Sree Kaano doesn’t want to be an assassin. Except that his species, the Re’Ris, were genetically designed to be just that. Even worse, his family members are famous for it.
The Makers on his world determine who is important and who must become a target. If you aren’t one, then you are the other.
On a world where prestige and power depend on how many assassinations you fulfill, how can Sree stand up against society and not be targeted himself?
The Makers took me to a place I'm not used to - where killing is smiled upon and aversion to it is punished. It's an interesting twist on what I've been taught, but Yelich-Koth makes it work. This book turns much of what we believe as a species on its head, while putting forth the idea that simply because a society deems it so, doesn't necessarily make it the right choice for everyone.
Our protagonist, 16-yr. old Sree, finds himself in an untenable position - he has come of age, which, on his planet, means he is expected to become an assassin and eliminate those now deemed useless to their society. His biggest problem is that, although his family is famous for their kill rates, he does not want to follow in their footsteps - at all!
So begins an adventure in which one boy dares to go against an entire way of life. He meets others who share his distaste for such a bloodthirsty destiny while making friends with some who embrace the notion that killing is necessary to keep their society running smoothly, and utilize those beliefs to help Sree find an answer to the question: Is this really what we were meant for?
I thoroughly enjoyed watching such an ethical dilemma play out on a world where kill rates are not only something to aspire to, but lauded, while one voice questions the value of his entire planet's belief system. Full of tension, interesting weapons with various ranges of lethality, plenty of deaths by mistake or otherwise, and relatable characters - for both the young adult mystery and adventure fans, there is something here to satisfy all of you. I can't wait to see what unfolds after this book's story - there has to be another book coming!
