When James falls for the new guy at the station is he just setting himself up to be burned?

Welcome to Deacon, Oklahoma. Straight population—seven hundred and ninety-six. Gay population—James Hara. Except it really isn’t that bad, because when he came out to his hometown, something wonderful happened. They still loved him…most did anyway. The only problem is the lack of a dating pool.

Then he meets the new firefighting volunteer and he has a bigger problem. Mason is gorgeous, friendly and straight. Soon James is doing his best not to fall for his new friend. Hard to do when Mason is everything he dreams of, with his humor and flashes of vulnerability.

But after a set of stressful events, he finds that maybe it is not impossible after all. If he can be patient with a man wounded by his past.

T.K. Paige

T.K. Paige picked up her first book to read around the age of four and hasn’t stopped since. She discovered the M/M genre in August of 2012 and an addict was hooked.

If you see her and she is not reading, then she is thinking about the books that live in her head. It doesn’t matter what else she is doing, it is guaranteed half her brain has a plot running through it.

A stay at home mom for more years than she would like to think about, she is lucky enough to be married to a wonderful guy who encouraged her to write throughout their years together. Then when she finally did it and she told him what she was writing, he turned only slightly green and asked “Do I have to read it?” Apparently, he had dreams of her being the next Urban Fantasy sensation with her taste in movies… We won’t tell him what she watches when she is alone all day folding laundry.

About me, hmm...I am a happily married mom of four. I have probably spent half my life buried in a book and rest of it, with my head in the clouds, thinking of the stories that I might write one day. In 2013 I decided one day was here and I started writing, seriously writing, not just toying around. So I am starting out what hope is a long journey and learning as I go.

If you know me, you know I always have the highest of hopes when reading M/M romance firefighter fiction. It's my favorite! But I'll be reviewing this as a normal book because there wasn't any firefighting going on here. The folks in this book are volunteer firefighters in a small town in Oklahoma. MC James owns a gas station and MC Mason works on his computer from home.

So, it all started off just grand! Super secret, smoldering and sexy Mason saunters into Deacon, OK, a transplant from Texas, looking to start a new life in the small town. Openly gay, lifelong resident James is instantly smitten and quietly devastated when he finds out Mason is straight. But the two men become very good friends and reading about their interactions was good times, until James let it "slip" to his best friend Tosh that he was actually secretly in love with Mason. Then the fun times stopped. The angst began. The two men let all their secrets out in one short conversation and all the sexual tension was gone. Just gone. *sigh* Later, there was a giant dose of hurt/healing/comfort, not firefighter related (damn!) but these boys never had a chance to bond in my opinion so I didn't feel the heat or the love I normally inhale when reading hurt/healing/comfort. I needed more casual, fun and fancy free "straight" Mason, with his flashes of agony and developing friendship with James, before I could buy into the rest.

In a nutshell, the MCs were a nice pair, but were never given the time to connect and smolder. The book was just too short. As for the sex? Wasn't feeling it! Even when they were taking things slow and doing the heavy petting thing, it didn't raise my temp.

I cannot recommend this one. Wish it would have been longer...

I liked the beginning of this story with James pining for the "straight" Mason, another volunteer firefighter. It turns out that Mason isn't straight, just in the closet. And he has reasons.

But as soon as the guys got together (Mason confessed that he was gay and wanted James), the tension dissipated. We had the big confession, and that was that. James was a bit of a pushover, but Mason was sweet so I was okay with it.

Then toward the end we have a heavy dose of melodrama, and everything happens in a rush. The MCs don't really get it on until the last few pages of the book.

I did like James's BFF Tosh; usually the female BFF is painted as too meddlesome, and Tosh was that, but she meant well.

And there's a HEA, so there's that.

This was really an okay book; the writing was fine. I didn't always love James's first-person POV (he sounded a bit like a teenage girl), but I could deal. The relationship was nothing remarkable though, and there wasn't enough character building for me to become invested in the story.

Also, despite the cover, there's not a whole lot of firefighting going on here. The guys are volunteers, and the station seems a vague and convenient prop for them meeting. Bummer - I wanted some hot fireman action.

Short, fast read in between. Nothing that will particularly stay with me and the scene with the parents was rather pointless and unnecessary.

Well…if you think you can buy me off with casual mentions of Doctor Who that set my fanboy heart a flutter…well, then, you are probably correct. I’m all kinds of cheap and easy for Doctor Who. Some might consider it a failing–-I consider it a way of life. So starting out with mentions of TARDISs and Sonic Screwdrivers was probably a good call. I’m never going to say no to Doctor Who in stories. Never. They revoke your fanboy privileges for that and where would I be without the ability to squeee?

It didn’t hurt that in addition to Doctor Who (I promise this is the last time I’ll mention that show (in this review)), we also got some hot firefighters. Everyone loves a firefighter. Especially when they are all…dirty. And half-dressed. And being all firefighter-y…

Err…sorry. I’m easily distracted?

Anyways, this was a rather nice story. I liked the camaraderie between the guys at the station as well as with Mason and James. And it doesn’t hurt that I love GFY/OFY stories. I liked that James didn’t push Mason to come out. I think after hearing everything that Mason went thru, it would have been kinda a douche move if James had then turned around and asked Mason to put himself on the line like that before he was ready. And Mason does get there…eventually.

I kinda wish this wasn’t written in first person, though, because at times it felt a little too…heady. I guess. All that time spent in James head–while not torturous–was a bit much at times. The connection between Mason and James had a hard time coming thru all the snarky lust floating around in James’ head, sometimes.

It didn’t help that we basically skipped almost the whole ‘just friends’ portion of their story. I get wanting to move the story along, but since we never got to see how they really became friends–real friends and not just the outer layers–I sometimes felt like what they had was a bit wishy-washy. There was some pretty heavy stuff floating around in between them, and in their pasts, and I had a hard time feeling the impact as much as I should have.

I did enjoy reading this though…and while I would love to smack James upside the head for his whole ‘escape the family abode plan’ at the end, I liked that his reaction to the incident was not just shrugged off. That the reaction to both their incidents were not just shrugged off. All in all? An enjoyable story, even if it flounders a bit when it comes to the heavy hitting emotions.

I’ve got to say, I wasn’t expecting to like this book. I wanted a quick read and it had a low word count, so I took it thinking I could just flick through it quickly and be done. I was not, however, expecting to be this impressed. T.K. Paige’s first book was handled wonderfully, nurturing the characters and combining tragedy of past days with the burgeoning love of the present.

I don’t like to read about sexual assault, generally. I tend to avoid it for no other reason than it’s just hard to read. The theme of assault in this book was handled very respectfully. It was a part of the plot but did not overstep into the overall story in a way that might cheapen the love story unfolding. I respect an author’s ability to do this a lot.

The characters were wonderful, from the MCs, Mason and James to the townsfolk of Deacon; everyone read three-dimensionally and were believable, all fitting into the plot like puzzle pieces. James was very relatable, an average Joe who wasn’t overblown or contrived. He was very human and very easy to like. I was rooting for him the whole way through. Mason, our damaged love interest, was tastefully presented, his story unfolding gradually, propelling the plot and rounding out the story.

The story was wonderfully paced. For a novella, it can be easy to slip into bad practice when creating a timeline, but Paige had this story ambling along nicely, a three arc structure that stayed nicely within the lines of the set-up. Even the more dramatic scenes seemed to fit in well with this tale, the sex elevated it and the drama pulled it through to the cute HFN ending. Two thumbs up for that.

I wanted something I could get through quickly and easily, to get it out the way. I got my wish, but I got through it so quickly because I really liked it. I couldn’t put it down. This author shows wonderful promise, and I look forward to seeing what we will see next from T.K. Paige. 4.5 stars for this juicy tale of love in the firehouse.

2.5 rounded up.
“When I came out, this town didn’t change the way they saw me. Instead, they changed how they saw the world. I could never leave this place. There may be places where I could meet more people who are gay, but I don’t think I could ever find a place that would be the home Deacon is.”
James is a volunteer fireman and the only out gay man in Deacon, Oklahoma, but it's home. The arrival of Mason shakes his lonely existence to the core. They start out as friends, but all good things start out that way, where it goes depends on them.

In one word: Drama-llama. (Two words? Whatever.)

Everything was over the top and cliched. Even as a short read, it dragged on. There were also a lot of unnecessary things. For example, the Carl thing. Tosh sets James up, the guy sucks as a person, but it's never actually addressed. It just happens, and we move on to the next dramatic thing.

I think the author has potential, but really needs to grow and find a style that works for her. This just didn't work for me.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

The story opens up and immediately pulled me right in as James is bantering with his best friend. Everything is seen from James’ perspective and he is quick, witty, fun, and a good friend. His inner dialog is entertaining and there is an immediate connection to him. Being a volunteer fireman, he is the only gay man on the squad and the only gay man in the entire town. The story behind his coming out in the Bible Belt was brave and depicts him trying to stay true to himself the only way he knew how at the time. James is a really likable guy who just wants to live his life and find a man to share it with. Mason also had my interest as it was clear he was holding back in a lot of ways.

I think what made me really enjoy this book more was how the author handled some of the subject matter of the story. It would have been very easy to turn this into a dark, angst filled story (which I don't particularly like), but it wasn't. It was just a part of the characters and the story without overwhelming the whole thing. There were parts that were light hearted and funny. I liked these two characters and enjoyed their slow build up of their relationship. Will definitely look at more books written by this author.

James owns a gas station and a couple of rental properties, has lots of friends, is a volunteer firefighter and he is also gay.
Because he lives in a small town the only thing that is missing from his life is dating other gay guys and meeting mr right. Then he meets Mason a guy who just moved to town. James feels an instant attraction to Mason but the guy is straight or isn't he?

This story has a nice slow build up, likable characters, problems to be solved and great friends.

I enjoyed reading this book and i would reccomend this.

This is a pretty cute story about volunteer firefighters James and Mason. While James is openly gay, he thinks Mason is straight. As they get closer and the feelings start to develop, Mason finally comes clean about really being in the closet and his reasons why. Now the question is, can they be happy with keeping their relationship a secret? And what happens when tragedy strikes? Will they be able to keep their feelings for each other a secret when they need each other the most?

James and Mason are a super cute couple. I liked the friendship they had together before they took things to the next level. I absolutely loved that James was so understanding of Mason’s relationship and he didn’t try to push him into doing things he didn’t want to do. For Mason, I was so sad to hear what happened to him but happy to see that he was able to move on and willing to take a risk with James. I adored them together and I liked the relationship they developed and especially where they ultimately ended up.

While I enjoyed this book, I had a few issues with it. For one, it took me a while to get into this story because of the POV. It’s very slow and since it’s first person, I kept putting it down and picking it up because he’s a little dramatic. I mean, it took me two years to read this story because it just wasn’t holding my attention. After this last time, though, I finally got far enough that it kept my attention. I liked the relationship between James and Mason but towards the end, I started getting a little frustrated with them because I missed seeing them actually become friends, your just dropped into them already friends with a brief telling of when they first met. Add to that, there wasn’t much firefighterness to it which was disappointed and I wasn’t feeling the lead up to the ending. I felt like it was sorta rushed and then we missed the whole coming out thing with Mason, which was even more disappointing!

In the end, I liked the story. It was nice and sweet but I felt like it was just too short to really get into the meat of things. The author spent a lot of time in James’ head but not enough time explaining or exploring anything that happened so a lot of it felt like it was told instead of shown. Still, if you’re looking for a short, sweet story, you should give this one a go!

This the first book by Ms. Paige that I have read, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Now, with that being said I will explain why it is that I rated this book 3 stars later on after I say why I enjoyed the book.
I loved James and Mason’s characters. I thought they were just great, and that Ms. Paige did a great job with James’ character, as well as with Mason and keeping his past a secret until it was time to reveal his past. It does take skill to leave the little hints throughout, without giving away the big picture. And she did great at that.
I thought the storyline was a really great idea. I enjoyed how different it was compared to a lot of the books that are out there right now. That is what definitely kept my attention and made me want to read more into the book.
Now, onto what I didn’t enjoy about the book. I felt like it was rushed at certain parts, and very slow at others. For instance, when Mason revealed his past (and that’s all that I’m saying so I don’t give away anything), I felt like that part was really rushed and brushed over. When there could have been a lot more told about what had happened and the after effects of it as well.
There were also some timeline jumps, to me personally, where I would be reading and then suddenly you find out that it was months in the future, but there weren’t any hints or clues that that much time had passed.
Besides those things, I did still enjoy the book and I do plan on reading more from Ms. Paige in the future.

I was given a copy of this book, not for review, just because the author is rather lovely!

James' reaction to the new guy is immediately and hot. Mason joins the volunteer firefighters as a way to make new friends and use his EMT experience. James wants Mason, but Mason is straight. After a particularly nasty accident, that Mason couldnt save the driver, and an incident that triggers Mason's past, he tells James all.

I did enjoy this book, it didnt take me long, just over an hour, but it gets a lot in! Its told entirely from James' POV, and y'all know how I feel about single person POVs. Mason had a lot to say, and we don't get it, not anything. And I think he should be heard. Especially when he was baring his soul to James.

Also, Mason's past could have been more elaborated on, had Mason had his say. It might have come across, not better, because thats not the right word, but differently. More emotionally, more...just MORE.

WHat I loved about this, was James. He wanted Mason from that very first meeting, and although he knew he couldnt have him, he kept coming back for more. He noticed the little things, and the big ones, and he still came back for more. I should like to LISTEN to this too, if it every comes out in audio, I think it would make a great audio book, simply because of James.

Thank you, again, to TK for my copy :-)

This is a sweet, heartfelt story of a gay man in a small town, but is for the most part accepted. Of course there are haters as in any town but since the town had loved James before he came out most people accepted him as he is. He is a business owner and has many rental buildings so he earns a good living and works as a volunteer on the local fire station.
James is an accident waiting to happen. I loved this about him, how he tries but things just happen. This leant a funny reprise to the dram of the story.
Deacon is from a larger city in Texas and has firsthand knowledge that not all towns or people are accepting and the damage hate crimes can have. Mason is a very well-liked man, an ex-military man and ex paramedic. Now he works form home and volunteers at the local fire station.
He and James become very good friends and help each other through some trying times.

This is a beautiful story of friends to lovers, towns sticking together for their own a little drama and mystery and some sweet loving mansex. It’s a great tory for those times you’re looking for a very sweet romance!

If you like firemen, paramedics, small towns, a touch of suspense, broken men, friends to lovers and happy endings this is for you!.
