Heiress of Lies

Rate this book
Sophomore year at university was going fine until Calista Kazumi found the bodies. Until she uncovered the lies. Until Jonathan Cooper slashed his way into her life with his annoyingly handsome face and absurd talk of magic.

But as much as she tries to stay out of it, the truth grabs Calista by the throat and pins her to the reality she never knew she was being kept from. With a notoriously private father, a vicious trainer, and a glamorous best friend, Calista’s loyalty and obedience are put to the test in ways she never thought mattered. And that’s before she could accept that things like supernatural stones and enchanted steel swords weren't mere fairytale stories after all.

In this debut urban fantasy novel, Tomoko Yuzawa pens a tale of wicked crime, unexpected allies and explores what would happen if samurai not only existed, but were forced up against a savage gangster who isn’t at all who he seems.

Thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in this book! The main character is a strong female lead who you want to champion. I found the writing straightforward, yet captivating - the perfect blend to draw me in and invest in the storyline. If you read it, you’ll understand why we’re all asking WHAT’S NEXT?!

Great read! Gritty, a little magical, a little violent, and a lot of fun! Cannot wait for book two and to learn more about the magic system and the history of the school!

This book was a total adrenaline rush. I read it in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down. The action scenes were cinematic, fast-paced, and full of unexpected twists that left me completely floored. It honestly felt like front-row seats to an action movie with Kung Fu ( the tv show on the CW vibes ) and I was all in.

Cali is such a powerful and dynamic main character. Watching her transformation into a bold, fearless woman was one of my favorite parts of the story. And Jonathan Cooper? Total book boyfriend material. Protective, intense, and absolutely swoon worthy.

I don’t usually read books that are like this, but I was blown away by how much I loved this one. So glad I discovered this author, and I’m already counting down the days to book two!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I thoroughly enjoyed myself with this book! I love the dark theme that dominates 99% of the story. It’s so moody and such a slow burn at the same time 🔥❤️‍🔥
It’s really hard to describe the tension and suspense of this book without giving it away – but trust me: if you like supernatural urban fantasy and mafia x samurai THIS is YOUR book!

For this debut novel, it’s incredible. The world building, the characters, it’s top notch. The main heroine is completely relatable in ways you never would imagine! Don’t sell yourself short, read this book! I’m already ready for a second!

Heiress of Lies by Tomoko Yuzawa is a gritty, atmospheric urban fantasy that was SUCH a mood read. I read this on a trip to Seattle, the very city where the story unfolds, and it honestly elevated the entire reading experience. As the rain drizzled over the city’s skyline and the gloom settled in, it felt like I was walking side-by-side with the FMC through the shadowy and grungy alleys and hidden underworlds of Seattle. The timing and setting couldn’t have been more perfect, making this a true mood read. This is literally the perfect book for someone who is just here for the vibes.

The story follows a seemingly ordinary young woman who soon discovers that her roots lie deep within a secret and dangerous magical underground filled with fighting, gangs, betrayal, and hidden strength. While she appears fragile at first glance, our fierce FMC proves to be anything but. Her transformation and resilience are gripping to witness. And yes, there’s magic, which only adds more texture to this already complex and darkly enchanting tale.

One of the novel’s standout elements is the descriptive worldbuilding. Yuzawa paints Seattle with a brush dipped in shadow and intrigue, making it feel both familiar and foreign. You can practically hear the rain tapping on alleyways, feel the cold mist cling to your skin, and sense the weight of secrets that lie beneath the city streets. The author’s attention to mood and environment is exceptional and really anchors the story.

That said, the pacing does start a bit slow. It takes time for the story to gain momentum (like 50% IMO), but once it does, it grips tightly. The action sequences are packed with intensity, and the emotional beats hit just as hard. My biggest critique is that the book could have benefitted from another round of editing as there were occasional grammatical errors and missing words that slightly disrupted the flow. While not deal-breaking, they were noticeable enough to mention.

This book was also my first author PR mail. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity because I might never have picked it up otherwise. Yuzawa is definitely a voice to watch in the fantasy genre, and I truly hope more readers give Heiress of Lies the chance it deserves. If you love moody settings, fierce yet complex heroines, and hidden magic in urban backdrops, add this to your TBR immediately.

This book had me hooked from the beginning! Throughout the story, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor at least three times. The FMC has been raised to believe she will never be good enough and that becomes part of her identity. She seeks validation from those she trusts, yet her world is completely turned upside down. I loved seeing how she navigated her insecurities while finding the answers she seeks. The MMC is mysterious, protective and respectful. His sense of duty and intuition blend into a beautiful character that the reader is drawn towards.

Betrayals on top of betrayals, shocking answers and twists. The pacing of the story is done well. I never felt like it was too slow or moving too fast past certain situations.

I loved how the author’s use of Japanese cultural references and phrases in a way that was immersive yet very approachable to the reader. You don’t need to know what certain phases mean but it is explained within the context of the story in a way that is easy to understand. I absolutely loved this style and setting. It made it easy for the reader to truly understand what expectations and traditions would be placed on the FMC growing up and why her father’s actions would be so easily accepted.

I cannot wait to read what’s next!

I'd say this was a high 3.5 stars~4 stars.

This book has SO much going on its almost hard to put down. That being said- us following Calista as her world is flipped upside down is wonderfully done. I was hanging on every flip of the page, wondering when the glass would shatter.

I was a bit upset that the "weak daughter" trope was so strong, but she does make up for it. Its infact more so that she doesn't belive in herself then it is her being weak. That was a lovely suprise.

One of the things I struggled with was the use of names. I'm not used to Japanese names, but the switching of them constantly had me stopping and trying to figure out who was who. Johathan Cooper was known as both Johanthan and Cooper depending on the chapter and that really tossed me for a loop. I will say, that did frustrate me a bit.

But, all that being said, I can't wait for the second one. It leaves on such a cliffhanger and the last 20% of the book is so action packed that I'm counting down the days till the second book is out!

**Thank you to the author for this book. All thoughts are my own.

Ok so I was kind of bored in the beginning of the book I’m not gonna lie, which is normal for me. I love world building and I also am impatient 🤷🏽‍♀️. But holy shit was I IN IT. For a debut by someone who writes for fun, this was impressive. I love the premise and I eventually started liking the FMC. She was low key annoying at first. I get that trauma shaped her but I felt irritated rather than in her corner. Also, and this is a really small thing, but the author used “queue” instead of “cue” which bothered me a little. Obviously not enough to make me stop reading (because what a silly reason to stop reading a book).

It’s a slow burn in the best way. Like, at this point, it’s barely catching. But you know it’s gonna go up in flames soon and I’m so ready for it.

I’m very excited for the next book because I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

This book is good, decent read. It starts with a female character Calista and has an odd relationship with her father. The story starts to fall flat for me down the line, when the character begins to question things. it spins off to complicated things hard for me to follow. Some things I needed to look up because I wasn't clear what it was. The author just assumes the reader should know these things. For this reason, I only gave it 3 stars. I wish I can give more it just falls all over the place for me.

Loved this debut book! Loved the fast-paced storytelling and the very relatable female main character. There's a simplicity in the way the story is told that makes it easy to fall into.

One of the things I really liked was how the book included a lot of Japanese culture and samurai vibes. It made the story feel really different from other fantasy or action books I’ve read.
You can tell this book is just the beginning and that something big is coming. It’s clearly building up to a lot more, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I need book two now!

This took me by complete surprise by how good the story was. It was also more gory than I expected. I was pleasantly surprised!

Calista is an only child who lives above the noodle shop she works at, which her Father also owns. She trains weekly to fight, but why would a noodle waitress need to know how to fight? She meets a handsome stranger and all of a sudden things start to unravel and truths come to light. Is the life she’s known all a lie? And who’s side is she on?

Unfortunately I DNF at 17%
I feel so bad, I wanted to love this book but honestly I don’t think it was my type. The writing was good, the pacing maybe a little too slow for me. I was just bored, maybe it is going to pick up later but I was losing the point, and at 17% I just still wasn’t gripped by the characters.

The sweet author sent me this book and I wanted nothing more than to finish to give my review, but it’s just not my type

Heiress of Lies delivers a thrilling blend of mystery, action, and magic set against a modern world where ancient powers and ruthless enemies lurk in the shadows. Calista Kazumi’s sophomore year is turned upside down when she uncovers dark secrets and meets Jonathan Cooper, whose slow-burning tension with her enriches the story with engaging tension.

I appreciated the well-balanced pacing and adrenaline-fueled action scenes that kept me hooked throughout. Calista is a compelling protagonist; her growth is evident, and I’m eager to see her truly come into her own now that her hidden past is unfolding. I felt for her as she navigates the shock of discovering her life was built on lies, yet she faces it with surprising resilience and curiosity.

The world-building and magic system have a slow, deliberate buildup, which works well here, and I’m excited to dive deeper into the enchanted stones, magical steel, and the modern samurai lore in the next book. Jonathan’s presence as both an infuriating distraction and a protective figure adds delicious tension, making their evolving relationship one of my favorite parts.

While some aspects could be explored more thoroughly, this debut novel from Tomoko Yuzawa offers a promising start to a series that blends supernatural crime thriller elements with dark urban fantasy and a romance that’s only just beginning to ignite. Fans of complex characters, magical mysteries, and action-packed stories will find much to enjoy here. I’m looking forward to seeing where this journey goes next!

An impressive debut novel by Tomoko Yuzawa! Heiress of Lies is an action-packed read full of family secrets, hidden identities, killer fight scenes, and a splash of magic.

Calista’s juggling premed classes by day and waitressing at her father’s noodle shop at night. In between, she’s training under his ruthless righthand man to be a daughter he might finally be proud of. But one night, she witnesses something she was never meant to see and her world flips upside down. A deadly underworld. A lifetime of lies. There’s no going back to her simple life after this.

“𝙔𝙤𝙪’𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜. 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙙𝙤 𝙄 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥?”

The warrior and the waitress - what a pair 🔥 While very much a slow burn (no spice), the tension between Calista and Jonathan was everything 😮‍💨 The glances, the banter, the way he’d do anything to protect her. I really hope there’s a second book in the works because I need more of these two!!
