In Flight

Rate this book
Flying from Savannah to Boston every weekend for two months to help my sister with her upcoming wedding would be fine if it weren't for the obnoxious airplane guy. He has a job in Savannah for a few months and flies home to Boston every weekend, so he's always on my flights.

Even that might be tolerable if he didn't always choose the seat right beside me. But he won't move, and neither will I. So now we're stuck. Side by side for flight after flight.

After flight.

So what if he's kind of attractive? And softer than he pretends? His life is in Boston, and mine is not. His career is his priority, and the happy, secure world I've worked hard to build for myself in Savannah is mine.

So he's still the obnoxious airplane guy to me, and no matter how often our paths might cross, that's all he can ever be.

*3.5* The first half of this book was a bit of a struggle for me, it felt like there was too much antagonistic energy between the two of them, but once it settled, the overall story felt so genuine.

I really love the way Noelle Adams/Claire Kent writes relationships. She has this talent for making them feel messy, real, and lived-in.

I was fully invested in their journey from “obnoxious airplane guy” to a really heartfelt romance.

Tropes/themes:
Contemporary romance
Kinda enemies to lovers
Forced proximity
Grumpy/sunshine
Slow burn with authentic relationship growth
HEA

This story is not flashy or overly dramatic, it is heartfelt and believable.

The premise of this book is so cute but it fell a little flat for me

River and Isaac sit next to each other on commuter flights back and forth from Savannah and Boston for a few months and get to know each other. They are opposites, Issac a strait laced, finance guy and River an artist who leads with her heart, so it had all the makings of an interesting novella but it just didn’t hit with me.
The first part of the build up with them was cute but they kept putting up barriers to why they couldn’t pursue anything which didn’t work for the length of this novel.
Then when they did get together they jumped right into bed, exacerbating my issue with not feeling a connection between them. Lots of tell and no show about their feelings and the lack of Issac’s pov made it hard to like him. I know this author never gives us the MMC’s pov but I really felt the lack here.
And then the third act break up, in such a short novel for no good reason other than negative motivation, did me in. I stopped liking this even though it had such potential. The last half dropped off and ended up just annoying me. This would have worked better as a slow burn with no sex until perhaps the very end. Because as it was I didn’t get why they liked each other and why she ended things other than because she liked him too much. Like why? I need more connection, perhaps an ongoing text message exchange between them or a deeper friendship while they were seeing other people. This just ended up being a sex based relationship on page, except we are told they mean so much to each other but I frankly didn’t really see it.

Thanks to the author for the advanced copy, my opinions are my own.

I’ve heard good things about this author, so I was very excited about this arc, especially since the premise caught my interest. Oh well.

We all know that enemies-to-lovers and grumpy-sunshine are some of the best tropes. When done well.
Unfortunately, a forced conflict, paired with a rude and condescending hero (not the same as grumpy, btw), is not that.

I disliked Isaac from the beginning, and he only got worse as the story progressed. River was a little better, but she lost me when she started falling for him and his attitude.

I didn’t understand why they hated each other, and I didn’t understand why they stopped. There was very little chemistry, and it was not backed up by anything; they had nothing in common and didn’t even really know each other when they decided they wanted each other forever.

The only good thing about this book was that it was short.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Thanks Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the arc.

This was a quick and enjoyable read with a charming premise. I was excited to jump into it and loved watching River and Isaac repeatedly cross paths on their flights between Savannah and Boston. Their banter was just as entertaining as the quieter moments, which offered plenty of introspection from River’s perspective. While we don’t get the hero’s point of view—something this author usually conveys well without directly including it—I felt its absence more in this shorter book. Still, I found the story engaging and a great way to pass a few hours.

This book has a fun premise: two people find themselves sitting next to each other on roundtrip flights each weekend, and for Romance Reasons they always sit in the same seats so they get to know each other. Even though they are quite different, they both feel a strong connection, and look forward to their friday and sunday interactions. Eventually they both break up with their current (unsatisfactory) situationships and start dating, or to be more accurate, spending Quality Time together after their flights.

There's a ticking clock in that River is flying Savannah-Boston to help with her sister's wedding prep in a couple months, and Isaac is going the other way home for the weekends from temporarily assignment in Savannah. As their friendship builds, the reader sees the connection, and they both feel it. Their first time is amazing for them both, they say Best Ever, they say Never Felt Like This With Another.

I could have definitely used a little more show and a little less tell at this point. Noelle Adams writes gentle, low-key romances. The characters usually are in their heads a little bit about the other's thoughts, and often don't communicate for fear of wanting too much. Here she's really leaned into that, characters decide to take it VERY slow, and we are told that its been weeks of post-flight times, and the emotional intimacy and communication hasn't deepened (for some reason that didn't make a lot of sense they don't see each other during the week when they are in the same city). Neither of them, and this is months in at this point, take even the slightest risk to deepen communication, or discuss what will happen when the ticking clock goes off. At some point these characters who are deep in their own heads (we only get River's POV) will have to just peek at the other's psyche, the reader is impatient with them, and frankly they deserve the misery of their third act (short) breakup, because it all could have been easily avoided.

3.5 stars. Could have been 3? IDK. Not my favorite Noelle Adams.

It started promisingly. I immediately liked both main characters and the plot worked. However, I found myself wanting more dialogue, more banter - more moments where the characters truly talk to each other, rather than merely thinking about one another (and we've got only one pov). Once the story reached the first sexual encounter, it felt as though the emotional development had taken a back seat. The balance shifts toward physicality without sufficient depth to support it, and the connection that initially seemed engaging begins to lose its intensity. As a result, I gradually lost interest in the story.

Overall, it’s an easy read with charming leads and a strong start, but it loses momentum in the second half and ultimately feels bland by the end.

Noelle Adams always manages to pack a fully formed story into her novellas and In Flight was no different! I think what works the most for me in Adams’ books is that these are regular people and under normal circumstances, they might not have fallen in love. And, often, neither character is perfect or even particularly “likeable”. But just because it’s more realistic than other romance novels (no quirky jobs or crazy aspirations or wild plot points), doesn’t make it any less swoony and believable. Strangers meeting on a series of flights between Boston and Savannah over the course of several months gives so much close proximity goodness and ample time for tension to build between them.

River and Isaac don’t have a lot in common and they don’t really like each other from the jump. (Though this is more annoyance to love which is fine by me because enemies to lovers isn’t my jam.). It’s a lot of repetitive scenes mid-flight but that’s what works for me in Adams novels. There’s no big plot going on most of the time. Usually just vibes. And the vibes on this one worked for me.

I did wish we got to see more of them off the plane that didn’t involve sex but tbh there was only like two sex scenes that came in pretty late in the story so we really did see most of their time together spent talking without being nakey and I was okay with that here! It would have just been nice to see them go on a regular date (tho I did really love the on flight date Isaac plans. So cute!)

This was just about the perfect book for me. I thought River and Isaac's meet cute was adorable and each time they met on the plane. From learning more about one another, the giddiness in anticipating seeing each other every weekend just flowed through me too. In the beginning Isaac and River think they have little in common, but as time goes on, they realilze they are more alike than they thought. They just want to be seen, really seen, and loved for who they are. River is forever trying to please her family and Isaac thinks his job and a high society life is what is meant for him. Forever trying to fit into boxes they aren't meant to be in, but learning that they can have someone who loves them unconditionally and the pieces just fit into place and feel right.
The only thing I wasn't in love with was a few weeks where it skipped over what was happening and I just felt like I needed a little more detail on how they were growing their budding relationship. I fell in love with these two though and got some serious butterflies. 4.5 stars.

Who doesn’t love an amazing Airplane romance?
I finished this book in one sitting and absolutely loved it.

From the beginning to the end I was so entertained with Grumpy Isaac and his sunshine River. They were completely opposite to each other but they had this amazing and unique connection. You could clearly see Isaac was unable to resist her charm from the first meeting itself.
What I enjoyed the most was, how good they were for each other. They communicated well had mutual respect.
Overall a short, cute and fun romance.

Safe and recommended.

in flight was fine. i know it’s a novella, but i feel like i missed out on a lot of details. even with the lack of explanation, i did enjoy what i read. the fmc was a little annoying and if they just communicated things would have been fine. even the mmc was like girl tell me your feelings/worries.

River Kennedy and Isaac Becker live in two different cities but meet on a flight. It ends up they have the same weekend travel schedule from Savannah to Boston and back for several weekends. She's helping with her sister's weeding plans and he's traveling for work. And this seemingly innocuous setup leads to a delightful romance in the making as they fly the friendly skies.

I love the personalities of these characters – their layers, their quirks, their vulnerabilities – I love everything about them. Charming, heartfelt, and entertaining, this quick, easy, fun read is sure to be a favorite of romance readers everywhere.

“You don’t pick up vibes?”
Up go his eyebrows again. “I’ve never picked up a vibe in my life.”

My palate cleanser after the rough and deeply moving ride that was Heat by R. Lee Smith turned out to be In Flight by Noelle Adams, a light, funny, and endearingly awkward romance that unfolds almost entirely in the cramped confines of an airplane. What begins as an irritating series of encounters between two frequent fliers turns into a slow-burn love story about vulnerability, self-awareness, and taking risks when it’s easier to stay the course and keep your heart protected.

31-year old River Kennedy is an HR professional who likes structure, security, and her carefully curated quiet life in Savannah. Her neurotic tendencies and soft-hearted nature are balanced by a wry sense of humor and an almost compulsive tendency to giggle, even when exasperated. Isaac Becker, on the other hand, is her polar opposite; an analytical, grounded man with a corporate job in finance and a habit of dissecting people as though they are puzzles to be solved. The two of them end up seated next to each other on the same weekend flights between Savannah and Boston, week after week, and what starts as a battle of wits gradually morphs into something deeper.

Their banter is sharp and occasionally cutting, with moments that are as exhilarating as they are intimate. The emotional pull between River and Isaac grows naturally, driven by small gestures and conversations that reveal more than either intends. River’s guarded nature, born out of past heartbreaks and her fear of choosing wrong again, feels believable, even if her constant giggling sometimes made her come across as immature. Isaac, for all his rationality, is far more perceptive than he lets on, and his slow unraveling into someone more emotionally open gives the story its quiet payoff.

That said, I found the novel a little too contained for my liking. The entire story taking place on airplanes or around them, created a kind of narrative claustrophobia. I wanted more context for River’s world outside of those flights, more about her family, her friendships, her life beyond Isaac. Still, Ms. Noelle’s humor and emotional nuance kept the story buoyant, and ultimately, even though River tended to annoy me with her hypocritical stands on issues and constant need to giggle, she redeemed herself proper enough to give me the “giggles”.

Recommended for: readers who enjoy low-angst, character-driven contemporary romances with witty banter, opposites-attract dynamics, and a feel-good, slow-burn payoff.

Final Verdict: A slow-burn airplane romance that’s equal parts witty and tender and reminds you love sometimes takes off in the most unexpected places — even at 30,000 feet.

This is a Flighty Novella and it is River and Isaac’s story and what a beautiful read. River flew from Savannah to Boston every weekend and sat in her favourite seat because she was on her way to help her sister with her wedding but while on the plane the man sitting next to her is rude and opinionated and he also seems to know things which make things seem spooky and then she finds out that they will be traveling companions for the next two months which could be good or bad and cause more complications that River could do without. The more time that River and Isaac spend together on the flight something changes between them both and eventually they end up spending the night together and connecting in a really special way but what will happen when River’s sister is married and she no longer needed to travel. Will River and Isaac be able to work out a long distance relationship or will it end up just being a temporary fling which means that they walk away from each other after there time together even though there feelings for each other is so strong and they both want a future together even though they live miles apart. I absolutely love how River and Isaac get to know each other while sitting together on a plane so it just shows that you never know when or how you will meet your perfect person that turns out to be your soulmate and get the happiness that they want in the end. The banter and serious conversations between River and Isaac were so good and engaging and I couldn’t put this book down as I was addicted right from the first page and it had me turning the pages to see what would happen next and what there outcome would be and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. Noelle Adams is a amazing author and writer and her books are definitely worth reading and she certainly knows how to keep her readers attention throughout her books.

‘In flight’ is a novella length, sweet romance story. The main characters are River Kennedy and Isaac Becker. Both are in their thirties and are content with the lives they lead. They have a good job and a relationship that they feel good about. Their first meeting on the plane doesn’t go well, but for their own personal reasons, neither of them want to switch seats, so that means they’ll be sitting next to each other every weekend for the next few months. Their characters are very different, but the more they get to know each other, the more curious they become about the other. Soon they have interesting conversations with each other, about their work, personal lives and feelings. Both are looking more and more forward to the hours they spend together on the plane. After a while both are wondering about their future. Could a relationship work when they live in different cities? They will have to make some difficult decisions to have a future together.

This was a light, sweet, easy to read story. The story was told from River’s POV. River was the artistic type, she liked to draw, was creative, sensitive and intuitive. She was also a people pleaser. Isaac was the complete opposite of River. He was more rational, well organized, ambitious and hard-working. Both were great characters, they complemented each other well. I liked how with each flight they grew closer and closer, the banter between them was amusing. Although both were in a relationship, neither was unfaithful. They treated their partner correctly. There were a few sex scenes in the story and there was also an epilogue. I liked it.

✈️🤍 RIVER + ISAAC 🤍✈️

Thank you so much @netgalley and @victoryeditingngc for this wonderful ARC! This is my first read by Noelle Adams and I absolutely enjoyed the humor and relatability in this novella.

River and Isaac immediately triggered the moments between Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly in You’ve Got Mail. Remember the coffee shop scenes where their banter would go back and forth early in the movie where they were so sure they could read each other? I was always wondering if the next flight they took from Savannah to Boston would be the one where sparks would fly. I highly recommend this sweet and emotional novella.

✈️ Flying from Savannah to Boston every weekend for two months to help my sister with her upcoming wedding would be fine if it weren’t for the obnoxious airplane guy. He has a job in Savannah for a few months and flies home to Boston every weekend, so he’s always on my flights.

Even that might be tolerable if he didn’t always choose the seat right beside me. But he won’t move, and neither will I. So now we’re stuck. Side by side for flight after flight.

After flight.

So what if he’s kind of attractive? And softer than he pretends? His life is in Boston, and mine is not. His career is his priority, and the happy, secure world I’ve worked hard to build for myself in Savannah is mine.

So he’s still the obnoxious airplane guy to me, and no matter how often our paths might cross, that’s all he can ever be.

River settles into her favourite seat on a flight from Boston back to her family home Savannah, sketching designs for her sister’s upcoming wedding. What she didn’t expect is her seat mate Isaac to be grumpy yet compelling at the same time, to also discover they will be seated next to each other for the next 2 months as he travels for work.
Neither will change seat although it soon becomes clear that neither one would want to, even if they can’t admit it yet.
They try ignoring each other but flight after flight brings them closer, soon starting to open up to each other. River has to convince herself that Isaac is just the airplane guy….or is he.
I love Noelle’s writing style and this I loved this short novella. It felt believable how they went from annoyance to laughter, meeting someone who frustrates yet intrigues you at the same time.
I fell in love with Isaac when he opened up to River “You still think you always have to fade into the background so other people can take the applause. You still believe that you’ll never be center stage. That you’re not worth going to the ends of the world for. That who you are-your radiant, beautiful spirit-doesn’t cast sunshine on everyone you meet. That it hasn’t transformed everything for me.”
A 5 star read for me, It has me hooked, I loved the short fast faced storyline and a good amount of 🌶️.

For fans of star crossed lovers and stories where love knows no distance, In Flight was a welcome change of pace from other stories in its genre. With a premise of two people taking the same flights and falling in love, I was intrigued to see how it all unfolded. While this book didn't live up to my expectations, it did deliver a sweet and simple story.

There was a bit of glamorization of travel that I didn't love, it lacked its root in realism that we never heard them complain about someone leaning their seat back or actually missing their flight or anything like that. Having their first proper date on the plane was a cute twist though that I loved.

The characters lacked emotional chemistry and it felt more like a physical attraction than an emotional one, I think a plot where they hooked up and then had to sit next to each other on flights would've created a better tale where they grew more emotional depth together towards a relationship.

How did they go so far into this book (over halfway) and not look each other up once on social or anything? They exchanged both first and last names! That was mind boggling to me and only made sense if they exchanged first names only. That made the believability take a sharp nose dive and too obvious of one to not have been rectified in the editing process.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Read if you like: forced proximity, hate to love, short story

River is an organised person, she has her rituals and a routine down that she’s not ready to change.

Her reaction to Isaac had me feeling 🤨😒 because she was so immature. She’s supposedly a “nice person” but her attitude said otherwise. She’s hurt after his response to her analysis? What did she expect? She insults him and expects him not to react that way?? Girl 😭 I thought it was ridiculous to make a lot of assumptions about each other and happen to get it right - they don’t even know each other

I didn’t like River’s personality at all and Isaac was forgettable. Their mannerisms were childish, and I didn’t like them as individuals let alone as a couple.

River starts crying because he doesn’t want to open up to her - they’ve only had a few conversations together?? He doesn’t owe her anything, she honestly had me rolling my eyes so many times in this book

This story had elements that were ridiculous to me and I felt like I couldn’t connect to any of the characters. I don’t know why they even fell for each other
It’s a shame this is my least liked Noelle book 😭

Thank you so much to Noelle for this ARC, all opinions are my own

In Flight is a novella by Noelle Adams. River Kennedy is making weekly trips for the next three months from Savannah to Boston to lend her creativity and help in making her sister Raven’s wedding the fairy tale event Raven and her mother want. Their dream would be River’s nightmare.

Isaac Becker has aspired to social climbing. This is seen in his finance job and his society girlfriend. But something is missing and Isaac isn’t really happy. Now he has a temporary auditing assignment in Savannah, making him travel back and forth from Boston each week.

River has many attachments and one of them is her seat selection on a plane—last row, right side, window seat. Isaac doesn’t like enclosed spaces. His choice airplane seat is last row, right side, aisle seat. Thus River and Isaac become seat mates over the many weeks of commuting. During that time they spar over petty annoyances, bond over likes and dislikes, make life changes, suffer loss, and make an uncommon connection.

This is a lovely story about finding your person and how it can happen in unpredictable ways. I very much enjoyed River and Isaac’s story and do recommend it.

This is a great afternoon's reading immersion for the romance lovers. Connecting as regular seat mates on flights was a fab idea on the author's part. What started as annoyance at one another, petty nosiness in each others' lives and eventually a genuine interest and friendship felt genuine in the time that was taken. Both characters had their weird quips and they seemed opposites.

I liked how they connected casually and that something deeper emerged. The MMC was a bit tightly wound and the FMC seemed to be a doormat to her family. Both help each other unwind some of those issues in a pleasing way.

There was a gentle amount of spice in this read and I believed their chemistry. The push and pull towards the end stopped this from tripping into predictable territory and finished the story on a good note.

Thank you to the author for the review copy.

I don’t understand the people who gave this 2 stars or less. This was a fucking delight from start to finish. I see some people disliking the heroine for her sensitivity and propensity to be intuitive. I know a woman just like her and I could see this story through her eyes and really understood the character. Isaac was a harder nut to crack because he was definitely obnoxious at the beginning but he does explain this as his unwillingness to be uncomfortable due to her being so real and interacting with her requires him to do likewise. He also was playing it cool too much and gave her no real indication of his true feelings which exacerbated her insecurities and made her anxious. But also without this kind of conflict, the book would be boring so their conflict had to be internal. It was a novella length and thus it would never be fully fleshed out to iron out those things but overall I think Noelle Adams did very well in the pages she had.

In Flight is a fun, cute read. It’s got a clever premise: two people have reasons to sit in particular seats on weekend shuttle flights, and when they realize they’ll be sitting together every weekend for months, they end up getting to know each other—and realizing there might be more to them than just being airplane companions.

Both Isaac and River are charming, and I really liked that each had faults in how they behaved and in how they saw one another. I also liked the challenge that Adams gave herself in setting a book primarily on a plane! As per usual with Adams, this book is told from the woman’s POV, yet I found myself understanding Isaac’s motives quite well compared to other books.

This isn’t a deep read from Adams as it is a novella (albeit a longer one). But I found it delightful and enjoyable. It would be the perfect read to accompany, oh, say—your next long-distance flight?

River is forced to fly weekly from Savannah to Boston to help her sister with wedding planning. She ends up seated next to Isaac who also has the same weekly flight due to his work assignment in Savannah for the next few months.

As they spend more and more time together, the chemistry also becomes harder to resist. From strangers to friends, it soon becomes more. I loved how they could openly share stories with each other, knowing that they could be their real selves without judgement from the other person.

When they finally move on to “more”, I loved how Isaac prepared for their first date. It was so good! While it wasn’t a smooth ride (or flight) throughout, whatever challenges they faced only proved how good they are together. The ending was lovely and it was nice to end on that note.

Airline connection.

River and Isaac have preferred seats on a plane that flies from Savannah to Boston on Fridays and back on Sundays. When they first meet there is an instant animosity between them. Neither is willing to move their seat so they are stuck next to each other on these flights for the next three months. As time goes by, and they begrudgingly get to know one another, a spark ignites.

I enjoyed reading about River and Isaac and (at first) their mutual dislike that leads to understanding and then more. It was a quick jump from not being able to tolerate one another to mad love, but I do love it when the grumpy and standoffish man realizes what is right in front of him. I liked watching River learn to stand up for herself with her family and go after what she wants. This was a quick and enjoyable read.

3.5 stars. A cute romance novella, as usual by this author. Her books are a good pallet cleanser for me, as they are straightforward and simple to read, with interesting plots.

The back and forward from Savannah to Boston via plane was interesting, but it was slightly confusing in one instance. I'm positive the author said they were landing in Boston after their weekend away. They then went to River's tiny apartment. But doesn't she live in Savannah and her parents are in Boston? Our hero had to go to his hotel the following morning as he's commuting from his home in Boston for work. Then, the next weekend, they went to Issac's apartment in Boston before River went to her parent's home to visit... Anyway...

There are steamy romance scenes written in a true to life way. This novella is a good way to spend three hours or so. It's well written, from River's POV only.

Thank you netgalley for the free copy to review!!

I found this book to be a quick, easy, fun and romantic read. Imagine being stuck next to the same person on a flight to and from location to location and falling hopelessly and madly in love?

Isaac and River were great characters, funny, witty, sarcastic, argumentative. The dialogue was a bit repetitive in the beginning and I was getting a bit annoyed with River (FMC) but in the end I could relate to character and not wanting to rush into anything and thinking she may have made a mistake.

I respected Isaacs character is the fact that he never pressured River into anything and gave her the space to come to her own conclusions.

overall, it was a great little read and I enjoyed it.

I've been so excited for In Flight since it was announced, I love Noelle's work and the premise of this one completely drew me in - I knew I would love it once I read it.

I loved the dynamic between River and Isaac, they understood each other so well from the beginning. Noelle is masterful at writing so much in such little pages, I feel we know River and Isaac so deeply and I loved watching their relationship blossom completely naturally.

"His mouth twitches just slightly before he turns back to his laptop.
It makes me want to smile.
I don't. He would surely see that as a victory, and there's no sense in giving him one of those."

I enjoyed this story so much!

River has to fly back to Boston every weekend to help prepare for her sister's wedding. Isaac is flying to Savannah every week for work. For their own reasons, they prefer the seats in the back of the plane, so they are going to be traveling together for several weekends. They spark off of each other immediately, but they both decide it must be annoyance. But they get to know one another, and an attraction blooms. There are several obstacles that they must face when not in flight, so it is not obvious how they can be together. I loved reading about their ups and downs. They make a very cute couple.
