Now Lee is free from the malevolent ghost of Morris Hawke, his clairvoyant gifts are expanding fast. Too fast for comfort, and he and Gideon find themselves wrestling with his unsettling capacity to see the future. In some ways this new power is wonderful, and Lee finds himself a local hero after predicting a flood.

But there’s one aspect he can’t bear, and that’s the blind spot he sees when he thinks about the wedding plans he and Gideon have started to make. It’s as if this event, which he wants more than life, simply isn't going to happen. He’s troubled and stressed out, and Gideon decides to intervene, whisking him off to an isolated creek-side cabin in the mysterious Cornish ria country. All is peaceful there, and the clamour in Lee’s head subsides. It’s time for companionship, peace, good food and plenty of sex...

Then a young man wanders out of the woods and turns their blissed-out retreat into chaos. Kitto is harmless – a charming drifter, very handsome. To Gideon he’s just a kid, flesh and blood and a bit of a nuisance. But Lee reacts with horror. Since when can Gideon – Lee’s rock, his connection to the real world and sanity – see ghosts?

Mysterious midsummer is rising in the deep green Cornish countryside, and as the village gears up for the eerie Golowan festival, Lee and Gideon face their toughest case yet: a battle between the real and spirit worlds that threatens to tear their own apart.

Harper Fox is an M/M author with a mission. She’s produced six critically acclaimed novels in a year and is trying to dispel rumours that she has a clone/twin sister locked away in a study in her basement. In fact she simply continues working on what she loves best– creating worlds and stories for the huge cast of lovely gay men queuing up inside her head. She lives in rural Northumberland in northern England and does most of her writing at a pensioned-off kitchen table in her back garden, often with blanket and hot water bottle.

She lives with her SO Jane, who has somehow put up with her for a quarter of a century now, and three enigmatic cats, chief among whom is Lucy, who knows the secret of the universe but isn't letting on. When not writing, she either despairs or makes bread, specialities foccacia and her amazing seven-strand challah. If she has any other skills, she's yet to discover them.

holy shitballs this is excellent.

not just clever plotting and crafty pacing and authentic-feeling and -acting gay male characters with sensible motivations, but seriously effective heartstring-tugging.

maybe even a little too much with the tugging.

probably. with the denouement, and with kitto, and then with the other denouement, with the sister, and the everything...

fuck.

at least two things in this probably need some kind of trigger warning, but w.e., it's still the best-written of the four books to this point in the series.

*hollow-eyed look*

oh, yeah. definitely.

i've been harper foxed directly in the feelz.

also the groin, bcuz crazy hot sex.

but let's stay with the feelz.

and then you eat them all anyway?

yeah, well.

Reread November 2022

Oh man...I'm glad I'm rereading this series. I've forgotten how creepy they are and just how much I love them.

Reread April 2019

Even though I know what's going to happen in this series, it still creeps me out. But I love every minute of it even on reread.

Originally read August 2018

OMG, these books! This is one of the best damn series I've read. I am absolutely in love with Lee and Gideon and their families.

I spent this whole book going back and forth about Kitto...not giving anything away about him, but up until the reveal, I absolutely had no clue which way it would go. Harper Fox truly wove a thread of doubt, only to throw it another way that left me wondering how it would play out. This one wasn't as "creepy" as the others in my opinion, but it was no less a mystery and I still had shivers at times trying to figure out the truth. It was just bloody amazing!

Lee and Gideon are definitely one of my all-time favorite couples. I've said before they have ups and downs, but they talk and work it out. I can't wait to see what these two get into next. Seems like they may have a new addition to the family.

4.3 Stars - Woot, these are just better and better. My love!

Book #4

Continued our winter series-buddyread (with Sofia). Once again a interesting part (maybe the best so far) by this talanted Harper Fox. She truly creates magic. — Love, love, love these boys.

Cornwall, south England, UK

The Tyack & Frayne series is so far six shorter (75-150 pages) novella episodes in the M/M mystery genre with a new mysterious "case" in every part. In essence, however much focus on the development of the romance between these men. ~ Characters, my reviews:

Midsummer (Golowan in Cornish language) and time for a needed vacation in the very south of Cornwall. Our men are planning for their soon to be wedding and need some alone time. As always are they also struggling with all those odd spooky things as always seems to surrounding them. — Is it possible to see the future? Or already dead people? Not sure.

But it isn't just a dance on roses. To be in a relationship can be hard even if you sincerely love..
 photo image.jpg1_zpsbltbhovz.jpg

“....but if it was the other way round—if I’d started turning into a policeman for some unknowable fucking reason—I wouldn’t walk into your squad room and ignore everything you told me about how to do it.”
Gideon tried to follow this through. Then he got it. Lee was the qualified sergeant here, Gideon the rookie who’d shattered the rules. The analogy only worked so far, though, and Gideon was past his limits. “Point taken,” he rasped.’

 photo image_zpsdif9mtwg.jpeg

It all ended grand and lovely.. 'course
In Kittowe got it all. A healthy dose of excitement (a bit scary), odd paranormal stuff and as always a feeling of the beautiful fairytale like Cornwall. There is heat, steam and intensity, strong emotions and grand fantastic romance. What a wonderful ending...
“This is it, isn’t it?”
“This is it. The big one. Don’t you dare start crying now.”

 photo image.jpg1_zpsbltbhovz.jpg

I was once again captivated and really look forward to reading book #5-Guardians of the Haunted Moor as soon as possible.

I LIKE - Oh yes I do!

There is something extra hot about well established men with big professional jobs and older-man-energy, that just SPEAKS TO MY SOUL. And my babies are getting marriedddddddddddd!!

And I don't know what it is but the FIGHTS THESE TWO HAVE ARE JUST FUCKING AWESOME AND REALISTIC AND THEN THEY FUCKING APOLOGISE 👏EXACTLY👏 HOW👏THEY👏ARE👏SUPPOSED👏TO👏 AND THEN HAVE REALLY FUCKING HOT MAKE UP SEX SESSIONS AND 👏I AM ABOUT IT 👏

it's at the point that I kinda want them to fight so they can say all the super romantic angry stuff and I can swoon over them again and again....

My fave silly goose quote:
"We could try... talking to eachother I suppose? Even about the bad stuff." Gideon nodded, they'd had little practice at that. Their enemies had lain outside of themselves, their time together so intense that few internal conflicts had seen the light of day.
"Seems pretty radical... But okay" 😏😏😏

This one is quite the paradox.

It is both the most disturbing and the most optimistic, almost as if Fox decided there needed to be equilibrium for the readers. Gideon and Lee are plowing forward with their lives, sucking the marrow from the bones when an unexpected event twists their lives around. The fear, the discord, and the horror surrounding the pageantry of Midsummer adds a very dark theatricality to the peace Gideon and Lee have sought. An enticing end pulls me along in its eddy, off to book #5.

This is a very binge worthy series, in a quiet kind of way. The communication between these two is bloody hot as fuck 🔥. They have realistic argument’s, are grumpy at each other for a bit and then they apologise and make up and for some weird reason I really like it! The mystery wasn’t my favourite, I found myself drifting in the middle but overall this was another lovely instalment. Definitely higher heat in this one too 🤭.

When last we saw these two gents, Lee was finally able to get rid of a spiritual albatross that had hung around his neck for years, freeing up a latent capacity to actually see more than just impressions or connections. Such a power can be thrilling but very scary as well, especially when his “sight” is not reliable or predictable.

In an effort to lessen his stress, Gideon whisks Lee away to a remote area for some much needed R&R. While there, both encounter a spirit that not only reinforces the changes Lee is undergoing but possibly means that Lee is slowly affecting Gideon as well. With conflicting opinions and interpretations about the spirit’s validity, it’s the very first for these two to have such a heated disagreement.

Thankfully, passion is never short, nor is their love ever lacking. Even in anger and frustration, both Lee and Gideon fret and worry, always putting the other first. Again the paranormal aspect is always a bit nebulous to me, but what is always crystal clear is how much these two will do for the other, and how deep their feelings run. This time around the heat level went up a notch, as the sensuality and intimacy were oh-so-nice. Of course this ends with both Gideon and Lee further solidifying their devotion to each other with a bit of a game changer thrust upon them! I eagerly look forward to seeing what’s next in store for this lovely duo!

I’m still quite enjoying this series.

In this Gideon and Lee are trying to have a relaxing holiday before their wedding. But of course it’s not quite as relaxing as they thought it would be when Lee sees the ghost of a young man. But what’s even weirder is that Gideon can see him too. Of course Gideon is convinced the young man is no ghost.

Lee is mad at Gideon for not believing him, and Gideon can’t figure out why Lee is so determined to prove the boy is dead when Gideon is sure he is alive.

So Gideon just has to investigate to prove Lee wrong….

These two are still wonderful together. They had their first fight in this, but only grew closer because of it.

I liked the mystery of the missing boy, Kitto, and was very curious to see what happened to him.

So far this is still a very intriguing paranormal series with lots of creepy moments (not so creepy in this instalment though). And I just love Gideon and Lee.

I love Gideon and Lee more and more with each passing book 🥰 Gideon's voice has finally grown on me in the audio, and I'm churning through these bad boys like no one's business 🤣 It was lovely seeing these two already married and not having to wait until the end of the series. I'm on to the next one and looking forward to seeing how the surprise at the end of this one plays out in the next 💙

I’m not sure if Kitto was any better than the other books in this series that I’ve only rated 4 stars, but I’m giving this one 5 stars anyway. When I finished the first book, I wasn’t sure how into the series I’d be, but with each book, my enjoyment grows. Fox keeps it fresh with not only with each new mystery but with the evolution of Gideon and Lee’s relationship with each other and with their individual growth as well.

This series keeps getting better. I love Harper Fox in all her styles, but if you are one of the readers who didn't like her most wonderfully lyrical books (like Scrap Metal or Brothers of the Wild North Sea) for their slower pace, this is the series for you.

Lee is a psychic, who has been good enough to earn a living at it but who has also tangled with some dark spirits and situations. He was recently freed from his link with a malevolent ghost of the past, and since then his gifts have been expanding. Gideon is a policeman who became entangled in Lee's cases and fell in love with him. These two men have a sweet, solid partnership, but one of the pleasures of this book is that they didn't always agree and have perfect harmony. If anything, they felt more real for the occasional argument or doubt.

These books each contain a paranormal-tinged mystery. In this case, Lee and Gideon head off on holiday to a remote and supposedly electromagnetically-blank area to see if the peace and quiet might give Lee some relief from his rapidly-expanding powers. But early on, they encounter a happy, tanned young man near their cabin, who may or may not be solid flesh-and-blood. And the question of whether Gideon might be starting to see ghosts himself bothers each of them, in different ways.

The mysteries in this series do have a common thread, which benefits a trigger warning. But they are not heavily dark in tone. The two men are great characters, their interactions are warm and sexy, and the whole story moves at a faster clip than usual for this author. It would have been great to have this as a novel or bundle, rather than a series of separate novellas (a trend I'm finding more common, and expensive), but at least each one of this series has a good story arc and a definite solid conclusion without cliffhangers, and this is an author I will buy without question. There is a hint at the end that there will be a new direction for this couple, and I have high hopes of seeing that story in the future. Recommended for mystery and paranormal fans.

Needing a much deserved break from the mystery and madness of the last eight months, Gideon takes Lee away for a short reprieve from all things preternatural. At least, this is the plan until an enigmatic young man, named Kitto, shows up at their holiday cabin asking for their help.

The conflict and mystery here lies in the fact that Lee and Gideon are at odds as to the ‘status’ of their young guest. Where Lee is adamant that Kitto is a ghost, Gideon is unconvinced, after all, he can see Kitto himself, clear as day, and only Lee is meant to have any sort of gift of sight into the spirit world.

This discrepancy of opinion definitely throws a spanner in the works of their relationship, which (mind-blowingly) until now has never been tested by any sort of lovers quarrel or disagreement. So, on top of working through their personal issues, Gideon and Lee feel compelled to solve the mystery of who Kitto is, and if he is, in fact, living or dead.

I really enjoyed this installment, especially in terms of the mystery surrounding Kitto. I liked his character, however brief his scenes were, and I was chomping at the bit to get to the end so I could find out if he was actually dead or alive.

I also liked the fact that Lee and Gideon finally face some challenges in their relationship, because as they themselves state, until this point everything between them has been smooth (ridiculously loved-up and happy) sailing.

My favourite aspect of this series is how atmospheric these stories are. I’ve never been to Cornwell, but man do I feel like I have simply from the vivid picture painted herein. The dialogue is also embracive – I may not understand half of what is being said, but that doesn’t stop me from loving how authentic it feels as a result.

Overall, this was another solid chapter in this delightfully spooky and romantic little series.

P.S. I could have done without the abrupt ending .

re-read.

While still a 5* read - I love these guys - I didn't like this as much as the previous books.

The drama here is all from conflict between pragmatic copper Gideon and psychic Lee. They're getting married which is a huge step for them and stress is bringing every niggle to the surface. What I loved about the previous books was the deep trust building between the two that weathered all circumstance; in this book their differences, fears and expectations are tearing them apart. I did like how they got over their squabbles, the make-up sex and talking, it felt real and solid, but still it seemed a step backwards when they've already faced down monsters together. I shared Lee's worry over Gideon channelling powers. Perhaps it's needed, the challenge to who they are and what they believe, but it's not quite as satisfying.

Loved Methodist minister Ezekiel, taking his gay brother's boyfriend to buy a wedding ring. It's nice to see religion not being the enemy. He's strong in his beliefs but also sees people.

This mystery doesn't seem urgent, the drama between the couple taking the spotlight from it, but there's heart-wrenching moments once it gets going.

I found once the mystery is solved the book became less fluid, things come together a little too neatly. Regarding the mystery Interested in what this means for Lee's 'gift' and what'll come next for them as a couple.

Blooper - Lorna focus of the first book became Laura not once but for the whole of this book.
--
The cover doesn't strike the same mood as the ones to this point, I missed the foggy images. It makes more sense once you've read the book but doesn't have the same pull.

Both the story lines were good. I did roll my eyes a bit at that ending. But I like Gideon and Lee too much to begrudge them what they desire and I think Ms Fox will come to convince me in the next episode.

Once again, Tim Gilbert does a good job with Gideon and Lee. I was a little disappointed though that right until the end, Lorna Kemp [from Once Upon a Haunted Moor] was called Laura, and Ray Tregear's 'voice' also changed after Gid and Lee's wedding from growly and stoned to high-pitched and weird. I thought people were paid to keep an eye out [or should that be an ear 🤔] for these things but obviously not 😕... I've dropped my overall rating for the story accordingly.

Weird pagan rituals, sinister burials, weddings and babies...what more could you ask for?? Loved it.

Breathtaking!!!!

This series is getting better and better, very well constructed, everything tight, I really enjoyed Tyack and Frayne's bond, how the relationship grows, love the mystery case, the spooky environment, the comedy, "Cornish born, Cornish bred..." :-D. I was conducted very nicely. The characters, again, rich and very interesting. Kudos to Harper Fox. I think this is my favorite book from this series!!!

I also listened on Audible, Tim Gilbert gives a really good performance, the characters have a very distinguish voices, but I do believe he should pay more attention to details, he mixed the voices of the main characters and that unfortunately breaks the whole fantasy that we are living in the moment.

Beautiful cover.

I have enjoyed this series very much, but this one... In some series wherein we have an established couple, often the action is reactive, and the couple grows just a bit as a team.

This pair have had to adjust each time, and in #3, it's very darned serious and upsetting and almost otherworldly at times. I bet if I'd known more about the oak and holly ritual, it would have meant even more to me, but even as it was, that scene had my hairs on end.

If you have not read this series, give it a try. I've loved every character so far, even the terrifying ones. The plots are great, the dialogue's wonderful. And they just keep getting better!

Audiobook review

4,5 stars

You know, I’d hate to disappoint Gideon, but I have to tell you his fears (maybe it was predictions?) might just come true after all, this series does have a "Midsomer Murders" feel to it. Only with a darker and creepier edge to it. And I just love it, can't get enough, which is why I've been binging this series. I dare you not to.

To relieve Lee of some of the stress his growing power is causing him, Gideon whisks him away on a much needed holiday. They travel to an isolated cabin in the Cornish ria country for some much needed peace and quiet.

But if you've come this far into the series, you know that where Gideon and Lee goes, trouble is never far away. They have a habit of stumble into situations they never dreamed about. Their country vacation is no different.

Not all monsters are supernatural, some of them are real, and no one knows this better than Kitto, the beautiful young man no one but Gideon or Lee seems to be able to see...

I felt like the relationship between Gideon and Lee was solidified a lot more than in the previous books. The "honeymoon phase" was over and they needed to deal a bit more with the difficulties relationships brings, all the ups and downs and curve-balls that are thrown at them. Not all of which Lee can foretell. But through it all they do stand strong together and there's no mistaking the love and devotion they both feel for each other.

Tim Gilbert does it again. His narration makes Gideon and Lee come alive, he brings the creepiness and the haunted feelings Fox creates to your home. Just plain and simple, he's a great choice for narrating this series!

The trend of liking each book in this series a little more than the last continues! I loved the healthiness of Gideon and Lee's relationship. I loved their communication, or at least how they tried. How they wanted to know what was bothering the other. How they wanted to discuss things, even when it was hard. How, even when they fought, they immediately wanted to make things right. How they recognized that sometimes fights would happen, but they needed to learn to talk things through rather than blowing up, because fighting was awful for both of them. It's also nice to see a portrayal of an established relationship beyond the initial romance, to see the struggles and effort they put into maintaining their relationship, to see a relationship that isn't all roses and sunshine but is still adorable and sweet. There was a plot and stuff too---I think this one had the best plot yet, actually---including some mystery and some paranormal stuff, but it was the relationship that really shone this time. I could feel the heartbreak when they fought even though I knew they'd make up, I could feel the fear and tension about things, and, most of all, I could feel the emotion and love they had for each other. My thoughts on the audiobook narration can be found in my review of the first book. Overall, these are some great characters, a great relationship, and a great series!

I'm just loving the Tyack & Frayne series and each one gets just a little better. Atmospheric, romantic, sexy, funny, sappy at times, a touch of the supernatural and sleuthing, pretty much sums it up. Although I was tempted to take away a star for the horrible cover on the latest offering but that would be churlish. Recommended but do begin with the first in the series.

I shouldn't have read the blurb. I spent the first third of the book waiting for the thing to happen. I would have probably enjoyed it a lot more if I hadn't known everything.

Lee is having issues with his ability. It seems it is going wild. Now he sees the future too.
Kitto makes an appearance somewhere around 33% of the book! At first Gideon doesn't believe he is a ghost and that creates tension between him and Lee.

Regardless the all too revealing blurb, I liked the story a lot. The reason for all the troubles is really dark and disturbing. It doesn't even matter how it gets resolved. Some things are just too horrible to completely fix.

The ending is what you'd expect from all the preparations, but I could have done without Lee's sister's unexpected announcement.

Overall, I liked Kitto the most so far. it would be great if a character from this book could get a story of their own. Still, both Gideon and Lee have a lot to offer too.

Oh oh Lee & Gid are perfect together. I loved that in this one, they fight and have to work out ways to deal with this (make-up sex for the win!).

I loved the changing nature of Lee's psychic abilities and Gideon's rock-steady strength to deal with whatever may come.

The mystery was beautifully built into the narrative and romantic elements, and that end... it's a winner.

More? Yes, please, please yes. More.

This series continues to grow on me. One thing I love about is the tremendous sense of place. I feel like I'm in Cornwall with Lee and Gideon. Another thing I love -- how their relationship deepens and becomes stronger as the series progresses.

After the events at the very end of this, I'm very excited to see what come next!

Gideon and Lee are so wholesome, so sweet and loving, and like also surprisingly down bad horny all the time for each other. Love to see it. It was lovely to see them working on some healthy communication in their relationship.

Loved this one, although the mystery was kind of horrific. These little stories continue to deliver an atmospheric spooky punch.

I continue to dislike these covers though 😫

"I dunno, sweetheart. We might not be out of the woods yet.”
“How many times do I have to tell you?” Lee shifted round on the sofa and pounced, sending his chess pieces flying. “I like the woods.”

There's something so comforting and soft about this pair-despite whatever creepiness they face. Gideon's grounding and Lee's understanding. Fox's gorgeous and purposeful writing. It's just so wonderful to spend a couple hours with them.

"but—”
“Hush up. This is the one time when I’m telling you to let all your feelings and visions go and trust in my reality.”
