An assassin with a secret. An angel with a strange power. A war that threatens to destroy them both.
Cora is an assassin who never misses her mark. But she has a deadly secret: her blood can create the most powerful magical elixirs in the world.
And she's been hunted for it her whole life.
When a powerful demon blackmails her, threatening to expose her secret, she has to do one last job to buy her freedom: kill a Nephilim named Vince. Cora figures this will be an easy target.
Until Vince time travels, appearing in two places at once.
Thwarted, Cora must get close to Vince so she can learn the secret to his strange ability--and finally kill him once and for all. She infiltrates his high school, pretending to be a student so she can befriend him.
But the Cora gets closer to Vince, the more her icy heart begins to thaw, making way for new emotions she's never felt before.
As she falls for him, her secret is exposed, igniting a powerful war between demons and Nephilim. In the end, Cora must choose between her own survival and preventing a war that will tear the magical world apart.
This book begins a new saga in the Timecaster Chronicles and takes place twenty years after the events of Bound by Blood.
Thanks to R.L. Perez for a digital copy of The Demon's Kiss Make sure to check out this review and more of R.L. Perez on my blog Boekensteeg The Demon's Kiss is the first part in the latest trilogy by R.L. Perez called the Bloodcaster Chronicles. As in her previous books, the theme of time travel again plays a role. However, this series does not have witches as main character as her previous books did. R.L. Perez is one of my favorite indie fantasy authors. Will this series be as good as her previous books?
Ever since she was a child, Cora has had to protect herself from bad guys who are out for her blood. And despite her job as a assassin, Cora must avoid getting hurt. No one should know what she really is. The only person who knows her true nature is her boss, and when Cora wants her freedom back, she has only one more mission standing in her way. She is sent to kill the nephilim Vince. This seems like an easy job, but there's one thing she hadn't counted on. Due to his time travel gift, there can be multiple versions of Vince in the same place at the same time. She must gain his trust in order to kill him, but what if she falls for Vince? Will she be able to trust him with her secret?
"Someone tries to kill me every day. It sucks."
In this book you will get to know both Cora and Vince very well. Cora is constantly haunted by her origin, causing her to build a shield around herself. Throughout the story, R.L. Perez to break down this shield more and more. In addition, you will also get to know Cora's vulnerable side. Vince, on the other hand, is very insecure of himself. He has no control over his gift and risks missing out on his chance at a future.
R.L. Perez has a very fine writing style, with which she perfectly balances the different storylines. The development of both the characters and the worldbuilding is very nice and not too detailed. In my opinion everything is well balanced so that you can read quickly through the story. I had hoped to enjoy this book for several hours, but it was such a quick read that I only finished it in 1.5 hours. However, this should not spoil the fun as I really enjoyed this story.
The Demon's Kiss is a very nice start to the Bloodcaster Chronicles and I am very curious to see what R.L. Perez has even more in store for this series. She has outdone herself again. So I hope the next part in this series comes soon, so I can enjoy this series and author even more!
I want to thank R.L. Perez for sending me her book. Now its my turn to write the honest revieuw :) ill try to write it without spoilers!!
I couldnt put it down. Because there was a lot going one in this book :). On my Ereader i've mist a few chapters. So i had to download it for my phone as well. So i could read the chapters that i was missing.
Cora what a badass female is she. The more you get to know her. The more i fell in love with her. Damien on the otherhand is a ass who can die for my part. Vince what a beautiful character he is. he grounded Cora. And i loved that in his character!!
The world building. I Saw everything ive read. and im very excited for book two aswell even with the sneak peak of it. i really need more hihihihi. I'm really dying to know if Vince comes back to Cora.
i would recommand it to read to other people!! if the love Ya adult urban fantasy/ paranormal.
summary of thoughts: 2 stars for the raw idea, but zero for the execution. the writing itself was all over the place, with little continuity or flow. i found it repetitive (or extremely derivative) more often than not. while i started this book thinking "maybe this should be reccommend to younger audiences only", i ended this book thinking "yikes, please fire your editors".
‐--------
the basic structure of the series is hard to get a handle on due to the misuse of standard terminology: ● calling a demon legion a "coven" ● calling a chorus of angels a "coven" ● defining a "mimic" to mean an alternate reality's copy of oneself ● classifying vampires, lycanthropes, witches, and warlocks all as types of demons and then the whole situation was exacerbated by the author's choice of redefined terms being inconsistent between chapters, ie clan/coven are used interchangeably. all to say, the author failed to do reasonable research, and picked poor editors/proof readers.
character wise, we have a cutthroat assassin who opens the book with an internal monolog about how badass she is that no one even meets her eyes. by chapter 4 though, this assassin can't overcome a teenager with some "well placed kicks". and then we have said teenager who has apparently seen some pretty crazy things but nothing like a "mimic" or a person cloaked in shadow. it was almost as if the author wasn't sure what their backstory was prior to writing, so their personality claims rest unsubstantiated, changing from chapter to chapter, and giving the reader wiplash. unfortunately, the secondary characters had little to no development so we couldnt get to know them at all.
as for the plot, im afraid my comments are not any more positive than the above. the intensity is out of place and the emotions are forced. many scenes read like separate jumbles of notes smashed together without forethought. as a reader, i could not get invested in any portion of this story, which is a shame as the premise sounded promising. the raw idea for this book has merit, but the final novel is seriously lacking.
ive purchased the trilogy and plan to read at least book two. im hoping it has been more thoroughly reviewed and edited.
this was so bad i only finished it bc i physically had to. the plot had loads of potential but every imaginable plot piece happened in the span of a 4 hr read... zero development. would not recommend
I love this book . A true page turner. Focuses on a kid (Vince)who is half warlock and half angel. Cora is an assassin from a demon coven but she is a blood witch . Blood casters as they are known are extremely rare. The gene has to fall on both sides for a blood witch to be born. Cora is sent to kill him but there does not seem to be an obvious reason. Vince is has a rare ability to time travel. As his 18 th birthday looms closer he must choose between the warlock side and his angel side. If he chooses his warlock side he will he kicked out of the clan never to return and so will his father. His mother died in the demon wars 10 years ago snd he is all his father has left.
I could not put this novel down. It is a must read if you enjoy fantasy, underdogs (who grow some teeth) and a good adventure.
Cora is an incredible character and the writing flows so smoothly that you are instantly drawn into her world and don't want to leave. I read this book in less than 24 hours and cannot wait for a sequel. I want more of Cora, I want more of her badass world. I want to watch her finally rising to where she belongs in the world.
This was my first time reading a book by R.L. Perez and it won't be the last time either! "The Demon's Kiss" was enjoyable from page one. I was originally drawn to this book as it's a nephilim and demon tale. What will keep me coming back is the writing. The characters are vividly written and the storyline has layers of complexity. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in the series!
I loved this book!! I read it in less than a day and will definitely be reading more by this author!!! What a fun storyline! Excellent, clean writing. Diverse characters. Five stars!
The only reason this didn’t get 1 star is because I actually did manage to follow the storyline. However that doesn’t mean the storyline was good. I really hate time travel and if I’d have known that’s what this book was about I probably wouldn’t have even read it. It just doesn’t make sense in any story, it creates plot hole after plot hole and raises far more questions than answers. Anyway coming back to this book specifically, aside from the time travel, the main characters were incredibly bland and had very little chemistry in my opinion. Everything felt super forced and rushed, it went from I don’t know you or trust you to I love you in about 10 pages. Vince also seemed pretty pathetic for a guy who had so many different powers, how was he so unaware and unprepared for everything?? One minute he couldn’t jump or travel at all and then the next he was jumping everywhere and travelling back 10 years… and don’t even get me started on the people around him. If you know the guy is a danger to himself and others and there’s certain ‘rules’ to his powers do you not think it would be a good idea to mention those to him so he’s not completely clueless?? The whole thing just seemed like a load of nonsense to be honest, but it was pretty well written I guess. Needless to say, I will not be continuing with the series.
I've been a big fan of R.L Perez's work. I am an ARC reader for her sometimes (Disclaimer, I am writing this in the future and do not remember if this was an ARC)
I love the worlds Perez creates. Her fantasy books are face paced and addictive and this is no different. We have a strong female character who is also an assassin (Which personally, I think we need more books with FMC assassins) and shes stuck trying to kill a new target who isnt at all what she expected.
Is this book a little predictable? Yes. Its still well written and very enjoyable though!
Oh Mrs. Perez, I devoured this book. This was my first read by you and let me just say you did not disappoint.
Magic, Secrets, Missions, Time Travel, Magical Worlds, Paranormal and War. This book was everything. The FMC Cora literally is one of my favorites she is so badass and strong. I was a little suspious of Vince at first but fell in ABSOLUTE love with him. Other then the characters the world building was amazing. I normally get pretty bored but i felt like I was seeing everything.
I would reccomend this book to anyone and everyone who will listen
Over all the story was okay. Enemies to lovers trope. The magic was neat and there was a good mixture of characters. The story lacked description leaving the characters and settings blank. There was a lot of repeat telling of how the characters felt and didn’t really show me anything. It took me a long time to swallow this story. I really thought it would be good read. And it was at times the last part was a neat little twist.
I loved this book. This was a great love story. Through all odds Cora and Vince find love for one another. As you move on to book two. It gets tremendously harder for them with their new roles in all. I’m saying you want a good love story get this series. The Blood Casters Chronicles. You won’t regret it .
Had some interesting aspects to the story, and the overall story was good. I just had a hard time staying interested. There were several things here and there that just didn't sit right with me, and made it harder for me to keep going with the story. It was a good story overall, but I don't have an interest in reading further in the series.
The Demon's Kiss is a great quick read fantasy. R.L. Perez did a great job with world building. I do think that you need read the complete series to grasp the storyline. However, I wasn't really drawn to go out and purchase the next book
The romance wasn't very believable, the characters didn't have any chemistry. And I thought it was really amateur that Vince kept using lacrosse as some sort of guiding light in his life. The plot was interesting though.
I really thought that Vince and Cora would have a HEA. But I’m glad that Vince found his mom. This was a very good book. I can’t wait to read book two. I hope Vince and Cora will Be happy together and find there way back.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Thank you R.L. Perez for making this book part of the stuff your kindle day event! This book was such a cute little romance story. The story really sucked me in from the start.
This was absolutely fantastic. The romance was tasteful and made sense for the plot. The ending of the book was done in such an amazing way, closing off the journey we started in this book to then have new questions for the next book. I will absolutely be continuing with this series!
*Thank you to R.L. Perez and her publisher for sending me a free e-ARC copy of The Demon's Kiss in exchange for an honest review. All quotations are subject to change upon publication.*
Stats: Overall: 4/5 stars Characters: 4/5 stars Storyline: 4/5 stars Writing: 3/5 stars One-line review: The Demon's Kiss is a fast paced, action packed high fantasy novel, which any YA fantasy lover is bound to enjoy.
The Demon's Kiss is the first book in R.L. Perez's new Bloodcaster Chronicles series, which follows Cora Covington, assassin in a coven of demons, and her journey to freedom from the manipulative and power hungry Damien. Better yet, Damien doesn't know of Cora's plans of betrayal as it is hidden under the false charade of a task to kill Vince, a warlock with the ability to jump through time. During the book, tensions are high between Cora and Vince as they slowly become strangers/enemies to lovers.
----Plot----
The Demon's Kiss was filled to the brim with action. Battles, betrayals, assassinations, time travel, wars, wounds, romance...you name it. I cannot fault the authors ability at keeping the reader entertained with the fast paced plotline.
Although, the sheer amount of plotline events sometimes makes it difficult to remember particular moments as there is little periods of time in which little happens. The book only spans a couple of days, but it seems as it spans weeks due to the quantity of large events. Sometimes I relish in the moments where the book is a little slow, not too slow or for too long, but it allows the reader to mull over what has just happened and connect more to the characters, and that was lacking in this book.
Nevertheless, I prefer a fast paced book to a slow paced one, so for that, I give the author credit.
----Characters----
I adore Enemies/strangers to lovers romances, they are one of my favourite tropes, and R.L. Perez perfectly encapsulated everything I love in a YA romance.
I think Cora was an excellent protagonist, and her development throughout the novel was fascinating and a delight to witness, she begins oppressed, manipulated into working for Damien due to threats over him leaking to the world who she truly is; but that situation doesn't remain true for long, she plans Damien's downfall and her own emancipation from the life she is forced into.
Vince, however, I found lacked depth, I say this a lot with reviews, but It's true. It is incredibly hard to fully develop a cast of characters in such a little amount of pages, and especially with Vince, I felt as he was an empty shell of a character, we learn little of his past and since this is a series, I feel as it is necessary to give the characters a backstory we can empathise, relate or simply acknowledge to keep the reader entertained.
----Writing----
My main criticism of the book is the lack of prose. It may just be personal preference, but I felt as descriptions and prose was lacking in quantity. Due to the multitude of events occurring in the novel, there is little room for a break to describe the surroundings, or get a deeper look into the characters emotions - this once more, tends to cause a detachment of the reader to the character, as they cannot relate or empathise with the properly. This goes back to my argument that possibly there should be one or two less large events to make room for a more in depth description of some of the crucial events of the plotline.
Other than that, R.L. Perez is excellent at making a story flow naturally, whilst at the same time making it a compelling and riveting read.
I found this book a little more difficult to get into than the earlier Caster Chronicles, I think because the heroine of this story is very different from the previous two series. However after the first chapter I was hooked again.
Cora is a witch with special blood; it is magic and makes the most potent potions in the world. She is constantly hunted for her blood and so she had to teach herself to fight and became the assassin for the demon gang boss Damien, but Cora wants out. He will only release her if she does one last job: kill Vince, a half nephilim, half warlock. Vince is very unsure of himself, his magic and his place in the community of nephilim. By accident he discovers that he can time travel, but struggles to control this and his other powers. His 18th birthday is close and he must swear allegiance to the Nephilim or be cast out and while he isn’t comfortable with making that choice, he also knows that his father’s future in the community depends on him swearing in.
Cora’s and Vince’s lives become intertwined on a number of levels and the demons and nephilim around them are not as they seem and all have secrets and agendas of their own.
Love, friendship, betrayal, murder and unexpected twists unfold and R.L. takes us on another rollercoaster of action and drama and with a satisfying conclusion, but not and ending to the story.
The narrator of this audio-book is Alyssa Ratkovich. Her pronunciation is clear and concise, and she has a pleasant voice. Alyssa made an effort to change her voice with the characters, but I found the male voices all sounded gravelly, deep and slow and were often too similar for a clear distinction.
I received this book in audio-book format from the author and am leaving this review of my own volition.
Recommended for: Lovers of breath taking action, supernatural romance and drama in a imaginative time travelling fantasy setting.
Another action packed paranormal book from R.L. Perez! Perez has such a gift for her craft. The story of Cora and Vince is told incredibly well with well developed characters. The story is full of twists and turns that keep you wanting to turn the page. It makes you wonder how an author can write a story with such a complex and detailed story line without letting the reader feel lost and confused. We are introduced to Cora as a ruthless assassin who never misses her mark. The first Mark she misses in years literally upends her world. Initially she embarks on her mission as an act of self preservation in an attempt to enact vengeance on the demon that holds her in his clutches. As she carries out her mission and gets to know her mark, her mission moves from self-preservation to protection of those she grows close to. When we meet Vince he is a high school senior with questions about his place on his world. Throughout the story he finds the answers to his questions and is forced to mature and grow as he becomes focused on his survival. The story ends on some what of a cliffhanger and there are still some unanswered questions I have that I’m hoping will be answered by the follow up book that I can’t wait to get my hands on! This story does have an enemies to lovers romance aspect but the characters don’t get their HEA...yet, hopefully!
Audible listen. Narrator does a good job. There were some weird sounds briefly after some of the chapters, but overall, the recording is a quality recording. The narrator fit the characters well, and she had a nice tone to her voice.
Entertaining setup! Witch Cora is sort of the bad guy; she’s an assassin and is part of a demon coven. She’s being blackmailed by her ex-boyfriend into assassinating 17 year old half nephilim/half warlock Vince. 20 year old Cora knows nothing about why her ex wants Vince taken out, but she tries anyway to keep her secrets hidden; secrets that would see her hunted down. Luckily, she’s foiled when Vince uses his unknown time travel abilities to escape. Cora is ordered to go undercover to learn more about Vince, and oh boy she’s in for lots of surprises! Vince is also in for some surprises! It’s great to get both POVs; Cora’s and Vince’s. These two are dealing with some very dangerous situations! There’s some cool action too! Love the magical elements and that this story deals with different types of paranormal characters. There’s also a bit of romance! This one does end on a cliffhanger of sorts, so you’ll want to continue on with the next books for the full story. I’m looking forward to reading the next books; I already picked them up!
I really enjoyed it. New Adult urban fantasy. Cora is a blood witch and that means her life is anything but safe. She takes on a life of death and mistrust to keep herself alive. Man by a name for herself is supposed to keep her safe, until the one person who knows her secret decides to use it against her. Now Cora has to leave her home in an assignment she's not prepared for, and she doesn't even know why. All she knows is that if she doesn't, she'll be hunted. Vince is a normal High school student. He has a best friend and plays a sport. Except, he's also a half warlock, half nephilim who's mother died and father gave up his Warlock powers to live with the clan of nephilim and raise Vince to be one. Ok he's not so normal. Making tough choices is basically the name of the game. Mistakes will be made, secrets will be kept, feeling will be develop and then hurt. All of this would be enough, but there's also time traveling and secret powers.
Yeah there's a lot going on. Good news is, it's not confusing at all and it all ties together really well. The story is interesting, and the characters are fun and loveable. Definitely recommend.
*4.5 stars* I have never read a fantasy book that so easily and quickly gets into the storyline/ plot of the book and shows you all the information you need to know. The pacing of this book was incredible. There was not a single slow moment in the book, the plot was always moving forward, and stayed interesting from the first to last page. The book did read a little YA. I liked all the main characters, but their thoughts felt a little underdeveloped and came to simple conclusions. Their thought process was quite simple, which made them feel less authentic, surface level, and stereotypical high school fictional character. This is my only real complaint with the book. The story was interesting, compelling, fast paced, and very enjoyable. The plot was also well thought out and the story magically pieced together seamlessly. I really liked the magic system, the easy world politics, and unique story aspects. I look forward to the continuation of the characters story and their progression. - update: I can't stop thinking about this story and need to bite the bullet and read the next book!
