Garrett Benteen uses his wealth and his forceful personality to become the benign dictator of his Vermont village, where his friends and neighbors chafe under the yoke of his vision of what the hamlet is and must be.
I left my first copy of this on a train, but finally got another copy (an ex-library book from Massachussets) and it was worth the wait. It's his first novel, but I found it more accomplished and more satisfying than his latest, the rather flat and lifeless The Devil In The Valley.
