Epic Fantasy

" To all those who fight to be seen, heard, and respected simply because of the way you were born, this book is for you. I see you "

👸No Spice

Reluctant Queen. Long lost -True King. And a Kingdom on the edge of a war that could change everything.

When Seraphina is thrust onto the throne of Elmoria, she’s forced to play the deadly game of war and politics. As an ancient magic stirs and alliances shift, she must decide who to trust - before the crown costs her everything.

When I read the blurb for A War of Crowns, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it because it sounded like something I would love. I ended up liking it but, may take a few more books in the series to get me excited. It had that “first book in an epic” feel, where you’re left wishing you had book two for the momentum.

I thought it had good world building, and I liked the mature feel of the story is some areas, but I did struggle at times with the pacing. It does start out a little slow, and with all the layers it felt heavy and I found myself wishing things would move along. As I read, it picked up a little. There were also lots of POVs at the start, and while at first it did seem daunting, I ended up being able to follow them way better than I thought I would.

Seraphina the FMC, was written as a 30 year old queen, but she didn’t always feel her age. Her inner dialogue reminded me a lot, at times of a YA character, and I had to keep reminding myself she is supposed to be 30. The Crow , the MMC- is going to have to grow on me, I think once he starts letting his guard down, he will become more likable. Then there was the romance between the two, it was a super slow subtle burn- while the beginnings of emotion is there, I kept waiting for a turning point that never came. (I have to keep telling myself This is the first book , be patient 😅) so if you are like me and like at least a little romance, just know there’s not much YET.

Overall, I thought the political intrigue was interesting, along with the mystery of some of the characters, and the rise of the ancient magic was enough to keep me interested and I will probably read the next one to see where things go!

✨Spoiler-Free Review✨
A War of Crowns by Ashley Willingham
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Short Summary 📜
When Seraphina suddenly becomes Elmoria’s first ruling queen, centuries of peace shatter overnight. Thrust into war, political intrigue, and divine magic… she must fight to protect her people, even as dark forces rise. 👑⚔️

My Thoughts 💭
I loved this book!! Seraphina’s character was so real and I loved learning alongside her as she figured out how to be queen. Her court was full of incredible side characters (her godparents + best friend = my fave 💕), and even though the romance thread is just starting, there were still moments that made me swoon 🫠 and broke my heart 💔.

This story throws you right into the action, shifting between Seraphina, her enemies, and the warfront so you get the full picture. Even with 12 POVs, it was super easy to follow, and the worldbuilding was rich yet accessible. By chapter 7 my jaw was on the floor 😱 and I stayed hooked until the very last page.

The world and creatures were so fun to discover! 🐍 The story does feature witches, but they aren’t glorified or portrayed in the typical way. Instead, they’re more like beings with superhuman abilities. Think breathing fire and wielding raw power rather than practicing spells (at this point at least). I know witches are not some people’s thing so I wanted to mention it 🫶

If you love political intrigue, slow SLOW-burn romance, and fantasy that’s easy to sink into, you need to add this one to your TBR ASAP.
This book is free of swear words, spice, and graphic violence. ⚔️
Note: While there is violence given the genre, it is not with any graphic detail.

Book 2 comes out in December and I cannot wait! 🥳📚

Wha to expect: Adult Christian epic fantasy, political intrigue, high stakes, dwarfism rep, royalty, multi-POV, SLOW burn, enemies to ???

This was really good, imo. The only thing keeping me from giving it five stars is that I had a difficult time getting into it the first 100 pages with so many POVs to start with. After that point, I was invested in the political intrigue and the characters’ story lines. I thought the world was well done. There were definitely elements that were refreshing to see in adult fantasy. Seraphina was a great leading FMC, and I’m excited to see the growth with the MMC in the next book. The enemies were TRUE enemies for basically the whole book, and I love a good slow burn that’s extremely slow. Since this is Christian fantasy, you can expect a monotheistic faith to the Lord on High to be woven into the story and dark magic to be what the villains use. I got mysterious vibes throughout the twists and turns. I will definitely pick up the next book in this series.

spice level - none at all
language - none
content - typical fantasy violence with war, murder, violence, and injuries (nothing graphic), witchcraft (depicted as bad), side character talks crudely (depicted as bad)

Female-lead fantasy done right!

It took me a minute to get into this book due to the multiple characters, but I think having all the viewpoints was important to get the full picture of the situation and to start the world-building. Once I did finally get into the story, I was hooked! The main characters were flawed but likeable and although they made some bad choices, they made sense within the context of story. I like when the characters are gritty and tough without being unnecessarily crass and crude.

There is obvious good vs evil, but flawed characters within both of those dichotomies.

This is an adult book with difficult topics, but the violence isn't overly descriptive or gratuitous. It has a purpose within the story and is not just for entertainment.

I will be finishing the series for sure.

A War of Crowns is the first book in an epic fantasy trilogy. It has echoes of Spark of the Everflame and Game of Thrones BUT it has no explicit content or profanity. It starts out with many POVs and then settles into two primary POVs. The story is fast paced, and I love that all the characters are unique with unique dreams, abilities, struggles, and physical appearances. This was such a refreshing and fun fantasy! As soon as I finished this book, I ordered the next one!

The story centers around Seraphina, the queen of Elmoria. Her kingdom is being attacked by various enemies, and she must make a deal with a man she detests to save her people. She faces imposters, betrayals, and a court of intrigue to keep her throne and her heart intact.

👑 This is for you if you enjoy:
❤️ Found family
😍 Enemies to more enemies
🥰 Characters with physical disabilities
👑 Political intrigue
⚔️ Fantasy with epic stakes
🙏🏻 Characters who pray

(4.5) Review of A War of Crowns by Ashley Willingham.
No spice Romantasy. Multiple POVs.

I really enjoyed this story of Queen Seraphina who has to make hard decisions to save her people.

I will highly suggest to read the novella of Edith and Percy before jumping into this book. Their story was an excellent read as well and will make much more sense of who they are and how they fit into Sera’a life.

This is a multiple pov story and you need to concentrate throughout the book to not loose track or get confused. It’s also not a short story, so be prepared to jump into and get a lot of information.

I personally enjoyed the Crow and I think he is misjudged. There is a side to him that we have not yet seen and I can’t wait for the second book to see what their relationship holds.

I love the writing style of Ashley. It’s not difficult to read and understand which made this long book enjoyable to read.

There are many unanswered questions and I look forward to reading the sequel.

I liked the different view this book took the traditional romantasy genre with the addition of Christian elements. I was pleasantly surprised with the diverse representation of characters. These differences give the characters more depth, while doing it in a respectful manner. The start of this book felt slow with the amount of world building and the number characters being introduced. The book got better and easier to follow as you read on. The last ~40% of this book was amazing, and a GREAT setup for the next book and the rest of the series. I can't wait to start the next book, and I think I will like it better than book one.

A War of Crowns definitely lived up to my expectations! Even though the romance was minimal ( and I need my romance), I was still completely hooked, constantly on the edge of my seat, eager to see what would happen next. The multiple points of view took a bit of time to get used to at first, and learning about all the different locations was a challenge, at first as well. However, by the time I hit the halfway mark, I really started to grasp the story, and that’s when I knew I was FULLY invested!

The romance is a slow burn, which is perfect for anyone who loves an enemies-to-lovers dynamic. Keep in mind that this is part of a trilogy, so to fully see how everything unfolds, you'll need to stick with all three books. But this is a fantastic introduction, and I’m certain the wait will be worth it. I’m especially hoping that in the next book, we’ll see more development between Seraphina and Aldric’s relationship. I know it will take time, but their banter is too good to miss, and they start as true enemies! I can’t wait to see how their chemistry grows throughout the series.

So, what's this story about?
Aldric, a one-eyed dwarf who was estranged from his family and presumed dead for 15 years, has a reputation for murder. He’s responsible (alongside his sons) for countless deaths. And he has even been branded a monster, even by his own kin. On the other hand, Seraphina is the new queen, trying to forge alliances to save her kingdom from those who are waging war against it. But when her best option for an alliance means agreeing to marry the enemy, will she make the sacrifice for her people? And what if there’s more to the alliance than it first appears?

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones or enjoy stories with rival kingdoms, magic, and political intrigue, this is definitely a book for you. With a great cast of side characters, both good and bad, and all the ongoing wars and alliances in the background, it’s a true page-turner!

I received a complimentary copy, this review reflects my honest opinion.

A War of Crowns is an epic fantasy full of intrigue, magic, and interesting creatures. It is the first book in The War of Crowns Saga, taking place in a medieval fantasy world where several nations are locked in a struggle for power. While this is considered an enemies to lovers fantasy romance, the romance elements are minimal. I imagine that will come out more in the next installment.

This is my second read from indie author Ashley Willingham, and once again, I was captivated by her beautiful writing and immersive world building. I also appreciate how her main male characters don't fit the typical mold we usually see for leading men in fantasy/romance books. It's a refreshing change of pace.

From the very start, the story pulls the reader right into the action with a fantastic opening chapter. While, there were a few moments where the pacing slowed, it never took long to get back into the excitement. The characters are fun and well written, each bringing something unique to the table.

I'll admit though, I was a bit hesitant when I saw the table of contents listing so many different POVs. My brain tends to struggle with more than two or three. However, I ended up being pleasantly surprised by how well it actually worked. I enjoyed being able to learn about the world and characters from all the different eyes.

It's also nice that the author includes a 'content assurance' page at the start. This includes possible triggers as well as what to expect from her writing, such as no swearing or spice.

I'm excited to see where the story goes next and how the power struggles will unfold. I definitely recommend checking it out if you love epic fantasy with strong world building and intriguing characters.

5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Without a doubt one of the most unique books I have read in a long time. Quite a few POVs but each one added to the plot and continued to push everything along at solid pace. Each different POV chapter left you with questions that you NEED answered. The world-building was fantastic and I enjoyed the over all set up, especially with the over-arching religions of the regions. Absolutely loved how all of these small, almost slice of life events rolled up slowly in to the plot. The author did not waste any event in this book. The animals companions add so much life and loyalty as well.

This was just such a refreshing read. I really enjoy it when characters have to work for things and aren’t just magically handed what they want or what they need. The journey is half the fun!

The author did a beautiful job of pulling together different lands and leaders as they navigate an impending war with darker forces. She focused on the different emotions that each character would have throughout the rollarcoaster of events that unfolds within. There were many times that I was unsure of where the author was going to go with the story but I was pleasantly surprised with how she tied everything up at the end, leading into the second book of the series. I cannot wait to continue on this journey!

The way this book pulled me in surprised me. Typically I do not gravitate to multiple POVs, but I cannot picture this story told any other way. The political intrigue and epic fantasy elements are so so good. And getting multiple POVs helps build the story and the fantasy world so well. I am 100% invested, especially the ending. I am so excited to know this is a trilogy and December 2025 cannot come fast enough for book two!

When it comes to the main characters Seraphina is cunning and smart. She crafts her political moves and isn’t a damsel in distress! I love that she is willing to do what necessary for her country.
Aldric isn’t written as a typical MMC but I love the portrayal. I love him especially with his 12 sons and their relationship. I do not want to spoil the story, but I do not think we got to see the full depth of what’s to come for Aldric and I am ready for book 2.

This is for sure a slow slow burn romance, and very much more enemies than lovers. But I am excited to see how the clean romance builds the next two books. I am so curious to see how they bond and grow together.

Also I am putting this out for Ashley, I want a character drawing of Alyx!!

Review
Lots of war going on in this book, Seraphina is trying her best to plan how to save her kingdom. Love the friendship between her, Olivia and Lord Tristan. And poor Seraphina have to go through a toxic friendship with her childhood friend Baron T. whom she had a crush on but only to find out that he jus want to marry her in order to get a lot of business as he can get. More to status and fame not love her as she is.

And she got to meet with Aldric, whom she thought had died 15 years ago. They don’t see eye to eye ever since then and have misunderstanding with each other though they had misunderstandings he still protected her and kept her safe from the assassination. Love their bickering and also when he is jealous when his men get along with her so well as well as her toxic childhood friend who is full of himself. As the slowly got to know each other, they had mixed feelings for each other and they worked together to save her kingdom and get back his rightful throne from his sly half-brother and also evil stepmother.

The story is still ongoing and this is the first book of the story can’t wait to read the next book which will be coming out on December 2025.

If you like the feel of medieval times, magic and war of kingdoms this is a book for you. This is the first book of the trilogy. Can’t wait to read what happens next.

Oh man, where do I start?

Let me say this is the first book I have properly read in years, and I absolutely enjoyed it. The overall writing and plot was so well done. I found the ending quite satisfying, and in all honesty I found the slow-burn just perfect.

I know some reviews have mentioned the storyline was too slow-paced, or took time to get into. But I suppose as someone who has never been a reader, I didn’t have any particular expectations that led me to compare the story to other series.

Some things I liked about the book:

⭐️ How easy it was to read. It was just the right amount of description for my taste. Not “too much fancy words”. And the dialogue worked quite well.

⭐️ The multi POVs. Unlike a few of the reviews I had seen, I wasn’t taken aback by the amount of different characters perspectives. I must definitely agree with anyone who said that they all flowed quite smoothly. And I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way. It was nice to get an insight on other people’s views aside from Seraphina.

⭐️ Learning about Aldric and his 12 Sons. I found Calix to be an interesting character, and the whole “Mother” and “Father” thing was a humorous addition to the plot. In all honesty, Aldric might be my favorite character.

⭐️ The element of the Christianity woven in the book. I quite liked that it was an underlying theme that wasn’t “in your face”. And the dynamic of the Lord on High verses the Lady Below is also interesting.

Overall the storyline and writing itself is great. I love the characters and their chemistry throughout the plot.

I suppose the only thing I felt a bit iffy about was Tahlia’s chapter, since I personally found it a bit too dark for my taste. However, I am interested to see if she makes an appearance in the rest of the trilogy and how her character plays out. I will say though as someone who isn’t comfortable with supernatural elements, I did find that the written concept of the witches weren’t glorified in any way. So that I do appreciate.

While I ended up liking this book, it took me a little while longer to read it and get fully invested in it because it was somewhat slow or slightly confusing to me at the beginning. This is a multi POV story but seems a little excessive with like 10 different voices at least. The first several chapters are all from a different character and in different places, different times and they didn't connect directly to the previous character's chapter. About 30-50% of the way through the book got going faster as the story connected more fluidly and made more sense to me. At that point I was fully invested and eager to see what was going to happen next.

Seraphina and Aldric make an interesting pair and I'm looking forward to seeing how their future plays out. They have a lot of great banter, energy and chemistry. There is a bonus chapter from Aldric's perspective that is fun to read, after the fact, if you download it. We all know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and Alric and Seraphina are both an example of that. They are judged, (in much different ways), but need to show that they are more than what others claim them to be. I like the redemption arc that Aldric can have- showing he is more than just what others see him outwardly to be. To be the King he was born to be.
There are a lot of opposites- worshiping a Lord, oracles with prophesies and then witchcraft and the Lady Below and a death/demon type character. Some stuff gets kind of dark and I honestly didn't love it, but will have to see how it plays out.
Overall this is an intriguing read with cliffhangers, so make sure to wait for book 2.

This book was an extremely difficult read. It started very slow and took a long time for me to actually want to pick it up to continue reading it. There were 12 POVs, which made keeping everyone straight very difficult. There were a couple story lines that I felt didn’t bring any value to the story, although maybe those have importance in future books. There was over 500 pages of reading and I’m not sure that we really got anywhere with the story.

This books is sold as the Christian version of Game of Thrones, but I have never read those books or seen the show, so I am not able to compare it. This book is very dark, so much so that I was uncomfortable reading it at times. The witches were too much and the “truth tellings” were just weird. I found it odd that the book is sold as a Christian romance, but there really wasn’t any romance. This books was SO different from the prequel, which had a good story line that evolved the character’s relationship and made me want to read more.

I completed the book because I have a hard time giving up on books, but it took me three weeks (which is a long time for me) and I wasn’t truly engaged until the last 100-150 pages. The end did leave me curious about what will happen with the Aldric and Seraphina, but not enough to put myself through the second book. I really wanted to like this book, as so many highly recommended it, but it was not a good fit for me and my reading preferences.

So many fantasy authors liken their novels to the infamous Lord of the Rings that it almost becomes white noise in describing a book. However, A War of Crowns by Ashley Willingham at first captivated me with its likeness to the legendary saga. Surprisingly, only a few chapters in, the story engaged me in a way uniquely its own.

This no-spice, faith-honoring tale is truly in its own league. The book’s large cast featured characters so perfectly balanced between their wicked and good sides that they stirred my empathy in fascinating ways. I couldn’t wait to turn the page, eager to see what would happen next, and genuinely didn’t know who I was rooting for until the very end.

The writing flows smoothly, with a comfortable rhythm and just the right amount of complexity to maintain engagement. Spiritual themes, such as the eternal battle between light and darkness, the triumph of truth over deception, and the questioning of faith by false doctrines, are intricately woven into the very core of the narrative.

The narrative artfully crafts an experience that left me eager for more, yet my heart was entirely satisfied by its conclusion. In the realm of fantasy, this book is a breath of fresh air, revitalizing a genre that had grown predictable to me with its imitations of famous classics. Fantasy lovers won’t want to miss this one. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Fair warning: when this book says multiple POV, it MEANS IT!😆 When I first read the description saying "multiple POVs " I thought, "It can't be THAT bad! How many can there be??" The answer is: A LOT😋 And as someone who starts getting confused at 3 POVs this book felt super intimidating super fast😅
All that to say, this book - the story, the characters, the message - is TOTALLY worth it❤ While I have never read or watched Game of Thrones, I can say without a doubt that series is the perfect clean alternative!
If you're looking for a quick payoff in the romance department, this isn't the book for you. Romance is practically non-existent between our two MCs, Seraphina and Aldric, but the tension is absolutely immaculate 😍 Watching the girl who wasn't meant to rule, and the true but cast off prince square off amidst the political machinations swirling around them will keep you on your toes and itching for more 😁 However, it was the fiercely loyal and stabby Olivia who I most enjoyed😋 IYKYK
A War of Crowns is no small book, but it was over too soon for me! The fact that next installment in this series isn't releasing until December certainly doesn't help😭 The best authors always know how to torture us, am I right?🥴

I never thought a Christian fantasy romance would be something this grandma of nine grandkids couldn’t put down—but here we are. 😆

Up until just a few months ago, I had only ever read non-fiction Christian books. Fantasy was completely unfamiliar territory for me, and at first, I’ll admit, I felt a little lost trying to understand the world and where the story was going. 😌

But somewhere along the way… something shifted.
The characters became real. Their struggles, their faith, their courage—it drew me in. What once felt unfamiliar became deeply engaging. Today, I finished the book in one sitting because I truly could not put it down! ⚔️

What surprised me most was how much heart this story carried. Beneath the crowns and kingdoms was a story about identity, purpose, sacrifice, and trusting God even in uncertainty. Those themes resonated with me more than I expected from a fantasy novel.

I never imagined I would be this invested in a fantasy series, but the ending left me wanting more, and I will absolutely be continuing on to the next book to see where this journey leads.

If you’re new to fantasy like I was, don’t let the unfamiliar stop you. This story is worth the journey.

War of Crowns was incredibly engaging and entertaining. The author is clearly very talented — the writing pulled me in so completely that I felt transported right into the world of the story. I especially loved the characters. There are a lot of them, so I really had to pay attention, but they were interesting and well written enough that it was worth it.

The only reason I didn’t give it five stars was the darker magic. The author writes so vividly that I could almost see and feel what was happening, and some of those scenes were honestly a little scary for me. I didn’t enjoy those parts, but that really says something about how powerful her writing is.

I had heard the series compared to Game of Thrones, but while reading I didn’t realize just how strong the similarities were until I was describing the story to my daughter and she pointed it out. It definitely has that kind of layered world and multiple character perspectives.

Also, the extra chapter at the end is absolutely a must-read — don’t skip it. I finished it and immediately started the next book.

Overall, a very immersive and memorable read.

I had to sit on my thoughts for a while, but giving this beauty a 4.75 star rating. I truly enjoyed my time in this world and story. My only gripe is that the beginning seemed a bit slow as there were tons of characters to get to know, various kingdoms, and so forth.

I truly enjoyed Seraphina and Aldric. Two very different people, two different views and upbringings, but they pair so well together. They kept me on my toes throughout this book.

Characters I disliked immensely: the Bennetts, Tiberius, Edmund, the Dowager Queen, and Mariana. They are all the worse and played their roles well enough.

I love the Sons and can't wait to see more of them. Olivia is my girl -- every girl needs a bestie like her. Tristian was amazing. The Oracle was great!

I need to know more about this Bonesinger, the Lady Below, and the witches.

The faith aspects kept me going. I enjoyed the talk of faith, fear, standing strong, and so forth.

For a no-spice novel, this was an epic one for sure.

Can't wait for the sequel!!!

A War of Crowns by @ashleywillinghamauthor
I kept seeing this adventure hitting bookstagram and booktube by storm, and alas, caved and bought with my Christmas giftcard. In a word: Adventurous
In a few words: intriguing, soft intensity, raging battles, good vs evil, enemies to lovers, devotion to a kingdom.
What I admire most about this story: NO CURSING, no morally gray character development, there is a mmc who is turning from dark gray to light, it's definitely a journey and one he hasn't achieved by book's end though there is promise. The villains in this story are witches fyi, and they are truly evil, no good witch garbage. The light side worships the Lord on high, no guesses on if it's truly God we are referring to, I appreciate that!
This story isn't for everyone, the battles can be intense, loss of life, thematic elements, and a lot of political intrigue. But definitely spice and language free. Yay!
It ends on a little cliff, so needless to say imma need answers soon!

I genuinely wasn’t expecting A War of Crowns to sweep me off my feet the way it did. The pacing starts slow, but once it picks up—wow, does it deliver. I was completely absorbed by the world of Elmoria, its divine magic system, and the rich political drama unfolding on every page.

And the romance? No spice, but all the feels. Seraphina and the true king of Drakmor have serious slow-burn enemies-to-lovers tension, and I couldn’t get enough.

I also loved the multiple POVs, which gave the story so much texture and intrigue—every character felt important, and the stakes were high from every angle.

💖 Bonus love for the disability rep—Seraphina’s chronic pain was woven into the story with care and didn’t define her character. She was strong, complex, and beautifully written.

If you love: ✔ Clean but compelling romance
✔ Strong female leads
✔ Court intrigue and divine magic
✔ Adult fantasy with depth and heart

📖 A War of Crowns deserves a spot on your shelf. Cannot wait for the next installment!

It's decently readable, without too much exposition to bog down the story proper. Seraphina is a considerate character who's trying very hard to do her job while being reminded that she's a woman in a man's world. Aldric is a principled character with his own agenda and the determination to see it through.

Their romance surprises them both, but despite some snags towards the end of the book, I can see how they end up partnering with one another. There's plenty of politics, though for anyone expecting chess-heavy gameplay, I expect you'll be disappointed. All the twists and turns are approachable and foreseeable, depending on how well-read you are in this genre.

They're still enjoyable, and as a romance, it goes precisely where the reader would hope, which is the mark of a happy-for-now story.

The biggest drawback for me was the heavy-handedness of the faith discussion at the front of the book, and the extreme prejudice against the witches. I could've done without it.
