Obviously, as a contributor and 50% of the Working Classicists team, I’m quite biased but…
In a discipline as staid and conservative as Classics, one which seems to reinforce its Establishment connections rather than cut them, this book is something of a miracle.
More than a hundred writers from state-school backgrounds have contributed to this beginners’ guide to Greek Mythology, and there is such diversity of expression and interpretation that it is genuinely inspiring.
Classics is so synonymous with private schools and “posh” people, that this book forms a terrific riposte to say, “actually, Classics is for everyone”.
So far as I can see, no other book in the discipline has ever given such an opportunity to so many writers from a working class background, and this is its biggest achievement. Not just talking about class, but actually elevating those writers and getting their names into print.
