The Heart of Eternity has chosen, and Kaia Draven's life just got even more complicated. Now she's not just managing her growing shadow army (featuring one militant commander, one obsessive note-taker, and a cat with serious authority issues)—she's also bound to five dangerously powerful men, each claiming a different part of her heart and magic.
But when a mission into Absentia reveals dark truths about ancient bonds and the price of her bloodline, Kaia must face an impossible choice. Something is still missing from the pattern of power connecting them all—and the ache in her chest suggests she knows exactly what it is.
As corruption spreads and ancient forces stir, Kaia will have to decide who she can trust—because saving the realms may mean confronting the one bond she’s tried hardest to deny.
Welcome back to Arcanum Academy—where the magic is deadly, the politics are deadlier, and falling for five dangerously devoted mages might be the deadliest thing of all.
Perfect for fans of dark academia romantasy who love complex magic systems, found family, and slow-burn "why choose" romance. Shadows Rising features MMFMMM relationships, snarky shadows, and enough sexual tension to power a small city.
Zora Stone writes steamy fantasy romance where magic has attitude, found family matters as much as found love, and humor is the secret ingredient in every spell. A lifelong dreamer with a wild imagination and a serious coffee addiction, she believes the best stories happen when magic collides with reality, and romance sneaks in through the cracks.
When she’s not conjuring tales of magical mayhem and emotionally complicated relationships, you’ll find her negotiating with her cat (who insists the keyboard is their throne), debating the wisdom of “just one more chapter,” or reminding her kids that ice cream counts as dinner.
Zora lives in the Midwest with her two kids, one judgmental cat, and an ever-growing collection of half-empty coffee mugs.
Shadows Rising is a good follow-up to Zora Stone's Shadows of Change. Finally, we get to the romance. In the first book, there were hints but nothing solid. Now there's romance, and wouldn't you know it, it's freaking tragic. It started off well, but things went wrong soon after. Someone messes up, big time, which causes a ripple effect. Insecurities are passed around like party favors, and the guys have completely lost it. It was so frustrating; there was no stable ground. I am hoping things go better in the next book. I mean, they can't get worse. Just kidding, because anyone who's read any type of fantasy knows things can always get worse, but we love it anyway.
I enjoyed the story. Things were a little confusing, but I don't know if it was just me. The timeline seemed a little wonky, and I could use a little clarification on some things. Other than that, it was good. People really do get twitchy when someone's power is revealed. That's how Kaia and the guys ended up in the destroyed realm of Absentia. Through this journey, I better understand "the corruption." We also learn a little more about this world and gain more information about Kaia's past. The story went by fairly quickly and ended on a good cliffhanger. My interest is piqued. I'm curious about what's going to happen next in Shadows Found.
Now that the Heart of Eternity has chosen, Kaia Drayen's life has gotten even more complicated.
Kaia's not only just managing her growing shadow army (an army that features one militant commander, one obsessive note-taker, and a cat with some serious authority issues) – but Kaia is also bound to five dangerously powerful men, each one who is claiming a different part of her heart and her magic.
When Kaia and her army go on a mission into Absentia they learn a truth about ancient bonds and the price of Kaia's bloodline. Kaia now has to face an impossible choice. She knows that something is still missing from the pattern of power that is connecting all of them – and there's an ache in Kaia's chest that suggests that she already knows what it is.
Now a corruption is spreading and ancient forces are stirring, now Kaia has to decide who she can trust – because Kaia knows that in order to save the realms may mean she confronts the one bond she's tried the hardest to deny.

Shadows Rising is the 2nd book in the Arcanum Academy series by Zora Stone. This series is leaving me heartbroken. Everyone is just so stubborn and there is so much miscommunication it's not even funny. If everyone would just start talking to each other it would just make things so much easier for everyone.
I love our main characters, I love their personalities, I love their developments, their arcs, I love everything about them. They continue to grow and change and I just keep falling in love with them over and over again. The only one I have questions about is Darian, something is going on with him and I feel like he's up to something.
The shadows continue to be as cute and lovable as ever. I love how each shadow has a different personality. And the shadows aren't just blobs or tendrils, they feel integrated, they feel more individual and I feel like I want to know more about each shadow as an individual. I loved how we got to meet a new shadow in this book – HI Walter! We still have Bob and Mouse and I love them but I still love getting to meet new shadows and I feel like they are important and they are so loveable and I feel like they are characters themselves.
We get to see so many changes in the group dynamics in this book and I can't wait to see how it all continues to play out in the story in the next book.
If you haven't already picked up this series I highly suggest you start this one ASAP, it will be greatly enjoyed by one and all. Zora Storm is a talented author and I can't wait to see more from this author.
Shadows Rising is the 2nd book in the Arcanum Academy series by Zora Stone. I loved the first book and just devoured it and now here I am having just devoured the 2nd book in the series and I loved it just as much. I love Zora Stone as an author. I love her writing style and I find that her character creation and character development is right on par.
Shadows Rising picks up right where Shadows of Change left off. Kaia has remembered what she is. Now Kaia faces a reality that there is more to her story and her history than it seems.
I found this book to be on the dark and heavy side. Kaia, Malrik, Finn, Aspen, and Torric have to work together to prove that Kaia doesn't pose any kind of threat and they are forced to travel to a realm that Malrik would rather forget even existed.
It is in this realm that Kaia meets someone new who she doesn't remember but who has known Kaia forever, it's after learning what this guy and her guys are to each other, she has trouble forgiving him for what he's put her and Malrik, Finn, Aspen and Torric through.
One of Kaia's biggest struggles in this book is her ability to communicate. There are so many moments that I just want to slap her and tell her that she needs to communicate and explain herself a lot better because her guys are quickly losing it. Yes, I loved that she built stronger connections with some of her guys because she was open and communicating. But, she was failing and her bond with the other guys was failing because she just didn't think or feel like she really needed to open up and talk to the guys and express what she was thinking or feeling.
In my personal opinion, I think that Zora was setting up for the next book and what's to come. We know that Professor Thorne and his insane leaders are all chasing after Kaia. And I do think that when it all goes down it's going to be explosive because the ending of this book was a lot to take.
I loved this book and I can't recommend this book enough. I want to say so much more about this book, but then what's the point of you reading it for yourself? Just go and read this book or both the first and second books if you haven't started this series already.
I am so ready for the next book and I am so pumped to see what happens next and where Kaia and her guys go next and how it all ends.
We dive right back in as soon as Shadows of Change concludes. Kaia remembered what she was and is faced with the reality that there is still so much more to her story and her history than meets the eye.
In my opinion, this felt really dark and heavy in a way. Kaia, Malrik, Finn, Aspen, and Torric are forced to prove that Kaia isn't a threat and travel to a realm that Malrik would rather forget. There, Kaia is introduced to someone new who has known Kaia forever, but after learning what he and her guys are to each other, she can't quite forgive him for what he has put her and the guys through. Kaia struggles with communication a lot in this book. At times, I wish I could shake her and say that she needs to explain herself better because these poor guys are slowly losing it. I loved that she was forming stronger connections with some but then kind of losing it with others simply because she didn't feel like expressing her thoughts.
I personally think that this book was setting the stage for what's to come because we all know that Professor Thorne and his leaders are all after Kaia. I have a feeling that it's going to be explosive because that ending was a lot.
I could say so much more, but I just want you to experience this for yourself.
I'm excited to see what's next.
Thank you so much, Zora and your lovely team, for the opportunity to read this story. I am forever grateful 🙏

I really enjoyed the continuation of Kaia's story. I'm definitely looking forward to the moment where Kaia becomes self confident in herself and in the bonds she shares with her men. I know circumstances and threats are against them and it has definitely helped with her character development so far. The plot has kept me intrigued all the way through, the little twists making the ongoing story more interesting. I enjoy the personalities of all the men too. The shadows' personalities is one of my favourite things about this series and adore Bob as the leader of the shadow army.
I feel Finn is going through the most character development right now as he struggles to find his place amongst the bonds and with Malrik and Kaia's connection growing stronger. I look forward to Finn's growth and finding his place. Torric and Aspen are also struggling with accepting their new heritage. Kieran is still the most mysterious apart from being a part of Kaia's childhood before the tragedy and curious on finding out more of his personality and seeing him grow closer with Kaia in the next book. Plus the mystery with Damien still afoot, the next book has me excited!
Can't recommend this series enough as an interesting read!
Book 2 in this series has left me heartbroken. The absolute stubbornness and miscommunication made this one hard to get through for me - just because it’s so hard to read both sides and understand both their POVs, BUT THEY WON’T TALK TO EACH OTHER.
I continue to love our main characters more and more (even if some of them make me want to scream sometimes). But Darian still has me questioning what he’s really up to.
The shadows are as adorable as ever. I love that they have such different personalities! They aren’t just blobs or tendrils, but integrated in a way that makes you want to know about each individual shadow. We also got to meet new shadows - HI WALTER! Of course, Bob and Mouse are still my favourites, but honestly I love the shadows as important, loveable characters.
So much happened within the group dynamic in this book, but I can’t wait to see how it affects the story moving forward!
There is so much turmoil and everyone's feelings are all over the place. And with the corruption spreading and all the unknowns trying to help an evil god take over, it was a lot.
Shadows Rising starts off with Kaia and the guys going on a mission into Absentia. This is a dangerous trip and it will cause their bonds to be pushed to the limits...the strain might be too much for some. And Kaia is still trying to figure out her place and what her shadows can do. Can she stop the corruption? Can she fight the ancient evil that wants to use her to be free? Can she really trust that she has any choices in her life or has everything been chosen for her?
There is a lot of emotional unrest in Shadows Rising. It made my heart hurt in several places. And there were a few times I wanted to smack Kaia upside the head. If she's not careful the choice will be taken from her.
After gaining back her memories and discovering she is a Valkyrie in the last book, we jump straight back into Kaia’s story as she struggles with her new powers and the distrust from the academy board.
Travelling into the contaminated Absentia is supposed to prove she isn’t the danger they think she is. When they meet someone from her past, more of her history is brought to light and bonds are forced on the team instead of allowing to occur naturally.
This book was abit darker than the first one. There is a lot of angst and self doubt. Kaia’s drive to do things herself means she pulls away from her bonds and puts up walls as she refuses to talk about things.
I did struggle with the story abit at the start but glad I pushed through. I can see things are being set for a big fight in the next book so hopefully Kaia and the team pull together to overcome the darkness
DAMN. This book messed me up. (In the best ways because I know that great storytelling, resolutions, and romance is coming in the following book/s of the series).
When I started reading this book, I did not expect so many moments to rip my heart out!!! These poor guys keep beating themselves up, and Kaia is just a pawn in some other people’s twisted ideas. I am someone who loves to highlight chunks of text that just explain so much and are heart wrenching and that flow in a lyrical way, and I highlighted a lot of those in this book.
In this book, there are some new interesting characters and progressing relationships. I loved it all and WISH I had the next book/s to be able to finish the series and find out what happens.
I would still consider this series a slower burn, but it is so good and the emotion in the writing adds to it for me.
Shadows Rising is the second book in the Arcanum Academy series.
I really liked the first book and was excited to read this one! Overall, I enjoyed it, but the amount of miscommunication was kind of wild. Not gonna lie it got a little irritating. All they had to do was talk to each other!!
That said, the characters and especially shadows are still as lovable as ever, and they continue to be one of the best parts of the story!
Despite the frustrations, I had a good time reading this and I’m looking forward to what comes next ^^
This book took off right from where book one ended and it was such an emotional reading ride. These characters, while fab and I loved getting their POVs, are so stubborn and just don't communicate well with each other. You know so much would be resolved/avoided if they'd just talk to each other...sigh.. I really love the shadows and their unique personalities. They added good lightness to balance out the tension, making it a page turner. I'm definitely anxious to read the next book to see how things continue to unfold for Kaia and her men. Good fun!
I know this book is about so much more than relationships but the difficulty created in this book by the characters for themselves was just aggravating. Maybe this is a young adult series because I was just getting more and more aggravated with their actions. The first half of the book I really had to push through then it got bearable and really good only for the last of it to be ughhh. This is a very good concept and I want to know how it all ends, hopefully I can survive through getting there.
Good read, just took me some time to figure out all the moving pieces even with reading Shadows of Change right before. The bond that is growing through all of them is amazing and you can feel the give and take, and the stressors each of them have. You can see the bond in each relationship needs to be nurtured individually and as a team. I feel like once all members of the bond are working together and not against each other like some of them are in this book it will be better.
But this book ends too quickly. On the positive side, I greatly appreciate the summary in the beginning however this feels like an interlude or the first half of book 2. The issue is that nothing is resolved in this book. There are a bunch of open plot points that aren't addressed, new characters with no history and memories that are conveniently recovered out of nowhere.
I would wait until the series is done because no I'm annoyed
Bob is still my favourite shadow, and the shadow antics kept me giggling throughout the book. Which is good because the rest of the story made my stomach tense into knots. The bonds form and fracture, my heart broke for Finn and also, in a strange way, Darian. There are so many people working against them, I’m not sure how they’ll survive it.
Oh the chaos and calamity!! The shadows are back and doing their best to keep it together. Kaia and her guys are having a tough go of it in this book. You really feel for them! I can’t decide if I want to hug Finn or strangle him; it’s a really fine line. I loved getting to see more development of the characters. Once I started reading, the pages flew by. Can’t wait for book 3!!
This second book was emotional and quite heavy as bonds are fractured and formed for Kaia and her men when they travel to Absentia and Kaia meets someone from her past. There's a lot of angst and mystery about Darian. The shadows were just so adorable and funny. Looking forward to the next book.
the excitement was really hard to contain while reading this, the shock and awe of the adventure of kaia, the boys and the shadows, I didn't want it to end!!
