A Witch's Entanglement

Rate this book
It's early fall, 1975. The war is over, ABBA recently released their spectacular third studio album, and Gretchen Marigold is having the time of her life.

Making her way lovingly through the wanna-be witches who live alongside real magic users in her coven, Gretch is leaving a trail of broken hearts but satisfied lovers in her wake. Her life in the small town of Starbridge, Massachusetts is fun, carefree, and enchantingly delicious.

Across town, rushing to a lecture on the Religions of Precolonial Mexico, Jace's life is the opposite of carefree. Though she too is a witch, and a far more powerful one at that, she's less than two semesters away from finishing her PhD at Wellesley College, and her schedule is jam-packed. As a black woman in academia, she has to work twice as hard for half the credit. As an ambitious woman with goals of helping others like her gain access to a quality education, Jace works three times as hard.

When these two very different witches meet, their opposing viewpoints and attitudes towards magic proves eruptive. In more ways than one.

But just as their unrelenting attraction towards each other begins to blossom into something deeper, a charismatic and thoughtful visitor comes to town and everything changes.

Is the passion between Jace and Gretchen enough to supersede their differences, or will they be torn apart by the opinions of others and the shadows of their past?

SHUT UP RIGHT NOW!!! Sabrina! I went through every emotion reading this book. I love sapphic books and I love witches, this was right up my alley. I didn’t know how much I would vibe with the 70’s setting but it was perfect!

Gretchen is so freaking smooth and confident. If I were a single lady, I’d use her pick up line. She and Jace had me giddy. I was giggling and kicking my feet at several points and having my own moments of gay panic at others. I really loved the side characters too, Beckett and Tabby have some stories to tell I just know it.

While I saw the main conflict coming it was not even close to being what I thought. I was pleasantly surprised and could barely put this book down. Sabrina Marley spun a wonderful tale of magic and love in under 300 pages, she’s a mastermind. I only have one question, where tf are the stop signs??

Thank you, Sabrina for the gift of reading this book early. It’s going to become a new addition to my personality (Alexa, play Super Trouper by ABBA).

I LOVED this book! 🖤

The main characters, Jace and Gretchen were insanely lovable, well written and extremely relatable. The side characters, like Beckett and Lucinda were so well fleshed out, you couldn’t help but enjoy them every time they showed up.

The tension between the two of them was so good and it made for their little moments (as they got more passionate later) all the better.

The plot was great! I enjoyed how it was mostly a romance book, but the twist of RJ fit well and it made me read faster because I wanted to know how things would pan out.

The societal issues, like racism and homophobia, that were mentioned in the book made for such a realistic read. Two women in the 1970’s, both queer and one Black. The issues that they faced were clearly depicted and I loved how the characters handled it.

Despite this being a relatively short read, the pacing was perfect. It didn’t feel rushed or half-baked and frankly, I was more than satisfied with how it ended (despite being willing to read at least 400 pages more about these two). I truly could’ve kept reading about them.

This is now one of my favorite sapphic books! If you’re looking for a quick, witchy, sapphic read, I highly recommend this book.

Oh, and spice rating: 🌶️🌶️

Wonderful book

This was a great and quite entertaining story to read. It was smart, funny, and took place in a nice time period - the 70s.

The plot was interesting and simply sucked you in, with Gretchen’s attitude to life and a dash of adventure and witchcraft.

The pace was just right and the writing style suited me perfectly. The dual POV gave perspective on both main characters’ way of thinking and living. Mentions of ABBA immediately created a soundtrack for this book in my head.

I really liked Gretchen’s playfulness. She just lit up the space with her presence. Jace and Gretchen were two opposites with good chemistry between them. They were just drawn to each other.

There was a very well-created villain - Richard. He was just a balanced amount of complicated and twisted.

The book moves important subjects like women empowering, fighting for their positions, and how difficult it was for women to get the same positions as men to be acknowledged, and how much harder they had to work for it.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I laughed a lot and got tense during more intense scenes. I really recommend reading it!

Anyone who knows me, knows that romance is not my main genre, or even one I pick up often. When I do, I’m looking for a certain quality. A richness of character, a charm within the author’s voice, an exceptional plot. Which is not to shame romance readers or authors - every fiction genre has its popcorn, my own cozy reads just tend to be space operas.

Romance on its own as a subject, doesn’t interest me all that much, so when I read a romance, the book generally has its work cut out for it to romance *me*.

In a market that rewards churning out volume, and not necessarily quality. I have been known to go on rants about romance authors that forget to have any other focus than the inevitability or two people getting together.

I’ve read all of Sabrina Marley’s books, as I am trying to make more of an effort to give developing new authors a fair shot, and I’m glad I have. This feels like the book where Marley has truly found her voice. I burned through this in only a couple days. Would have finished it in one setting if my eyes had let me. Marley has a spark of something special.

I have seen flashes of her voice, which has an instant charm in and of itself. Enough to keep me engaged right to to the end, even on her earliest novella. With each new story, I’ve heard that charming voice coming through more and more.

Which is not a slight to her previous works, but to emphasize that her craftsmanship is growing at near meteoric speeds. Even reading the first page gave me such a delightful mind’s image that I laughed out loud.

Her characters have enough discerning personality and memorable characteristics that I found myself having the urge to hang around the town and just people watch, maybe try to grab coffee with a few particularly delightful characters.

I really love that she also has not danced around the complications of interracial relationships and queer relationships during this time period, but she also doesn’t get so mired in it that you forget it’s a romance. This queer romance has delightfully feminist zingers, and recognition of each other’s struggles throughout, but keeps itself overall centered in new joys, not dissecting trauma.

I will also note, that while I cannot go into detail, for fear of spoiling some things. I was rather impressed with the lack of tired tropes centered around near magical personality alterations after someone falls in love. You’ll find none of that here. Frankly, it’s a breath of fresh air. Don’t even get me started on how the glimpses of her witchy world building have been making me anxious for another glimpse, and another.

This book, in fact, has made me suspect that Sabrina Marley might be the new Nora Roberts. She has a similar charm that keeps even this rare romance reader glued to the page.

A Witch's Entanglement was a super cute, sapphic, feminist, and witchy story right out of the 70s that perfectly embodied the issues surrounding race, sexuality and feminism during that time period. I appreciated the small references to current events within the book that captured exactly where, in the 70s time frame, these characters existed. I absolutely loved the distinct voices of our 2 FMCs in this dual-POV novel and fell in love with each of their personalities. I did find myself at times craving more character development and more information surrounding the lives and events of the individuals so that I would have had more ability and time to connect with them individually. There was a beautiful framework built that painted a clear picture of what these characters were facing individually, and I found myself craving to understand those experiences more so that I could know these characters beyond their present presentation.
Overall, the story was exciting and funny. The characters were loveable and full-bodied. I appreciated how feminism played a huge role within the plot and that we were given two intelligent and driven women who don't take crap from anyone. These women know who they are and fight feircly for the respect of those around them in a society that is still learning to accept black women and queer individuals into society.
The witchy elements were a great touch and a perfect medium for exploring issues of the time and acceptance of those deemed different by society. I loved the magical elements and the exploration of religious trials between old pagan, witchy and tribal practices, and the Catholic/Christian religions that seek to squash those rich histories and overtake them
This book explored so many important topics in a very tactful and engaging way while also giving a very sweet and spicy sapphic romance that I'll remember for years to come.
I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to read this book and engage with these loveable and strong characters.

This was an interesting and fun story. A time piece of love and finding connection amid the swirling issues from the mid 1970s. There's a host of issues from racism, fighting for equality, homophobia, feminism, higher education and finding acceptance with one self amid family dynamics AND witchcraft. That's right witchy vibes and free love y'all. Pretty cool, right. Let's go to The Groovin' Broomstick and listen to ABBA.✌🏻✌🏻 I knew the big bad was coming.🙊😳 I. Knew. It!!!

There's a host of characters. Lucinda. Beckett. Love Beckett! He's a good friend. Royal. Vi. That woman is tough. Tabby. RJ. But the main couple is Gretchen Marigold and Jace Harlow. Love the names btw.🤩 Complete opposites but they got that chemistry going on. hehe Gretchen is such a player. Her humor, especially with Royal, is insane. Crack me up.🤣🤣 She's very easy going and a free spirit. Jace is incredibly smart and a go getter. She wants to change the workings of their society. Dr Harlow is going to change the world. And they... fall in love.👱🏻‍♀️❤️👩🏾‍🦱 If they can just admit it before the big bad decides to destroy them.😖😨😫🐦‍⬛

It's written well. A couple of times it got slow for me, but I understand it was trying to build the story's foundation. I enjoyed how the era shaped and created their very existence. I wanted more witchy history. There are hints, of course. Remember the witches here are like vampires, they don't age like human beings. So roughly they look 20 something but they're like in their 50s by human standards.🤪 I know. It's wild.😆😆 Show me more Cinnamon Harlow please.🐈‍⬛ Check out the magic but stay for the love. Cool book cover. Happy reading!!💜🩶💜🩶

💃🏼🪩☮️Thank you to Ms Marley and Booksprout for an early book. The opinions expressed here are my own.☮️🪩💃🏾

I don't usually read romance novels, but this is a perfectly paced, funny, clever, sexy, and witchy sapphic adventure that I couldn't put down.

The writing is excellent on the sentence level, chock full of subtle allusions and brilliant metaphors. Even the sex scenes feel fresh and fun, rather than cringy. There are several minor plot arcs that are woven into the story perfectly, making the world feel big and lived in. It’s progressive without being heavy handed or didactic. I love the diverse and unique characters! But what really makes this book soar is the dual POV. It’s so fun to inhabit the voice and world view of these two witches as they meet, flirt, fight, and work together.

"She put her hand out. I didn’t move to take it right away, but then Elana gently nudged my shoulder with her own and forced my arm forward. Gretchen’s hand was cool to the touch, and her fingers were soft as flower petals. A tiny zap from our temporarily connected magical current told me something else about this person.
She’s a witch.”

You get to go from that description to the other POV immediately:

“What were the fucking odds.
I came to this party for a little free food and maybe some information about the rambunctious freshman, and instead found something much better.
A stunning, whip-smart witch who liked ABBA.”

It’s such a joy to go back and forth between these two!

A Witch's Entanglement is already a 5-star read just for the build up. But in the second half it gets even more fun. “Entanglement” is the right word. All of our characters and plot lines get smashed together in a dramatic, magic-filled clash. Can't wait to read more from Sabrina Marley.

What a magical moment!

This book is chock full of them too! As a fellow witch lover, I was intrigued by this book. The character development was beautifully done and the relationship between the main two females was adorable. There were several moments throughout that were relatable and laughable as well. I love a good book that makes you feel every emotion out there and this one definitely does.

The plot was well written as well and the ending was unexpected. The climax of the story was intense, and very well described. I enjoyed reading that scene and when it was all over it was like a breath of fresh air. You were on your toes up until the end came and you knew everything would be okay.

As an ARC reader it is books like this that make me excited to see the authors journeys and to find out what comes next. ARC reading this book was a joyous time and I wish I could read it all over again for the first time, so I could feel those emotions again.

We shall see where the next book takes us. Until then. 😘 💋

OH WOW this was a great story. I absolutely loved this story. It was a steamy page turner and the suspense was intense. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t even put it down. Jace and Gretchen characters were so much in love it was insane. The chemistry between them was sexual tension and the physical attraction was on spicy level of passion and romance. The drama was intense and captivating of love and desire.
I most definitely recommend this book and you won’t be disappointed. I received advance copy of this book via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion. Trina Jones

Overcoming Differences

In regard to what Jace and Gretchen need to overcome, there was so much more than the time period were race, religious beliefs and sexual orientation were contested by others. Their magic and differences set their path towards love and acceptance. It was good to read such a diverse story that was entertaining. This was not what I generally feel engaged to read but the blurb was enticing me to give it a shot, and it was worth it.

I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily leave this review.

A sapphic novel taking place in the 1970s, this book addresses some issues of the time such as sexism, racism, and homophobia. As such, there were several moments when I wanted to reach through the screen and either shake or slap a character or two.

The characters are well-developed/written and while subtle hints are dropped, there is a MAJOR plot twist that -to me- felt like it came swinging out of left field (something I appreciate)! I literally had to stop and look around the room gaping like “did you guys just read that too???” to my imaginary audience.

The spice is about 2 🌶️.

I loved this book! The world-building, writing, and romance are top notch, as always. I also appreciate some of the more real-world themes that run through this magical novel. A Witch's Entanglement definitely stands on its own – but be warned – after reading it, you'll want to read everything else Marley has ever written! I love the new directions she is taking here with the period setting and the school. Five stars!!!

A Witch’s Entanglement was an engaging and fun read. The main characters were lovable. The initial tension between them made the story more interesting.

I appreciated how Marley alternated the POVs. Marley also did a good job highlighting racism and sexism in academia.

The scene where Gretchen meets Vi in a jealous moment was hilarious!

And I loved the 🌶️!

Very entertaining book.

This is the story of two witches, Jace and Gretchen, who are almost polar opposites of each other. One fairly open about her witchcraft and the other hides it totally. Although there is enormous attraction between the two, can their differences be resolved so that they can make a life together?
