Bridges are remarkable feats of engineering, whether natural or human-made. Though they do not always resemble one another in appearance, bridges do the important task of connecting one place to another, often spanning obstacles along the way. Cities around the world rely on bridges to accomplish all manner of tasks, but it is rare for classroom study to investigate these objects with great detail. Therefore, this book has been designed to dive deeply into the elements that make up bridges in order to enhance young readers’ understanding of these important structures. Printed on oversized pages, this nonfiction picture book stands out visually from many other books of its genre. A wealth of information is included throughout the book, investigating history, engineering, and global structures, taking readers on a journey through time and space to better understand the purpose of bridges to humanity. Visually, the book utilizes only a handful of colors, and though these are occasionally difficult to decipher because of their lightness, the book’s overall presentation is unique and memorable. Due to the depth and variety of information included, this book is not intended to be read in one sitting; instead, readers can focus on a certain area of interest with each sitting. The table of contents helps with navigation, and a list of bridges at the end supports learning and investigation outside of the text, as well. Detailed and packed with information, this nonfiction picture book is well suited to elementary school-aged readers interested in the function and construction of bridges.

This is one of the most beautifully illustrated non-fiction books I've come across recently. Bridges is an exploration through the history and design of bridges, from ancient stone arches to modern constructions. It's jammed packed with EVERYTHING you can know about bridges. It's such a beautiful collaboration that would be a perfect book for any fan of architecture or engineering.

The best thing about this book is its ability to make the complex world of engineering accessible and engaging for kids. I am a sucker for a well-designed book and it's such an aesthetically pleasing color palette and design that makes it so much more engaging for kids while they learn. My favorite part was the section on the Brooklyn Bridge because its comic book format made it a very enjoyable read.

The book also encourages creativity and critical thinking, inviting kids to try their hand at building their own bridges using everyday materials like spaghetti. It reminds me of my 8th grade years when my friend and I won the spaghetti bridge contest in one of my classes. I had completely forgotten about that so now I can't wait to try this challenge with my son after reading this book.

I think that Bridges is a great blend of education and inspiration and a must-have for any young learner interested in science and engineering or anyone looking to add a great STEM focused book to their home or school library.

Bridges of many types all over the world are carefully illustrated and explained.
Too bad they showed the lift bridge in Bordeaux, France but not the one in Duluth, MN, USA as it's my favorite next to the George Washington and the Brooklyn bridge (which has a 2 page spread!).
The illustrations by Jakub Bachorik are clear and explicit of each type and of bridge
Well suited for reading alone or WITH someone of any age, including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school, waiting room, or your local public library! Excellent in print copy! printed in English
I requested and received a temporary uncorrected digital Galley on Thorium PDF from Publisher Spotlight | Post Wave via NetGalley. I ordered mine new through #thriftbooks.

As a former Pittsburgh resident (aka “the city of bridges”) I was excited to pick up this whimsically illustrated children’s book all about bridges. The author and illustrator detail architecture of bridges, historical bridges, popular destination bridges, and even mentions other uses of the word “bridge”, such as the section between a chorus and verse in a song. This title also examines bridges that were the site of important events and historically significant figures in related industries. Readers will also learn all about key factors that influence bridge construction and enjoy a few interactive portions within the text. I was pleasantly surprised by how much digestible information this book contained and would consider this a highly giftable/suggestable read for a wide variety of ages. This book was a fun read and even managed to incorporate diversity and address environmental impacts. Link to complete review: https://ysbookreviews.wordpress.com/2...

Another absolutely amazing non-fiction reference book that we will need to purchase a physical copy of for our homeschool shelves! The illustrations are gorgeous- realistic but still clearly illustrations (just how we like it) and there's TONS of information, but presented in an easy to digest manner. My kids have really enjoyed looking through this one and we've learned a lot of interesting information about bridges that we truly never even thought about before. Definitely recommend if you have a budding engineer or just a family that enjoys a beautiful non-fiction for read aloud!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

Book is packed with lots and lots of interesting information. Some pages were hard to follow though given the timeline/river layout.
