After leaving everything behind, I thought the quiet of a small mountain town would be the perfect place to start over. As an author, solitude is all I’ve known, and I’m finally starting to feel at home. But then I meet Thoren James—a rugged park ranger with a protective nature and a heart of gold. Along with his loyal dog, Shadow, he offers me a sense of security I didn’t know I needed.
For the first time, I’m starting to believe that I could build a life here. But when ghosts from my past threaten, I realize that healing isn’t as simple as leaving everything behind. Thoren’s strength and the love of this small town are all that stands between me and the chaos I thought I’d escaped. Can I trust that the peace I’ve found is real, or will my past destroy everything I’ve come to love?
Thoren:
The mountains are my home, and my loyal dog, Shadow, has been my best friend since my last relationship. But when I met Lily, something shifted. There’s a softness in her that calls to me, and I want nothing more than to protect her from the world. She’s been through more than I can imagine, and the walls she’s built around herself are so high I wonder if she’ll ever let anyone in.
But I know what it’s like to carry scars—both visible and hidden—and I’m not about to let her face this alone. As we grow closer, I begin to see a future with her, one I didn’t think was possible. Yet, the more I care for her, the more I see I have to help her face the demons in her past.
I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe, even if it means confronting my own fears and letting her see the real me. Because in this small town, I’m not just falling for her—I’m falling for the life we could build together. And nothing is going to take that from me.
If you have wanderlust for the mountains and love a man who loves with acts of service, has an adorable dog, and says deliciously filthy things, this book is for you!

📖: After going through a betrayal, Lily leaves her city life and buys a rundown cabin in a small mountain town to pursue her writing career. She asks for hiking advice from the local ranger, who ends up being none other than her hot neighbor.
Thoren is what book boyfriend dreams are made of!!! He showed up and helped Lily in anyway he could, while also realizing her need for independence and the ability to do things on her own.
Both of the MCs had pasts to work through, and it was lovely to see them open up to each other and be able to lend and accept support. Shadow was the sweetest sidekick and I loved the bond that she shared with thoren & lily!
If you love great text banter between a friend group, this book has it. I was laughing out loud with some of the “Bro’s & Hoe” group chat text threads and they made me even more excited to get to continue the series!!
TLDR: Wandering Closer has so much amazing found family goodness, small town charm and just the right amount of spice paired with the greenest flag MMC.
🌶️ I loved the spice in this book! There was so much tension between these two and once they got together it was explosive!!! The scene with the apple pie and the one in his childhood bedroom will live in my brain RENT FREE! 👏🏼
Thank you so much to the author for the arc of wandering closer in exchange for my honest review!
I loved this book and couldn't put it down!! Lily moves to a small mountain town and does up a run down cabin whilst writing her novel, and she meets Thoren and his cute dog shadow. This spicy little book has everything you'd want to get lost in a book. You can really get invested in the characters and I can't wait to see what Etta is writing next! I definitely feel this would make a great film too.
When Beta reading you expect the book to still need a little tweeking... that was not the case here!
I devoured this book, it envokes all the feels! The characters are so well developed I felt every emotion they were portraying. I was invested in not only the MC but also all their friends, so much so I cannot wait to read the rest of the series to find out what happens with every single character.
The scene is set beautifully in a small mountain town, Lily our gorgeous FMC buys a slightly run down cabin in the outskirts of town with the intent of doing it up, making it her own whilst writing her novel in peace and solitude... but fate has other plans and introduces her to the unbelievably sexy Thoren who just happens to be an adorable sweetheart and completely irresistible.... and the adventures begin!
I couldn't put this down and I very strongly suggest giving it a go!!
Oh Thoren & Lily….to have been a Lily in this story would be a dream come true Thoren has had his heart stomped on….when he loves he loves big & all the way to his soul….his best friend is his dog Shadow…she’s truly his ride or die….she sees the good & the bad in people….great pup instincts & when Shadow meets Lily it’s love at first sniff
Lily & Thoren had their heart being stomped on in common but Lily was a little more guarded….crushed more than once by her parents & again by a man she loved & she thought loved her….the fortress around her heart was going to take effort to tear down…
Fortunately when Lily ran from her past she found herself hundreds of miles from home & in a small town….top priority was learning to be the woman she always wanted to be & loving herself again in the process….little did she know her personality was the type that draws people in & the right ones see her worth….in Cedar Ridge she found some really great people…fast friends that turn out to be more like family…. moving across country to a small town was what Lily needed as a sports romance author to give her some inspiration & a quiet place to write….it helped that the view from her back porch was beautiful….especially when Thoren & Shadow popped up out of the trees….those two being neighbors a happy coincidence or meant to be???
But is Thoren the one??? Can he help break down the walls that Lily has built up around her??? & can Lily learn to trust again??? If you love a good friends to lovers, he falls first & hard, found family, touch her & well you know give this one a read….its the first in the series & we already got the heads up on who the next book is about….I can’t wait to see how their story plays out & what Thoren & Lily have planned in the future
This book has all the feels— ALL of them! I was crying by the end. Fantastic storyline by Etta Lane. By the first few chapters, I was drooling over the imagery & descriptive writing.
Thoren is the most perfect book boyfriend I think you could ask for. Even when you’re mad at him, he’s still good. Men written by women, am I right? Thoren checks all the boxes… caring, extremely thoughtful, best doggie companion ever, and the list goes on.
Lily is the star of the show in this book, and I am so glad to have been along for her journey of self-growth. A lot of times, I think self-growth in the narrators of books can get too preachy for a reader. I am impressed with the depth & well-roundedness Lily’s character had! She is an emotionally fragile girl turned bad bitch by the end!
This is such a wholesome read of “Found Family.” WAY too many moments what will warm your heart. You get to watch Lily learn that sometimes, family is what you make yourself, not what you are given.
The ending is fantastic, and I loved the heart-racing tension at the end of the book without the “ugh” feeling of a third act breakup.
I’ll be sticking around for Book 2, and hope to be apart of the ARC team once again. Thank you Etta, for sharing your story with me! (Time to buy a book trophy!)
If you’re looking for a book that’ll have you grinning like an idiot, fanning yourself, and possibly naming your next pet “Shadow,” Wandering Closer is it.
Lily, our gorgeous and slightly battered FMC, escapes to a small mountain town for some much-needed solitude, planning to fix up a rundown cabin and write her novel in peace. But the universe (bless its chaotic soul) has other plans—enter Thoren. Sexy, sweet, and a walking green flag with a filthy mouth, this man is everything you’d want in a book boyfriend. Oh, and did I mention he has a dog? Instant win.
The chemistry? Off the charts. The friendships? Absolute goals. The emotional rollercoaster? Buckle up. Etta weaves humor, heartache, and just the right amount of spice into a feel-good romance that’ll have you turning pages like your life depends on it.
Whether you’re here for the small-town charm, the slow-burn tension, or the downright adorable cast of characters (seriously, even the side characters deserve their own books), Wandering Closer delivers. Mark your calendar for February 28th and add this gem to your TBR—because once you start, you won’t be putting it down.
"To the ones who saw the red flags, and stayed anyway. Don't settle for less than you deserve. You are enough."
Lily is starting over and moves to a quiet, small town in the mountains. She's an author, so she's used to the solitude. Just when she thinks she's feeling right at home, in comes Thoren, a park ranger with an adorable dog💞 Now her past is sneaking up on her and again and she's torn between choosing trust and playing it safe.
Thoren has had his own share of heartbreak and lives with his loyal dog. That's all he's ever known since his last relationship. When he first sees Lily, all he wants to do is protect her.
This book was so stinking beautiful🥹🥹💞💞 Thoren is such a sweetheart, and I absolutely adored how good he was to Lily.
The dedication was so touching and heartfelt🥹🥹 I was tearing up before I even started the book🤣💞 The author did such a wonderful job capturing all of the emotions and making this such a captivating read.
Tropes: 💞He falls first 💞Small town romance 💞Found family 💞Friends to lovers
Lily needs a fresh starts and moving directly next to te hunky forest ranger is the right choice.
I loved them as a couple. I went through a messy break up with my narc ex and my partner was there through it all, even when I told him he didn't deserve to have to deal with my drama and baggage. He told me I was talking nonsense and was so dang supportive. And I love that for Lily too.
Loved the walnut analogy.
It was nice to see her follow through with her "revenge" and it ended well. That doesn't happen often. Even in books.
And my final thought is, sure she overreacted near the end, but if she hadn't all that drama wouldn't have ensued. She did it for the plot and I can't fault her for that !
Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to ARC read this title !
Lily and Thoren’s chemistry? Absolutely electric! From the banter to the hilarious group chats, I was laughing non-stop. And let’s talk about the spice—HOT AS HELL! Holy moly, Thoren had me swooning, but his friend and brother? Yeah, they’re definitely giving him competition.
This contemporary romance delivers on every level—great plot, sizzling tension, and major fire starting midway through. If you love a romance that makes you laugh, blush, and fan yourself, this one’s a must-read!🔥
I got to be a Beta Reader for this and loved it! If you have ever watched a Hallmark movie and thought, man I wish this had better character development and some really delightful open door spice scenes? Welcome to Cedar Ridge! The main and supporting characters are complex and extremely fun. You will fall in love with Lily and swoon over Thoren. Enjoy!
this book… remember when they made really good romance movies (how to lose a guy in 10 days, sweet home alabama, etc.) this book is that vibe + some! i couldn’t put it down once i started, i laughed out loud, i smiled throughout the whole book, such an amazing feel good romance book!!
the character development, the MMC + FMC 🤌🏼 perfect, the friendships, a dog, the spicy scenes, ALL OF IT was perfectly blended into a wonderful small town romance story!
Etta Lane, thank you so much for allowing me to be an ARC reader of your book! I stand by what i think, you will be the next author everyone on book tok is posting about. i cannot wait for the rest of the series!
Idk it could just be me, I’ve had an off month. Don’t let my opinion deter you, I think this book has the potential I really think it’s just not for me right now.
Lily is escaping a life of failure and regret, deciding to move to a small cabin in the forest of Washington. Thoren is trudging along in his life as usual, working and existing without much to look forward to, until he crosses paths with Lily and his entire life turns on its head.
*****
I really wanted to love this one, but I genuinely struggled with the insta-love aspect. Thoren is addicted from the first moment he meets Lily, and it's done in a way that I struggled to relate to. He's a simp for her, but in a patriarchal way, which gave me pause more than a few times. He has an obsession with taking care of Lily, and inserts himself into her life and guides her. Which would be hot, but it felt very paternal instead and rubbed me the wrong way. Him recognizing she didn't get any praise or appreciation in her life and laying it on thick with the intent that she had a hidden praise kink felt off as well because it was more manipulative than natural.
From there, the dialogue skewed to be a bit too cheesy and stilted for me. The characters are sweet and likeable and caring, they just often go on long-winded paragraphs of on the wrong side of overly enthusiastic. Thoren has so many pep talks of adoration and devotion that it got to be like alright dude, rein it in, let the girl process for a minute. Reading every diatribe he had for her instead of a normal conversation was just so odd. It felt like he was parenting her instead of partnering her. In general he fell too fast and too hard and it felt like a borderline creepy level.
He wanted Lily to move in rapidly and was constantly imaging her pregnant. He even brought it up before they even had any declarations of love. Thinking fondly of the nursery the first time he showed her his house. Just down bad for her at home, making his meals and having his kids. Which also made the book not set well for me. The characters both fell into standardized gender roles a little too hard. He's the big strong caretaker that goes out and does manual labour and saves people, and she stays home and writes romance and makes all of his meals and tidies up so when he comes home he can praise her and get laid. The characters were of course content in that relationship, but she went from a woman finding herself to someone to keep his bed warm and cook his meals and I just couldn't find myself enjoying it. He even brings up her one day becoming a mom while she's recovering in the hospital and it's like dude, read the room?
From there we get a quick resolution of the main conflict (although Michele assaulting Tyler's wife was unnecessary and ridiculous) and then rapid jumps in time and their relationship until the HEA. Overall the love was too instant, the relationship was too gender-normative, and the ending was too rushed.

Thank you to the author for the digital ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was such an incredibly cute book! From the beginning, I loved everything about it. When I think of an ooey gooey romance book, this is the definition of that. From the characters, to the story, to the pup, to the town, and to the budding romance, all of it came together to form a beautiful story.
From the beginning of the book, it is easy to tell that Lily is a kind soul that went through a rough situation. You could feel the kindness bleeding from her on every page. It wasn’t just in the way she spoke to and about others, but also in the way she saw when people were hurting without them even speaking a word. To see her character development throughout this book was beautiful! Gone is the shy, unsure woman she was when she arrived in town; in her place stands a radiant woman that will stand up for herself and what she believes in.
Which leads me to say that I believe Thoren is the perfect man for her. Since their first meeting, he saw all of her. The hurt, the beauty, the strength, the care, all of it, and actively chose her over and over again. Thoren was respectful and didn’t pursue anything past friendship until Lily showed and said she was ready. Even then, he let her control the pace at which they went, always respected her and her choices, and loved her unconditionally. He is also such a caring and loving man to those in his town. He checks in on his friends, makes sure his brother is well, visits his parents frequently, and is quite literally saving lives on every SAR mission.
One thing I also really enjoyed about this book is that there was depth to it, both inside and outside of the romance. Inside the romance, we saw how Thoren and Lily each respected one another boundaries and pasts. Yes, this should be the bare minimum, but the care and love in which they did it was executed beautifully. Lily made sure Thoren knew he was her first and only choice, not to be overshadowed by anyone else or walked on. Thoren made sure Lily saw her own strength and helped her regain her confidence after such a hard past relationship. Together they helped bring out the best in one another and see it themselves. Outside of the romance, I am so happy that Lily got justice and Tyler got his karma. I found that part of the storyline very entertaining and intriguing, especially since everything turned out in Lily’s favor (as it should).
Overall, this was such a cute story! For the gushy romance lovers that love that giddy feeling, this one is for you. I recommend!

"Every day, I feel like I am wandering closer to a future that I’ve always dreamed of. One where I can pursue my passion, feel alive, and be surrounded by people who truly see me and love me all the same."
Overall: ⭐⭐.5 / 5 (rounded up) Spice: 🌶️🌶️ / 5
This is a sweet, meandering story that hits some lovely high notes along the way. Thoren is a green flag man, despite his stumbles here and there. Lily is finding her strength and family, overcoming her own challenges of love and life. There’s also a little bit of baseball, a furry companion, and plenty of wood chopping. This book has all the makings of a fabulous small town romance and I’ve no doubt many readers will appreciate it!
It took me longer than I expected to read, namely because I had a hard time connecting to the characters. They felt a little too much like models of an "ideal" romance story and not real humans. Some of the dialogue was stilted and overly verbose, which felt difficult to imagine in the moment. People breathe and shift and stumble over their words, ya know? Especially when they're passionate about something.
I also struggled with Lily’s race because it was mentioned off-handedly but didn’t seem to play a role otherwise (though perhaps it was meant to in the caricature of her parents? which honestly would be even worse…). The “villains” were truly awful people, to such an extent that they didn’t bring much tension. For as much plot as there was, it fell flat at times and could’ve been quite a bit shorter.
The spice scenes were open door and descriptive, with Thoren flipping a switch from golden retriever to growly and demanding. While hot in moments, it also didn't feel genuine.
I will say I’m intrigued enough by the side characters to want to see their HEAs, so I’ll probably circle back to future books in the Wanderland series someday.

I am grateful to the author to have received an eARC of this story (even though this review is late)! This is my honest and unbiased review.
Where to even begin. I'm not sure there are enough words to explain the literal perfection that is Wandering Closer. This book had me squealing and kicking my feet the entire way through. The connection between Lily and Thoren is apparent from their first interaction. The fact that they both flirt without meaning too had me laughing. Both Lily and Thoren have recently gotten out of toxic relationships and are guarded when it comes to starting something new. Lily more so than Thoren, however that doesn't stop their pull towards each other. Thoren does a great job of giving Lily the support and understanding she needs to heal from the life she left behind while she finds herself in the small mountain town of Cedar Ridge. This man is the ultimate book boyfriend with the perfect mix of sweet and spice. The things that come out of Thoren's mouth... whew, you would not expect them, but they make his character all the more appealing. Thoren's communication is top notch. His ability to express what he wants and how he feels, while still making Lily feel like she has a choice is everything. Lily is the sweetest ever. Her ability to see Thoren and make sure that someone puts him first for once shows the way they compliment each other. The way we get to watch Lily grow into herself throughout the story is exciting and she truly deserves all the love that comes her way. Shadow is the cutest dog and the best wing woman through this book drawing Lily and Thoren closer to each other. The friends and family that surround Thoren and Lily with their love and support are the perfect addition to the story and bring in the extra humor making this story even better. Especially the boys group chat. This is the type of book you can easily get lost in and forget you are reading altogether. The pace that the story is set flows perfectly and doesn't feel drawn out. Etta Lane does a great job of bringing all the best aspects of a romance novel into one book. The way she writes reminded me of why I fell in love with reading again. I know that if I ever feel like I am in a reading slump, I will be reaching for one of Etta Lane's books. I did not want this story to end and I cannot wait to dive into the next book in this series when it comes out.
This small town romance with spice was so entertaining to read. Lily and Thoren’s love story is the typical small town romance that is seen in most Hallmark Movies. Lily moves to the small town trying to start over after a trying time in her life and is not looking for love. Thoren, who is the sexy bachelor in town, falls head over heels in love with the new girl in town. Their love story is not without a few hiccups, but they do get their happily ever after.
This story has some spice and a few dark themes, but overall is a great story. The spice does not take away from the overall love story theme that was intended. Both Lily and Thoren have had relationships that have not gone the way that they thought they would in the past. Together they find that each other was what they were looking for. Thoren is there when Lily needs someone to lean on and Lily is there for Thoren in ways that he did not know he would find.
Lily came to a new city in the middle of nowhere to start over and move on with her life. She was not looking for love, but once she starts to get to know the man next door all bets were off. Thoren can tell that she has some baggage that came with her, but he is willing to try to unpack it all. Lily needed a support system to help her with all the baggage that she come with and this new small town is exactly what she needed. She has never had many friends, but finds many in this new town. Also her family has not been very supportive in the past, but she finds a new “family” who support her to the end of the earth.
Some of the dark themes that are in this book revolve around cheating, verbal threats, and some physical abuse. If these are triggers for you, know that they are here, but are not a large part of the story.
I am looking forward to see where this series goes. I want to see all happily ever after’s to come!
Lily, an author escaped her life and bought a run down cabin in the woods . The reason for her leaving definitely was a mystery I couldn’t wait to unravel..
I enjoyed their friendship , Thoren constantly offered support, comfort and reassurance. It wasn’t all giving Lily was there to help care for Shadow , his dog and cooked meals . Something Thoren wasn’t used to as he was burned by love in the past. The coffee on the deck mornings was so wholesome . Seeing their relationship blossom to more was beautiful , again Thoren let Lily set the pace and made comfortable with every decision . Lily took a while to feel confident within herself but with Thor by her side she knew she held all the power. She knew her worth and I loved that!
The pacing was perfect , nothing was rushed and this book had great character development ! There was plenty of funny moments and banter while also delivering heartfelt moments .. Etta Lane really know how to draw every emotion out of us readers .
Thoren was a total green flag ! He fell first and hard . “ I’ll wait for her , you know? To be ready .” Oh gosh Thoren you did not just say that ! My heart melted . He might be a gentleman but Thor definitely knew how to put his hammer to use!! Oh myyyyyy 🥵
I love texts and emails conversations in a book so when I saw the group chat texts I ate it up! The communication between the lads was so funny! They were great side characters. I can’t wait for their books !!
That ending ,awwww the ending! I smiled and I had tears !! It was beautiful Etta ripped my heart and stitched it back again! 💔❤️
“Relax, I’ve got you now.”
“ Tell me to stop” .. “Please don’t “
“ You can have real and genuine friends anywhere . You just need to find your people. I found mine “ I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU LILY
✨ Thank you Etta Lane for the opportunity to read this beautiful arc in return for an honest review ✨
This book is pure perfection!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and 🌶🌶.5, Etta Lang took me on a wild adventure full of all the emotions you could think of with a sweet fury four-legged friend to keep me company. Etta Lang did a phenomenal job writing a story that made me feel all the emotions while also putting spice into the story that fit so perfectly. The progression of each character as the story went on made me love them and feel invested in their well-being. The fact that this book takes place in my home state and I could instantly picture the beautiful locations made this story come more alive for me and put me in their world. Thoren, the absolute gorgeous mountain man MMC, has the sweetest heart, genuine and caring. He wants everyone in his world to be happy and feel supported. He has a small fortune but is so quiet and humble about it. He is a broken man who was not looking for love until it found him. Lily, this sweet FMC from Phoenix, moved to Washington State to start again, find herself, and see just what she is made of. The last thing she wanted was a man to complicate her world, and she did everything she could to keep those walls up. She had to fight some of the hardest battles and learn the hardest lessons life can offer, and with all of that, Lily came out stronger than ever. Family is not always by blood. Leave it to the best supporting character that is not even human to bring these two together. Shadow makes this story so much more in all the ways that you could imagine and more. This is absolutely a top 3 book for me for 2025. If you want a book where he falls first, and will do anything for her, and she works to discover what she is capable of, and stands against those who would break her, then you MUST read Wandering Closer. You won't be disappointed. Happy Reading! 😊
It’s truly surprising that this is only Etta’s SECOND novel. I was lucky enough to be a part of ARC teams for both.
Us readers are lucky that Wandering Closer is the first in a new series, called the Wanderland Series, because this is just the beginning. The FMC and MMC are both extremely sweet, caring, and nurturing individuals, but not annoyingly so. The fact that their characters are complex with their own baggage helps to build a more believable, multi-faceted character.
The first time Thoren lays eyes on Lily in his small mountain town of Cedar Ridge, their chemistry struck him like a lightning bolt to the heart, and he knew he had to meet her. Even though Lily wasn’t ready for a new relationship, Thoren stuck by her side, becoming her closest friend until she realized that she was just as in love with him as he was her.
Thoren and Lily both carried past hurts from previous relationships but didn’t allow those to drive them apart. They seemed to heal each other’s broken pieces by simply allowing the other to be themselves and feel secure, even though both had plenty of insecurities.
Throw in the fact that Thoren is devastatingly handsome, book boyfriend dreams, a cinnamon roll/golden retriever type with a devilishly filthy mouth, and you had me at hello. And we can’t forget the sweetest black lab pup, of which he allows Lily shared custody.
All the supporting characters are extremely likeable and the found family trope in this book is truly felt throughout the entire novel. I’m just as excited to read about the other characters finding their happily ever after, too.
If you’re also a sucker for a small-town romance set in the mountains, where he falls first, friends become lovers, with forced proximity, then you’ll love Wandering Closer.
I’ve had the incredible honor to alpha read Wandering Closer, book 1 in Etta Lane’s newest series: The Wanderland Series. Seeing this book come to life from start to finish has been an absolute blast and I could not be prouder of Etta.
Wandering Closer introduces us to Lily, Thoren, and an incredible cast of family and friends who you will absolutely fall in love with. And we can’t forget Thoren’s trusty dog, Shadow. Lily, new in town after escaping to Cedar Ridge, meets her new neighbor, Thoren and the two develop an easy-going and sweet friendship. Lily is running from some demons in her past, and Thoren had his heart destroyed with his last relationship. Will the two of them be able to break down each other’s walls and give in to their attraction, or will their pasts come back to haunt them and doom their blossoming kinship?
This book is full of laughs, tears, and AMAZING friendships. Honestly, this group of characters that Etta has introduced to us are so lovable, funny, and just down-right feel good people. Absolute friendship goals. The push and pull between Thoren and Lily will have you turning page after page and feeling all of the feels. Thoren is the ultimate book boyfriend, and the most perfect cinnamon roll golden retriever with the dirtiest mouth. He is one giant walking green flag and hello.. he has a dog. 🥹
Wandering Closer comes out February 28th and I urge you to immediately add this book to your TBR. I promise that you’ll fall in love with this series as much as I have. Thank you again, Etta! 💜
ARC Review! This book y’all!!!! I love the growth Lily goes through and how patient Thoren is with her. I laughed, I cried, and I squealed as these two fell in love.
Lily moves to a small mountain town to start fresh after her ex gets her fired from the job she doesn’t like. Her parents had a set plan for her but it’s not what Lily wants. All she wants to write her novels and live in peace. Not long after moving into her cabin, she meets Thoren. He’s a park ranger who’s fiercely protective of his loved ones and a total sweetheart. Thoren is moving on after having his broken by his ex but he’s not going through it alone; he has his best girl Shadow to help him heal. Thoren instantly knows there’s something about Lily that has him constantly thinking about her. The two finally bare their souls to one another and a relationship blooms into something beautiful, but is their relationship strong enough to survive when Lily’s past shows up at her door?
The chemistry between Lily and Thoren? So good! The friendships and found family? The absolute best! A precious furry doggy? One you’ll want to jump into the story to pet and play with! The emotions? All over the place!
If you’re a fan of small mountain town, found family, spice, he falls first, and forced proximity, then this is the book for you! You’ll fall in love with all the characters and find yourself a new book boyfriend to add to the list as well as a new fictional place you’ll want to escape to!
I received this ARC from a newer author and wasn’t sure what to expect. I can tell you that I couldn’t put it down.
The FMC Lily is a little on the hesitant side dare I say neurotic but rightfully so with how her past was however the MMC has a little of those tendencies too which makes them mesh SO well together.
I would say the spice is medium compared to other books I have read. Everything to me seemed very balanced even timing. The supporting characters are also very well written. I want these friends in my life for sure. The story flows just right. If you’ve been reading long you will be able to pick up on a few things ahead of time for sure.
The fact that this is going to be a series that follows all of the characters in this first book makes me very happy. When it comes to character development the author did tremendous. As for world building I FELT like I was there. When I was reading it took me from my reality to that small town in her cabin. The detail was not overwhelming at all. Which of course is what you want a book to do.
While my life is nowhere near horrible I find myself wanting this life of Lily’s. I truly can’t wait to see where this series goes and I hope I get the pleasure of doing another ARC with this author. ❤️
This book releases Feb 28th and I recommend you add it to your TBR
“Couples fight honey, but a love like yours doesn’t fade. It can’t be suppressed or concealed, it’s an unbreakable bond that lasts a lifetime.”
This book honestly gave me all the feels! I think what touched me most is the raw, wholesome, found family aspect of the book.
The chemistry between Lily and Thoren never felt forced or unnatural. From their first meet the tension was palpable. Lily was the sweetest FMC. Despite all the hardships and heart break she previously went through, she was so willing to open her mind and heart to all the new people she was meeting within the town. I really admired her adaptability throughout the book. Thoren was the perfect book boyfriend! Lily and her needs came first always. Even if it seemed like something out of reach he was determined to get it done for her. DID I MENTION HE HAS THE SWEETEST BLACK LAB?? Shadow gets brought up numerous times throughout the book and my dog mom heart loved it!
All of the side characters were so unique and truly wonderful! I really enjoyed watching bits of their story throughout. I am SO excited for the next book and to see how Jake’s story plays out!
All in all, this was a very endearing and enjoyable read! I would recommend to all my book besties who love small town romances, swoon worthy MMCs and found family trope!
Thank you so much to the author for the ARC of this book! 🫶🏻
Wandering Closer, by Etta Lane, is a nice friends-to-lovers romance with a HEA. It is also the first book in the Wanderland series. This is my introduction to Etta, and I am very excited to continue with this series and see where it goes.
The book follows the main characters, Lily and Thoren. Lily leaves everything behind and heads to a small mountain town to start over. She wants to focus on her writing career and forget the past. Just when she begins to get settled, the past creeps in and threatens her happiness.
Thoren is a park ranger and a dog dad to Shadow. He lives close to the new stranger, and he and Shadow are very interested in getting to know her. Lily is not the only one trying to escape their past relationship; Thoren, too, is trying to start over. Seeing that Lily needs help with her run-down cabin, he offers to help!
Could Thoren be more perfect?! Gah! I’m head over heels for this book boyfriend! I’m completely smitten. I am so happy with Lily’s growth and development in this book. With the help of Thoren and those around her, she blossoms. I loved the found family aspect of this book. The side characters are unforgettable, and I hope to see them in the next book in the series!!
Thanks to Etta Lane for gifting me an eARC of Wandering Closer. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is the absolute pick-me-up necessary to remind you that you are capable, you are loved, and you can win even when it feels impossible.
Lily is the quintessential ‘lost but finding herself again’ FMC who will continue to make you fall in love with her AND yourself throughout the book. Thoren, MMC, is the book boyfriend and dog daddy every girl dreams about having IRL (I have one just like him, he’s the best!). And Shadow, the best pup in the world who radiates “main character energy” with her bravery and love for her humans.
If you’re seeking an emotional bandaid for your broken, betrayed or damaged heart, this is a must read. If you’re a woman scorned by a man named Tyler, this is absolutely a must read (been there, divorced that, and felt really, REALLY validated by his ending in this book!) as the group chat starting chapter 35 will bring you laughter you didn’t know you needed.
Small-town, he falls first, sweet and spicy romance, and amazing side characters with unfinished stories that make you want to finish the entire series before it’s even started (no pressure Etta) due to their made-family dynamic that will give you all the ‘warm and fuzzies’ you didn’t know you needed.

Lily is such a beautifully written, well-thought-out character. From the moment we meet her, we know she’s trying to get away. What she doesn’t expect is to find solace in the arms of Thoren and the paws of Shadow.
Not gonna lie, the beginning took me a bit to warm up to, but once I hit the middle, I was hooked. I’m not always the biggest fan of an emotionally secure man (because let’s be real, my reads tend to lean a little toxic), but somehow, Thoren pulled me out of my reading slump and into his world. He had his cringy moments (seriously, why do I like messed-up men?), but I loved how he loved Lily—faults and all.
The only reason this isn’t a full 5 stars is the pacing—it took me a while to get truly invested, and there were some filler scenes that, while they added to the plot, didn’t feel necessary.
But hands down, my favorite part? The girlhood between Lily, Michele, and Amber. I love a good found family moment, and their friendship had me laughing one second and on the edge of tears the next.
(And I need Michele’s story ASAP—she’s an absolute spitfire!)
If you’re looking for a book that gives you those warm, cozy feelings, this is a solid pick. The spice? A light 2/5.
I have read Etta previously, but after this book I can say she is up there as one of my favorite authors! You can feel this town, as if it is right in front of you, with the way she wrote it. I always say small town romance is the way to go, and Thoren and Lily’s story continues to solidify that thought for me.
Lily is strength personified. You read so many characters that go through hardships, but going through those and scared of how new people in your life will feel about you after finding out is why she tried to crave independence. She found a town, a found family though, that wouldn’t let her go through her issues alone. I loved how much give and take she gave to those newly in her life. She equally wanted to be just as helpful for them as they were for her.
Thoren is DELICIOUS, and easily makes me want to learn the proper way to hike through the woods🤣 One of the best things about him is need to serve others. His instant connection with Lily had her easily added to those he would continue to care for. He is just lucky his adorable dog is what hooked Lily in before she let her guard down! connection with Lily had her easily added to those he would continue to care for. This is the second ARC from Etta and this is my personal opinion of the book! Lily is a sweet girl who is wronged in a work place and by her family. She leaves to the mountains where she plans on writing sports romance alone. She is looking for peace and quiet. To find herself without all the expectations of her parents. She moves to this small mountain side town and meet people who she turns to family. Michele is her real estate agent who turns to her best friend! Jake is the man Michele has Lily hit up for furniture. Everyone is intertwined with reached in this town! Thoren is a Forest Ranger who Lily meets when she goes to question about trails and hiking! He instantly can’t stop thinking of her. When they find out they are neighbors he helps her fix her cabin she bought. He also happens to be best friends with Jake and Michele! He finds out why Lily left Arizona and will do anything in his power to help her out. This is a story of the heart not just of love but of lasting self worth and love! It’s about needing to know you are enough and do what is right for you! I loved this story as much as Safe with Us and I can’t wait for the next story! Thank you for your beautiful work!
I couldn't put this book down, I loved it. It will give you ALL of the feels, it's got good spice, not to mention a book boyfriend MMC that dreams are made of. Etta Lane has outdone herself with the character development and scene setting. I felt as though I was transported to this tranquil little mountain town alongside Lily and Thoren and their friends.
Lily's story is beautifully written and I enjoyed reading about her journey. I think we can all relate to Lily as she has gone through some hard times and is starting fresh and getting back to the best version of herself. Once you start reading about Thoren, you can't not have heart eyes for him...he is caring, thoughtful, protective but lets Lily be independent, not to mention so so spicy in the bedroom. (swoooooon)
The "found family" in this book is so lovely and wholesome. I can't wait to read about all of the other characters and their stories. I honestly don't know who's story I am most excited to read, probably Jake's because I just love his grumpy teddybear vibe so much.
I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to ARC read this book, I hope to remain on the team because not only do I love these characters, but Etta Lane is the sweetest and such a fun author to work with!
