OMG!! SO MUCH FUN! I laughed SO MANY times while reading it and I love that it was the POV of an adventurous great-grandma going on adventures along with her great-grand-children and I loved seeing those two kids find courage and have fun (especially the little girl was just a hoot). The illustrations were also fab! I wouldn't mind more Nora!

What kind of grandmother would you be? I plan to throw the rule book away, buy sweet and treats and be fun (but in case my children read this, whilst of course respecting their wishes). Furthermore, if you are lucky enough to get to be a great grandmother, do you think you would still offer your babysitting services or would you sit back and watch whilst rocking on a chair and sipping a cup of tea?

Nora will do no such thing! When Atticus (age 10, dull, annoying, always on his phone) and Autumn (age 3, wild, annoying, needs help wiping her bum) turn up for the weekend, to say she is dreading it would be an understatement. Through hilarious narrative and ‘asides’ she makes it clear to us that she doesn’t want to be a ‘GG’ and doesn’t like children one bit. What would a retired Monster Hunter even do to entertain children? Wait, what? Retired Monster Hunter? Yes, and when her arch nemesis, Ripclaw (aka Winifred) leaves a menacing letter pinned to her front door, she has no choice but to whisk the children away from their video games and head off on a riotous adventure aboard her trusty ship ‘The Wonky Goose’. Luckily, as Atticus points out, “everyone who plays computer games knows how to read a map” so maybe those pesky children will have their uses after all. Using her age to throw bad guys off the scent, she and the children must face rot-wraiths and electrosquibs in order to locate the treasure, after all, what’s the point in a map if it doesn’t lead to treasure? Can the children move from irritating inconvenience to ‘Best Apprentice Monster Hunter Ever’ status?

Most children’s books are told from the child’s point of view or the narrative focusses on the child protagonists. This book is hilariously written in the first person by an eccentric great granny (not that we are allowed to mention it) and she is a total hoot! Her general disdain for the children shines through in her laugh out loud commentary, accompanied by great caricature black and white illustrations of her antics as she drags the children in and out of perilous situations. Even the chapter titles are amusing! This has been extremely well received by the Book Clubbers age 8-12 and they are keen to read more of Nora’s highly entertaining babysitting adventures. Not sure that we would put her in charge of our children, Mary Poppins she most definitely is not! It’s a five star read from us. “Laters, Snotface”!

Nora and the Map of Mayhem is a brilliantly funny book written from the perspective of Nora, Atticus and Autumns gran. When a note appears on the house door they end up on an unexpected mission in which they have to fight many monsters along the way.

I loved the sound of this book from the plot but the unique writing style makes it even more of a joy to read. Never mind it being for eight year olds, I think even eighty year olds would find this book funny! The way Nora interacts with the reader through side notes by breaking the fourth wall is fantastic and I looked forward to these all through the books. I have not seen this done much before in stories (aside from with Sam Copeland books) and I love it as it gives the book a different feel to it and it allows for far more jokes to be included in a fun and often sarcastic way.

The storylines were gripping and I imagine would be even more so for the intended audience of primary school aged children. It was fun to see how Nora and her grandchildren reacted to each new and unusual circumstance they found themselves in and I love that they often got out of them themselves without needing outside help or weapons. The story has a lovely way of showing that you have enough power within you to achieve anything you want or need to and this is all tied up nicely at the end of the story with a heartwarming moment.

The illustrations really add to the story and I love how these were used as part of Nora's side notes too with silly little pictures she'd draw to demons what she was saying. The rest of the illustrations are full of magic and imagination as they show a wide range of monsters, some big, some small as well as lots of silly moments throughout the story. I really liked seeing the pictures of Autumn as she always added some cuteness and silliness to the chapter.

This is such an enjoyable read for all ages, I loved reading this story and I'll definitely be looking out for more books from this author/illustrator in the future.

Come here for what is a fairly standard daft fantasy action comedy adventure, dressed up really well as something different. Our narrator, for one thing, is certainly an unusual type – a great-grandmother, and one with both a secret history and a dislike of such mundane things as numbering her chapters correctly. Lumbered with both her great-grandchildren, who are named Atticus and Autumn yet don't get to spoil proceedings, she's immediately beset with a threat from her past. Cue one last mission, as she reluctantly lets spill what she used to get up to.

The resulting story is certainly high-octane, definitely heavy on the snot and wee and poo and suchlike, and very easily declared worth your attention. It is not the most edifying adventure, but it is fun, and exuberant escapism is not to be sniffed at unless it really does fail to entertain. This succeeded, from the call-backs in the plotting, to the children that don't annoy, to the rich benefits of the old gal's voice. GG is certainly a rarity in such books, and her level-headed, tell-it-like-it-is description, matched with her much more gung-ho side, is a joy. Of course, the children have two fathers and no mothers, because nuclear families are deemed sinful and easily under-represented by such books, but this is still a pleasurable lark, and still worth over four stars.

I can already imagine reading this to my primary school class, and the voices I could do! I've now passed it onto my 10 year old to enjoy, and so far so good!
The story follows Nora, a great grandmother (though don't let her catch you calling her that!) who's been hiding a secret for the last 50 years. This secret come unravelling when an enemy from the past shows up and thrusts Nora and her Great grand children into an adventure.
It's written in such a lovely, witty, conversational way that it barely even feels like reading. The snippets of extra information (from Nora, in a different font) felt like you were really being told a story and she was adding the details in.
The illustrations really add to the quirk of the story and helps the reader imagine the creatures and characters better, as well as beaking up the chunks of text too.
I liked that there was a seamless inclusion of not only a same sex couple but their children as well, it felt really authentic.
There was also a nice message about how being weird is just fine, and how opening up when you're worried can help just by saying things aloud to someone else, which lots of people will resonate with.

Nora and the Map of Mayhem hints at being amusingly subversive from the blurb at the back of the book: "Nope. Absolutely not. This book is NOT FOR YOU, so get your filthy hands off it RIGHT NOW. There's absolutely nothing interesting inside. It's definitely NOT a rip-roaring tale of ferocious beasts, lost treasure, thrilling battles and a slightly wobbly goose. So put the book down immediately and GO AWAY."

What follows is reminiscent of George's Marvellous Medicine, but told from the point of view of the (great)grandparent rather than the child as, once you open the book and turn the pages, the Charlie Brooker-esque tone from the blurb continues from Nora, the title character herself, whose weekend plans are disrupted when her great-grandchildren Atticus and Autumn are dropped off. After a stranger from Nora's past leaves a menacing note pinned to her front door, Atticus and Autumn are swept away on a hair-raising adventure dodging snot flinging sea monsters, battling thunderous electrosquibs and trying to escape from a very flappy goose...

I loved this book. Although a children’s book it still gave me lots of laughs and kept me entertained.
The story revolves around Nora and her great grand children Atticus and Autumn. But Nora is not your usual great grandmother material – she is a monster hunter. She is supposed to be looking after Atticus and Autumn but get threats from her arch enemy about a map that Nora stole decades ago, and that if she does not return it they will kill her. So begins an adventure that involves, amongst other things, stealing a boat, some gruesome and ferocious monsters, pirates, evil characters, very smelly and messy situations, and lots of other challenges.
The character of Nora is brilliant and the authors has an excellent ability to conjure up a picture of what is happening, helped by the superb illustrations. It has plenty of “yuk” and “laugh of out loud” moments and the story is strong enough to have keep me page turning. It would be a brilliant book to engage children, either to read to them or to encourage them to find the magic of books and storytelling.

This story contains elements of adventure and monsters.

Atticus and Autumn are left with their Great- grandmother Nora. When their father, Liam goes to an art exhibition.
Unexpectedly, a threatening note appears on Nora's door and a strange adventure begins for the children.

The text description and dialogues. Some parts of the story has different font and size. There are black and white illustrations.

I really liked the synopsis and the blurb, which is written to the reader by Nora telling you NOT to read the book. The author has done a fantastic job in describing the characters and setting. I like how it's written in the first person through Nora. Her thoughts and feelings are written as though it's a diary account. Nora is by far my favourite character in the story.

This would be an amusing and interesting read for younger readers who love to read about adventure and monsters.

Nora and the Map of Mayhem is a wildly entertaining adventure that had my child in stitches from start to finish. They couldn’t put it down, constantly asking to read 'just a bit more,' until we reached the end. This book turned our daily reading into a highlight of the day, which is exactly what a fantastic children’s book should do. My favourite part? When Autumn can smell everything but can’t tell the difference between poop and chocolate!

The characters—Autumn, Atticus, and their great Grandma Nora—are incredibly fun and find themselves in the most unexpected, hilarious situations. The story is packed with action, adventure, and a few delightfully gross moments. Nora’s playful jabs at the reader make it even more engaging.

The illustrations are vibrant and help bring the story to life, while the witty chapter titles and creative fonts add extra charm. All in all a complete great book! <3

This book is cheeky; Even just the introduction of this got me turning the page! I love how it’s got humour, quirkiness and most importantly it’s interesting and fun to read. The main character is not your typical nice old lady which makes it all the more entertaining to read as she goes about her day with her two grandchildren.

The front cover is bold and tells you exactly what to expect! There even more joyous and wild illustrations inside the book to go along with the story which I think would be brilliant for younger children/teens reading this to have imagery to go alongside it.

I think overall it’s a book with great imagination, and I’m still in the process of finishing it but it’s just something that cheers me up on a long day. Simple and easy to read, will definitely be making my niece read this cause i know she will enjoy a gem like this

What a gloriously fun packed adventure book Nora and the Map of Mayhem by Joseph Elliott is. Great Gran Nora AKA GG/Spit Tooth reluctantly looks after her great grandchildren Atticus (10) and Autumn (3) for the weekend whilst their dads are away. Nora is a florist by day but secretly is a Monster Hunter! The three set off to try and find the Map of Mayhem on the Craggenwich Isles after receiving a threatening note on the door. With creatures such as slitherwhilps, sneazles, nimphnorgs, electrosquibs and a goose this book is a funny, fast paced read. It is a great read alone book for older children or read along with younger ones the characters, monsters and wonderful illustrations by Nici Gregory will capture the hearts, minds and imaginations of many young readers. I highly recommend this book for readers approximately 8-12 years old.

My ten year old son really enjoyed reading this book. It is at a level where there is the odd illustration dotted through out the book but definitely more text than illustrations. The blurb on the back of the book doesn't give you too much information about the story but I could imagine the wording would draw a child into wondering what would happen in the book.

Autumn and Atticus are dropped off at their Grandmother's house by their father expecting a normal weekend. However Nora is no ordinary grandmother. What follows is a fun filled weekend of adventures involving the map of mayhem.

I would definitely recommend this book for children age 8-12 which enjoy reading fun filled adventure books. The language and writing style are perfect for a child reading the book by themselves before they go to sleep.

Atticus and Autumn are dumped off on their Grandma Nora for the weekend by their fathers.
Neither their parents or the kids themselves could possibly have envisaged the adventure that awaited them.
This was no normal weekend for they all set off on a swashbuckling adventure aboard the Wonky Goose after their grandma receives a threatening note about the map of mayhem.
Along the way they run into an old enemy of Nora's called Ripclaw, who also wants the map.
They are attacked by Rot Wraiths and also a gracken, narrowly escaping with their lives.
So, not by any stretch of the imagination was it a fun, regular weekend, cosy with their grandmother and some video games and relaxation.
This was a wonderful read, I know its a kids book, but the story had me hooked from the start, a lot of fun and a great read for kids and adults a like.
Hope there are more Nora adventures.

Nora and the Map of Mayhem is a laugh out loud adventure, thoroughly enjoyed by my child who refused to put it down until they’d finished “just a little bit more” several times! It definitely made daily reading a pleasure rather than a chore which is a sign of a great children’s book.

The characters, Autumn, Atticus and Nora their great Grandma, are great fun and find themselves in crazy unexpected scenarios with some hilarious consequences. There’s plenty of action and adventure (and disgusting bits too 😂) and Nora loves insulting the reader!

The illustrations break up the text and bring the story to life. I love the hysterical chapter names and there’s a very clever use of different fonts and styles throughout the book.

Spoiler alert - Apparently the best bit is when Autumn can smell everything but can’t tell the difference between poop and chocolate!

Autumn and Atticus are left with their great grandmother over a weekend.
But this isn't just any weekend.
They get involved in a rip roaring nautical adventure.
When Grandma Nora receives a sinister note she hares off to look for the map of mayhem, dragging the kids with her.
Aboard the Wonky goose they travel the seas, running into all sorts of scrapes.
Pursued by an old rival of Nora's, Ripclaw, attacked by Rot Wraiths and a Gracken.
This is NOT the run of the mill weekend at Grandma's they had been expecting.
This was hilarious, I loved it.
Nora is a right scream and the perfect, unconventional grandma.

Thank you to Readers First, the publishers and the author for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a nice different style of children’s book and I love the playful illustrations and the comedy throughout. It’s quite a silly story and the protagonist is a great granny which is rather an unusual heroine for a kids book but I really did fall for her by the end. It’s a bit too daft in places for my tastes but probably not overly so for its intended target readers and overall I thought it was a lot of fun. The only slight issue I had was sometimes it felt like it was aiming for an older target age-range and there were some scenes I thought were too mature for the readers who would find all the jokes about snot and poo hilarious. Otherwise a great read for 8-10 year olds and nice to have a mature female leading lady in a kids book.

I'm probably gonna give this 5 stars when I'm sobering up, since it's my biography (sort of), but lately I've been kinda cranky (no more navigating the seas...doctor's order) plus my editor complained about the chapters and their "order"...WHO CARES?!"

A Fun Read

This was a really funny and enjoyable read, which I couldn't put down. I read it in one sitting! Nora is not your average grandmother/great grandmother (although she doesn't like to admit to the 'great' bit), she is a famous (some would say infamous) monster hunter. When Nora agrees to look after her two great grandchildren, she didn't REALLY mean that she was willing to do it! However, she ends up the two of them for a couple of days. Unfortunately for Atticus and Autumn, an enemy of Nora's has resurfaced and has been sending her threatening letters. She has to flee her home and track down an old friend for some help...cue some madcap adventures with children in tow.
My only gripe with this book is that the 'quest' part of the book could've easily been fleshed out more and the story would have lasted longer. However, with this being a children's book, the length of the quest is probably about right. A recommended read.

Got this book for my daughter who is currently reading everything in sight. There is also a character called Autumn, a cheeky little girl like my youngest and shares a name which she hasn't come across before.

The synopsis hints at the fun and engaging writing to come, 'Nope, absolutely not. This book is not for you, so get your filthy hands off it right now'. A quick flick through shows a lot of pencil drawings hinting at the story unfolding, they reminded me of Roald Dahl and his amazing stories.

The writing was engaging and it was very descriptive, describing the characters in such a friendly and endearing way. The granny Nora comes across as a great fun character snd her personality jumps off the page.

Nora and her great grandchildren start off the story as a quiet babysitting stay and no one would have thought of the adventures that they would end up encountering.

This is a great read and will keep children entertained.

I was looking forward to sharing this with my 5 year old, but it's a fair bit longer than expected, so I'm gonna have to share it with my nephew and hope I get it back in a few years!

I actually found this really funny, and unfortunately, I found Nora strangely relatable. Nora's beloved Grandson and his husband have to go away for the night, leaving Nora to look after her (great!) Grandchildren, 11 year old Atticus and 3 year old Autumn.

What initially looks to be a boring weekend wiping a poopy bum and competing with a mobile phone, turns quickly into an adventure across the 23 seas, as Nora's Monster Hunting/Pirate-y past catches up with her.

Nora's oldest Arch Enemy Ripclaw, has come back with a vengeance, and has demanded Nora return the Map she stole from her decades before - or else!

Follow this quirky threesome race to find the map, discover and defeat many monsters along the way, and befriend a goose for good luck!

If you're looking for a seriously funny book, aimed at readers between the ages of 8 and 12, then 'Nora and the Map of Mayhem' ticks all the boxes.

Author Joseph Elliott, does a great job of keeping the reader entertained with this fabulously wacky plot, whilst Illustrator Nici Gregory's quirky images really bring the tale to life.

When brother and sister Atticus and Autumn get to stay with their Great Grandmother Nora, no one quite expects the weekend to turn into a full-blown adventure.

Despite her age, Nora has quite a few talents, and secrets, up her sleeve, and the trio end up on the ocean wave battling sea monsters and on the hunt of the mysterious Map of Mayhem. With a whole host of daring escapades and crazy exploits to contend with, the story rattles along at a fair pace, but still manages to send out some great messages about friendship, bravery, and doing the right thing.

Pursued by an old rival of Nora's, the story culminates in a race to find the Map first and return home to safety, but can an old lady, a young boy and his mischievous three year old sister, complete their quest and defeat their enemies in time?

This is such an inventive tale, with laugh out loud scenes and witty lines. It is pure escapism and fun, and is certain to convert the most reluctant of readers!

I honestly haven’t laughed so much, reading a book in such as long time, that I can’t remember the last time I read a full length novel, with laughter.

This novel Nora and the Map of Mayhem is so suitable for 8 to 89 years olds. I know my mum would find this hilarious!

Inside there is just what children like to read about, with things that turn literary quite funny with quirky mayhem, and mischief. And of course there’s monsters.

Why is Nora dreading it so much having to spend the whole weekend with her grandkids? Most great-grandma’s love it when they can spend a weekend with their grandchildren.

Nora is a funny type of great-grandma who thinks she too old to wiping her 3 year olds grand daughters bottom. And you can tell their great-grandma is out of up to the modern day times, when she finds her 10 year old grandson annoying always playing on his mobile phone, well that’s what kids do these days.

Just by looking at the cover alone, I could tell it’s going to be one of those hilarious unputdownable reads!

Honestly this book is a really treasure, I just know you all will love reading it, having a good laugh!

This is a wonderful, crazy adventure book for children aged 8 to 12 years old. I have been reading it to my grandson that is younger though and he thought it was funny, this is the guide age though.
Atticus and Autumn’s fathers had left them with their great grandmother, she wasn’t really interested though but thought that she should say yes.
Things started going wrong right from the start though.
Autumn keeps running around shouting she wanted something to eat even though she was told there wasn’t anything. She found a tin of fruit in the cupboard and although they were out of date Nora gave them to her thinking it would keep her quiet for a little while.
After having eaten them she started acting silly and then eventually, sleepy, it seems the fruit had been in alcohol and now Autumn was drunk.
There was banging on the front door, when Nora looked it was a threatening letter attached to the door with a knife, and so the adventure begins..

This is the story of what happened when two children, Atticus and Autumn went to stay with their great-grandmother for a short time. Their great-grandmother is a very unusual lady named Nora who does not really like the idea of looking after children, but her grandson and his husband need somebody to look after the children for a while so Nora thought that she had better offer to do it.
The children think they will have an easy time staying with great- granny, but they are in for a shock. When they all go outside they notice a threatening letter stuck on the front door of Nora`s house . The letter is telling Nora that the person who wrote it wants something back from Nora or else there will be trouble. Then, when they get to Nora`s shop , they notice another letter and this one is even more threatening. Nora knows what the person wants and sets out to find it. This takes the three of them on a really exciting adventure.

I really enjoyed this book. It is the tale of Atticus and Autumn who are being looked after by their very grumpy great grandmother who really does not want to take care of them. What follows is a brilliant rollercoaster ride of thrills. Nora has an interesting past which soon catches up with her and pulls the three of them into some amazing adventures.
Such a great story, from Atticus and Autumn having two dads to grumpy Nora, such a feisty great granny. More please Joseph Elliott.
