***This is a reprint of the 1947 original.*** To serve both as a manual of instruction and as a work of reference — such is the twofold purpose of this encyclopedia. The plan some serves the purpose. Wherever feasible, two books have been devoted to a the first systematically presenting fundamentals, the other exploring ramifications. Thus, the needs of the beginning and the advanced reader are fairly met. The content and intent of the individual books are outlined below. "Grammar for Use describes the persistent pattern of related words and its aim is to be illuminating rather than exhaustive on such various matters as case, inflection, and concord. The "Dictionary of grammar" is comprehensive and complex, and ought to be studied intensively only by those estimable people peruse dictionaries with enjoyment. "The next two books deal with English spelling and the rules the second is a dictionary listing the Mavericks of the spelling range. The next two books the old punctuation dealing with practice rather than principle. The following two books attacked the topic of pronunciation. The following two books deal with usage considering for example the constructions most frequently abused, examining reference, agreement, idiom. The following three books deal with vocabulary such as the "Dictionary of Affixes", and the "Dictionary of Roots and Stems". The following two books deal with rhetoric and composition than there is a book on prosody and one called the "Dictionary of Rimes". Finally the last three are entitled the "History of the English Language", "Dictionary of World Literature", and "History of English and American Literature — from Beowulf to Thomas Wolfe".
