Book One of the Second Chance Novels

Ledger sees the defeat in her eyes the moment she sits at the bar, devastated and beautiful. The emptiness in her gaze he understands to his core, and he's instantly compelled to help this brown-haired beauty fight the source of her pain. Determined and intense, he needs to use his strength to help her find her own. Cam Foster, in that instant, becomes the dove he wants to free from her cage. From the first night, he needs her.

Cruelly, the past refuses to let her go. The lingering manipulation holds her in that cage as the control she lived under continues to crush the woman she wants to become. Even though Ledger offers her heated passion and a safe haven, she can't find her way out.

Desire and danger fight to pull her life in two directions…but those forces may crumble as Ledger fights harder than any barrier he and his dove face.

I wanted to start off by saying... PLEASE DON'T HATE ME FOR THIS REVIEW...

I'm going to start with the things that I like about the book first.

Ledger was a hot, and I wouldn't mind having some sexy time with him! He can pin me down anytime!

I thought Cam was a pretty strong woman. Even with everything she went through and was programed to do by her ex, she does everything she can to over come that and be her own person.

I thought this book was OK. It had a good story line and was pretty fast paced, but I dunno, it just didn't do it for me.

Now on to the things I wasn't the biggest fan of..

Ledger seemed like a great guy, and I understand how he wanted to help free Cam from her past, but it was to wishy washy for me. I can't really explain what it was exactly that put me off from that part of the story.

Then I NEVER thought I would EVER say this, but there was WAY to much sex in the book for me. If you knew me personally, you would know that I'm all about the sexy time, but it got to be a little to much. Every chapter had a scene and after a while I just started to skim the pages.

As with every book, not everyone is going to like it/love it, and I'm really disappointed I had to be one of those people. But please don't let what I have to say stop you from reading this book. The story here is good, and if you like a ton of sex then you'll really enjoy it :)

Cam is just trying to get out a bad relationship. She was young and blinded by the money and security her rich professor offered her. It takes her awhile to realize that Garrett is just turning her into a "Barbie" to make him look good. After two years of being controlled, she finally walks away. Through her best friend, she meets bartender Ledger.

The two hit it off immediately and start a intense relationship. Ledger realized from the moment he saw Cam that she is running from something. He vows to take it easy with her and help her to break out of her cage.

Cam thinks she is finally free of Garrett and able to live her live the way she wants too. Only Garrett is not done and refuses to let Cam go so easy. He is psycho and refuses to let Cam make him look bad. He goes to extremes to get what he wants.
This was great book. The relationship between Cam and Ledger is very intense and erotic. The added thrills in the book from Garrett make it even more interesting. Great story line, great plot and explosive sex scenes.

I liked this story, but there was something "off" about Ledger. I never felt like I got to know him. I could not figure out why he liked Cam. I just did not get it. I always felt like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. That there was something wrong and he was t being honest with her. While that was not the case, I spent the entire book feeling that way so I just could not enjoy the story. Also, it really felt much more like a rebound for Cam than a love story.

5 Stars-Amazing (couldn't put the book down-dangerous addiction),

I literally could not put this book down. What a thrill. I felt like I was watching a movie of suspense. I didn't know what was going to happen next. Amazing story-line and the characters were perfect. I would definitely read more from this author.

Standalone part of a series. Single POV from heroine. No cliffhanger. 17+readers for lots of HOT sexual content.

Ledger Emerson is a bartender at Second Chance where he first lays on Camille Foster when she arrives with her friend, Shelby. Cam is running from a past relationship and Ledger is immediately drawn to the lost look on her face. They both have an attraction to one another they can not deny, even though they try. As Shelby encourages Cam to get out and be herself, Cam finds herself hanging out at the bar whenever they go out. Ledger and Cam strike up a friendly relationship with one another the more time they spend together. They truly feel comfortable with each other, and quickly dismiss any other feelings they may feel for each other.

As we all know, denial doesn't last forever. Both Ledger and Cam find themselves unable to stay away from each other, for many different reasons. Ledger knows Cam is troubled and desperately wants to free her from herself. Cam can't shake the feeling that, although she trusts Ledger, he is keeping secrets as well.

I can not say much beyond this point other than Ledger is one walking sex stick that i'd like to get a piece of! He knows how to treat a woman... on many levels. He's passionate. He's Loyal. He's determined. He's an Alpha male, and we love him for it!! He sees Cam for herself, which she has not been used to for some time. I love them together! When secrets threaten their new relationship, bonds are tested and pushed. Ledger and Cam only fight harder to try and make their love save them.

For a debut novel, I say that Michaels has given us a final book well done! The story was solid, and did not have a lot of holes that one might expect from a first attempt. And the sex scenes...yes there are sex scenes, so if you don't like that, don't read it....the sex scenes are... well..... you'll see! Let's just say that I need a shirt that says: "I LICKED LEDGER".

I'm not sure where Michaels is taking the next book in the series, but I am well in for the long haul!!!

And as for what could be so strong to tear Ledger and Cam apart....... I'll never tell! ~ xo A

My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

“Everything I’m qualified to do falls under the category of minimum wage because I have no qualifications other than being conscious.”

“I stare at him wide-eyed, feeling like that speech must have been told in my imagination. He couldn’t have laid his heart out like that, not for me. I swear I can’t catch my breath. His words… his strong body… he’s stolen the air from my lungs.”

“As soon as I had you, I wanted more of you. I want to make you mine in every way.”

“My world is never so right as when I’m with Ledger.”

My Review:

Oh swoon. I want me a Ledger! He is the perfect man, so of course he has to be a work of fiction, as those beings simply do not exist in real life. He is handsome, successful, insightful, rich, funny, smart, a stalwart protector, a thoughtful and caring individual, and a well-endowed and multi-talented lover. Sigh, I was so breathless, I actually became dizzy from just reading about his mad skills. This is my first Kemmie Michaels read and won’t be my last, as thankfully, I have two more of her books already loaded on my kindle. I adored her story and fully appreciated and reveled in a romance where the main characters are pulling together against an outside force, rather than fighting each other. Her writing was creative, easy to follow, smooth, and volcanically hot. The characters were well defined, likable, and intriguing. I was instantly hooked from page one and wasn’t able to put my kindle down for more than a few moments all day. Now excuse me as I must go - Mason is calling...

Where can I find myself a Ledger?! I wouldn't change a thing except to make him real! Cam's a lucky girl.

I have a few Kemmie Michaels works on my TBR list, but this was my first to actually read. There will be no hesitation to read another in the future. So, Mason I'll see you soon.

Escape followed by romance

I don’t know. This book was fine, the writing is fine, the story is fine (if not a little predictable), the characters are fine; everything is okay, it just didn’t really evoke anything in me. It’s clear the author is trying to show that Cam got the courage to leave an abusive relationship and learns to stand on her own two feet, but I don’t know if I buy that she really did.
So Cam was with this guy for a few years, the emotionally manipulative, gaslight, likes to leave bruises kind of jerk. When the book starts she is literally on the side of the road waiting for her ride as she leaves him. He’s clearly a crazy, delusional guy. I actually find that he is pretty well written, the author does a great job showing his devolution into crazy town. Cam moves in with a friend while she starts her life over, and I thought she did that well, she got a job, paid back the people who helped her, got a car, really pulled herself up. And then she meets the guy, and suddenly everything is all them and their sex life. In the beginning and the middle she really resists letting him make any changes to her life, she’s clinging to the independence she has found, but by the end he’s basically bank rolling everything and talked her into doing the things he wanted, and it’s all so romantic. I dunno, I didn’t like it.
As for Ledger, outside of hating his name, he was okay. I mean it’s clear he’s a good guy, and he really does just want to keep Cam safe from crazy guy. But honestly, it got so old listening to him repeatedly talk about Cam finding herself and “freedom” and then in the next chapter complaining that her job isn’t right for her. I don’t know, I didn’t love him.
I’m ambivalent about this book, no strong feelings one way or the other.

Disappointed

I didn’t like this story at all. I finished this book only because I hate not finishing a book and there have been very few occasions where that has happened. With that being said this was a forced completion. At times I was disinterested in the characters and at times I was extremely frustrated with them. Camille was so darn passive it was ridiculous. To the point where she didn’t want anyone to call her Camille because that was what her ex boyfriend called her and she had to watch the news to hear what people were saying about her after her ordeal with her ex. Really girl, she was so annoying. Ledger had Camille’s whole emotional being figured out when he first met her. Stop it, it was so ridiculously unrealistic. I read the blurb for the other books in the series. It was much of the same as this book so I have no desire to read them. I’m disappointed because I have never not read another book from a author just from reading one book. I originally gave this book two stars but I had to come back and edit it because I just found out it has two different titles. I got the book from Amazon as Rescue but on Goodreads it’s listed as Ledger. What’s up with that hmm?

Oh what a truly heart wrenching story. Cam or Camille is a strong woman that doesnt see her worth because of a horribly abusive relationship with a controlling psychopath that she leaves as the story starts. she is lost and broken at the begining of this book. Through the book she finds herself again and what she wants, who she wants and how she can get what she wants from her life without losing herself.

Her friend shelby takes her for a night out after sh left the dirtbag and she meets Ledger the sexy gorgous bartender or so you think he is just a bartender. But man he is so much more and you learn so much about his character through this book. He is the ipitamy of her knight in shining armor in this story. Amazing strong and falls deeply and madly in love with her.

Garrett is the villain of this story. God he is one vicious little bastard. I just hate him so much and im glad with what happens to him after what he does. Im so trying not to give spoilers but its so hard.

Its just a must read book for sure.

I will definitely be looking for the next book in this series about Mason and Shelby. This author is full of suprizes and I can wait to read more.

A Yes/No Romance

Cam leaves her controlling boy friend of two years with nothing but the clothes on her back. With the help of her friend, Shelby, she tries to find a job and start over. Unfortunately, Garrett, the boy friend is not ready to let her go while Cam meets Ledger and falls for ho hard. This is their story.

My issues:
First, Cam leaves a controlling situation and walks to Ledger, who, though caring, comes across as controlling, too. Just not comfortable with Ledger’s actions, at first, and question his statements about Cam being in charge of her life and choices. Their relationship is very muddy in this respect.

Second, Cam does not document any of the physical abuse she suffers at Garrett’s hands even after they split up. No restraint order is sought. She makes little effort to protect herself.

Third, Cam wants Garrett to leave her alone but never agrees to any suggestions offered by her friends or Ledger. So wish-washy.

Lots of sex, over and over, which became a filler for a better story.

Don’t think I’ll read the next book in the series.

If you like your books with sex in every effing chapter, this book is for you.

Honestly, I like me some smutty scenes in my contemporary romance books. But this? It's a whole 'nother level of smut. I even skipped some of them because it's too much.

This book is like...background story blah, blah. Characters meet. BOOM! Sex.

A few paragraphs about life blah, blah. Sex.

Let's go to the bar, drink, tell stories. Three paragraphs later...sex.

Insert suspense here for a chapter. After being rescued...sex. Seriously?

Ok. I admit. Not every chapter had sex. A chapter or two were saved from the insanity.

I didn't even get Ledger. I thought he had a dark secret of his own or some unsavory past that would add complication to the love story. Or why he felt compelled to help "free" Cam.

And Cam. Hmm. I didn't connect with her character. She's unremarkable.

A hero to make you swoon

Wow! Ledger is the man we all want, alpha but not a jerk, strong but not controlling, protective but not suffocating, insightful but not calculating, and oh, so sexy. Camille is one hot mess, but stronger than she knows. Both her best (only) friend Shelby and Ledger provide Camille with the support and encouragement to find herself and stand strong. There are a few editing glitches in this book, but the strength of the writing rolls right through them. Also, for those easily offended by explicit mater, there's a lot of sex in this book but it's so well integrated into the story that it doesn't feel gratuitous or overwhelming. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Repetitive and unrealistic

Very poor character and plot development. Cam just got out of an abusive relationship so it's not believable that she would fall for a guy so easily following such a relationship, especially when Ledger pushed hard for her to face her past. As the new guy, it's hard to believe he would want to know about the woman's past so desperately. Too many "secrets" between them (of course since they are a new couple) for the level of trust they put in each other; it doesn't match their level of intimacy. It's all physical at the end with very meaning behind the "I love you"s. I do not recommend this book.

Everyone deserves a second chance

Ledger was a sexy, smart, beautiful, passionate mystery. I felt like I needed to know more about him. I do think the book was well written, but the connection between Cam and Ledger seemed to be built on physical attraction. To me it felt like although he wanted her to be free he still held back a lot of himself. Cam was a strong, beautiful, complicated spirit. As much as she worked to find herself it seemed like she wanted to please Ledger. Overall I enjoyed the chemistry between them. The love that radiated from Ledger and the strength from Cam.

This was a free book offered on BookBub yesterday, and I got it expecting it to be a short, light, and funny read. I was really surprised to see that (underneath all the sex scenes) this was a little complex gem. It is a story about finding yourself and being with someone who pushes you to love yourself first before you can love someone else. I’m not saying this is an award winning novel or anything (because as much as I love sex scenes, this was borderline too much) but it was entertaining to say the least.

Rescue is my first book by Kemmie Michaels. Ms. Michaels has delivered a book with a good story, and while I prefer a little sex in my books, and never thought I'd say this, I think there were a few too many sex scenes. I think there were so many sex scenes it detracted from the actual story. Cam and Ledger's story is packed with drama, action, humor and yes, as I mentioned sex. The characters are well-developed and loveable, my favorite part of the book. Rescue is book 1 of the Second Chance Novels Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Needs to be cut in half

This story draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags. I feel the writer did not know what to do. I skipped half of it just out of sheer boredom. I would have given this a better rating if it was better quality. Someone needs to tell this author quality is better than quantity.

I'm glad this was free. I'd return it otherwise. Some of the sex scenes were pointlessly written. Probably to fill space. Won't be reading another one from this author. I would not recommend this. It's boring. Just skip to like the last chapter or something once you do the first 4.

Enjoyed the characters but I couldn’t get past Cam being only 22. Perhaps it’s because of my own age that I found myself thinking over and over again “but she’s only 22”. Ledger and Mason were very appealing male characters that seemed to live much fuller, experienced lives compared to Cam. Therefore I found it hard to accept the relationship between Ledger and Cam because it was so sudden with no build up. It was great sex, but so. much. sex. I’m not against it I was just missing the build up and get-to-know-ya first!

It was good, but not great. I agree with several other reviewers - there were sex scenes abounding, but it was just a bit soul-less. It was so fast paced that I feel like we didn't really get to know the characters - they were on the two dimentional side instead of well-worked. Even the villian was just insane for the sake of being insane. It was hot, but it got to be where I was wishing they would do something besides have sex on every surface because every time was the same - and "perfection." Nothing messy, no fumbling. Nothing real.

Loved ledger, but adored Cam

This was a first for me from this author and I can honestly say I shall be reading more!

I love being in the here and now, being actually present, however in the book, I think I would have liked a little more background to have been revealed for the characters. That’s not to say they weren’t very well written or less important because they lacked it.

The story line was great, the villain was disgusting (😆) and it was smokin hot in all the right places!

Gorgeous book.

A true second chance book of love

The author has written a story that keeps you glued to it to the very end. Cam the girl in the story has been abused mentally to the point of leaving her abuser. The hero in the story is a man of many facets. He is strong and protective get very sensitive and mindful of his partner. The two friends in the story added a different enjoyable side. Can’t wait to read those stories. The story reaches a part of me that I know is so true #MIN can manipulate women and they do some men. This is a worthwhile read.

This story was intense, but also has a lo e story to tell. Cam has had enough and finally she leaves her boyfriend, but he isn't letting her go so easily. Ledger was struck by something he has never felt before when he meets Cam in his bar 🍸 one night. That start their relationship but he knows she has her self locked in a cage and he is willing to show her how to fly out if that cage to find her true self. This story I go lost in because it's so good. Grab it now.

A Must Read!

So glad Kemmie followed instinct with this book.So many twists and turns,a few occasions when I thought I was coming to the end of the story I discover more twists and another turn. I was totally hooked on every page, enjoying the intensity wondering what will happen next. Totally lost myself in the story line and cannot wait to read the next book. Fantastic talent in writing. Totally recommend anyone to read.

Second Chances

This surprised me for it started slow. Would start at A and then you were at C, wondering what happened to B. Once Ms. Michaels gets momentum, pieces start to come together and you actually get a suspenseful / romantic story. Stick with it, you'll enjoy. Some real surprises unfold. Proofreading was good, overall quality of writing was good, loved the cover, and you get a happy ending.

The story of Ledger (weird name for a mmc) and Cam is sweet and spicy. It was a quick read I got for free in a promo a while back.

Cam and Ledger meet and sparks fly. Her past is rough and his is secerative. They're a bit volatile but it works. The bdsm light was an interesting aspect and written well, though there could have been more explicit consent. I bumped it up to a 4 rather than a 3 because I really enjoyed the side characters as well.
