The Princess and the Fraud

Rate this book
Lovey Hahn gave up her dream of becoming a professional cellist the day her mother died. She traded concert halls for the gilded walls of Alderton-Du Ponte, the state’s most elite country club, and she’s saving every penny to buy her late mother’s dream house, hoping it will fill the void music once did.
The problem? It’s been five years, the dream house is still out of reach, and she’s stuck living a life she resents.
Enter Aaron Astor—the charming, sharp-tongued heir to the country’s biggest travel empire—who waltzes back into town with a devastating smile, an infuriating knack for getting under her skin, and “looking for love.” But Lovey uncovers the truth: Aaron’s been cut off from his fortune and is only hunting for a wealthy wife to secure his inheritance.
Instead of exposing him, Lovey makes a deal: she’ll keep his secret if he buys her mother’s dream house before it goes up for auction.
Their arrangement should be simple, but the more Aaron gets under her skin, the more he gets into her heart. As he reignites her long-buried passion for music, Lovey starts to wonder if she’s fighting for the wrong future—and if she’s not the only one living a life she resents.
Torn between chasing her mother’s dream and finding her own, Lovey must decide if risking everything is worth the chance to compose a life she loves—or if some dreams are meant to stay unfinished, and she’s better off leaving other princesses to kiss the frogs.

I'm a pretty easy gal to please in the general sense. Rarely will you see me give a book less than three stars, because to me, a book is someone's art. They took their time, put their tears and time into creating something and then shared it with the world. Even when the book isn't my cup of tea, I respect the process and the author.

However, as easy going as I can be, I will not gush over a book I didn't absolutely adore. I won't sing its's praises to any and all, and that's exactly what I'll be doing about Princess and The Fraud.

I read the first book, Love and Other Champagne Problems by chance. The cover caught my eye and the premise sounded interesting enough (it's amazing) and I was left stunned by how much I loved that book and Margot Massey.

When I saw there was a sequel coming, and soon, about the villain of LOCP, I preordered it, auto buy ha ha.

Luckily I was also selected to receive an ARC and it blew me away. I've read a few ARCs this month I liked but this? A whole new level and experience.

Lovey Hahn is a young, former cellist, trying her best to navigate life after losing her mother. In order to realize her mother's dream of owning a Victorian home in an affluent neighborhood, she's dedicated the last five years to the Alderton-Du Ponte Country Club, working and saving every penny.

Fresh of the heels of his own scandal at Alderton-Du Ponte, Aron Astor is determined to find an heiress to marry and fast. It's the only way he can ensure his place in society and secure his financial future after being cut-off by his wealthy family.

Together, they navigate the treacherous, scheming waters of Country Club society with a scheme of their own. Lovey will keep Aron's secrets and vice versa so they both can get what they want in the end but it's easier said then done as the both realize the other isn't who they assumed they'd be.

This book was some a breath of fresh air. It's a romance, slow burn even, but it's SO different than the last 10 books I've read (in the best way).

You won't skip pages, you'll hang on Sarah's words, and you'll find yourself cheering for the bad guy's redemption and wanting to give Lovey a big hug. It's beautifully written and I legit squealed at times.

I'm officially obsessed and officially already reading it a second time.

Thank you to Sarah for this digital ARC!
This book was so good that I bought a physical copy halfway through. Can Sarah write my love story? This book was incredible. I was a bit hesitant because Aaron was not redeemable in Love and Other Champagne Problems (which you don’t need to read before TPATF), but I ADORED him in this book. The way Sarah made an unredeemable character so lovable and realistic is absolutely incredible. She showed two sides to the same story and made me sympathetic toward Aaron and his backstory. He deserves so much better. I loved his depth and character development. Because of his backstory, his actions make so much sense. I loved Lovisa a lot! She was awesome, and I enjoyed her feisty side, but also seeing her moments of doubt. She was imperfect, and she struggled with finding herself. Sarah writes very realistic characters, and it shows in this book. Both characters developed a lot and felt human. Lovisa and Aaron’s relationship was done perfectly. I normally have a hard time with enemies-to-lovers in contemporary, but this one felt realistic, and the reasoning for disliking Aaron was fleshed out well and allowed the plot and character development to grow. The setting was unique and made for some moments of tension. I really didn’t like some of the side characters, though (Caroline). The music elements were woven in beautifully! You can tell Sarah did her research because the terminology she used and the pieces she referenced were impressive. I already want to reread this duology. If you’re looking for a fun rom-com with great enemies-to-lovers, this is perfect.
There were a few passionate kisses and a character's drink/get drunk.

This might be my new favorite Sarah Sutton book! I gasped and giggled so many times and even teared up in a couple of spots.

I went into this book knowing I’d fall for Aaron Astor, despite how unlikable he was in Love and Other Champagne Problems, but was not expecting to fall for him so intensely. He had SO MANY good lines in this book, and the plot kept me engaged the entire time! I adored Lovey and the spark that only Aaron could bring out of her.

"Is this the part when you realise i'm kinda pretty." - Lovey Hahn

Another super cute enemies to lovers romance from Sarah Sutton!

Sarah threw so many twists and turns into the book that it was impossible to guess what was going to happen next.
And for the first time with a Sarah book I did wonder if this wouldn't end happily ever after.

I loved the setting of Alderton-Du Ponte country club. We didn't get to spend much time here in Love and Other Champagne Problems so I was excited about the prospect of having a full book set here.
However all it showed is just how much of a toxic work environment the club is. All the staff abide by a very strict set of rules and we see their bosses using them as though they are robots who don't need food or sleep.
I loved Lovey's relationship with other staff members, they all carried about each other and wanted to make sure they weren't all about to break under the pressure.

Lovey and Aaron are such a fiery couple, they both had things driving them throughout this book causing them to butt heads a lot.
Lovey wants to buy her mothers dream house, Aaron is searching for a wealthy wife.
Once they found out about what was driving each other they agreed to help each other out.

Lovey is so overworked, she's carrying so much on her shoulders and mostly from work.
Trying to prove again and again that she is an excellent employee, working extra long hours and back to back days.
So when Aaron begins to spend some time with her you can tell she relaxes a bit.
Seeing her realise that her dream might not be the dream she thought it was and turn back to things she loved as a child was wonderful.

Aaron went through a very rough time in Love and Other Champagne Problems so I went into this book hoping he'd have an easier time.
However, Aaron showed time and time again that he wasn't willing to give himself an easy time. Making bad choice after bad choice.
It did make it hard to like him when I felt bad for Lovey after every choice he made.

Watching their friendship grow was nice, seeing them grow closer and trust each other was lovely.

i think it's more of a 3.5 but rounding up instead of down felt right in this instance

here's the thing, i don't particularly like the characters or feel overly attached BUT their chemistry together? it's definitely somethinggg, and i like the emotional parts actually, the whole living for your loved one's dream and supressing your own, when Lovey finally broke down and admit to herself, i love the way it was handled, the thing with Aaron too and his need for his family's approval, etc. but i don't think both traumas have strong foundation, how do i explain this? like i like it when we get there and the process thereafter but the road to get to that point, the beginning, the introducing of the problems, i wasn't convinced.

Lovey did some really dumb things and I felt like the conflict was pushed too far back, closer to the end than I'd preferred but idk if i hate it bcs the epilogue redeemed it and i like the conclusion, the reunion happened on the last chapter LITERALLY and i was this close to being convinced that they don't end up together and i somehow misunderstood this for being a romcom (cause HEA is a must in a romcom imo!!), but i will just put it out there that i don't think i would hate the ending if they don't end up together bcs i could see how that would happen irl and that would give me a lot to think about but i would be rlly sad cause again CHEMISTRY

the third act conflict i have mixed feelings, I'm okay with Aaron's thought process of wanting to prevent Lovey from chaining herself to another person's dream but idk abt his decision to go to Caroline instead... i think it would've been better if i could see his thought process on that plus on finally deciding to jump the invisible bridge before the reunion more

last thing, i really enjoy the writing, i think it is very good, not cringey and idk i just had this thought throughout the book like "wow the writing is really goodd", the way emotions are described... it's so visceral i could feel it, so yea i enjoyed the book, esp the second half

SUMMARY
Following the passing of her mother, Lovisa ‘Lovey’ Hahn gives up her dreams of being professional cellist, waving goodbye to the glitz of the stage. Instead, she caters to the whims and ways of the wealthy at the country club, Alderton-Du Ponte, in hopes of being able to afford her mother’s dream home.

And that includes Mr Aaron Astor as one of many guests - supposed heir to a fortune. See, Aaron has been cut off from his fortune. Now he must find a wife to secure what remains of his inheritance before his 26th birthday.

As their paths become more and more tangled with each argument and passing comment between the two, will Lovey secure the home of ‘her’ dreams? And will Aaron secure the fine proposition that is a marriage?

Genre: romance
Tropes: strangers-to-enemies?-to-lovers, slow burn, rich x poor, forced proximity, love triangles

REVIEW
I read this book whilst I was sick, and I had the time of my life. I would have given it 4 stars when I was sick. It was exactly what I needed.

“Is this the part when you realize I’m kinda pretty?” [...]
“No [...] I’ve always knows”

In the most biased way possible, I had so much more fun with this book that I expected. It is completely littered with classic romance tropes - you literally smell them coming before you get to them. So if you’re someone who hates cliches then you’re better staying away.

Some of the characters were annoying (including Lovey at times with her short temper and her lack of awareness) but I could forgo that at times (but not always - evidenced by the number of times I rolled my eyes at a character’s stupidity or behaviour). I did love Annalise though, so much, and I don’t think she could really do any wrong.

OVERALL
Would I read this again? I, surprisingly, wouldn’t be opposed to it!

Can’t wait to start this book on release day! Every Sarah Sutton book has been a five star and from everything I’ve read already, this is going to be another banger!!! I gotta go back and start rereading and giving out my reviews for her previous books already, feeling the nostalgia come on

Update to come OMGGGGGG LETS GOOOOO

UPDATE ONE OMG ITS RELEASE DAY

The first chapter was wonderful!!!! The cliff thing, perfect, no confusion for me. Great characters, so much fun omg I’m so excited for the next chapters.

UPDATE TWO

I’ve finally stopped at chapter six and have come up for air. This is amazing

UPDATE THREE

I did not go to bed then. I stayed up till late and stopped at thirteen. I am not ashamed.

UPDATE FOUR

OK SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED. I can’t stop with this book. It really does feel like the best parts of a kdrama but none of the filler. I love these characters so much, they really are her best characters

The way that Sarah Sutton writes just makes me feel so understood. Aaron makes so much sense to me. He just does and it’s amazing that I can see that these two are a perfectly imperfect pair. I am prob 60 percent of the way through

UPDATE FINALLY

I finished it.
Omg

Sarah Sutton wrote an absolute gem.

She has a talent that has been crafted and shaped with time and introspection. She is very good at crafting stories that are romance heavy but not about romance.
I loved every moment of this. It was predictable in a way, of course. But it had special twists I didn’t expect that made up for it

The only thing!

SPOILERS AHEAD

Mrs Astor… I don’t know why the parents are absolutely absent. And it is bleak. I thought the last book was pessimistic but this one had no one. Not one dependable adult. Even Mrs Astor who was a wonderful role model in the last book has NO SCENES. Like she’s gone. Aaron said they didn’t cut him out, but they did

I need a sequel. I need something. Because the way this was, it was too realistic. It was too bitter and black and white and it felt like it was real.

And that’s why Sarah is my favorite author. Because she is realistic. In all her writing, she writes from the heart and when I read each new book, I feel like someone understands me.

And that’s why it’s so sad to know that that’s everything for now. But so happy that they found peace in the end with what they had

Lovey Hahn had dreams of being a professional cellist until her mother died. Now she is chasing her mother’s dream, even if it means working at the most snobby country club in the state.

Aaron Astor is the charming and disowned heir to the country’s largest travel empire. His failed attempt to marry Margot Massey leaves him cut off and looking for another wealthy wife.

Lovey takes an immediate dislike to Aaron. When she learns of Aaron’s secret, she blackmails him into buying the house her mother dreamed of. All he needs is a wife before his birthday so he can claim his inheritance so he can.

Review:
This enemies-to-lovers story has many twists and surprises, including Aaron’s reasons for why he is the way he is. In the world of the wealthy, Lovey and Aaron have to learn to be careful who they trust. And who can help them heal old wounds.

Sarah is known for characters of such depth and flaws that they grow on you until you find yourself rooting for them. Lovey and Aaron are no exception. Ex-boyfriends, conniving friends, devious board members, and condescending wealthy ladies add to the main characters’ woes. Be prepared to have your emotions take a rollercoaster ride.

Readers of Love and other Champagne Problems—the first book in this series—will already know to expect the unexpected. This book can be read alone. However, I highly recommend reading both books in the Luxuries of Love series. You’ll be glad you did.

I received an ARC copy of this book and the review is my personal opinion.

The Princess and the Fraud is everything I didn’t know I needed: an emotional, beautifully written slow burn with the kind of flawed, deeply human characters that stay with you long after the final page.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about Aaron Astor getting a redemption arc. He was a hard character to like in Love and Other Champagne Problems. What Sarah Sutton does here is nothing short of brilliant though. She doesn’t smooth over his flaws, she explains them. She gives us context, heartbreak, and vulnerability. By the end, I was not only rooting for him, I was swooning over him.

And Lovey? She’s fierce, loyal, determined, and completely relatable. Watching her navigate grief, ambition, and identity felt real in a way that hit hard. Her dynamic with Aaron is everything you want in an enemies-to-lovers romance: complex, slow-building, and full of emotional payoff. The banter is sharp, the chemistry simmers, and the elevator scene? Chef’s kiss.

The setting, an elite country club brimming with secrets and scheming, adds the perfect amount of tension. And the musical elements? They're woven in with such care and authenticity. You can tell Sutton did her research.

This story isn’t just about love. It’s about trust, redemption, and learning how to want something for yourself, not just in memory of someone else. I laughed, cried, got frustrated, and melted into the ending. And I already want to read it again.

Highly recommend!

“The Princess and the Fraud” by Sarah Sutton is the kind of book that makes you fall in love with reading all over again.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going in—especially with Aaron, who was far from endearing in Love and Other Champagne Problems. But somehow, Sarah Sutton managed to do what only the best writers can: take a character you thought you’d never root for and turn him into someone you want to protect with your whole heart. His journey feels raw, vulnerable, and deeply human.

Lovisa (Lovey) is equally compelling—grieving, striving, and quietly fierce in a world that constantly tries to overlook her. Her story resonated with me in quiet ways, especially how much she gave up to keep a promise, and how music becomes both her memory and her lifeline. The way their paths slowly intertwine—through secrets, heartbreak, and unexpected tenderness—felt honest and emotionally earned.

The writing is elegant, but never overwrought. Every page carries emotion—sometimes aching, sometimes sweet—and there’s a subtle magic in how Sarah captures the inner lives of her characters. It's romance, yes, but it’s also a story about loneliness, survival, and learning to ask for more—from life, from others, and from yourself.

I finished this book wanting to hug it. And then I started rereading it.If you love emotionally rich romance, slow-burn redemption arcs, and main characters who feel real, The Princess and the Fraud is a must-read for you.

Mixed feelings on this book.

Four stars total because of the way the author really fleshed out complicated characters and gave them such depth.

Now to my complaints. As a musician, this kind of treatment of music really, really drives me crazy. It is not how musicians think. The story doesn't even match the compositions played. And constantly using music to compare and describe the characters, their actions, their kisses, drives me nuts. It's a romanticized version of what a non-musician writer would reach for.

As long as I'm ranting, I'll give some specific examples. The character of Aaron keeps playing Rachmaninoff concerto as a solo (of all the concertos, this one dives immediately into the piano accompanying the orchestra). It mentions that it's a short piece. It mentions that Aaron has small hands. None of this is possible!! Aaah! Typically, serious musicians hate the over-played compositions (here's looking at you, Meditation from Thais).

If you are not a musician, this will not be an issue for you (obviously).

Also, the story was kind of depressing until the end and the world they inhabit, the mindset, was unrelatable for me. But that's just me.

Sarah Sutton has done it again! 🩷✨

When Sarah said she was writing her next book and it was going to be more of Aaron Astor's story after LAOCP, I was definitely curious how it would go 👀 but shout out to whoever said they wanted Aaron's love story because this book is so good! 🩷✨ it's the perfect continuation to the world Sarah had already brought to life and I loved getting to know Aaron and his backstory more and meeting Lovey, too, of course ☺️ no spoilers, but I loved seeing how their love story unfolded through all the twists and turns in this book and how both Lovey and Aaron grew as characters over the entirety of it 🥹 the tropes in this book aren't ones I'd normally read right away, but Sarah's writing is always so good and really draws you in, making you want to keep reading and pulling at all of your emotions 🥰 if you're looking for your next sweet, cute, no-spice-but-definitely-has-swoon read, I know you'll love The Princess and The Fraud too! 🥹🩷✨

My heart is beating so fast. Lovisa and Aaron are going to be a part of me for a long time. This is a story I’m going to revisit again and again. And can I be honest I hated Aaron in love and other champagne problems oh my gosh I disliked him and when I saw that he was the main character in this I was like oh boy how is this going to go. Brilliantly Sarah masterfully made these character come alive and place you in their shoes. I won’t lie I cried I genuinely cried during this book. I got insanely angry at times and so proud in other moments. I loved the music references as well and I highly recommend this book and am so sad I finished it I wish I could read it like it’s the first time reading it again.

I do love a short king named Aaron

These two had me so frustrated but god i love them dearly. the angst? the FEELINGS? the setting? so well done everything about the way this was written is so refreshing and unique. I love a book that makes me feel and this one felt like my heart was about to give out every time they interacted. my chest was constantly aching for them and let's not talk about what that elevator scene did to me. they were idiots but they were my precious idiots.
Lovisa and Aaron had their flaws, they made mistakes, but they grew and learned so much and it was beautiful to see. I can't stop gushing.

I’ve read all of Sutton’s previous books and loved them all for different reasons, but this one hit different. This one felt like coming home, and being wrapped up in a warm hug that pulled you along through the trials and pitfalls, making you fall in love with a character that you’d previously not liked. I adored Lovey, the relatable part of her, the pain, the angst, and the way she came out of her shell and stood on her own. Sutton always has a way of making you root for the characters, for their love, and this time it was a delight to sink into the pages and just lose myself in this romance. Very much recommended and one that I can see myself going back to read again and again.

My mom asked to read this book after me because she said she knew it must be good because I kept laughing out loud.

Honestly this book is even better than the first one; Sarah Sutton is becoming a better writer with each new book. My favorite character was probably Paige, but they were all really good. I loved how complex all the characters were— being lovable but imperfect and leaving room to grow.

The only thing I didn’t like is that it was only 494 pages (that includes the bonus POVs because I had the special edition) but like seriously, she couldn’t have written 6 more pages?

Absolutely loved this book and pretty much binged it. I loved seeing the softer side of Aaron Astor and finding out why he was the way he was had my heart going out to him. Lovey was a brilliant FMC. Determined, loyal and willing to put Aaron in his place. The elevator scene was amazing. With the proposal and Grant showing up and Jealous Aaron. The epilogue and him calling her "Love". Swoon. Everything was just done so well. Looking forward to the next book by Sarah.

This was a warm hug! I loved it soo much!! I did start a little slow but was worth the wait!!! If you love music you’ll love this book too! It was a like a beautiful concerto that I had a front row seat to! The plot was soo good and I loved that it wasn’t your typical MOC! I laughed and cried and swooned and got mad a couple times and all of the emotions were there and perfect!!
Definitely worth the read!!!!

Enemies to lovers ❌️
Enemies and lovers ✅️

whoever said that you can't write true enemies to lovers in a contemporary romance should read this book.

honestly, when I first heard that there was going to be a book about Aaron Astor, I was worried I wouldn't like him, even after his redemption arc, but I liked how Sutton make him still being a jerk in the beginning of the book, and followed his whole redemption arc.

I love Sarah Sutton and her books, especially the Luxuries of Love series. This follow up did not disappoint. I couldn't put it down. The various comparisons of what was happening in the text to famous compositions was beautiful. I don't even know most of the music mentioned, but it was a beautiful way to describe what was going on. The characters are flawed and beautiful. A+, just read it.

The emotions I felt during this book. A roller coaster. The witty banter, the just “shut up and kiss already” moments. As someone who has lost a parent, it can be difficult to want to do things for yourself has opposed to living only for them. Lovisa and Aaron showed us you can do anything and you are your own person.

AMAZING!!! I’ve read almost every books this author has written, and I’m never disappointed. Aaron Hottie Astor STOLE my heart, and his redemption arc is beautifully done. And Lovey??? I adored her POV. As a musician, the way Sarah wove in music was beautifully done! I can’t wait for her next release!!

Captivating

I loved this book. The character development and personal arc for each of the main characters is gripping. I loved that they both have their own personal discoveries while really seeing each other. The author does a great job at pulling you into their lives. The twists and turns killed me along the way but the ending was so satisfying. Highly recommend!
