Picasso's Animals

Rate this book
This beautifully designed book is filled with illustrations and photographs of the many animals in Picasso’s life—those he painted and drew, as well as those he loved. One of the few under-examined aspects of Picasso’s life and work was his love of animals. The son of a pigeon breeder and an aficionado of bullfighting, Picasso had an eye trained for capturing an animal’s movement, shape, and personality—often with just a single line. Organized around the different types of animals that played a role in the artist’s life and body of work—from his beloved dachshund, Lump, to dogs, cats, and doves, among others—each chapter offers personal accounts, amusing anecdotes, and wondrous works of art. The perfect gift for lovers of animals or Picasso’s art, this exquisite treasury of expertly rendered creatures is filled with humor, warmth, and the tremendous bonds between man and animal.

A look at the intersection between animals and art as seen through an examination of the work of Pablo Picasso, and how it was influenced by the animals that were a part of his life and served as muses for some of his paintings and sculpture. The book includes photographs of Picasso and his pets, and illustrations of the works that they inspired.

Save for a couple images — of a dove and of hands grasping a bouquet— my knowledge of Picasso has been paltry. I was blessed with an opportunity to see an exhibit: Picasso: From Antibes to Louisville, earlier this month at the KMAC ( my last outing before sheltering in place). While it was from a narrow time in the artist’s life, the exhibit, using drawing, ceramics and paintings, gives a glimpse of his life and painting process from conception to completion. Fortunately Picasso befriended several photographers in his life and images from the one at this period in his life, Michel Sima, gave the exhibit more depth and gave us a view of Picasso’s life. A film interviewing his then wife and children and others added more.
While at the exhibit I picked up a copy of “Picasso’s Animals” and I’ve been pleased with the thoroughness. The well-researched book not only tells about the relationships a Picasso had with all the animals (owls, pigeons, goats, cats, dogs, monkeys) that he had in his life, but demonstrates the impact they had on his work both directly in images he drew of them and indirectly in their features which showed up in other images.
Along the way we learn about his career, loves and wives, places he’s lived and the timeline of his life all interspersed with photographers, drawings and paintings.
I particularly love the image of the quartered bull because of how the simple lines show different planes of the pictures and renders the animal 3 dimeniosl.
This book is a quick read that has given me a corner of the foundation for understanding Picasso’s life.

An incredibly beautiful book on Picasso's life and his relationship with animals, all the way through. Pigeons, dogs, cats, horses, bulls, owls, MONKEYS, goats. If Picasso's reputation has fallen during the last few years due to his well-known misogyny, still anyone who loves Art sees in Picasso a terribly interesting persona, whose oeuvre both depicts and transcends its life. And so, his lifelong love for animals is simply beautiful: how he used to visit Paris from Barcelona accompanied only by his dog, not to feel lonely; how he kept rescuing and keeping any animal he found, and how they loved him. How special his relationship with some of them was: I've always thought that mistreating animals is a psychopathic personality trait, and that animals have the ability to perceive in our gaze and body our own animality, how open we're to it. And so, Picasso was very much an animal —it was him, after all, that said humans were 3/4 animals— who never ceased to keep others close to him, for they gave him life, love and, above all, inspiration. Lovely book, as good as Klee's Angels.
