The abundance of the sea was and is such a crucial part of indigenous life on the Northwest Coast that it is fascinating to read about the technology involved in catching, preparing, preserving, and feasting on these key foodstuffs. Think of yourself on a cobble beach, looking out to sea with the forest to your back. Then imagine how, using only natural materials immediately at hand, you would become a world-class fisher or chef and feed your family and your village. Hilary Stewart’s excellent drawings and photos, her insider’s insights and clear text, and her respect for the spiritual aspects of indigenous fishing, can’t be beat for giving you a clear portrayal of life on the west coast.

The best book on the topic. A beautiful blend of anthropology and archeology situated in the context of modern indigenous communities. Nary a wasted page.
