So I persevered, hoping at some point the plot would actually develop but in all honesty, this has become exhausting to read.
I’m all for cute cry baby MCs who are vibrant and charming.
This MC is a crybaby who lacks all charm. All the author talks about is how virtuous he is as a wife and how beautiful he is. He has no desire for independence, the education he talks about is just basic understanding of how to live in a modern world and then don’t get me started on how he exists to put down the modern woman.
I started finding his coquettishness offensive because it was written at the expense of independent female characters. His husband is supposed to be so intelligent yet has not straight out asked him why he’s so different? Not noticed the significant difference in his behaviour? Like common sense would tell you that trauma can trigger personality changes but not to the point of how the MC behaves.
This story is pretty much a traditional BG and the only satisfactory aspect I got from it is the showcasing of a male character written typically the way male authors write female characters.
Also I don’t get why authors always write the MC as so excessively virtuous that they cannot be active participants in the bedroom. There was a specific line that irked me to no end where the MC says he’s definitely not looking forward to the next time they sleep together. Like you might as well say that only one party is enthusiastic whilst the other feels like it’s rape.
This type of characterisation needs to stop. It’s exhausting.
