^THESE ISBNs ARE NOT DOUCE NUIT^ -Ribera & Godard's Axel Munshine translated to English- "THE VAGABOND OF LIMBO = WHAT IS REALITY, PAPA?"
Almost never do I think the story should lose the last page but here we have a perfect ending on the preceding bottom right panel. Those last two are essentially the same thing -one in Axel's & clown boy's purview and the other in the Hollywood milieu- but the second isn't necessary because we've already filled it in.
OTHERWISE it's a *GEM*: Presented in tight and INTERESTING RiberArt It's removed but pertinent Adventure but real Philosophy but poignant (+DaVinci's androdilemma-> "Is it a boy or a girl?") All that and more that I'm too lazy to discern with the trimmings of action and HARD drama!

Cute story about a little girl who stays up late, reading--so late even her stuffed animals start begging her to go to sleep so they can get some rest. Finally she succumbs to sleep, only to have her little playmates turn the tables, making a racket so she can't sleep. An apology. Forgiveness. And they all finally enjoy their slumber.
Anna Banana's stuffed animal friends are tired after a long day and are just ready to sleep. But Anna isn't ready yet, she just wants to finish up her book. And when they try to leave to go elsewhere to sleep, Anna doesn't let them. But when she's finally ready to go to sleep the stuffed animals have their revenge and give Anna taste of her own medicine. When all is said and done, will anyone learn a lesson?
This is a short, but fun children's book with some good lessons in it for young readers and beautiful illustrations. The writing is superb, as Anna Banana is a vivacious, vibrant young kid that almost anyone can relate to. But more importantly, to me at least, is that Anna isn't staying up to watch TV or play video games. She's staying up to read a book! And while I encourage people to do that (it is quite awesome), Anna isn't being mindful of her friends wishes to go to sleep! Anna and her friends both learn something in this tale.
The illustrations are bright, cheerful, and will make readers you and old laugh out loud. The soft, fuzzy, watercolors are just the thing to look at before going to sleep. The stuffed animals all appear fuzzy and the use of gorgeous soft blues capture the essence of a night time scene, and the soft yellows capture the gentle glow of a lamp being turned on. Young readers (and old) will love looking at the illustrations of Anna and her friends.
Who among us didn't imagine that our stuffed animals could talk to us? This is the perfect book to help young readers understand that their our consequences for the things we do that can affect others around us. I'd recommend this book highly to folks with kids under 5 and as a great book for storytime. I give the book 4 out of 5 stars. And as an additional note, a second book in the Anna Banana series is coming out next year from First Second!
*One last note, is that the paper this book is printed on is extremely thin and may not stand up to a lot of wear and tear. This is First Second's first foray into the picture book realm and the next book, Julia's House for Lost Creatures, is printed on better stock. Just something to take into consideration.*
Sleep Tight, Anna Banana! is a picturebook written by Dominique Roques and illustrated by Alexis Dormal. It is currently scheduled for release on June 17 2014. Anna Banana can't settle down and go to sleep, the book she is reading is just too good to put down. Her stuffed animal friends are tired and just want to sleep, encouraging her to do the same. However Anna makes them suffer through delay after delay and excuse after excuse. Finally Anna Banana is sleepy, but now her stuffed friends are not. Anna Banana gets a taste of her own medicine.
Sleep Tight, Anna Banana! is a cute story that can foster a love of reading and open up discussions about being courteous to others and a thoughtful friend. I liked that while Anna was not ready to sleep, she was reading rather than watching television or fooling around. She really gets into her book, and is enjoying her reading, not just killing time so that she does not have to fall asleep. She also uses her imagination, and is aware that she is not being the best of friends to her stuffed friends- whom she gives the full personality of people. I love that she knows this and even turns the tables on herself when she is finally ready to close her eyes and fall asleep.
I would highly recommend Sleep Tight, Anna Banana! for bedtime and storytime reading. It works as a one on one reading or in a larger group. I think the issues of bedtime, being considerate to others, the use of imagination, and a love of reading can all be expanded on in family or classroom discussions after enjoying the story together.
Anna Banana cannot seem to settle herself this bedtime and wants to read. She puts off sleep much to the annoyance of her stuffed animals who are all tired and finally have had enough. When she does turn out the light and is off to slumberland her animals decide it's payback time. They rally together to give her a dose of what it is like to be kept awake unwillingly and Anna Banana is not amused.
Anna Banana is a feisty little tyke with a mind and will of her own. She definitely wants to be in charge and in no certain terms lets her animals know it. The book highlights the love of reading but also the consequences of being selfish and making the world around you all about you and not being considerate of the needs of others.
The illustrations are just fantastic. They are very expressive, colourful and playful. This book will give you many opportunities to smile and even laugh out loud as it is shared. I highly recommend it. Sleep Tight, Anna Banana will be released June 17, 2014 so keep an eye out for it and be sure to add it to your collection of great children's books.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for a review of the book.
This is a cute story about a girl who loves to read. When her stuffed animals want to go to sleep, Anna continues reading a book that makes her laugh, cry, scream and shout. The tables turn when Anna wants to sleep -- her stuffed animals start making noises, bouncing around, and anything else that keeps Anna from sleeping. In the end, Anna learns to be considerate of others.
I love the way Sleep Tight, Anna Banana integrates a love for reading with character education. The book shows young children that reading is fun and provides us with a range of emotions and experiences. Another point that is made in this book is that we should be considerate of others, which I think is an important lesson for young children who sometimes don't think about how their actions impact others. Finally, the book teaches about forgiveness. Anna and her stuffed animal friends forgive one another for keeping each other awake. Kisses and cuddles are in abundant supply at the end of the book.
The book isn't schedule for publishing until mid-2014, so this review is subject to change.
I read another review that said that this book has several ideas included in it that would be over a young child's head, and I have to agree. While it is a cute story, the reasons for why the stuffed animals keep Anna awake will not be understood by most children. Anna is reading a good book and stays up even though her stuffed animals are tired. Then when Anna finally decides to go to sleep, the stuffed animals turn the tables by doing things to keep Anna awake until she realizes how insensitive she was being to them earlier. After she apologizes they all happily go to sleep.
The color illustrations in this book are soft with fuzzy undertones. They give the reader that sense the fuzzy time right before you drift off to sleep. Each stuffed animal character is cute and cuddly but also very expressive - tired, dismayed, retaliatory, offended, and finally happy. The picture formats are a mix of standard picture book format and cartoon boxes with speech bubbles. The text font also reminds me more of a comic book than a picture book.
Sleep Tight Anna Banana is a bed time story of a girl Anna Banana who is not ready for bed. Anna Banana's parents tell her think she is sleeping but she's really reading. Anna Banana's stuffed animals are tired and try to turn out the lights. After a while, the stuffed animals give up. Anna Banana is finally tired and turns off the lights. The stuffed animals turn the lights on and start dancing around the room. Anna Banana gets upset and yells at her stuffed animals. After she becomes upset the animals say "you kept us from sleeping too". Anna Banana apoligizes and all agree it is bedtime. I enjoyed the story as it was a cute bedtime story. I was drawn to Anna Banana's crazy hair and the names of her stuffed animals; Fuzzball, Zigzag, Pingpong. This is a story that I would incorporate into my classroom as a read aloud. The students would be able to identify with the crazy stuffed animals with names and make believe time and doing something fun that you don't want to pull away from to go to bed.
I was a first reads winner of Sleep Tight Anna Banana ! Written By Dominique Roques , Illustrated by Alexis Dormal It's a story of little girl who isn't quite ready to put her book down and go to sleep even when her beloved stuffed animals want to sleep ...well once she is ready to sleep the stuffed friends show her what's its like to be kept awake ! She soon learns she wasn't being kind to her friends and tells them how sorry she is and they all cuddle in for a good nights sleep ! I read this book to my six year old daughter and she fell in love with the story ! She loved all the stuffed animals cute names and wanted me to repeat the names so she could remember them ! And she wanted to go to sleep herself right after the story so not to be unkind to her own bed full of stuffed animal friends . This book is one that me and my daughter will cuddle up with and read over and over .
This was a cute book that encourages children to read but, not to read late at night. Anna Banana stays up late reading because she cannot put her book down because it is so good. All of her stuffed animals surround her on her bed. They are tired and want Anna to turn her light off, but no she still reads on. Each of her stuffed animals tries to leave to sleep elsewhere but she stops them all. At long last she is tired and turns out the light, but there is a surprise in store for Anna Banana. I'm not going to tell you what it is; you'll have to pick up this book to find out. In the end this book teaches a great lesson and I recommend it to parents, teachers, and children who like a book that teaches lessons through humor.
I received a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this story. It starts off with Anna who doesn't want to put her book down to sleep. I can totally relate to this! I've went with little or no sleep many times because I couldn't part with my book! Anna's stuffed animals wanted to sleep but Anna wouldn't turn out the light and go to sleep. Once she finally went to sleep, the animals give her a taste of her own medicine- they are very noisy and won't allow her to sleep.
I like stories that teach a lesson, and this is great for that. Sometimes you have to think of other people's feelings and do something you don't want to do!
Anna does not want to go to sleep. She tries to read to help her body to want to shut down for awhile but instead becomes so engaged in her book that she keeps up her stuffed pals: Zigzag, Fuzzball, Pingpong, Foxface, Whaley and Grizzler. They try to encourage her to sleep and when she finally does, the tables are turned.
The author, Dominique Roques originally wrote this book in French and it has been illustrated by her son Alexis Dormal. The illustrations are adorable and expressive. The language simple and direct. It is a cute book, a good tool for parents with young children who have trouble falling asleep.
Bedtime comes, but little Anna Banana is not quite ready to fall asleep. She is reading a very exciting and funny book. Her stuffed animals aren't very happy with her, they just want to begin snoozing. Finally Anna Banana turns out the light and snuggles down only to have her furry friends decide to give her a taste of her own medicine. They cause a great ruckus which does the job of showing Anna how her behavior affects others. All is well in the end and every gets a good night's rest. This story is mostly told in a comic book style with speech bubbles and illustrated panels. The artwork is great and combined with the humorous but exemplifying tale this is a great choice for bedtime.
Anna is reading a great book so when it's time to go to bed she can't quite commit just yet. All around her, her stuffed animals are tired and trying to flee, but Anna won't have it. When she's finally ready to call it a night, her stuffed friends turn the tables on her.
Funny and well done with distinctly different personalities for each of the stuffed animals. I liked all the extra details to be found in the artwork, especially when Whaley squirts water out of his blowhole when surprised by Anna's laughter.
It’s bedtime for Anna Banana, but she won’t stop reading her book: lights are still on, and she laughs, and is not in the least sleepy. But her stuffed animals just want to sleep! When she finally turns off the lights, it’s her friends’ turn to keep her awake.
The illustrations are endearing and I love the Toy Story-like stuffed animals, that come to life at night, even when the child is still awake. The artwork is cartoonish, with several panels in some of the pages and lots of dialogue. I love it!
Anna's stuffed animals are ready to sleep, but bossy Anna insists on keeping the light on -- and keeping her toys close -- as she reads more of her book. When Anna finally decides she's ready to snooze, her stuffed animals turn the tables on her by keeping her awake instead.
Anna Banana is a cute story about showing respect for others, and could make a good introduction to discussions about the Golden Rule. The illustrations are lively and often humorous, and they accompany the story very well.
