The Other Detective #0

Frustrated Justice

Rate this book
An Urban Fantasy Story

Murder, magic, and a talking bird with an attitude—justice has never been this complicated!

When a body is found pulverised beyond recognition, I’m called to investigate. As Chester’s only magical Detective Inspector, it’s my job to handle the cases the Common police can’t. This one has all the hallmarks of the Other Realm—especially when I find a talking bird caged at the scene.

The avian is a cheeky, foul-mouthed creature with a knack for insults and an alarming amount of information about the murder. His claims are as dubious as his vocabulary, but he might just be the key to solving the case.

Things get even messier when Krieg, the King of Ogres, strides into the investigation. He’s imposing, infuriating, and entirely too distracting for my peace of mind. With magical factions on edge, a murderer on the loose, and a bird who won’t stop talking, I’ll need all my wits—and my rare magical gifts—to stay ahead of the chaos.

Justice might be my job, but staying alive—and keeping my heart intact—is personal.

Please note this book was previously published in the Magically Wild anthology. Immerse yourself in The Other Detective Series—perfect for fans of fast-paced, witty paranormal police procedurals, complete with a fierce heroine, gripping murder mysteries, and a slow-burn fated-mates romance.

This Novella appeared on my Patreon download list a while ago, but I was so backlogged that I'm only just getting to it. I am really excited about this series. I love all the books from the Other books, and after this prequel, I am really looking forward to digging into this one.

A fun little novella that introduces a whole new cast of characters in the Other Realms world. I just wish it had been a full length novel - or that the first in the “real” series published a bit sooner than next fall. Not sure I’ll remember this snipped by then.

This is a new-to-me author - I'm aware she has gazillion books out already in the "Other" Universe as seen from her profile here in Goodreads.

Although I was a bit weary at first - usually these kind of series are interconnected despite the author always convinced potential readers that each series are stand alone - I found that it was quite easy to follow. Yes, the introduction to the world was minimum, but it wasn't that different than other urban fantasy anyway.

Since this is only a prequel and quite short, the story is quite straightforward and quickly solved. Although I do wonder about the appearance of the King of Ogre I think it will be more explored in the first novel coming in September. I think I'll check that one out.

I read this prequel after I had read the first two full books in the series. Though I had managed to read, enjoy and understand all in those two books, this prequel filled in some important information – namely how Stacy first meets Krieg, the Ogre King, what happened to Ash Aspen and Jude Jingo, and why Stacy exhibits such antipathy towards the latter (apart from his criminal reputation).
As always, the writing is superbly witty, the characters engaging and the crime solving aspect full of the requisite misdirection and interesting twists. This series would make a great real-word police procedural series, but the supernatural aspects – with the addition of the Dryads, Ogres and the Connection (Other police force) – make it something special.
Only two months to go till the next instalment is published!
Highly recommended.

Love jumping back into the Other Realm! This is a brilliant installment in the series, following Stacey the Connection Inspector.

For a short book (prequel for the new series) it sure reads like a full length one! We have action, murder, the introduction of a fascinating and foul-mouthed pet sidekick, the introduction of a very different and fascinating love interest, and mention of the other characters from the Other Realm!

Let me just say, this is lining up to be the best of the Other so far! I highly recommend! You don't want to miss out on this new series!

I'm so excited for this new series is a total understatement. The kick off was a thrill of note and being back in The Other Realm an absolute kicker. Stacey is such a bad ass with morals ingrained and a peeve hate for paperwork, but don't push her. Bird, the caladrius, and Krieg an added bonus to wet the appetite. I can't wait to see where Heather is going to take us with Stacy and Bird aka now Loki whereas she's still pigdog, along with the Ogre King and don't forget the pesky doppelganger.
I received an advanced review copy and leave this review voluntary Thank you Heather

Another book by Heather that takes place in her amazing world of The Other.
First there was Jinx and Emory, next was Lucy and Manners. I adored Amber and Bastian.
I am honestly so excited to read more about Stacy.

Heather has never disappointed when delivering a kick ass FMC, and her style of writing is brilliant.

If you haven't already, read her other books - Starting with Glimmer of the Other. Then Lucy's books. Then the Court series. Then Amber. And now Stacy.

I am probably going to do a full reread if the series when the next book comes out, which will make it like.. my 6th or so reread. Totally worth it.

I love love love Heather’s Other Realm books and spin offs. This one is the start of Stacey’s story, and I just adore strong well-written females.

We get glimpses of some familiar faces in this, so you might be lost if you don’t read the other books first (at least Jinx’s series).

There’s a good mystery to solve and things I didn’t see coming and the end! Whew (mind blown!). This sets us up nicely for the rest of the series and I CAN’T WAIT to dive in.

Did I mention there’s a smart-aleck familiar? He’ll either be annoying or great comedic relief. Or both.

I loved this intro into lives only briefly touched on in previous books. I’m super excited to see more of pigdog and Loki! I’m already looking forward to the next book! Kreig is someone I’m super interested in learning about and more about this level five power.

This. Was. Short.

Talk about a teaser!
I was not prepared for it to be so short, and yet it contained murder and mayhem.
I need another fix of The Other mysteries.

This is the prequel for Stacey’s series. I’m assuming you’ve read Heather’s Other lolz) other series so Stacey the Connection/common cop has popped up a few times and now she gets her own books.
Loving the set up, and who do we also see?….. the Ogre King (hmmmmm, love interest???) Plus there’s a talking bird - awesome right?
Bring on book one.
Heather G Harris brings one of my favourite book worlds to life in each series she writes. I love there’s a new FMC, who we’ve meet before to continue this world I love to delve into.

An opening line that immediately got me chortling is a fab way to start a read and guess what? Yes...it just got better! I flew through this novella, no guilded cage could have prevented me from guzzling it down, certainly not my husband calling for breakfast, it was THAT good! And it has Stacy...and Krieg...and Loki...

As a cop working for the Connection as well, Stacy has her fair share of strange mysteries to solve. This particular one, a murder of a known scumbag, Jingo, was far from cut and dry, appearances can be deceptive, even the dead have secrets! A loner on cases, Stacy has been saddled with a rookie cop, who actually is sweet, I could feel his adoration of Stacy as he stumbles over his own feet to prove worthy. This author is exceptional in throwing red herrings, mudding the waters so much even fish swiming in them wouldn't be able to see. What else is muddingly concealed is WHY Krieg is assisting Stacy... Krieg being the fierce and deadly king of the Ogres, a secretive species at the best of times. But we get to see a gentler side of Krieg, one that had both Stacy and I questioning our sanity...he was so NICE! He was so supportive but motive wise, heck, I'm as stumped as Stacy! This side of Krieg is rather hot, I was tugging at my collar... just saying... the spark between Stacy and Krieg was like an ember, ready to blaze at a whiff of wind.

Oh my word do I love Stacy, as I do all of this incredible author's leading ladies, fierce, feisty, strong, vulnerable, all together gives "full" characters and darn if I don't want to be friends with all of them! I adore the comedic exchanges, another trademark of Ms Harris, she'll get me giggling like a pre-teen throughout any of her books. Then there's a snarky bird, I swear he could give Esme a run for her money!

As always with a Heather read, all isn't as it seems yet all is exactly as it seems. Her ability to pull the wool over my eyes is superbly thought out, the plot intriguing in it's mysterious substance, both dramatic and romantic undertones delight me no end! A fast paced and quick read, ALL the elements of a superb rendition of another Other Realm read. Mystery, murder, mayhem, an awesome bird and the promise of more great things to come, heck, who can blame me for finishing the book before breakfast?

**ARC Reader, all opinions are my own!**

Inspector Stacy Wise is a detective inspector with the Cheshire Constabulary, the police force entrusted with the safety, security, and law enforcement of the ceremonial county of Cheshire in the northwest of England. She works hard, is functionally married to her job, and worries her mother constantly as she does her duty to protect the law-abiding citizens of Cheshire County.

Detective Inspector Wise has a secret, however. She is not just a DI for the Cheshire Constabulary, she is also a crossover DI for the Connection, in fact she’s the only one for several counties, meaning that were crimes are committed within the Other, she is literally the only one to call, and call they do. Worked a full shift already? That’s nice. Seeing double from the murder cases you’re actively working on? So what? If it’s Other-related, there’s no other DI to solve the case.

When a a body is found dead from a rather effective bit of pummeling, Stacy is called in because the victim is a Dryad. While at first blush it seems that the assailant is of the Ogrish persuasion, the Common cops can’t be allowed to find that out. If it’s Other, the case is hers. Immediately. So what if her co-workers think she’s a MI-6 operative? So what if all the secrecy does very little to endear her to her fellow inspectors? If it’s Other, the Connection calls the shots, and Stacy’s on the case. And who knows? Maybe a little birdy might tell her a little something useful.

Originally published as part of the Urban Fantasy mega-anthology “Magically Wild”, “Frustrated Justice” is the prequel novella that brings the reader in to the streets of Cheshire County to get to know everyone’s favorite kickass crossover badass, Stacy Wise. A fan-favorite from her supporting character roles in several of The Other Realm series by Heather G. Harris, Stacy now takes the stage in a long-awaited and fully deserved series of her own, “The Other Detective Series”. With appearances by characters well-known and yet still mysterious to fans of The Other Realm series this prequel definitely has me excited for the coming books! 10/10, an absolutely MUST READ! Enjoy!

I received a free copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Another AMAZING Read from HGH!!!

Note to Potential Readers…. If this is your first of Heather G Harris’ Other Realm books, you will be missing a lot of background about this world. It may be confusing, but there’s enough information to make it a good read.

I wasn’t going to read this prequel. I was going to wait until at least Book #1 was released and then read both. I love binge reading and hate to wait!!

But….. I read this, thinking how good could it be anyway? She (the author) HAS to be running out of crazy awesome creative adventures in the Other Realm. The Connection is dumb (I thought) this story will be dumb (I thought) This will be dull (I thought). So way I won’t have to wait impatiently for this series (I thought).

WRONG! I was dead wrong! This prequel is AWESOME!
The main character is interesting and likable, the bad guys are believable and horrible and will deserve what they eventually get.
Bird/Loki is rude hilarious annoying but vulnerable enough to be lovable. His character already has a lot of depth, which is impressive in a short-ish story.
The obvious slow-burn with the Ogre King is definitely going to be interesting! In other books he’s a jerk but interesting. I love his connection to crows and I’ve been wanting to know more about him.

So, yeah this is another Awesome start to another awesome adventure in HGH’s Other Realm. Highly recommend. 10 stars. 😃

What better way to start the new year than with a new Heather G Harris series?!🙌🏼

After glimmers of Stacey and King Krieg in the previous Other Realm stories, Inspector Wise is finally here and a new mystery is about to be solved (with a fantastic love story to boot!)

The perfect novella to get you excited for what’s to come, Frustrated Justice starts with our pessimistic-go lucky Inspector, Stacy Wise, on a new case solving the gruesome murder of a not-so-friendly neighbourhood crime lord. One rookie partner, one talking bird later, and one dastardly handsome and broody ogre King later, Stacey is about to head into, what I’m guessing will be, a wild ride filled with tension, sarcastic banter, and a whole lot of murder! I devoured this novella, so bring on the next three books!!👏🏼

Thank you Heather for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. There’s nothing quite like being back home in the Other Realm!🫶🏼

I tend to have mixed feelings about reading prequels to new series before I read Book 1 - it seems to be a rare author who can make me care about the characters in a short story or novella before I get to know them in more depth in their full-length Book 1 (and occasionally, I decide I don't want to read Book 1 based on the prequel)

However, Ms Harris IS one of those rare authors, and I really, really enjoyed this short prequel - perhaps because I've already met both Stacey and Krieg in previous Other books. From memory, I think, it was in Amber's series. It's also interesting starting the prequel knowing more about the protagonists than they know themselves - something I generally don't enjoy, but which worked in this situation.

Perhaps because the A plot thread of this story revolves around a mystery - or at least a crime - this felt more like a Jinx book than a Lucy or an Amber one, and I found myself really enjoying that. And with so much of the later Jinx books revolving around the politics of Emory's position, it feels like a bit of a return to the earlier Other books, which again, I enjoyed.

All of which is to say that for such a short story, this packed quite a punch, and I can't wait to dive into Book 1 when it comes out later this year.

DI Stacy Wise is called in to investigate a murder, shocked to find that the victim is a notorious criminal they've been after for a long time. But all is not as it seems, and the "eye for an eye" law from the Other realm makes Stacy's life even more difficult. The only witness is a talking bird, with a foul mouth and a tendency to skirt around the full story. To complicate matters further, Krieg, High King of the Ogres, appears to have taken an interest in the case - and Stacy herself. What exactly has Stacy found heraelf immersed in?

It's no secret that I adore Heather G Harris' writing, so diving back into her "Other realm" after some time away felt like coming home. Frustrated Justice was the perfect length to re-establish understanding on how IR works, how the Connection (magical law enforcement) operate, and to get an idea of Stacy's character, with this being her first starring appearance. She's fierce, indomitable, but hiding some.secrets, a surefire recipe for drama to come! Krieg's.motives for being on the fringe of the case are not yet clear, but he knows a lot about Stacy - including her favourite drink. I'm excited to see how the dynamic between them develops. The seeds have been laid for an exciting story arc, and I'm here for it!

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this series and this is a delightful taste of what’s to come.

Rating: 4⭐️

The is the prequel to the new urban fantasy series that takes place in Heather G. Harris’ Other World universe. We’ve seen its beginnings in The Other Witch series when the Ogre King meets with the witch Crone Amber DeLea and circumstances from that meeting leads here.

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this series and this is a delightful taste of what’s to come. It introduces the character and situations of the series.

It definitely helps to have a firm knowledge of the overall universe and magical world that this series is slotted into as other events and characters from crossover series will feature prominently, I’m sure.

The smutty talking dove is a great new character, especially as I think it will lead into a deeper dive into the mythology and magical world.

Another winner.

*I got an arc*

It's Stacy's turn in the hot seat! In Frustrated Justice, Stacy is, as the title suggests, frustrated. There's a dead body that looks like the crime was perpetrated by ogres... but Krieg (the Ogre King) says it wasn't him. There is something bigger happening here... and why on Earth is Krieg so insistent on helping her?

This was a pretty fun novella! I'm glad Stacy is getting her time to shine. If you're not sure what Krieg is up to, make sure to (re)read Amber's books! Plus, I can tell Loki is going to be a fan favourite character!

My only negatives are the use of the term 'spook' (as it is a slur for Black people in the US-- not that Heather would know that) and Stacy musing that "unlike the Common police force, the Connection actively encouraged forceful behaviour in dangerous situations" (given the general history of policing and the police brutality that goes constantly unpunished-- again more of a US issue but not *just* a US issue). Heather is however very receptive to feedback-- I'm just a bit late in reading this one.

Wonderful Prequel ❤️❤️❤️
This is a prequel to the "Other Detective Series - Books: Veiled Justice and Mystic Justice (only 2 books has been published so far). It is not necessary to read it, but it will give you more insight into the FMC Stacy. Stacy Wise is a sharp, smart, no-nonsense inspector for the supernatural world that acts all tough in her job, but underneath you can see she really cares for justice for her victims and especially for her family. I love a fierce FMC that is sharp and yet vulnerable at times, which is exactly who Stacy is. I laughed at her interactions with her new “pet” Loki and cannot wait to see what happens with the Ogre King who is showing a romantic interest in her. The case gets solved by the end of this book. This is just a small taste of what is to come in book one and two. The first two books are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, intriguing and I just can't get enough of this new series!!!! Highly Recommended 😍

As always, from Heather G. Harris, a fantastic prequel novella for the next visit to the Other realm. This prequel stars Stacey, a detective who also works for the “Connection” in the Other realm. She jumps right in with trying to solve the murder of John Doe. In the meantime she’s training a new partner when previously she worked alone. This new murder now has her saddled with a foul mouth bird who shows evidence of magical powers of some sort and she’s unable to turn him over to the animal control. That would probably be enough on her plate but to add into her already uncomfortable level, an ogre named Krieg who happens to be the king has decided she needs his help to solve this mystery. What a thrilling read. I could not put this down!! This one definitely stimulated all of the senses; mystery, magic, mythical characters, family and maybe a little romance a brewing?

Frustrated justice is a great introduction into this new series. I loved how Stacy's personality and voice shines through, some of our inner thoughts had me howling.

I first read this amazing story as part of the magically wild anthology which was a fantastic read with this being one of the stand out stories.

I was excited to hear Heather was making this a series within The Other realm umbrella?! Always in need of more kick ass characters, and am happy for my books to flesh out this world further. I will never get enough of this series.

Having a reread of this (now) prequel to the other detective series has really got me thirsty for more and I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes and how it fits into existing world. I wonder who will be making cameos? As always an amazing read from Heather

New Series!!

This is the start of a new series set in Heather's The Other world. It's a fantastic novella to set up what promises to be a fast pace, slow burn comedy of mystery.
Our FMC is a Detective, but not just a normal one. She also is a rare type of witch. She gets called out to a murder scene which promises to be a big one, as it's the leader of a powerful local gang. Investigation ensues and the High King of the ogres helps her out. But why? You get hints and if you've read the other books, you know. Or do you?
There are a couple plot twists which are really good and some looks into our heroines family which is fantastic. Plus! We get a fabulous new little sidekick in the form of a bird with all the snark and sass.
This promises to be a welcome and fantastic new series. Highly recommended.

This prequel introduces a certain mouthy magical bird and a few other characters. It gives gives a taste of this world and it's a short read. It’s quick, snappy, and very much about setting the stage rather than telling a full, sprawling story.

I flew straight into this after finishing the first book because I needed more of this world immediately. Getting to meet Loki properly was such a treat and I loved seeing how he first comes into the story. It was also really fun getting extra context for some side characters and dynamics that show up later.

It’s short and sweet, but it does exactly what a prequel should do: deepen the world, add emotional texture, and make you more attached to the characters. If you’re already invested in the series, this is such a satisfying little bonus and if you're debating starting the series, this is a good starting point before diving in.

I first read this last year in an anthology of multiple Urban Fantasy Authors but it is a delight to read it again as I already have book 1 on pre-order.

Stacey has appeared a few times in Heathers growing Other Realm especially when the other main characters are near Stacys work area of Chester. While investigating a murder Stacy finds the only witness is a white dove like bird with not just an attitude problem but also a very extensive vocabulary and scared of the dark. I’m in love with the flying fouled mouth critter already, even more so because when Stacy gives Bird a new name it’s definitely the best one it could have, you’ll just have to read the book to find out.

What a way to start off the new year and a new series by the wonderful Heather G Harris!

Stacy Wise is a Connection detective, who has appeared in previous Other Universe series. This book is a prequel to a new series about Stacy and I’m delighted that she now gets her moment to shine.

Heather G Harris is an author that delivers strong MFCs, with lots of grit, determination, loyalty and their own unique sense of right and wrong - Stacy Wise is no exception. The storyline has a complex plot to keep you guessing, snark and humour, a starring role from Krieg, King of the Ogres and a feathered sidekick. What more could you possibly want? Well the answer to that is, (in the words of Oliver Twist) more, please! I can’t wait for book one in this series and the sense of anticipation is every bit as strong as it is for every book written by this author.

Absolutely perfect introduction to a new series set in one of my favorite worlds! Full of action, mystery, a badass FMC, and a slow burn romance.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stacy is a smart and capable detective with a rare power. Bird Loki is a hilariously rude sidekick. Krieg is a hot ogre king who can talk to animals and mysteriously wants to help for some reason ;)

I'm already in love with these characters, and can't wait to find out what they do next.

📚 This is a new series set in an existing world - if you want to start at the very beginning, start with The Other Realm Series featuring Jinx

✔️ Easy to read
✔️ Entertaining
✔️ Great world building
✔️ Page-turner
✔️ Wonderful characters

Another wonderful Other Realm series in the making!!!!!

Stacy Wise was first introduced in The Other Witch series and then popped up to lend Lucy a helping hand in the Other Wolf series. I am so glad to see her get her own story.

Stacy Wise, a kick-butt and take names kind of girl, works for the Connection. She is called to investigate an Other realm death- a body that was demolished beyond recognition. During her investigation she gains a couple sidekicks-a talking bird and an ogre King. Join her and her entourage as they determine what happened to the body. But pay attention! There are a few twists and turns along the way.

Heather G Harris definitely knows how to write the best reads.
