He destroyed her ancestors’ city. She is bound by oath to be his ally. A prophecy ties their fates. Soon they will discover who the true enemy is.
*** After Source-wielders attack her city, it is left in shambles. Queen Sybilla Wymark sees only one opportunity to protect her independent reign: honor her blood oath to follow a grumpy, ill-tempered King into an enemy realm. Sybilla expected his land to be a desert wasteland—what she had always been told it was. But when she arrives, she is confronted with a vibrant place full of magic and a surprising prophecy that forces her to wonder what other lies had she been fed?
Centuries ago, King Krait Darvanda built a sanctuary away from the land that outcasted Source magic. An alliance with the strong-willed Queen Wymark seems prudent…until he finds out that she might be bound to his destiny. To his dismay, Krait realizes that the only way he can prevail against a long rising threat to his realm is fighting by her spoiled, foul-mouthed side.

The second book in this series, this had more action and had characters that you were previously introduced to and felt connected to. The sparks were flying off the page and there were twists that I did not see coming. Hints and clues from the first book popped up and related to events in this one, all leading to a future battle royale. I couldn’t put this down in the second half of the book, I needed to connect all the dots in my mind!
❤️ Tropes ❤️ 💋 enemies to lovers 💋 forced proximity 💋 prophecied heir 💋 widowed MMC
Sybilla was queen of the central corridor, and owed the King of the Salhms a huge debt after he saved her city from complete ruin. But she doesn’t have to be happy about it. And his terms? She has to go to his kingdom to help assess any magic users that want to return to her lands, now that the barrier is down. They can’t speak to each other without insult, but the fire between them starts burning in ways they never expect.
Thank you to Sunny Babe PR for the copy, all thoughts are my own.
Thank you to Sunny Babe PR and Mariet Kay for the opportunity to read the EARC!! I was super excited to jump back into this world after thoroughly enjoying the first book “Born of Starlight” which is a loose Rapunzel retelling and a fantastic debut by the author!
Book 2 was just as enjoyable and I enjoyed revisiting characters from the first book. I’d definitely recommend reading the first book before this one as there is reference and characters previously mentioned throughout book 1.
I love Sybillas character and was excited to read more about the prophecy surrounding her storyline. My favourite fantasy books always have the most bad ass female characters who stun me with their bravery and Sybilla is no exception! The pacing was great and the plot kept me engaged and ended in a way that had me excited to get into book 3.
I love the romantic suspense and the love interest build up between various characters as well as all the world building and fantasy / powers elements.
Okay, buckle up buttercup, because this book is a chaotic, explosive cocktail of political intrigue, forbidden romance, and enough sass to make a seasoned pirate blush!
First off, our Queen Sybilla is no shrinking violet. She's got that "I'd rather die on my own terms" vibe, which is always a refreshing change from the damsel-in-distress trope. And let's be real, who wouldn't rather have a witty, foul-mouthed ally by their side than some bland, predictable hero?
King Krait, on the other hand, is a broody shadow daddy. But let’s be real, who doesn’t love that? This dynamic has some pure comedic gold moments. Imagine the verbal sparring, the eye-rolling, the constant attempts to one-up each other.
Honestly, this book has all the makings of a fantastic read. It's got that perfect blend of action, humor, and political intrigue that will leave you wanting more. Just be prepared for some serious sass and a whole lot of unexpected twists and turns.
ARC Review: City of Snakes by Mariet Key ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5
When I say I devoured this book, I mean it! The second installment of the Legends of Henosis series had me hooked from start to finish. Sybilla and King Darvanda have officially claimed the spot as my favorite couple in the series, and for good reason.
Sybilla is a force to be reckoned with—fierce, sharp-tongued, and unapologetically badass. She defends her realm with unyielding determination, standing toe-to-toe with King Darvanda, whose brooding stubbornness perfectly complements her fiery spirit. Their chemistry? Absolutely sizzling! The slow burn between them kept me on edge, and when things finally heated up, it was so worth the wait.
Beyond the romance, this story is packed with tension, action, and depth. Sybilla’s journey to save her people kept me glued to the pages, often staying up late into the night (and early morning) just to see what happened next. The side characters and intricate backstories added layers to the narrative, making the world of Henosis feel vivid and alive.
Without giving away any spoilers, let me just say this: City of Snakes is by far one of my favorite ARCs of the year. And the best part? It’s available on Kindle Unlimited, so don’t wait—grab it now and dive into this epic tale! I’m desperately hoping for a book three because I am fully invested in this series. If you’re a fan of fiery heroines, reluctant kings, and slow-burn romances with a hefty dose of spice, you need this book on your shelf!
Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to add!
City of snakes is the second book in the "Legends of Henosis" series. It is a fast paced romance fantasy novel that is filled with high stakes anticipation, magic, political betrayals, prophecies, manipulation, strong- willed royals and irresistible love and desires.
The story follows Queen Sybilla Wymark who made a blood oath to the arrogant, ill- tempered king Krait Darvanda to protect her reign. When she travels to his realm, expecting the worst, Sybilla is instead flabbergasted with the richly steeped magic interwoven into the very core of the realm.
King Darvanda's realm paints a vivid picture of hope and magic. Although the revelation of his destiny intertwined with that of Queen Sybilla makes him feel somewhat unsure of what he truly desires. And the fact that Sybilla pushes his patience to the edge of exhaustion also doesn't help his cause. She is a headstrong ruler who will not bow to anyone and knows the ways to rattle him quite well.
This book was absolutely engaging right from the start. I was absolutely gripped by the Queen Sybilla's personality in the first book and I truly wanted to see more of King Darvanda's involvement and was satisfied with this second book. I am having a real tough time explaining the story as I don't want to give any spoilers. Having said that, I would highly recommend reading the first book before this because we have some revisits of our favourite characters from book one as well as interconnected events. One of the other characters, Emmerick had a drastic revelation about his lineage and status which was surprising and him getting acquainted with this change, were definitely one of the most anticipated scenes from the book. My favourite part of the "City of snakes" was when they entered Krait's realm and the way he is occasionally mesmerized and at times infuriated by Queen Sybilla's actions and Sybilla thinking him to be a prick and impassive king yet finding him desirable, were highly entertaining. The world- building as well as the magic system are intriguing and it captivated me beyond my expectations. Sahlmsara was enchantingly beautiful and I can only imagine how wondrous the picturesque landscape and view must be. It was one of the best and utterly engaging books of this year. A total page-tuner. I loved it!
I'd highly recommend this book to all the fantasy enthusiasts.
Queen Sybilla was able to save her people but at a cost - she had a bargain to fulfill with King Darvanda from the Sahlms. She watched as her Constable, Emmerick, became the King of the North Corridor. Her one true friend and confidant was whisked away from her. As she prepared for her time in the Sahlms, she wondered if she could finally bring back magic to her realm.
King Krait Darvanda came to the central corridor in hopes of finally finding the missing piece to the prophecy that controlled his destiny. Instead, he left with a willful, foul-mouthed, irreverent Queen. As he started spending more time with her, he learned that she was capable, resourceful and strong. He started to notice that she was quickly starting to make a place for herself not only in his realm but also his heart.
When secrets of Sybilla’s origins and their connection to Darvanda’s prophesy are revealed, they must make tough choices to not only save their people but also those they love.
This book had me gripped right from the start. I loved the way Sybilla did not let her chronic inflammation or health woes get in the way. She pushed forward and handled every challenge with grace and strength. I was especially loved by Darvanda’s backstory. It was poignant and emotional. The lore in this installment of the series raises the stakes just a little bit higher. The ending has me gasping. I cannot wait to see what comes next!
✨This review may contain spoilers if you have not read book one!✨
The gasps I GUSPED while reading this book!! My brain made it difficult, but once I got going, I devoured it. This book was everything I could’ve asked for after Born of Starlight, which was one of my top reads of 2023. Somehow, I think I enjoyed this one even more.
Krait and Sybilla were all of the angst, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, touch him/her and d!e vibes you could ever want. Both misunderstood, hurting, craving. I might just read it again to experience it all over again. Did I mention he’s a shadow daddy? HELLO.
As someone with autoimmune diseases and chronic pain, it was empowering to read a character that dealt with that and was still a badass. Sybilla is so strong, stubborn, and sweet. I would love to be her friend. Speaking of, I loved the friendships from book one and the ones that blossomed in book two 🥹
The last 15ish% of this book about took me out. Nothing but ACTION and plots coming together. I can’t WAIT for more.
“There are some things that are nostalgic not because of the places themselves but because of the people that once filled them.”
“Love doesn’t come with the freedom to choose when it is convenient. Love defies logic and complexity. There isn’t anything you could do to stop it or dull it or walk away from it.”
Wow!! What an epic sequel to this dark fast paced fantasy! The story hooked me for the start. In this installment it focused on Sybilla and Krait but previous characters are present throughout.
I loved the twists and turns this story took! There were a lot of ups and downs and it sure kept me on my toes! There was mysteries, secrets, pasts, prophecies and so much packed into this exciting book! It’s certainly not to miss!!
And of course there’s the characters! So unexpected and so fun! Sybilla was a spitfire independent woman who took no crap. I loved her! She wasn’t afraid to cuss someone out and give them a piece of her mind.
Krait was a grumpy arrogant man who has a past and secrets of course! Seeing his growth was so well worth the journey. Plus he’s a total kick-butt shadow daddy!
The two of them together were like literal cats and dogs the way they fought and spoke! It was entertaining to watch their relationship develop into something deeper.
I can’t wait from more from this series! Need more reasons to read them how about these tropes; enemies to reluctant allies to lovers, slow burn, banter, foul tempered characters, second chance at romance, love triangle vibes, morally grey characters, loyal friends, found family, secrets, pasts, prophecies, magic, epic battles, touch him/her and xx vibes, grumpy/grumpy, marriage of convenience, shadow daddy, forced proximity, and so much more you don’t want to miss!!
He commanded, “Never do that again.” “Kiss you?” I retorted. He let a half-hearted growl build in his throat. “No, risk your life. I won’t have it.”
I loved book one Born of Starlight, so I knew I was in for a treat! And I can tell you City of Snakes by @marietkay.writes definitely didn’t disappoint!
In this book we follow Sybilla Queen of the Central Corridor and Kraith King of Sahlmsara. At the end of book 1, even though Kraith came to the rescue, Sybilla’s city is left in ruins. To show her support of magic wielders and his country she makes an oath that she goes back to his city to convince the other corridors.
In the mean time Kraith suspects she is a part of a century old prophecy to finally defeat the Death Origin one and for all. One problem they need an heir!
The grumpy shadow king doesn’t know yet how he will tell Sybilla about the prophecy when she proposes a deal. He agrees, but the longer he waits to tell the truth, the harder it will be to convince Sybilla of his sincerity.
Will he be able to win her over? Will love trump all? Read it now in this epic fantasy!
This was a fun read! I still love the world and magic system of this addition to the series, but it had some tropes that were not my favorite. That is a personal preference, however, and not a reflection of the book as a whole. I did enjoy it a lot, and the character dynamic and development kept me going! If it wasn't for my busy work schedule, I probably would have flown through this!
I am normally not one to care for politically driven worlds, but the politics of this series is simple and engaging. Absolutely loved my time reading this! A 3.75⭐ in my books! It really was just a certain trope I don't typically enjoy that docked down some points. However, I normally DNF books with that trope, so take that bit as you will!
I enjoyed getting back to this series and characters. Learning more about Sybilla and the prophecy and her powers as well. Of course the tension between her and Krait was the best. 😅 and watching the walls slowly come down was even better. And Ryn and Elsedora were so fun too. But yall, Ryn !😭😭😭😭 This was such a ride. The last several chapters though were so damn intense. The epilogue was perfect though.....the extra chapter has me wondering what's up next. It's definitely going to be interesting for sure.
City of Snakes held me captive for three days! I savored my return to this captivating world! It took a little while to reacquaint myself with the world-building, but it gradually came back to me. I do wish I had revisited Born of Starlight beforehand, but that’s all right! Sybilla’s journey captivated me from the very first chapters! I relished the story, the plot, the slow-burn romance, and the enchanting elements! The writing was exceptional, and I can't wait for the third book! If you’re in search of an outstanding fantasy read, I wholeheartedly recommend this series!
I am truly at a loss for words for how incredible this fucking book was. Like I just… OH MY GOD?!?!!?!?!??!??
I might have more words later. I need to process.
UPDATE: After multiple days to process and blowing up Mariet’s DMs, I have found the words.
I know from BOS that I would love Sybilla and I was right. She is such a strong, badass woman and her penchant for cursing only made me love her more. She’s a woman after my own heart. To willingly walk into enemy territory and sacrifice your own happiness for your kingdom???? She deserves the world.
Krait??????? Sir. 1. SHADOW DADDY TO THE FULLEST EXTENT. 2. I love you. He went through some serious grief and it made my heart hurt for him. To live with that prophecy for hundreds of years… Jesus.
Emmerick… Emmy… Babe. I still have no words for you. I’m sorry, but also I’m ready to smack you. And then hug you. And then smack you again.
The library scene will live rent free in my brain for all of eternity. 😮💨
I loved the action and the character growth and the world building and this is easily one of my favorite series of all time. Truly. If there’s one fantasy series I will forever recommend, it’s this one.
Thank you so much to Mariet for the ARC of this book and prepare to never get rid of me 😈
I LOVED Sybil. She’s a spitfire with a foil mouth and reminded me so much of myself! As someone who deals with chronic pain and tries to hide it from others, I appreciated reading about Sybil’s struggles. And Krait?! DREAMY! I love a grumpy man that takes control and owns who he is. The plot, slow burn romance, and the plot held me captive until the end. I loved Born of Starlight but this one is my current series favorite!
This is a fantastic spinoff to Born of Starlight (book 1 in this series), and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It’s spicy, it’s sweet, it’s dark, and it’s tense. Loved it. CoS focuses on Emmerick, Queen Sybilla and King Krait, characters we briefly met in the first installment.
I connected with the sassy Sybilla immediately. I really enjoyed reading about her and Krait’s developing relationship, and how they come to accept and move on from their pasts to grow and love each other. The villain is truly evil, and that ending definitely left me wanting more! I’m excited for book 3.
3.5-4! While I liked that this wasn’t so insta-love as the first book, I think the fmc was a little less mature. BUT her character growth did help and I ended the book liking her better! I also didn’t love the POV of one of the side characters and found myself bored with it. I can’t wait to read Lark’s journey, whom I’m assuming is the fmc of the next book!
This book was amazing, I couldn’t put it down! The enemies to lovers trope was very well done, the characters were vibrant and unique and the plot kept me hooked the whole way through. Can’t wait for the final book!!
If I had a list of must-read fantasy series, I think this one would make the cut. I've really enjoyed this series so far, and I feel like it has a lot of the elements that I look for in a great fantasy series. It has romance, adventure, magic, and dark creatures and villains as well. I don't think I can choose which book I liked better in the series so far because I feel like I enjoyed them both equally but for very different reasons. This is the type of series where the main characters change in each book, so while the first book was Asterie and Fenris' story, they only play a minor role in this book. This instead features points of view of Queen Sybilla, King Krait, and Emmerick. One of the things I was hoping for after reading the first book was that Emmerick would get his own point of view but I honestly wasn't expecting it to be in this book because the synopsis only focused on Sybilla and Krait so I was surprised when I started reading it. I'll be honest and say that his point of view didn't really go as I was expecting but I feel like the next book will feature him a lot more given every that took place in this book. I have to say that one of my favorite elements of the first book was the friendship that formed between Asterie and Emmerick (as well as Fenris toward the end) so I was definitely missing that in this book. I will say that I liked how this book expanded the world introduced in the first book, and you get a clearer picture of the overarching conflict and villain of the series. I did enjoy the pairing of Sybilla and Krait even if their relationship was frustrating at times. I think I must have been reading a lot of books lately where the main couple gets together a lot quicker because this definitely felt like a slow burn romance to me and I was starting to get impatient and I don't know why because I've read some more intense slow burn romances where the couple doesn't actually get together until like 3 books in which obviously wasn't the case for this book. I really like the writing in this series, I find it easy to follow and I actually like how the author sort of ties off the plot of the individual book toward the end but then still has overarching plot points that will carry on to the next book. I am curious to read how everything will end in the next book and I really hope that Emmerick will get a happy ending and a person as well but I'm not quite sure who the author plans for him to end up with at this point. I have some ideas in my head, but I'll try to be patient and wait for the next book to come out to read how everything ends.
Queen Sybilla’s city was attacked by Source-weilders and left in shambles. She sees only one opportunity to protect her reign: honor her blood oath to the ill-tempered King in an enemy realm. Sybilla was always told that Darvanda’s realm was a desert wasteland, so she is surprised to find a vibrant place filled with magic. King Darvanda believes an alliance with Queen Sybilla is a prudent idea… until he discovers that she may be bound to his destiny.
CITY OF SNAKES is the second book in the Legends of Henosis series (at least it is my hope that there will be more books to come!). In hindsight, I wish I would have reread the first book, Born of Starlight because it took me some time to recollect and immerse myself with the characters and previous book’s contexts. Nevertheless, I muddled my way through and eventually caught my stride.
The world-building continues to evolve, is intricate, and easy to visualize. The magic system is interesting and relatively well described, but I do think I would have benefited from a legend or further explanation of the Source powers and their wielding capabilities.
The novel is told in multiple POV, alternating between Sybilla, Krait, and Emmerick. Each character is dynamic and well-written. I loved getting to know each character that is encountered over the course of the novel, as well as their backstories. I can’t decide which POV was my favorite, but I do think it alternated between Sybilla’s and Krait’s.
I enjoyed the romance that blossomed between two of the main characters. There was some back and forth between Krait and Sybilla in the middle point of the novel that interrupted the flow and was drawn out a bit too long, but did serve well as conflict in their relationship. There are some spicy scenes (the library scene 🥵) which are well timed and well written.
The plot of CITY OF SNAKES is fast-paced and complex with many moving parts, some action and adventure, high stakes, tension, and intrigue. There are some twists that I didn’t see coming and this was so well executed. The ending had me reading with bated breath, worried about what the outcome would be. The epilogue was perfect and leaves me wondering what will come in future books (should they one day exist)!
I would like to thank SunnyBabePR and the author of this advanced digital copy for the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for an honest review! All opinions expressed are my own.
🐍 CITY OF SNAKES 🐍 "I have lived in a city of snakes for a long time, Krait. My snakes just never gave me any warning before striking."
This book? Utterly. Unhinged. Perfection.
If you’re looking for a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers, shadow-wielding grumpy king and a razor-tongued queen who WILL curse him out while secretly wanting to kiss him, congratulations—you’ve found your next obsession.👏
👑 Queen Sybilla Wymark is fierce, independent, and not about to let anyone—especially the arrogant, brooding King Krait Darvanda—dictate her fate. But when her kingdom is attacked, she’s forced to honor an old blood oath and follow Krait into his mysterious, magic-infused realm.
Sybilla is stubborn. Krait is infuriatingly unreadable. Together? They are a disaster waiting to happen. And I LIVED for every second of it.
🔥 WHY YOU’LL BE OBSESSED 🔥 ✨ Enemies-to-Lovers – With the angst cranked up to 100. ✨ Shadow Daddy Krait – The brooding king who hates how much he wants her. ✨ Foul-Mouthed Queen Energy – Sybilla takes NO sh*t and gives Krait exactly zero peace. ✨ Banter for DAYS – They argue. They glare. They pretend not to stare at each other’s lips. Chef’s kiss. ✨ Magic & Prophecies – Fate says they’re bound. They say screw fate. ✨ Forced Proximity – Of course, they must travel together. Of course, there’s just one bed. ✨ Slow Burn (but WORTH IT) – The tension is unbearable. The payoff? Perfection. ✨ Scheming, Betrayals, & Power Plays – Political intrigue that keeps you on edge. ✨ Twists & Action-Packed Final Chapters – You will not be okay.
💀 QUOTES THAT TOOK ME OUT 💀 🖤 "There is nothing that I hate about you. It’s the most infuriating thing." (Krait, babe, are you okay?) 🔥 "Love doesn’t come with the freedom to choose when it is convenient. Love defies logic and complexity. There isn’t anything you could do to stop it or dull it or walk away from it." (Excuse me while I SOB.) 👀 "Here we go with the breeding fantasies again." (I spat out my drink. The absolute audacity.)
The tension. The longing. The moments of "oh no, I accidentally like you." The absolute chokehold this book has on me. And that ending?? Mariet Kay, ma’am, how DARE you. I need book three IMMEDIATELY.
Plot 4.25/5 Character 4.25/5 Ending 4/5 Interest 4.5/5
Overall 4.25/5
-I do really like these types of fantasy books with lots of romance and high stakes, taking care of one another and just an overall great vibe and interesting plot line to follow through with. I really liked the world in which this series takes place in so it was nice to go back to it after having read the first book not long ago. The plot had its intrigues although it was heavily romance focused as the main storyline was the prophecy involving the two characters and some villains coming back from the first book.
-Really enjoyed the characters and from the beginning I knew I would enjoy this book and the romance between both main character but I did have some issues with it. I don’t particularly like when the relationship feels like it is practically entirely based on lust and physical attraction, I guess that is a main reason as to why I dislike sexual content in books because I feel like it takes out a lot of the actual romantic and caring aspects and turns them into physical attraction instead. I do see that they care for each other but that is books in general. Another thing I don’t really like in most books, not just this one is that the characters have had previous seemingly ‘perfect’ relationships. Freya was kind of held at a pedestal for Krait and it sometimes felt like he was still idolising her whilst falling for Sybilla and same for her and Emmerick, I loved him in the first book and in this one he was kind of brought down. They both had their pasts, and everybody does but I don’t like how it was mentioned so many times. It felt like they were each other’s rebounds. I know they weren’t and I still really liked their romance.
-The ending was similar to the first one where the stakes rise up, the characters do something spectacular, defeat the evil in their lives and the epilogue being a sort of open ending. Perhaps towards a future sequel? I really liked these books in general and would definitely read more from this author, especially if it’s set in the same universe with characters we already know and love.
This book was SO. GOOD. City of Snakes was a fantastic second installment to the Legends of Henosis series! I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation the whole way through. And the slow burn?! Absolutely *chefs kiss.* I was curling my toes, giggling with giddiness and shouting with fury at our 2 main characters for this second book. Sybilla and Krait's tension could be cut with a knife it was so thick. I loved the multi-POV because it added so many layers to the storyline and made the tension and misunderstandings happening between these characters that much more infuriating. I was absolutely OBSESSED with the femininest undertones of this book and the incredible strength and determination of our brilliant, stubborn, and loud FMC. And can you say broody shadow daddy? Because that's exactly what Krait, our MMC, is, and the author has you craving him within the first couple chapters of the book. And the plot? Absolutely incredible. This was such a fantastic continuation, from new perspectives, of the previous installment, Born of Starlight. While this book follows a new set of characters, it is absolutely essential to the growth of the incredible plot and a perfect passing of the baton to create a seamless flow from one book to another. The themes were dark, but the banter kept this book lighthearted and hilarious as well. I am blown away by the capability of the author to carry this storyline from one POV to the next while still allowing you to feel satiated with each characters arc and perspective. The plot twist was incredible, and the ending cliffhanger left me gasping and begging for the final installment of this incredible series. I can not wait to see how this story wraps up in the 3rd book of the Legends of Henosis. This series is very quickly making its way onto my list of favorite book series of all time. Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read the second installment of this epic romantasy series.
City of Snakes is book two in the Legends of Henosis series and it does not disappoint! I loved book one, but book two gave me all the feels!♥️
Picking up where book 1 finishes of, the story is now continued in Queen Sybillia, King Darvanda and King Mattocks points of view. Queen Sybillia upholds her oath to King Darvanda and travels with him to his continent to help him save his people in return for him saving her Corridor. But as they figure away for both their people to survive, Evils of old resurface, hidden prophecies are revealed and it seems there's meant to be more to Sybillia and Kraits alliance. All the while, newly appointed King Mattock reels in his new titles and tries to overcome his anger of his hidden lineage.
As stated this book picks up where the first leaves off and characters from the first make frequent appearances in this second book. Reading the first book is highly recommended. We are also introduced to King Darvanda's court and city and it was revealed in such a wonderful way that I thoroughly enjoyed learning about. Ryn and Elsedora are two of my new favorite characters and their characters often had me laughing out loud.
The chemistry and pull between Sybillia and Darvanda was absolutely enthralling! I loved every minute of their constant bickering and tension fueled arguments! The spice and slow burn is diffently worth it!
If book one was a loose take on repunzel, then book two definitely gave me beauty and the Beast vibes. I finished this book in a day it was so entertaining! The book is definitely fast paced and world building is told in a way that does not leave one bored. It's an easy read, filled with love, laughter, betrayal, heartache, forgiveness and hope! I definitely can't wait for the next one!
Thank you @sunnybabepr and author @marietkay.writes for this wonderful opportunity to continue on my Legends of Henosis journey!
Mariet gives readers a fast paced, romance novel that doesn’t disappoint. Book 2 in the trilogy, you must read them in order. Not doing so takes away the amazing storytelling Mariet does and so many plot points are set up in book 1. This book, just as the first, is filled with high stakes, political betrayals, prophecies, and manipulation.
Following book 1, we find Queen Sybilla entering the kingdom of King Krait. His kingdom is not what she was expecting, rather finds its magic deeply rooted into the very core of his realm. Although the king and queen are reluctant allies, their banter and interactions with one another kept me going, because I loved reading the two of them together. While neither one is looking for love, they seem to really enjoy riling the other up. Their witty banter tiptoes the line of flirting and is begging for someone to make the first move.
Sybilla is a queen I adored. I loved her personality and how she would bow to no man. She knows what is best for her kingdom and isn’t going to allow anyone to tell her otherwise. Mariet knows how to write a slow burn that keeps a reader intrigued and in a constant thought pattern of “will they and when will they”.
I have to take a moment to gush about her world building abilities. She has written world that is so beautiful and layered, it is easy to imagine and understand why each royal loves their realm and kingdom so much. Included in the world building is the unique magic system she has built within this universe. It is complex, but beautiful and intriguing. I am beyond excited for book 3. If you are any type of fantasy fan, this trilogy is one you will want to read.
As always, review any author notes before reading.

Born of Starlight (Book 1) blew me away with its gorgeous world, magic system, and characters. City of Snakes continues in this world but shifts the focus on two characters we meet from Book 1.
We journey to the heart of The Sahlms where Queen Sybilla honors her oath to King Darvanda. One must meet a deadline to wed to secure their throne and the other races to thwart an ancient evil by fulfilling a prophecy. What do the stars have in store for these two dutiful but emotionally unavailable royals?
Tropes: 👀Multi POV ⚠️Enemies to lovers 👑Headstrong royals 🖤Shadow Daddy 💍Marriage of convenience 💫Curses & prophecies 🫂Forced proximity 🛏️Just one bed 🌶️: moderate
Sybilla carries the weight of her kingdom on her shoulders in addition to the secrets she’s kept. Krait still mourns his past and refuses to open his heart to the possibility of a marriage outside of duty and convenience. Their relationship is a push and pull of warring emotions, self-described as “F*ck or filet,” and is deftly explored throughout the narrative.
Sybilla is an absolute spitfire and their verbal sparring was so much fun to read. We are also treated to a tortuous slow burn between these strong willed MCs.
As they work towards uniting the lands against the common enemy, the details of the prophecy come to light. Will they go on to fulfill it or will the truth of the prophecy break them irrevocably?
City of Snakes is sure to enamor readers with its top tier banter, tantalizing tension, and captivating characters!
So grateful to the author and sunny babe PR for the review copy opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Thank you to Sunny Babe PR, Palm Lane Publishing, and Mariet Kay for an Advanced Reader's Copy of this title!
Things could be going better for Queen Sybilla Wymark: the city she rules has been destroyed, her remaining family and advisors circle her like vultures to steal her crown, and she's bound by a blood oath to follow an incredibly grumpy King to an enemy realm. Said King Krait Darvanda of the banished wastelands could also be having a better day: after centuries of painstakingly building an empire of sand and searching far and wide, he is no closer to solving the prophecy tied to his family line and the survival of the realm - that is, until his whiny brat of a "guest" proves that she may be the key he is seeking, to his utter dismay. Can Krait and Sybilla put aside their differences for the good of their realms, and, more importantly, can they avoid the attraction that bubbles like a mirage between them despite themselves?
I really loved the Rapunzel-esque vibes of Book 1 of this series, and after finding out that we would hear more about the misadventures of some of our side characters from that installment, I couldn't wait to pick up this book. I love the way this universe plays with the idea of mortals and immortals, and the implications that several hundred years' worth of history has on kingdoms and relationships here. For the main course, readers will enjoy this story's vibes, which include enemies-to-lovers, he falls first, widow-with-a-past, disability rep FMC, prophecy and revelation, he trains her, mind > matter, and grumpy X foul-mouthed sunshine. As a side dish, there is also an underlying current of twist and turns which bring back some familiar faces from Book 1, wave a plot bigger than several kingdoms can encompass, and set a veritable battleground for the third book, which I eagerly await with grabby hands!
City of Snakes is an exciting, magical ride that has all the tension, snark, and romance you could ask for, and honestly, I might love the romance between Krait and Sybilla even more than the one between Fen and Asterie from the first book. Queen Sybilla Wymark’s city is in ruins after a Source-wielder attack, and the only way to secure her reign is to follow through on a blood oath to aid King Krait Darvanda. She expects his realm to be a barren desert, but instead, she discovers a thriving land full of magic—and a prophecy that seems to tie her destiny to Krait’s.
Krait is the perfect “shadow daddy”—brooding, grumpy, and deeply protective in ways he’d rather not acknowledge. His chemistry with Sybilla is electric, and I found myself completely hooked on their dynamic. The banter between them is sharp, and the tension is delicious. It’s a slow-burn romance that’s made even sweeter by their back-and-forth—Krait may be gruff, but the way he starts to soften around Sybilla is absolutely swoon-worthy. It’s a rare thing when a romance feels both hard-fought and inevitable, and I loved how their relationship evolved with such depth and emotional stakes.
I honestly found myself more invested in their romance than I was with Fen and Asterie from the first book. While Fen and Asterie had their own compelling dynamic, Sybilla and Krait have this perfect mix of vulnerability and toughness that really drew me in. Sybilla is fierce and independent, and watching Krait’s walls crumble, bit by bit, in the face of Sybilla’s persistence and strength is one of the highlights of the book.
The world-building, the magic, and the rising stakes keep the story gripping from start to finish, but it’s the romance that truly stole the show for me.
City of Snakes takes everything up a notch, so if you liked Born of Starlight, you're in for a treat! This sequel takes everything up a notch — the banter, the tension, the romance, the twists... all of it! Queen Sybilla and King Krait? Absolute fire. The way they go head-to-head, their stubbornness clashing with undeniable chemistry, is chef’s kiss 🔥.
Sybilla is such a force—she’s fierce, smart, and totally unafraid to take charge, even when everything seems to be falling apart around her. And Krait? A total grumpy king with a delicate heart. Watching Krait slowly warm up to Sybilla while she stays badass through it all is everything. Their friendship-first, slow-burn romance feels so organic, and it’s the perfect build-up. Even though a few of the characters are over 100 years old, it was a bit weird to read who dated who.
The plot is packed with intrigue, magic, and so many twists that’ll have you on the edge of your seat. Sybilla’s journey to the Sahlms is filled with surprises, and as the mysteries of her origins and Krait’s prophecy unfold, the stakes get even higher. The world-building is brilliant, though I would’ve loved a bit more information on the Sahlms specifically.
And shout-out to Elsadora and Ryn—they brought some much-needed comic relief and some fun moments that lightened the mood when things get intense. Oh, Emmerick, my sweet boy. Watching everything he went through broke me. Seeing how Emmerick fits into the bigger picture with Sybilla and Krait was a total game-changer. AND that character return, OMG!!!
All and all this book has the tension, the banter, the spice, the unexpected twists—it’s all there and so much more.
After a battle that left her city Luz in ruins, Queen Sybilla takes an oath to ally with Krait Darvanda, The King of the Wastelands. Bound to accompany him to his realm Sahlmsara as evidence of their alliance, Sybilla expects a Wasteland, where all the magic bearers had been exiled when magic was banned, but what she finds is a realm where magic is freely used everywhere. In her new ally she finds a King (and Shadow Daddy) who is kinder than he appears and although they work together to find a way to stop the Death Origin, she can tell he is hiding something that even her mind reading magic doesn't allow her to see.
This is book two of The Legends of Henosis and picks up right where Book 1 Born of Starlight left off. Sybilla is such a sassy character, who swears like a sailor and not a Queen. Krait is a gentle giant underneath it all, he has been devastated by loss but loves his people and wants them to be free to return to their homelands. The banter between them is quite entertaining as they try to deny their attraction. Krait's officers Elsedora and Ryn are wonderful additions to the growing cast of characters in the series. I love the lore behind the magic and there are major battles to be had in this book too. There are moments of heartbreak and real tension, when I say I'm devastated to have to wait for the next book I'm not kidding!
I do not wish to spoil anything so I'll simply say this is an amazing series and I highly recommend it if you're into fantasy involving mythology, magic systems, prophecies, fated mates, gods, shadow daddies and of course a little spice.
Thank you @sunnybabepr and Mariet Kay for the ARC, I thoroughly enjoyed this and can't wait for the next instalment in the series.
