About this Experience a story driven Deep Dive VR MMO set in a fully realized fantasy world with levels, classes, spells, skills, loot, and monolithic monsters. Join Ben, a down-on-his-luck New Yorker, as he’s thrown into this brutal game world with no starting class, no advantages, and no easy way out. Enjoy memorable characters and rich world-building with a LitRPG progression system inspired by D&D and classic RPGs. Humor, action, and high-stakes adventure await in this weak-to-strong journey, where Ben slowly transforms from a powerless weakling into an unstoppable force of nature.
H.G. Chambers is a huge nerd. I mean, you should see this guy’s collection of Zelda, Star Wars, D&D, and Tolkien nonsense! He’s also written a few books, I’m told, though chances are they’re equally nerdy. So unless you’re fluent in Klingon and enjoy painfully drawn out conversations about obscure Elden Ring lore, maybe don’t ask what he’s into. Despite what should be a catastrophic social handicap, he’s managed to find an awesome wife and has two implausibly awesome kids (talk about beating the odds). H.G.C. lives out his pathetically nerdy life on Vancouver Island, Canada, where people are polite, and the geese are complete jerks. Seriously…don’t mess with the geese, they will end you.
What an action-packed book! I feel like I could be journeying right alongside Ben, Will and Zoe, though with some of the situations they find themselves in, I do not wish to be part of them! I thought the plot thicken a lot with this book and gave me just enough tidbits of information while leaving me wanting more. I have some theories about Zoe and I hope to know more about her in the next book. In all, another well written story. I can’t wait to get my hands on book three!
This is the second book in The Wylds Online series.
I voluntarily received and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Ben, Will and Zoe are still travelling together when they come across the mercenary soldier bully gang known as Fate. These are feared by every0ne, as they have been in game from the beginning and they are powerful and ruthless, and now they have set their eyes on our young and small team. Ben and his friends run for their lives, knowing that if Fate catches up with them they are dead. However as they do their best to escape Daedalus and his gang, they encounter much fiercer monsters, including a dragon who tries to eat them. Poor Ben is terrified, he really is not cut out to be a warrior, and often thinks he should just log out, however his loyalty to Will does not let him do this. But the game does no longer seem like a game to him, not when all their lives are now continually under threat, and as they try to find out why Fate are after them, what they discover is earthshaking for them. They seem to have in their possession something that could erase not only they Wylds but even their own homeworld. How can they keep this artifact from falling into the wrong hands, ie those of Fate? Onward to book 3 as this series is getting nail biting exciting!!
The part of the story in which Ben realizes we are not in Kansas anymore, Toto. OK, to be fair, Ben should have realized this is more than just the game is appears to be long before this with his, shall we say, less than standard trajectory through the initial stages of the game but now he is running into things that are forcing him to re-evaluate everything he thought he knew. Zoe is definitely hiding things and Will - well, he is the perfect paladin. Somehow saving the day while being happily clueless. Things just work out for him.
We get a better look at some things that were teased in book 1 and OMG so many more questions! Lots of action, quests that are not what they seem and did you see that dragon on the cover? Oh yeah, there is an awesome boss fight - but not at all the one you are expecting.
This book had less of the obvious gaming references with stats etc (though it is still there) and focused more on the plotline. That said, for gamers it was an absolute treasure trove of references, situations, and jokes. I really enjoyed the gaming humor plastered all over a seriously high stakes and getting grimmer by the second story.
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. The trainee wheels of is this already expansive series come off and things become white hot as Ben, Will and Zoe finds themselves the hunted targets and are forced to endure the seriously unimaginable that an online gaming world and its players can throw at them. From the sadistic guild group called Fate that the how deep the bonds of friendship the trio has- and who they can trust. as the guild's twisted leader wants something and doesn't care how it has to be retrieved. And that's just the beginning of worldwind of quests, epic crazy battles that stretches their abilities and even their emotions of a virtual world becoming more harrowing the more the trio sees and experiences. Their choices will affect whatever comes to them, even if they don't know how.
Virtual Reality is just the place where the impossible can be possible, no matter how outlandish. However, plotting to get you killed in Virtual Reality as well as in real life, is simply not on. That is the unpleasant truth Ben has to confront when discovering that the nasties going under the name Fate is trying exactly that. Why? Now, that is the question as Ben, Will and Zoe is trying to determine....all the while simply trying to survive to most fantastic locales with real incredible creatures in hair raising adventures. Wylds Online: Runescribe Book 2 by author HG Chambers is really a pulse raiser from start to finish. Enjoy.
Ben, Will and Zoe end up running afoul of the Fate guild and having to survive them and escape which lead to some interesting times and fun scenes. Then they end up on another quest that lead to a better battle. And then there were some other surprises and some interesting secrets revealed that has me thinking all is not as it seems in the game. A fun read, fun characters, interesting times and enjoyed it all.
Absolutely loved this story. A bit darker than the previous one but still fast moving. Ben, Will and Zoe are being chased by the guild Fate. There are new characters and more is revealed about the Wylds. Plus an intriguing suggestion of what might be happening in the real world. Cannot wait for book 3. Definitely recommend
These books are easy to read, even to a non-LITRPG person like myself, and I am finding them a good read. The story becomes more involved in this second book, but to a SciFi fanatic like myself, the links to, and queries about, the outside world become more and more interesting. I am fascinated to see what happens in the next book, as the real world element has me completely intrigued!
A great follow on to book 1. After escaping, then being pursued by a nasty group called Fate, Ben, Will and Zoe find themselves involved with creatures who offer them a dangerous quest in return for safe passage to Ardmore. The pages are filled with action, danger, humour and more. I loved it. Highly recommended. I received an ARC copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was a little surprised that our intrepid MC faced off against a dragon this early in the story.....but it worked pretty well writing the context of the story being told. The pacing continues to be pretty nice, and I'm still quite intrigued by the worldbuilding in the story. Looking forward to the next book!
I received an eARC review copy. Ben and friends continue their adventure through the WYLDS! The broader mystery of the world deepens as we get more info about what the heck is going on beyond the trappings of the world’s most advanced video game. There’s a vibe that’s somewhere between DCC and Cradle and I’m here for it. I like that Ben is a “good guy” type and I really like how his power level builds with the gear and his own growth as a character. The ending was epic!!!
Received as a ARC reader. Another fast read. The story picks up from the last book. You find out more info about the bag of holding, with what is inside the bag and it becomes an issue. I enjoyed the story snd looking forward to the next book.
Ben is to naive and not as smart as he should be the book would be better if he could quit trying to give all the things that would help him away! And tried to use them to his advantage!
Based on the mechanics in the game, the Beta-Chuck MC's two highest skills should have been cowaring in fear and soiling his pants. Also book one, "BCMC: you want me to carry your stuff in my bag of holding?" Book two, "Zoe: OMG! You have a bag of holding?!?"
