Closer, I wanna know ya, you'll be my soldier / You wanna try, wanna try, wanna try, wanna try / Lights out, we gotta slow down, you wanna know how / We come alive, come alive, come alive, come alive (Diggy Down – INNA).

According to the headline of an article that I just scrolled passed two minutes ago, the very popular video game Marvel Rivals has lost a good portion of its player base only a year into the game’s life, so you know what that means… it’s finally counter-culture enough to where I can talk about it! Okay, I’m not being serious here, because I think I’ve already talked about this game quite a bit, like how I’m bad at it, or how I don’t buy any of the cosmetics to make the characters look cooler so I’m the only one walking around with the busted ass default outfits, or even how I never really liked the game that much in the first place and any interest from my end was mostly just posturing because it was the current thing to talk about. For real though, I think the biggest reason why I never got into the whole Marvel Rivals scene (fad is more like it) is because it’s one of those “free-to-play” games, and while a game that doesn’t cost anything sounds nice on the tin, when you actually play the damn thing you quickly realize that because you’re locked out of so many cool things unless you drop some fat stacks on cosmetics, then the game isn’t actually all that free after all. It’s one of those games that really taps the FOMO part of your brain with how aggressively they try to entice you with shiny things. I mean, that’s how they all are, but it really hit me this time around because even with looking at this comic’s front page, I can see that there’s a little pop-up box on the side telling me that there’s a “bonus in-game spray,” so the entire property, from Marvel Rivals itself to its tie-in comics just feels like giant advertisement. It makes me ask myself why am I even reviewing this? At this point I should go write a review for the back of a cereal box! Like, look out for my Honey Bunches of Oates review coming up! I guess the fact that this is all an advertisement is pretty obvious to the enlightened mind because that’s pretty much what the comic industry has always been about, but I really do feel like I’ve had an epiphany today as if I happened upon a double rainbow, so you know, please just let me have this one. I think one of the reasons why this game never really stuck with me the way it did for thousands of players is just the fact that I hate the art style. All the female superheroes are drawn in the same Anime girl style, and outside of twinks like Spider-Man, twunks and Iron Fist, and sharks like Jeff the Landshark, all the dudes are built like Crash Bandicoot. Upside down Dorito looking ass, it’s really not a good look! They can’t entice me with shiny outfits that cost twenty dollars because everything in the game looks like ass. It also doesn’t help that the sound department of the game decided it was a good idea to have every character yell at the top of their lungs whenever they do literally anything, with everybody doing their overexaggerated voices like they’re all auditioning to work at Funimation. So unless you’re fine with a constant stream of noise complaints, it's best play this one on mute.

So yeah, I’ve never really liked this game too much, and it’s funny because when it came out late last year, my friend would come over, like, three times a week so we could take turns playing the game. Fun right? Well, let me tell you, I would always dread whenever he’d hand me the controller because it’s just not a very fun game. I'd be in a game standing there for several minutes where I'd get to the point of almost taking an enemy out only for them to get healed to full health a second later. All while I have to run around the map to find health packs because my healers never heard of a thing called peripheral vision and turn a few inches to the right to heal me! Sorry, I know this sounds like complete nonsense to anyone who hasn’t played Marvel Rivals, but I can’t vent these frustrations anywhere else, so I’ve got to let it all out here! Now, I know what you’re thinking, why did I even read this comic if it’s based off a game I don’t even like? Well, I’m what you could consider a weirdly loyal Marvel fanboy! And the thing is, I’m always a lot more lenient towards their stuff, even when it’s not very good. It’s a problem, and I know that, it’s just that outside of the MCU, I always go back to the Marvel superheroes. I watched the 2025 Superman (in theaters no less), and while I really liked it (except for that weird nano tech lady), one thing that kept me from loving it was that odd bit at the end (spoilers) where Superman is looking at old family pictures of his real parents, Ma and Pa Kent, but he’s doing it alone in a sterile liminal space room while he’s strapped to what can only be described as a dentist’s chair. Seriously, it ruined the whole moment for me because it’s like… does he not own a photo album? Go home and look at pictures with your family dude. Maybe that’s a James Gunn issue rather than a DC one, but you know, it’s one of those things that I narrow in on while I probably wouldn’t do the same with Marvel stuff. I’m a fanboy shill! You can throw out names like Moon Knight or Ghost Rider and I’d get excited in a way that I wouldn’t with DC characters… Green Arrow and The Flash? No thanks. Which is a little funny as my clear bias makes scrolling my Tumblr feed hazardous because all my mutuals over there love DC above all else. Like, I have to guard my proclivity towards Marvel stuff more closely than my sexuality! Anyway, where was I going with this? Oh yeah. It’s important for you to know how lenient I am for Marvel so you understand how mid Marvel Rivals has to be for me to be this ambivalent towards it.

But wait, I haven’t even talked about this specific tie-in comic, oops. And just because something’s source material isn’t to one’s liking doesn’t mean that a spin-off couldn’t branch off into its own cool thing! Well, that’s true Mr. Straw-Man, but the thing is, I didn't think this comic was much of anything, really. Darn. While the art style is a faithful recreation of the game's art (which is a good thing if you like the game’s style), the story itself is as hectic and confusing as any Marvel Rival match could ever be, which is to say that it’s just a constant stream of things happening at a break-neck pace. But since this comic isn’t a multiplayer video game where you’re supposed to turn your brain off for a couple minutes at a time, I had to actually focus on things like the narrative and the dialogue… and that’s when I realized that I had no idea what was going on at any point. I guess the story is that this is another one of those weak ass multiverse stories where everybody from a bunch of different time periods come together (right now, over me) to fight each other in some kind of Apex Legends time tournament or something. But then that begs the question, why would this Galacta lady need to compile a group of all these superheroes together from different pockets of time when they all exist in the same time period anyway!? Like, just open a portal to, 2007 or whatever year for the last couple decades and you’d find most of these clowns in abundance! Then it was hard to understand who was on who’s team and why. There’s Spider-Man’s team who has Doctor Strange and others and he’s against Captain American and Jeff the Landshark, but because they’re all heroes and super chummy with each other to the point where there's no animosity between them, it didn’t feel like there were any stakes or gravity to the story. Again, I understand that this comic is a tie-in comic to a game that also has a dumb story that most players couldn’t give less of a shit about, but I truly believe that while context is always important, a story should still be able to stand on its own. It being attached to another story isn’t a good excuse for a half-assed story. I love Mass Effect, but I couldn’t get through the extra material novels due to the fact that you can’t read them without having a deep understanding of the Mass Effect lore, and hey, that’s a bad thing, actually. Let’s see, what else? Oh yeah, this comic also has a MCU dialogue issue, where every character is vying for the top spot on who can be the most quippy. It's not an issue with Spider-Man, because that’s who he is, but when everybody talks like this, the dialogue can often be irritating rather than fun and funny. You can’t have a whole classroom of class clowns! Which I guess is the best way to describe Marvel Rivals; hectic chaos. So yeah, if you'd like to read a comic and not understand anything that's going on and otherwise have a bad time, then this is the one for you!

“Here in Tokyo 2099, the Web of Life and Destiny was damaged by The Rift, leaving the Master Weaver and his apprentice, Spider-Zero, fighting over how to fix it!”

Oo~ooh okay, that’s what the story was. Really clears things up!

Jako doplněk ke hře ok, ale jinak je to tak hnusně nakreslené, že se to blíží hodně blízko Rossově patlaninám. Přiíěh tam není. Prostě kekel.

Years ago if you told me that Spidey would be the focus of so many parallel universes (PU) I would have laughed at you...ever hear of a character called Dr. Strange...he would be my choice for someone who would be a 'linchpin' in that regard. Not sure how Spidey became the focus of all these PU...so I just went with it.

Great explanations for what is going on in the game. Would love to see if different versions of every character are gonna each side or if they are going the overwatch route and splitting the roster in half. Interested to see where it goes but definitely would’ve liked to see more from Galacta maybe explaining why characters are on what side but nevertheless I’m here for the ride

Written for people with zero patience. It’s just stuff happening, zero character, zero depth. The artwork is fine, but though reminiscent of the style in the games, it’s a watered down version. While it does give some narrative for why certain maps are taking place, you can get a lot more from the game itself, whether by reading the stories, or by simply listening to the dialogue as you play and the writing is so much better there than it is here.

As a quick read, I guess it’s fine, but I am evidently not the right audience for this series.

The art style of this comic is very good but the story feels like it's all over the place. It's basically one fight in a location and then another fight in another location, with an overarching plotline that takes a back seat.

Having not played the game I don't know what I expected but this first volume left me feeling underwhelmed.

I do still love Jeff though and his interaction with Namor at the end is precious.

I absolutely love Marvel Rivals so I'm glad this exists.

It's cool that they show where the Captain America & Thor and the Peni & Venom team up came from.

4 tanks in a single comp is crazy.
