After reading the first book set on a cruise,’The Cruise’ ( funny enough ) I was keen to go straight into this follow up book, although it is the subject of cruising and cruises that is the follow on and not the characters we first met as aside from Dick Delaney, the crafty, sleazy ‘star’ comedian we meet a whole new set of travellers who for various reasons find themselves on this Med cruise..

Carmen ( author with writers block ); and Betty, her Mum,were my favourite characters…..Carmen,books the cruise as she sees her fav author, Ruskin Reeve,is doing a set of talks onboard and hopes to go alone,Betty has other ideas and demands to also go….she is terrible and rules Carmens life but you cant help but wonder what on earth she will say this time when you see her appear, she is a force to be reckoned with albeit a cruel one at times

Be prepared for the ‘Golden Oldies Meet Up’s’ 😀…………not quite as you might imagine……

As with ‘The Cruise’ a very funny and at times poignant read with fab descriptions of the ship, the food, the ports, onboard life and of course the wonderful people we find on board

As with ‘The Cruise’ it is an uplifting read and am really hoping for more cruising adventures in the near future from this author..l

I mean I know it’s targeted towards senior folks but it kinda felt like brainrot? The storyline is nonexistent, the mystery is nonexistent, romance - meh, but somehow stories (or the lack thereof) like this disable my brain and at least my crippling depression is cured temporarily 😀

On the road".

1 ⭐️

Having read the first book and really enjoyed it, I had no hesitation in picking up the second. Cruise entertainer, Dickie, is back and just as full of life along with some new cruisers. Although Carmen is the main character, it's her mum Betty who grabs the reader's attention - for all the wrong reasons. Betty is manipulative, demanding, rude and controlling so it's a miracle nobody pushed her overboard.

I enjoyed watching Carmen's transformation, as she gains in self-confidence, not only about her writing but also in herself.

Dastardly Dickie is up to his old tricks but manages to redeem himself at the end. With some naughty goings-on and a mystery to solve, this book is funny, life-enhancing and a damn good read.

There’s a couple on the Diamond Star this time – loud and obnoxious Don (from Halifax) in his lycra gear and his down-trodden wife Debbie taking refuge in drink – who I swear I came across on my last cruise too. And there are so many other characters I recognised including, unfortunately, the few passengers I encountered who were rather like Carmen’s mum Betty. And she so needed some time to herself – struggling to write her second cosy crime book, she really hoped she could learn from her writing hero, Ruskin Reeve, who’s on board as guest speaker. But Betty comes too – a constant drain on her time and energy, never saying thank you, determined not to enjoy any of the new experiences.

But, thank goodness, Carmen makes some good friends on board – Theo, a celebrity chef and the loveliest man (but no chance of romance…), and the wonderful Fran who we met through the French cookery school. Fran’s accompanied by husband Sid – they now have their fine dining restaurant in Blackpool – who’s totally made up to be spending time with one of his personal heroes too. And Fran’s as flamboyant and outspoken as ever – a few shopping trips together see Carmen ditching her shapeless and drab clothes and, despite Betty, finding new confidence and discovering all the fun that can be found.

It’s mainly Carmen’s story, and I was cheering her on at every turn. Ruskin’s not particularly likeable at first encounter, but takes Carmen under his wing – and there’s a nice frisson of attraction between them too. The words start to flow – around her need to attend to Betty’s every need, but with a little help from her friends – until things start to go a little less well for a while. And it’s all punctuated by the various on-board activities – I’m sure over-enthusiastic Kyle was managing everything poolside on my last cruise too – and all the shore excursions around the various ports of the Mediterranean, every destination fully explored and quite wonderfully described.

But there are a number of other stories that unfold in parallel. Perma-tanned and cocky comedian Dicky’s on board again, up to his usual tricks – but worried that he might not be such a regular fixture for much longer. Drag queen Melody’s rather stolen the spotlight – a character that was a real personal favourite – and they really don’t get on. And then there’s a bit of a mystery that unfolds, really worrying Peter who wanders the decks with his clipboard (yes, I think he was on my last cruise too!) – and he enlists Ruskin’s help to get to the bottom of it. And there are some rather interesting times ahead for Betty too – perhaps she’s not quite as attached to her wheelchair (or such a misery) as she makes out.

The characters are simply wonderful, and the whole book felt like spending time among friends – there’s lots of fun and laughter, but so many really touching moments too. And the Diamond Star’s itinerary couldn’t have been more perfect for me – I’ll be revisiting every port on my own cruise in a couple of month’s time, and it’s only made me even more excited about it. But thank you Caroline, I will learn from the pineapple experience – perhaps those tropical leggings I thought would be so ideal won’t be finding a place in my suitcase after all.

This really was the most perfect summer read – I raced through it, loved every single moment, and honestly couldn’t recommend it more highly. Bravo!

Although this is the sequel to "The Cruise" I was able to read this one without having read that with no trouble whatsoever and enjoyed it just fine. It is an uplifting read filled with characters of an older age which is always refreshing.
Carmen books the cruise as an escape from her overbearing mother when she sees her favorite author Ruskin is booked to speak onboard. Her mother has other ideas and decides to join her to Carmen's dismay. Once onboard. Carmen makes new friends who help her come out of her mother's shadow and find confidence in herself and her own writing. There's also a mystery to solve as a side and some naughtiness with the UPPC,
This story is like spending the afternoon with old friends-love and laughter and touching moments too along with all the amenities onboard a cruise ship.
This is a great vacation read anytime of year.
Thanks to Avon Books and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.

My Thoughts :
Having enjoyed Caroline Jame’s previous books, I was pleased to see we had another cruise offering. The story also featured previous characters like cruise entertainer Dicky Delaney from her book The Cruise.
We meet writer Carmen Cunningham, having had enough of looking after her annoying and needy mum Betty, she books a Mediterranean cruise on board the Diamond Star in the hope to get a break from her mum and to get her mojo back for the book she is currently struggling with writing.
Author Ruskin Reeve is due to do some workshops on the ship so she hopes attending his talks with inspire her.
Things dont always turn out for the best when her mum also books herself on the cruise and Carmen has no say in the matter.
As we follow carmen and her mum throughout the cruise, we meet many other passengers who turn out to be helpful to Carmen and even step in to lend a hand with Betty, husband and wife Sid and Fran, widowed Chef Theo and Debbie and Don, who is always putting his wife down.
What follows is a week filled with fun, laughter, friendships and romance. Such a great escape from day to day life and it will have you questioning if you yourself should pack your bags and take a cruise. Looking forward to more from Caroline James soon.

Another fun and lively story from Caroline James, bringing together a cast of interesting and realistic characters on a cruise for pensioners. Carmen is the main character- a writer of cosy crime who has missed her chance of love and a life of her own because of the overbearing and critical mother she feels obliged to look after. From fellow cruisers to guest speakers to the entertainment staff, there is s great mix of people here, each with their own problems, idiosyncrasies and secrets. Friendships are formed, romance blooms, and some lives are changed very much for the better.. I loved every minute of it.

The Cruise Club was a joy to read. With its group of loveable (albeit some less so than others) and quirky characters, I instantly fell into the story. The group felt like old friends I'd joined for a holiday. As we cruised through the Mediterranean, I enjoyed all the stops and descriptions, which were wonderfully immersive.

This was a real comfort read with well-written characters and beautiful settings.

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for an ARC. All thoughts are my own.

The Cruise Club by Caroline James is a fun story about a group of people on a Mediterranean Cruise hoping for new experiences that will help them make changes in their lives. Carmen Cunningham is a cozy crime author who is experiencing writer's block. Ruskin Reeve, an author she idolizes, will be doing workshops on the cruise, and she hopes this will help break through her block. Unfortunately, her overbearing mother, who demands her time and attention, is also going along on the cruise. There is a married couple who own a upscale restaurant, Fran and Sid Cartwright, who I first met in The French Cookery School. Throw in a comedian, Dicky Delaney, who is trying to restart his career, a drag queen, who is a wonderful singer, and a few more interesting passengers, and this is a cruise I would love to have been on.

I really enjoyed The Cruise Club and catching up with a few characters I liked from a previous book. This is not a series and you don't need to have read The French Cookery School. Fran took the class in that book, and now runs an upscale restaurant with her husband Sid. They are best friends, so in love, and they interfere in other's lives a bit to help them enjoy themselves and be the best they can be. Dicky is a bit jaded, and interacts with the audience well, especially when heckled. I wasn't a fan at the beginning of the book, but liked him by the end. I felt so bad for Carmen. Her mother Betty was an unhappy woman and it seemed her goal was to make Carmen's life miserable and put her down every chance she got. Carmen had been beaten down by her mother and gave in to her demands way too easily. When she attended the first workshop, she was fired up and ready to write again until her mother put a damper on it. I liked how Fran took her under her wing to help her come out from under her mother's shadow. There is some romance, some personal growth from various characters and some laughs. Although Carmen is the main character, I really enjoyed many of the other characters just as much. When Betty meets a man, I had some concerns about a con, but was I right? You will have to read this one to find out. A fun story, with great characters, and a cruise that I wish I had been a fly on the wall. If you enjoy a fun travel story, one with interesting characters and an uplifing story, then I recommend you pick up the Cruise Club.

The Cruise Club was for me an absolute joy to read . I had read Caroline’s previous book The Cruise and it was nice to see some familiar characters appearing in this new book . But The Cruise Club can be read as a standalone . Everything about this book, from the characters to the story was superb. As I progressed through the book I could actually picture myself being there on the cruise and visiting all the various locations. There were many laugh out loud moments for me . To sum up The Cruise Club is a lovely easy read and one that when you’ve finished reading will have you wanting to book a cruise. Simply wonderful ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The characters were charming, for the most part, and the locations visited on the cruise were lovely but the plot itself was too simple for my tastes. It was so simplistic in fact, that the plot barely existed. The thread of plot is that the main character, Carmen, is henpecked by her demanding, elderly mother, and decides to book a cruise featuring workshops with her favorite mystery writer. Her hope is that she'll get through her own writer's block as she's due to turn in her sophomore cozy mystery novel and she's severely struggling with it.
Her plans are immediately scuppered when her mother insists on booking the same cruise for herself.
Lots of set up for hijinks, yes? Unfortunately, no.
The book hops between the perspectives of several of the passengers and entertainers on the cruise. No one other than Carmen has any particular goal to accomplish, other than to enjoy the cruise. Each chapter reads as a description of how various characters pass their time on the cruise. There is no real plot to move forward, so there isn't much urgency to keep turning the pages.
Still, most of the characters are endearing in their own ways. Far and away my favorite characters were adorable married couple Fran and Sid, and recently widowed, Theo. Carmen and her mother, Betty, had a humorous vibe, but their contentious relationship wasn't explored as much as I would have liked.
It was fun to see how Carmen become friends with some of the other passengers. Also, if you're looking for a book that doesn't require much brainpower and is just like being an observer on a cruise, this book will be enjoyable.
The book takes a sharp turn into romance that doesn't really work. The love interests don't have much interaction together before suddenly realizing that they're head over heels for each other. There wasn't any evidence on the page, so it was hard to get on board with that. (No pun intended.)
The new friendships and the writing style are what really make this book.
I was able to finish the book even though the "mystery" aspect is extremely underdeveloped, as is the romance.
I did not love this book, but I didn't hate it either. I wanted more from it than it delivered. I would read another book by this author to see if her other work has stronger plotting. I've also learned that Fran and Sid appear in another of the author's books, so I may check that out to see that charming couple again.

I may have said it before, but I'll happily say it again - Caroline James and cruising is an irresistible combination.

And what a book this is, I definitely recall wanting more books featuring cruising from this author after finishing the Cruise and boy has this delivered, but honestly I still want more - and there are far more places cruises go other than the Med and Caribbean, so I'd like to think there could be more!

Speaking of the the author's previous cruise book ,this one is onboard the same ship, with a couple of returning staff members, but it is a totally brand new, and completely standalone story. But for anyone that has read it, the ship itself will feel like a familiar friend.

I was back into the rhythm of the Diamond Star really quickly and I loved getting to know all of the new highlighted guest on board.

What really struck me was the very tricky relationship between Carmen and her mother, and how if the pandemic hadn't got in the way, how the relationship between me and my mum may have turned out. I completely sympathised with Carmen - Betty is very demanding and tricky to deal with.

Thankfully Carmen actually makes friends on this cruise, which Betty had tagged along on, and she even gets to meet one of her writing heroes, Ruskin who is one of the guest speakers on the ship.

I was delighted to see that one of the main headliners on board is in fact a drag queen, I love drag and in my 9 or so cruises, I don't believe I've seen drag act at all onboard, which is a shame. But Melody is fabulous and although not a main character, there is still a good amount of depth to her as we got to know her through conversations with Dicky!

I absolutely loved the various ports of call on this ship, and ones that I have visited myself really felt very well described. There is so so much that I loved about this story, but I don't want to give anything away. But rest assured there are some very nice character arcs, there is some romance, some humour and some really touching moments too.

I couldn't have enjoyed this more and I was totally hooked on reading it and it's a perfect summer holiday read.

Thank you to Avon and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Cruising the MEDITERRANEAN

As the novel opens, Carmen Cunningham is dithering about booking a Mysteries of the Mediterranean cruise aboard the Diamond Star, a 900 berth ship. She fully intends to travel without her obnoxious and demanding Mother, embittered Betty, who at age 80 expects to be waited on hand and foot.

Sadly for Carmen, Betty elbows her way onto the cruise and thus the two women board their boat in Kefalonia. Carmen is particularly agog because Ruskin Reeve, a ‘ruggedly handsome’ silver fox is on board to share his wit and wisdom as an author. He pens the DI Blake mysteries and is on the look-out for inspiration. Carmen, a mature woman herself, is fairly recently published herself and she, too, is struggling with ideas. She cannot wait to meet him, her idol, in the hope of connection and inspiration. She does get to find out that “..an author’s greatest asset is persistence” which will hold her in good stead…

Goodness this boat attracts people with alliterative names, Melody Moon and Dicky Delaney and their banter, joshing and niggling provides some entertainment, both for the assembled passengers and for the reader. There is romance and drama aplenty, and a full gamut of emotions along the way, with all kinds of encounters and shenanigans. The fact that small items are going missing and the suggestion of a pineapple upside down club (don’t ask) add an element of intrigue to the story

Some snort-out-loud moments are balanced by cringeworthy behaviour. all par for the course given this cross-section of holidaymakers, crammed together on this relatively small boat.

The journey takes the motley band of cruisers from Kefalonia, through the Corinth Canal, to Rhodes, Crete, Malta, towards Sicily (Stromboli), Ibiza (with a visit to wonderful Dalt Vila!) and finally to Cartagena.

This is an upbeat and quick read that will whisk you around the Mediterranean.

Get ready to set sail on the Diamond Star and join our lovely characters in The Cruise Club for some fun, sun, soul searching and shenanigans!

Stuck in a rut and facing writers blog, cosy crime writer Carmen decides to be spontaneous and head off on a luxury cruise - alone! Except her overbearing mother has other ideas and tags along! What follows is a delightful tale of self discovery, family dynamics and friendships, plus beautiful settings, shows and food galore.

What you will find is pure escapism between the pages of this gem. The characters are brilliant, Betty especially. I can so envisage her, hear her comments and retorts and feel I’m cringing along with her daughter. All the characters are developed so well, and I loved the way they came together and friendships bloomed. In a short space of time friendships were made for life and people came together as a community to help and support each other.

Theo was another amazing character, while dealing with his own heartbreak he opens up and trusts others, giving assistance to them in ways only a best friend could. Theo is definitely someone you want in your life.

As much as I’d love to discuss all the main characters, you just need to jump on board and meet them all yourself.

The description of the cruise, where it sails and all the places that are visited are fantastic, you really will see yourself there among the characters, soaking up the sun and enjoying a cold beverage!

As Carmen and Fran head of shopping, it reminded me of a time I visited Rhodes and bought myself a dress in one of the many beautiful stores.

All in all this is a beautiful read to loose yourself in. Be ready for the many different (and sometimes slightly naughty!) adventures that happen in The Cruise Club!!

My Opinion

An uplifting and entertaining read. Caroline James has written a comforting novel with some great characters. With beautiful descriptions this was such an easy read. Pack your bags and join our characters on their cruise.

Carmen is an author struggling with writer’s block so she books a cruise when she sees that her favourite crime author, Ruskin Reeve will be holding workshops on board. Carmen is brow beaten by her Mother, Betty and needs a break but Betty gatecrashes the holiday by booking herself a room too.

I think this would be a lovely holiday read and the location descriptions were great so it really felt like I was on my travels too.

Unfortunately I found most of the characters dislikable, although I loved Theo, Fran and Sid. With their help Carmen undergoes a transformation and I liked seeing her flourish.

I enjoyed the blossoming new friendships more than the romance. I just didn’t feel like there was enough romantic build up. Carmen and Ruskin only meet a couple of times (and Ruskin is arrogant and rude on those occasions) but then the pair were suddenly head over heels without any evidence of how they got there.

There is also a mystery element with jewellery going missing but this part of the plot really isn’t explored as much as I was expecting.

It also has multiple POVs which change throughout each chapter so it wasn’t always clear which one I was experiencing.

It took a while for me to get into but it improved in the second half. However I was disappointed with how rushed the ending was.

If you’re looking for something lighthearted, and summery with a hint of romance and a mystery which you don’t have to think too much on you might really enjoy this.

Thank you Avon books for my copy.

The Cruise Club by Caroline James is a delightfully fun contemporary novel that will leave you smiling.
As the title suggests, the action is aboard a cruise ship in the Mediterranean. The atmosphere is light and fun-filled, with blue sky days and relaxing nights.
The reader revels in the trips ashore as we ‘see’ some of the treasures that the local landscape has to offer.
There are a wonderful eclectic mix of characters, all of whom are the other side of sixty. Caroline James shows that you are never too old to have fun. Life is for living.
You are never too old to follow your dreams. “Don’t die wondering what it might have been like to be an author. Make it happen.” If you have a dream, why not fulfil it?
Characters bond together. They help each other when needed – whether it’s a shoulder to cry on, or a mother to push in a wheelchair.
Love can still blossom whatever your age. We meet a character who has never loved as well as those who have loved and lost.
The Cruise Club is the perfect read for a glorious summer day. It’s a wonderful light-hearted and fun read.
I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

This is one of those books that you read with a big smile on your face!! It has that joyful, fun feeling as you watch over the exploits of the main characters, and setting it on a cruise ship just adds to the fun! I've not read the first book - The Cruise - so came in fresh and had a blast so I'm now looking forward to going back and reading the other book!

Carmen is at the heart of the matter, and she's a writer but is feeling the pressure both at home and work. The stories she hopes to write aren't flowing, and she's also being constantly put down by her Mum who she cares for. She's always had a prickly relationship with her and you feel she's at breaking point.

And then a cruise comes along that might just change both their lives! Carmens' writing hero is on board so she's hoping for inspiration from him. And she also finds a wonderful support from a new friend, Fran, who is the most supportive and positive person - we all need a Fran in our lives!

This is such a fun and positive novel all about starting over and getting out of your comfort zone to find the real you. I loved the setting and the characters and having people of different ages and outlooks all worked so wonderfully to make this a blast to read! Highly recommend!

I was so excited to read this book as I loved Caroline’s book The Cruise and couldn’t wait to hear more from The Diamond Star.

Carmen needs a break away from her elderly mother Betty but unfortunately she insists on tagging along to ruin Carmen’s dream holiday. However Carmen meets some great friends and both her and Betty make some life changing connections.

The characters were brilliant and so well described, I really felt like I was on the ship with them. Fran is an excellent character from Caroline’s previous book The French Cookery School so it was great to catch up with her and her lovely husband. It was also great to have Dicky Delaney back on board as i do have a soft spot for him and his act.

There was plenty of humour, romance, friendship and some mystery which made for an amazing 5 star summer read which I would definitely recommend.

Thanks to NetGalley, Caroline James and Avon Books UK for an advance copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Thoroughly fed up with her demanding mother, Carmen decides to take a Mediterranean cruise, hoping for inspiration to start her second book.
Unfortunately, Betty (Carmen’s mother) discovers her daughter’s plans and tags along with her, making everyone feel as miserable as she is.
There is a diverse set of characters aboard the ship, and Carmen hopes to learn from her idol Ruskin Reeve, how to develop her writing skills. I enjoyed reading about Sid and Fran, his wife, Melody Moon, a drag artist, and Thea is the best friend everyone needs. There is a kind, friendly community aboard the Diamond Star as it sails the Mediterranean, with fun and mischief along the way.
This is a steadily paced, lighthearted romance cruising the Greek islands. The scenery sounds beautiful, and you can imagine seeing the waves lapping onshore, as they explore new friendships and relationships.

An author struggling to write her next book
Found an advert that was well worth a look.
A cruise holiday with her favourite author there
Can she go without her Mum there needing her care?

However, her Mum thinks the cruise sounds good, too,
So she'll tag along, sure they'll find lots to do.
Carmen isn't so sure as Mum complains even more
Instead of a getaway will it prove more like a chore?

Meeting new people, learning about each other
New places, new meals, so much to discover!
Inspiration to change, others helping, too
There's even romance for quite a few!

But mischief is there, along with the fun
With pineapples, jewellery and so much to be done.
From the crew to the guests, there are surprises, too,
Bringing laughter to readers, all the way through.

I really enjoyed this brilliant, light-hearted read
And hope it proves to be the next book that you need!
For my copy of this fab book, I say a huge thank you
As I share with you this, my honest review.

What a gorgeous quote at the beginning of the book! Great start for a book that gets me dreaming about being back on a cruise. That, followed by a great meta line "If Carmel's life was a novel" did make me chuckle and showed an interesting writing style. While I didn't feel I was particularly invested in the romantic relationship, I felt there was enough going on with other characters that I was still keen to keep reading. With the romantic relationship, it did seem to rooted in the celebrity idolisation for me to be invested in the real moments. My main passion was for seeing the development of the mother daughter relationship and wanting to see the main character flourish which was really nice to see with the support of her cruise friends!
Big thanks to NetGalley and the author for the chance to read.

An escapist summer read with lovely settings and funny characters with all the shenanigans. It is like catching up with old friends.

The Cruise Club follows the story of author Carmen, who has a looming deadline and writer’s block. She books a cruise to clear her head and for space from her overbearing mother.

Although a standalone, we met with characters from the author’s previous books who definitely added life to the party.

Set aboard the Diamond Star and the various islands visited, we are immersed into the lives of the characters and their shenanigans aboard the ship.

I love the author’s writing and her characters are real (no airs). I felt frustrated with Carmen and how she lets her mum belittle her. I was expecting her to apologise.

If you are looking for an escapist read for the summer, you should read this.

I read The Cruise Club over a couple of relaxing afternoons, and it turned out to be just the kind of feel-good escape I was hoping for. It’s lighthearted, funny, and filled with a lively mix of characters. Carmen, the main character is instantly likeable and easy to root for. Watching her gradually gain confidence was uplifting.

Betty, Carmen’s mum, however… was hilarious, definitely my favourite part of the book! She’s bossy, dramatic, and often infuriating — but she also brings plenty of energy and humour to the story, which makes her hard to ignore.

The cruise ship backdrop gives the whole book a lovely summery feeling, the romantic element also added to the feel good vibes.

All in all, The Cruise Club was a warm and witty story and ideal for anyone wanting something uplifting to brighten up the dark mornings.

thanks to netgalley for this book in place of an honest review.
Personally, this book just wasn't for me. I didn't enjoy the style of writing, it wasn't always clear who was speaking and it felt like a lot of unnecessary extra bits that didn't need to be there. The descriptions of the locations were good and you could picture them, but I felt like I couldn't picture the people as well as I'd hoped. For Carmen, it really annoyed me that she never stuck up for herself, just a few words to her mother every now and then would have helped.
And the abrupt ending wasn't that great, the way the story just stopped with a small chapter of an epilogue just didn't work in my opinion.
I have given it 3 stars, overall not my ideal read but it wasn't truly awful.
