with so many questions and mystery around it. Wren, FMC is a stubborn, brave woman that is navigating her life with a curse that she was given or so she thinks. You have multiple POVs throughout the story which increases the mystery even more on what is really the truth. It seems like there is a deeper meaning and truth to what Wren believes happened when she was 'cursed' versus what others know and see. The cliffhanger just left me hanging there wanting to know what this reveal will do or mean!!
This was a fantastic start to this new series. I will definitely keep reading as the story unfolds. If you like a shadow daddy dragon shifter mmc, a morally grey mmc, a not overly complicated world building, magic, curses & witches, childhood friends to lovers, tension and forced proximity, then I highly recommend you pick up this book. I received an arc of this book and all opinions are my own.
Okayyyyy. Guys. This book was SOOO GOOODDD!! I am thrilled that I have finally had the time to sit and properly enjoy this book. The story is amazing and the spice is so good without taking away from the plot. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!!
- childhood friends, to lovers, to enemies, to lovers again - curses - shadow daddy/dragon shifter mmc - elemental magic - morally grey fmc - forced proximity - second chance romance
❤️🔥 Absolutely obsessed!! I could only hope to understand the love and passion Ratchet has for Wren. Brings tears to my eyes. And that ending!!!!!!! Screaming over here!!!!!! The love. The heartbreak. The emotions. Waiting for Part 2 will be torture. This book was impossible to put down. Super unique magic and something I've never read before. Currently available on KU and paperbacks on the way.
This is such an amazing story! Great characters and good world building. Made me feel for Ratchet and Wren. I enjoy all the magic and the dragon background. Hopefully there will be a second book cause it ends on a cliffhanger! Thank you H.L. For a wonderful story!
I received this book as an ARC, and I enjoyed reading it. The author was able to move the story along while also throwing in bits of the past to understand the characters. I absolutely loved that the FMC was independent and kick ass! Can’t wait to see how this story continues to unfold.
If you are looking for a cat and mouse romance, with spice, where the FMC isn't a tiny, 18-25 year old, but instead a bold, strong fiery redhead this is definitely a book you want to read. I definitely look forward to the next one!
The push and pull between these characters are electric. The author has created a world that begs for more to be explored between Ratchet and Wren. This is a great start to what promises to be a fantastic series, can't wait for more!
