Spotlighting examples of classical Greek art in the context of findings in anthropology, social history, psychology, classics & classical archeology, Pandora offers a multifaceted look at women in myth, ritual & daily life in classical Greece. Written to accompany an international traveling exhibition organized by the Walters Art Gallery, this volume examines the imagery of classical Greek marbles, bronzes, terracottas & vases in order to understand how women were perceived & how they lived. Pandora offers a new emphasis on myths dealing with the unmarried maiden & the difficulty of the transition to marriage & motherhood--as exemplified in the stories of Danae, Thetis, Atalanta & Amymone. Also explored are images of containers & wild animals as metaphors for women; rituals involving women, such as the wedding & the cult of the Little Bears at Brauron; the character & cult of goddesses & the association of women with textiles.
Pandora mitine yönelik bütün bilgi birikimlerini ortaya koyduklari guzel bir eser. Sadece dipnotların çokluğu ve yoğunluğu okuma akışını aksattigindan yer yer kopukluk yasadim. Yine de anlayamadigim tam anlamiyla kitabı hazmedemedigimi hissettigim yerlerde tekrar dönüş yaparım ileride. Mitolojiye dair her çeşit okumaları sevdigim icin sorun etmiyorum ama dipnot fazlalığı birçok okuyucu için bıktırıcı olabilir. Anlatıyı resimler ve gravürlerle desteklemiş olmaları kitabın cazibesini artırmış ki ingilizce baskısının tıpkıbasımı olmuş. Keske kitap kapağı Pandora ve küpüne dair mitolojiye dayanan ünlü ressamların resimlerinden biri ile taçlandırılsaymış(:
Nope, never did 'finish' it per se, but Goodreads doesn't give an option for 'enjoyed it as far as I read but too big and heavy to read for pleasure so shelved to use as reference for ongoing writing projects and occasional interests.' It's excellent and enormously useful, but not what you'd call a light read in any sense of the word.
Panofsky doesn't seem intimidating in this book. At a glance it seems like an art history lecture with slides and likely a pleasant read. I added several quotes and info about the authors to the information section. If I'd been better about reading my books, even studying the covers, I'd have looked for Barry's painting on one of my two or three visits to the Manchester City Art Galleries....grrrr..
