Daytona Fury #3

Double Play

Hawk

Since I was a teenager, I’ve used baseball as a way to distract myself from everything my life was missing. I grew up too fast, taking care of my two younger brothers. They were all I had, until one day, they were taken away and I was alone. Being drafted by the Daytona Fury brought with it a gift I wasn’t expecting—my best friend, Jackson Blake. I’ve opened up to him about my past and he’s accepted me for who I am, but I’ve never felt fully understood…at least not until I met his stepsister. Arden makes me feel seen, and she’s secretly owned a piece of me for years. The problem? He’s in love with her too.

Jackson

I’ve known Arden Levine since we were kids, but by the time I was ready to shoot my shot with her, it was too late. Our parents’ whirlwind engagement and wedding turned us from friends to step siblings, and any chance at a future with her flew right out the window. I thought I was okay with knowing we could never be, but now that I’m forced to sit back and watch my best friend have everything I’ve always wanted but gave up on long ago, I’m not so sure.

Arden

As a member of Florida’s first professional volleyball team, the pressure to be perfect is constantly there. Some days, it’s great. Others, the darkness finds me and pulls me under. Jackson has always been a source of comfort, but now that I’m living with him and his best friend, Hawk Mason, I find myself seeking solace in both of them—each in very different ways. As confusing as my feelings for these two have been for a long time, I’m starting to wonder what it would be like to really have it all.

Barely a why choose (FMC has a clear favorite)

This is actually the worst type of Why Choose. First, it’s established that Jacks has been in love with Arden since they were kids but he doesn’t tell her because they soon become step siblings.

His best friend, Hawks, knows Jacks is in love with Arden and doesn’t hesitate before he gets together with Arden anyway. Then multiple times, Hawks thinks to himself “I should feel guilty for hurting Jacks, but I don’t.”

Jacks gets neglected and his feelings get stomped on by his two best friends for almost half the book. And when he finally gets included in this “why choose” situation, it’s from a sex scene that he overheard and joined in on. Not from Arden actually being kind to him like she was with Hawks. She treats Jacks like a step brother fetish but treats Hawks like a boyfriend.

I actually really like C.L Rose for most her other books. But she needs to stay away from these types. I’m guessing the high reviews are from the sex scenes and not actually wanting to see a loving and healthy poly relationship.

I really wished Jacks fell in love with someone who actually cared about him. Both people in their poly relationship did not care about him the same way they cared about each other. It was more like “we’re a couple, Jacks. You can either join or go away because we come first.” There are better poly romances where the female character doesn’t have clear favorites and treats both her partners with equal love and respect. This is 1000% not one of them.

I’m going to have to recommend my “why choose” girlies to avoid this book. I’m so disappointed. I really wanted to feature this in a positive light 😭 I still love her other books though!

C.L Rose has done it AGAIN. Each book in this series just GRABBED me in ways I can’t even explain to you. When I saw this book was going to be MFM? Well you better believe my smut loving 🍑 KNEW it was going to be SPOICYYY and boy was it ever !

Hawk and Jackson are best friends. Teammates, roommates, life long bros. They do everything together and their friendship was truly beautiful to experience. They may not be romantically involved, but they share so well 😉

Arden just landed her dream job on the Florida Flare Women’s Volleyball team. She’s worked so hard, she’s struggled, and she’s ready to prove herself. The only problem? Well now she has to move in with her stepbrother, Jackson and his moody roommate. BUT DONT WORRY, there’s nothing to be afraid of. These three know how to have a good time, and their chemistry is off the charts!

I don’t want to spoil too much for you as far as relationship dynamics here but they all share a history. Obviously Jacks and Arden are step siblings, and Hawk has kind of always been around (moody, but around) so their relationships flowed perfectly. They didn’t have any problem jumping into something serious because those relationships were already formed. And they flowed, seamlessly.

There was no point where I felt like the boys were attracted to one another, nor did I feel like I was wishing Arden wasn’t there (which is rare for me in an MFM or MMF dynamic) which is a true testament to Candice’s writing.

This book was all things spicy, fun, and surprisingly emotional for me. I wasn’t expecting to have tears in my eyes at many parts of their story, but again, just a testament to the beautiful story set up for them. Both Arden and Hawk struggle with anxiety, and watching them help one another as well as support one another with their struggles was truly beautiful to experience.

There were multiple spicy scenes in this book that will live RENT FREE in my 🧠, some baseball, some volleyball, some baking, some sp*nking, a leash & collar, some more spice, some drama, some Monroe & Riggs, a little bit of Lark & a drunk Ace, and just a whole lot of love and passion. Beautifully pieced together in a wonderful love story that I’ll never forget.

SPICE 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.25 (yes I realize this is a weird spice rating but this one says “I’m a little hotter than a plain 4 peppers” trust me)

Okay, hot holy mother of the universe!!! This book was everything I wanted and more in an MFM romance. Hawk, Arden and Jacks’ stories were told so well, and the relationships between all of them together and individually just sent me into all my feels.

Ans if there is something CL ROSE ✨TRULY✨ excels at, it’s top tier spice that will always keep pushing your boundaries and keep you wanting more. Ans this spice. THIS SPICE, it might truly be her spiciest yet!

✨ MFM BASEBALL ROMANCE
✨ GRUMPY MMC X SUNSHINE MMC
✨ PROFESSIONAL VOLLEYBALL PLAYER FMC
✨ SOFT DOM VS HARD DOM
✨ STEPSIBLINGS /STEPBROTHERS BEST FRIEND
✨ ANXIETY REP

If this book had a tagline it really would be “why choose between this one and that one when you can have both” hawk is the Grumpy MMC, Jackson is pure sunshine. Hawk loves degradation, Jackson will call you a “good girl” all night long.

And Arden won the boyfriend lottery because she gets the best of both worlds. It’s truly immaculate. Like I screamed, I cried, I gasped and I overheated all while having my jaw on the floor because it’s just THAT GOOD.

ARC REVIEW
RELEASES 4/24

✨️C.L. Rose writes some of the best spicy sports romances. The step brother trope in this is different because they became step siblings when they were seniors in high school. Before that, they were best friends and harboring feelings for each other. Neither of them knew. Arden gets the best of both worlds. Hawk is this broody bad boy, but he gets her and what she needs. Jackson is seriously the sweetest. This book was super spicy but didn't take away from the plot. I definitely recommend it!

BETA READ - ARC REREAD

When Candice first told me she would be doing a why choose for her next book my jaw fell to the floor. I could not think of a better person to put such sensitive and important topics and feelings and characters into reality. You absolutely blew this one out of the park.

Arden is a pro volleyball player and when she signs with her new team she moves in with her stepbrother and former best friend, Jackson, and his best friend, Hawk, both MLB players. While their attraction has always taken a back burner, neither Hawk or Jacks can deny how they feel for Arden when they’re placed in close proximity to each other. As feelings progress with Hawk and Arden, Jackson tries to deny his role and take a step back…that is until the three of them realize that they are much more perfect together than they could ever be apart.

Throughout this story I was blown away but the accurate, real and raw depiction of not only anxiety and panic attacks, but the real inner monologue that I have had with myself depicted on the pages by these characters. Not only do they rely on each other to overcome their differences but they find a new normal and a new home along the way. I love all three of these beautifully broken individuals so much I don’t think it would be possible to pick a favorite (*COUGH* ITS HAWK *COUGH*). Arden’s tenacity, resilience and spark for life. Hawk’s devotion, stability and vulnerability. Jackson’s support, love and trust. They are all absolutely perfect in their own ways and I could not think of a single thing I would or could change about even a word in this book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️♾️

A new roman empire. Possibly my favorite book of all time.
I don’t think it would be possible to put into words how much this book and these characters and this story means to me. Being a part of this journey with you is something I will never forget. Candice, thank you for trusting me, for valuing me, for allowing me to stand beside you throughout this unforgettable ride. Love you most 🖤

📖 When Arden gets drafted to Florida’s first pro volleyball team, she ends up rooming with her stepbrother Jackson and his best friend Hawk. Without spoiling any of the dynamics, there is a past between Arden and Jacks, as well as Arden and Hawk.

I really loved the dynamic between Arden, jacks and hawk. From the realistic way Arden and Hawk bond over their anxiety, to the friendship between hawk and jacks and the competition between the two of them when it comes to Arden, and also Jacks’ fear of letting them down.

Candice writes some of my favorite spice of all time, and this one was even spicier than the last. I absolutely loved the “good cop, bad cop” way she wrote jacks’ praise and Hawk’s degradation. The perfect blend of 2 personalities. The collar and leash moment?? 🥵 There are so many amazing scenes that will live rent free in my brain.

Once again, CL Rose was able to provide the rollercoaster of emotions I’ve come to expect from her writing where one moment I’m laughing, then I’m panting, and then I’m crying. Her stories are so unique and give everything I’m looking for in a romance novel.

TLDR : if you love a spicy why choose, hilarious banter, and sports romance, you absolutely need to add Double Play to your TBR! CL Rose continues to solidify herself as one of my favorite authors and I cannot recommend her books enough!

Thank you so much to CL Rose and her team for the opportunity to arc read Double Play! 🖤

You know what C.L. doesn’t get enough credit for? Her ability to tell a story. Yes, she’s the spice queen, and she does that aspect of her stories immaculately. Double Play is no exception to that rule, and honestly, it has my 2 favorite, unbelievably hot scenes she’s written so far. But beyond that—

The anxiety rep that she writes with Arden in this book is so freaking good and will resonate with so many. The way she explains Jackson’s worries and fears in going public with a polyamorous relationship is (I think) so well explored. And the way broken boy Hawk shows his vulnerability and grows as a character—my favorite part of the story, by far (ch. 26 is probably my favorite of all). The three legit complete each other and they all shine in their own ways.

The entire Daytona Fury Series is testament to C.L.’s continued growth as a writer. Each book shows her versatility in creating characters who you’ll become invested in, stories that will stick with you, and yes, unlocking new kinks.

When Candice dropped the bomb she was going to be writing an MFM book, I was PUMPED. I loveeee me a good why choose romance.

I loved all three of these characters. Hawk is hands down my favorite. I love me a tattooed, bad boy who ends up being so down bad for his girl. Jackson was such a sweet, angel baby. He’s been in love with Arden since they were kids & he finally shoots his shot. Step-siblings be damned🤣 Arden was a fantastic FMC. She was strong, dedicated & loved so hard. My girl knew exactly what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to voice it. These three full of chemistry.

The spice was spicing too, let me tell you 👏😮‍💨 I was sweating during every single scene. ESPECIALLY the group ones 🫠

Thank you so much CL Rose for this ARC 🤍 I’m excited to see what’s coming next 😍

Double Play
By C.L. Rose

Jackson
My friendship with Arden began in the fourth grade. Her mom had just been relocated to France for work, and she moved to our small town of Tinsville, Pennsylvania with her dad. From the moment my teacher asked me to show her around the school, we were inseparable. I immediately took on the role of her protector, and that’s how it was for years. It wasn’t until eleventh grade that I realized my feelings for her had begun to morph into something else.

Hawk
I wish I could explain any of it, but I just can’t. And the worst part of it all is that I can’t even talk to Jackson about it. Because he’s in love with her. He has no idea I know, which is good because I’d hate to tell him that I’m fully aware, yet still have an overwhelming need to possess every part of her body and soul.

Arden
I knew it was wrong and that he was my stepbrother, but for years, I’d wondered if he’d ever seen me as anything more than a friend. It was risky and stupid, but it didn’t stop me from wanting to feel it, if only for a second.

I’ve always thought Hawk was hot as f***, but it was never more than that. He’s like a random celebrity you see on TV, drool over, then move on with your life because he’s unattainable. Even now, I know that’s true, but I can’t stop my traitorous body from reacting to the innocent gesture.

Hawk, Arden, Jackson’s story is so hot!! Hawk and Jackson are a perfect pair for Arden. Hawk is rough and tough while Jackson is gentle and loving. And they bring out the best in each other. What a fun and hot read!

Jackson has been in love with his step-sister, Arden, since high school. Unfortunately, their parents ended up together first and he backed off.
Arden ends up moving in with him and his best friend, Hawk, when she relocates for volleyball.

Hawk and Jackson make the perfect pair for Arden. Jackson gives her all of the praise while Hawk dishes out degradation like it’s her last meal.

Hawk has worked through his own stuff in the past so when Arden needs someone who can calm her down, Hawk is her guy. I loved the mental health representation in this book. I felt seen when these scenes came up, spot on!

What will their parents and the public think of their MFM relationship dynamic? Add it to your TBR to find out! If there’s one thing Candice knows how to do well-is write a sports romance with ALL the spice!

CL Rose has done it again; pushing boundaries with some unforgettable spice and banter, but also telling a truly heartwarming story!

I really enjoyed this story and really appreciate how each character gave each other something different. I thought she explored the mental health side of things really well, and in a super relatable way. I loved how she wrote each man; Jackson as Arden’s safe, comforting place to land and Hawk as her rock - the one who can help her clear her head and let go. The friendship between Hawk and Jackson also played a really important part here, and I really did love the dynamic between the three of them. Candice honestly did such a good job for her first MFM book! I hope she writes more 🤭🤭😏😏

Personally, I would have loved some more ✨drama✨ but in saying that this book was very enjoyable without it.

It’s full of loveable characters, banter, baseball, volleyball, a bread baking grumpy boy, lots of cameos (including Tanner!) and a beautiful connection between three hotties. These three really did complete each other and seeing them (especially Hawk and Arden) help each other through their struggles and come out the other side was truly special.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review early! I love being on your team; the group chat is solely worth it 🤭😘

MMC - Hawk Mason
MMC - Jackson Blake
FMC - Arden Levine

Double Play is MFM romance which is something, I don’t usually read but Candice wrote so I had to read it. Let me tell you, I do NOT regret it at all and so glad I decided to give it a chance.
The spicy scenes are extra spicy and DP is absolutely explicit on page.
This book is not just spicy, though, I cried and laughed too. There’s a triggering subject that affects the MCs which will also be explicit on page.
These two men are completely obsessed with their woman!!!
Jackson and Arden are stepbrother and stepsister and Hawk is Jackson’s best friend and team mate. Together Jackson, Hawk and Arden bring the best out of each other.
And … expect a bonus chapter for our favorite furry mascot, Friggle 😏🤭

Enjoy !!!!!

I would just like to say that this masterpiece of a book is literally the reason why I READ ROMANCE BOOKS. Watching our girl Arden, be wined, dined, taken care, and get railed by not only one but TWO sexy men.. I mean literally is this not your dream in life, because it’s mine? This is a MFM Romance, and yall the spice….. you’re just not even ready. (Chapter 46, Good Lord I was SWEATINGGGG).

And although it’s a spicy Why Choose, there is also so much emotional depth, and mental health awareness here. This wasn’t just a fluffy fun romance, the three of them dealt with difficult decisions, past trauma, anxiety, and trying to figure out how to live their life happily while in the public eye.

I love how Jackson is sweet, and Hawk is rough, yet somehow when they come together they are just perfectly suited for Arden! Their epilogue time jump had me tearing up because getting to see a small glimpse of what their future looked like was so sweet. Also, can’t let this review go on without mentioning we get a full on cameo from DADDY TANNER, and I screamed!!!!

If you’re looking for the best Why Choose, that’s extra spicy, but also super sweet, pick this one up, and enjoy the ride!

Spicy chapters: 13, 16, 19, 20, 25, 31, 32, 33, 37, 46, epilogue

Some of my fave quotes:

“Now, they’re the best part of my day. My peace in the storm. Without them, I don’t even want to think about how incomplete I’d be.”

“If there’s one thing I’m certain of, it’s that Arden is the only person that matters in our world. As long as we have her, we can get through anything.”

“Whatever comes our way, I want to face it together—you, me, and Hawk.”

What on earth just happened… I went into this expecting a spicy baseball romance and I was correct about it being spicy. But it was also so 👏🏼 much 👏🏼 more 👏🏼 I was not expecting all of the emotions that were packed into this book. I had tears in my eyes at 8%, then you get a little further and the spice just HITS. I’m obsessed.

Double play is a why choose (mfm), baseball romance and is book 3 in the Daytona Fury series. It CAN be read as a standalone.

Overview:
Hawk, Jackson and Arden are all roommates after Arden gets picked up by a pro volleyball team in Daytona. Jacks has harbored feelings for her since he was 16. He plans to pine for her forever until he wants in and his best friend (Hawk) and the love of his life are getting after it ;) Hawk has also had secret feelings for Arden for a while too but never planned to act on it. instead of getting angry or jealous they figure out they are a perfect fit. The three of them together are magical.

Characters:
Hawks dominance had me feral. This man could flip a switch and it was HOT. He also had layers to his character. Hawks been through some shit and he’s closed himself off to basically everyone except Jacks and now Arden. The blossoming of his character because of her love melted me to a puddle.

Jackson’s character was sweet, goofy and so genuine. He’s fought his feelings for so long, now he just wants to worship her. She’s back in his life and he can’t see a future without her or his best friend.

Arden is one strong woman. Her character is so resilient. The way she took control of her mental health was powerful. & she loved these two with her whole heart. I just love them!

Jacks needed to get his head on straight towards the end. His heart was in the right place, but I just wanted to shake some sense into him.

Final thoughts:
I consumed this like I needed it to live. I couldn’t get enough of these three. The deep connection between all of the characters made the story so powerful and heartfelt.

3.5 stars. NGL, this rating hurts. I went into this wanting + expecting to love it as a why choose girlie, but sadly the things that bothered me overshadowed what I loved about it. Let's start with what I loved - Hawk (enough said), the friendship between Hawk + Jackson, the banter, and the spice. FREAKING DELICIOUS! I also had no problem with it being MFM (Do I still prefer MMF? Yes, but my issues had nothing to do with this aspect). I did however have a problem with someone feeling left out continuing throughout the entire story, literally. And I can understand it at first, but then an adult conversation needs to happen, and I need all of the involved parties to be on the same page so that the anxiety inducing feeling vacates my body. At one point I felt like I was reading a love triangle. I struggled with Arden being so naive about her coach issue. It was very obvious there was a personal vendetta going on yet she still thought Dahlia would come to realize her plan wasn't working and would let Arden call the plays again all on her own? Sure, Jan. Their plan to tell their parents at the end of their visit was stupid AF and then to start a make-out session when Jacks' mom said she'd be right back was also stupid AF. Which brings us to Jacks. He played the martyr card one too many times then acted like a baby back bitch about it. And even after Lark's come to Jesus chat with him, he still was hell bent on the stupidity that is I know what's best FOR YOU. Yeah, that's gonna be a no from me dawg. Even with all that said, I'm still glad I read their story and loved seeing their HEA/epilogue play out.

Double Play by C.L. Rose eARC Review

Well that was one of the hottest books I’ve ever read. As far as an MFM romance, this one was written SO FREAKING WELL. The way that she truly makes you fall in love with each character separately and then fall in love with their relationship as a whole is so special.

And holy shit, this book had me sweating on several different occasions. SO HOTTTTT. 🥵🥵🥵

Hawk— I instantly fell in love with his closed off, broken down, grumpy personality. Watching Arden and him bond over their struggles and then slowly opening up to one another and seeing a whole new side to him was so damn sweet.

Jackson— To be in love with your step sister your entire life and keep it to yourself. 🥹 He is such a golden retriever and truly takes care of everyone around him. Such a gentleman and is exactly what Hawk and Arden need in their life.

Arden— She is truly a badass. Girl takes what she wants that’s for sure. Watching her deal with anxiety definitely hit home, but seeing her take her life back and work through her struggles with the help of her men was so beautiful.

The relationship between the three of them is one of a kind and they truly complement each other in the best way.

Excuse me, Goodreads, I need an infinity star option because five is not enough for Double Play

Baseball, MFM, stepsister, emotional, soft and hard dom... I mean, how else can you describe perfection C.L. Rose wrote something magical with this one. Double Play has the top tier spice she’s known for, but she took it to a whole new level. And the emotion had me falling in love with each of them individually.

Hard and soft dom is something I never knew I needed but now it’s all I want. The sexual chemistry between these three is off the charts 🥵🥵🥵. This book was meant to be MFM. Not once did I wish for it to cross into MMF territory. C.L. nailed the poly dynamic so well that even as an MM reader, I was glad it stayed MFM.

The anxiety rep Jumped right off the page. The way C.L. captured what Arden was going through felt real. The emotion she poured into her character is what really stood out for me because this woman can write. Each character really stood out in their own way but Arden just holds an extra spot in my heart.

If you’re looking to get lost in a book, trust me, pick up Double Play

Thank you at C.L. Rose for letting be me apart of this one from the beginning, you killed it and forever grateful to receive beta and arc copies from you 💕

I don't know what to say other than Candice has OUTDONE herself, just like she does with every book she writes. I am in love with Arden, Hawk, and Jackon's story.🥵 I don't know to how put into words how excited I am to reread this one (and I only reread my absolute favorites🤣)
Jacks has been in love with Arden since they were little, and he was going to admit his feelings, until he found out that their parents were getting married (talk about a unfortunate situation.) He has been hiding his feelings for so many years, thinking that he will never be able to have what he truly desires.💔
Arden also has deep feelings for Jackson that were never brought to the surface, because they would be seen as wrong. After moving in with Jackson and Hawk to be closer to her new position on a professional volleyball team, it becomes harder to keep her feelings to herself.
Hawk has been through hell. Having grown up in a hard family situation has taken a toll on his ability to open up to others. After becoming his best friend, Jackson helped to show Hawk that he is a good person and deserves good things. But Arden starts to actually break down his walls.
These three connect on a level that brought me to tears multiple times. The spice is off the charts (as Candice always give us.) The banter is just perfect. The spice is amazing. The tattoos, the connections, the necklace, the longing, the pining... I could go on forever; I am just in awe.
To Candice: thank you for giving us these stories that just have so many levels. They are heartwarming, spicy, heart wrenching (in a painfully good way,) and just what we all need. We love you!

The second C.L. Rose announced she was giving us a MFM, I was FERAL and knew I was going to devour this book!

When Arden is drafted to Florida for their women's pro volleyball team, she ends up going to stay with her stepbrother and his best friend until she can get settled in and find her own place.

I instantly fell in love with both Jackson and Hawk for different reasons and their friendship is truly goals. Hawk, a man who feels so broken and doesn't let anyone in, && Jacks, a man who's been pining over the same woman for years - both of them perfectly fit with Arden and they become her safe space and it's so beautiful! And the spice between them is so freaking good, but I expected nothing less! Their chemistry makes it so obvious that they were meant to be and I absolutely loved their story!

What to expect:
-MFM
-Baseball player MMCs
-Volleyball player FMC
-Stepbrother x Stepbrother's bestie
-Forbidden
-Roommates
-Anxiety rep
-Soft dom vs hard dom

Thank you so much to C.L. Rose for letting me read/review an ARC of this book! This series has quickly become a favorite that I will be re-reading!

DNF 57% the book is not bad but not good either it’s clear she has a favorite between the two boys i hate that in a MFM there shouldn’t be favorites. I honestly can’t get myself to care about any of these characters either 🤷🏻‍♀️ i’m not invested in the love story and i’m BORED.. But like i said not a bad book maybe i’ll pick it back up later on and try again.
