ARC review of Dead by Dusk, by @nellyhill.writes

"He kisses me as if he's trying to use his lips to write poetry onto my skin..."
"The thing about poetry though is it usually ends in tragedy"

This quote from the book perfectly captures the main themes of the story. Dead by Dusk is a romantic thriller, and as my first time reading a book with those two themes intertwined, I was not disappointed. The romance was written into the overall plot of the story, adding to the mystery and suspense of what's happening rather than being its own separate thing, and I loved that.

The FMC is a badass who loses her memory and has to rely on her instincts and skills to navigate a dangerous situation while also listening to her heart for answers about the man she loves, and the man who betrayed her.

Also, my favorite part, of course, is the note from her dog 🐕

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks to the author, E.C. Hill, I had the opportunity to read "Dead by Dusk". I would call this an action mystery/thriller with some romance and suspense. The beginning reminded me of Saw 2 in a way with multiple people waking up in a semi trapped house not knowing how they got there. (that's all I will give away). It has a great pace and balance. It uses multiple POVs and flashbacks and really works well for the story and delivers on emotional depth as well as suspense and action.

Also Silene is a bad ass!

LISTEN. This book hooked me from the start. It had some very good characters, a wonderful plot, and some solid suspense and twists. I truly enjoyed this book, and I do highly recommend it. The 4 and not 5 star rating is purely because I feel like some plot points could have had more space to have been explored, which I’ll put below under a spoiler warning. Otherwise, the romantic relationship was STELLAR, with some very poetic quotes and moments where I truly loved the characters and their relationship. The writing was also amazing, and it only took me this long to read it due to work. Thank you SO much to EC for letting me be part of the ARC group for this. Truly an amazing read <3.

****SPOILERS BELOW****

As I said, I was hooked. This book had a very interesting plot, and the characters were pretty well-rounded, though I did have a couple questions I was left with after finishing. Primarily, I feel as though the villain could have had more depth and whatever the main group was investigating could have been a smidge clearer, because I was left not quite sure what he’d really done, besides killing innocents- was there a true big thing, or was he just paranoid? Also, in relation to the trackers, why was it only Ronan and Silene that had them? Nathaniel was put into the situation same as them, and each of the people involved were big players in the main problem, so why were the trackers only set on those two? There are loose answers to these I believe, but I believe they could have also been more exploration of these plot points.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book had me at the edge of my seat! It felt like I was playing an intense game of clue, screaming and trying to determine which character was a traitor. The plot of this book was thrilling and I NEEDED to keep reading to get to the bottom of the situation. Each of the characters were dynamic and kept me wanting to know more about them. And Ronan and Silene?! HEART EYES😍 I loved the relationship between these two, from the incredible respect of boundaries to the touch him and die energy. I couldn’t get enough! I loved how this story kept you on your toes, and the plot twist at the end was unexpected in the best way. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants a romantic thriller with a good mystery. I cannot wait to see what incredible story E.C. brings us next!

This is a new genre for me. I love thriller/suspense movies so it’s kind of wild it took me so long to pick up a thriller/suspense book. This one did not disappoint. The characters were great. The storyline was easy to follow. And the twists were fantastic! This has a side of romance that didn’t feel out of place. This is a great book for anyone that enjoys suspense and thrillers. I highly recommend it!

Let me just say this book took off running right from the start! So intense, I was hooked right away! So much action, mystery and suspense. Not to mention a strong and fierce female protagonist. I’m not huge into romance but Silene and Ronan’s relationship was woven so well throughout this thrilling storyline it worked. Definitely recommend!

Dead by Dusk is an electrifying debut novel by EC Hill, blending the thrills of a romantic thriller with dynamic characters and an immersive, suspense-filled plot. Set primarily in the woods and a single house, Hill masterfully crafts a world that, though limited in its physical scope, feels tangible and alive. The atmosphere is charged with tension, keeping readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

At the heart of this story is the captivating romance between Silene and Ronan. While the romance isn't the main focus, it plays a significant role in enriching the plot. Silene, the female main character (FMC), is a force to be reckoned with—strong, smart, and fiercely independent. She doesn’t need anyone to save her, and it’s refreshing to see that Ronan recognizes and respects this. Their relationship is built on mutual respect and admiration, which is a welcome change from more traditional tropes where the female lead often requires rescuing.

Silene’s badassery and Ronan’s supportiveness create an ideal dynamic that drives the story forward. EC Hill excels at blending suspense and action, with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing. The thriller elements—intense action sequences, mysterious flashes from the past, and expertly executed plot twists—are the standout features here, keeping the pages turning.

The author’s use of multiple POVs and flashbacks is another highlight, adding layers to the story as we piece together the puzzle leading to the climax. The narrative structure is well-paced, revealing just enough to keep readers engaged while maintaining a steady buildup of suspense.

One of the novel's most gratifying elements is that it stands alone, with no cliffhangers in sight. The ending is satisfying and ties everything together beautifully, making Dead by Dusk a well-rounded and rewarding read.

Overall, Dead by Dusk is a thrilling, action-packed debut with a strong female lead and a captivating mystery. EC Hill has crafted a tale that successfully balances romance and suspense, delivering a satisfying experience for readers looking for both excitement and emotional depth. A solid four-star read that leaves you eager to see what Hill writes next.

ARC Review: Dead By Dusk by E.C Hill
Rating 5⭐️ and no spice

This book was everything and more. It had me on the edge of my seat literally. I needed the secrets, lies, memories, just everything to find out who the liar was and why they all were there. The plot twists in this book were twisting haha I had no clue who the liar was til it was exposed and then the information given shocked me more than anything. Great work and amazing debut by Nelly Hill and I am excited to see what she does next.

'I kind of like the sight of a man at my mercy.'

Our FMC is spicy and full of sarcastic humor. Staring death in the face? Well, she'll get a good jab at his insecurities before he tries to takes her down.

'You called me a bitch.
Say it again. I liked it.
'

This book is fast paced and there's always something going on, some secret about to be revealed and it's all very exciting. The action keeps you locked in and eager to turn the pages. The suspense is palpable and you're never really sure who you can trust.

Just who is lying?

I really loved the named chapters. I always take a moment to try and figure out how the titles will come into play.

Overall, I really enjoyed this exciting read. I can't wait to read what E. C. Hill puts out next. The writing was incredible and immersive.

An incredibly immersive and thrilling tale of love and deception

Where to begin with this remarkable novel by the beautiful E.C. Hill, there isn’t enough praise in the world that I could offer her for delivering this twisted tale. But while were all here I’ll give it my best go. To start of the writing style is magnificent there was truly times I would confuse things I read for memories I began to loose sight of where the story ended and reality began, she has the most beautifully tragic way of portraying each and every character as more then just words on a page, which also led me to become highly attached to more then one of the characters. Secondly I give the upmost respect for this marvelous author for the way that she managed to portray different kinds of love she shows complete and unwavering devotion while also showing the struggles that accompany trying to love someone when you can’t fully trust yourself to make the right decision, there’s friendly love there a slight maternal instinct kind of love, and then there is the kind of love that far to many people in this world can say they’ve experienced, the kind where you love someone with so much of our heart that when they are hurt you would BURN THE WOLRD DOWN to avenge them. This story has beloved characters, plot twist that keep you on the edge of your seat, action, passion, and the perfect balance of questions cause Seline may not know who to trust but you don’t either.

First from my indie reading month series is Dead by Dusk by @nellyhill.writes !! Thank you for the ARC!

🪓This story was a rollercoaster of emotions! This dual POV story is character-led but in the best way possible. It was epic, intense, gruesome, and raw. The MFC, Silene, was a total badA! She was battle-tested and showed her skills. But she was also vulnerable, caring, and sincere with the people she loved. She was a very well-designed lead character. I loved her.

🌕The characters in these stories are truly fleshed out. You feel like you get to know the core people as individual characters through the eyes of the main characters. @nellyhill.writes does a great job of building connections and then shattering you 😂.

🪓You don’t know who to trust! Sincerely, you are walking this anxiety-ridden journey with Silene, and you start to doubt everyone in the story. Who’s the bad guy? Who’s lying? Can you even trust the main character’s POV? The author does a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole read.

🌕Now to the romance. The romance between the MML, Ronan, and Silene is raw and authentic. You feel their love for each other even when there are intense doubts and chaos all around them. Ronan grounds Silene in every way, even when she pushes against him. Their love story is very well-placed and heart-wrenching.

If you like mystery, suspense, slashing and epic fight scenes, romance, and amazing platonic friendships, pick Dead by Dusk!

Thank you so much to EC Hill for allowing me to read her ARC 😍

Action packed, thriller with a bit of romance and lots of gore.

THIS BOOK WOULD MAKE SUCH A GOOD MOVIE @netflix pick it up 😂

I read this book in a day - fully entrenched. Normally I don’t love a memory type trope but this story starts out in such an interesting way. A bunch of people waking up trapped in a seemingly abandoned house with no memories at all and a shit ton of things to figure out. Throughout the story I was consistently trying to pick up small details from each character to see which ones of them may have more information than the let on. I was on the edge of my seat during the MULTIPLE action scenes and excessively rooting for the mildly sadistic morally grey FMC because I am unhinged for a powerful woman.

The book is written in dual POV which I liked a lot. I didn’t expect the twist at the end but I was so focused on what was happening during the story I didn’t analyze further honestly.

There were some editing mistakes but that’s normal in an ARC and I’m sure those will be fixed in the published copy.

I definitely recommend this for people who don’t mind some blood, like a little mystery & are looking for a thrilling quick read.

Think female Liam Neeson and you have our FMC 😈 enjoy!

The reason my interest in this book got piqued? The a-ma-zing cover! 😍 Actually rather simple, but... alleszeggend, zéker als je 't boek gelezen hebt.
TBH, Dead By Dusk was one of the 'weirdest' book I've read in a while. But also the book with one of the baddest kick a$$ heroines I've read in a while. 🩸🔪💀🪓❤️

While writing this review, I actually still didn't know how to rate Dead By Dusk? 😆
Especially the first half of the book, I had NO idea who/where/how/what I was reading? 🙄 Everything was utterly confusing, and ~ honestly ~ I was on the verge of giving up several times. However... my curiosity about what would happen next was stronger. I kept coming back... I just needed to know! 😉 Which in itself is a feat and is, for me, worth an extra star. 😀
E.C. Hill was a new-to-me-author. Looks like this is her first book? Interesting... definitely promising.
My rating: 3,6 stars.

If you enjoy the sensation of feeling like you are being read to by the author, being able to place yourself into the scenes, or can visualize the essence of the text as it comes alive off of the pages, then "Dead by Dusk" by E.C. Hill is definitely an author whose book(s)a you should read.

With the characters being well defined, there is still just enough of a distinct mystery in play to keep you from being able to pinpoint exactly who the "mole" is. At least until you allow yourself to follow the foreshadowing in the pivotal moments of this story line. Turning the pages of this book leads you through a myriad of emotions, keeping you intrigued and anticipating the next plot twist. Just when you think you are clever enough to pin it, the writer pulls the rug out from under your feet, and spirals you into another direction. Which literally means, this book is one that you will not want to put down.
As a long-time reader of a multitude of genres, I can say, this author can hold her own in the arena of intrigue, mystery and written illustration with a sense of humor, charm. humility and knowledge.

Review dead by dusk

The Maze runner meets Wanted.

Okay so this story wasn’t for me.
I can’t read thrilling plots that have me on the edge of my seat the entire time, with words so amazingly used I feel like I’m right there with them.

See what I did there? I LIED! Which is basically what EVERYONE seems to be doing in this book THE ENTIRE TIME!!
Holy sh*tstorm is this book good!

I’m not diving into the content because I like to keep my reviews spoiler-free, but if you love fast-paced, thrilling reads with a romantic subplot that complements the story without taking over, this one is for you.

High rating, easy! The writing was near perfect!!!

A few quotes I loved:

“The room is just as I remember it: coated in death and hidden truths.”

“He kisses me as if he’s trying to use his lips to write poetry onto my skin”

“I’m thankful I can keep her safe while she sleeps. Even if she wakes up and hates me for it.”

“Their blood will be spilled come last light, and every drop will be a love letter and an apology for all the words I have been robbed of.”

All in all: just read it and dare to disagree ;)

Holy wow! This book was everything I wanted and more.
I am a sucker for a good thriller, but it's been a moment since I read one that left me greedily flipping the pages to find out what happens next. This book was an incredible combination of thrill, bloody gore, betrayal, doubt, and undoing.
At surface level this is a bloody free-for-all of a worst nightmare nobody ever wants to ever find themselves in, but digging deeper there is this incredibly emotional underbelly and exploration of fighting personal traumas, defeating your inner demons and fighting for a life beyond pain and suffering, and moving past betrayal. I was blown away by how emotionally attached I found myself to the characters within this book and how much they broke me apart and put me back together again.
I can tell that the author poured their blood, sweat, and tears into the pages of this book. It was truly one of my favorite books of all time.
If you like Hunger Games, Saw, and The Bourne Trilogy, then I think you'll absolutely love this book!

This was such an amazing debut novel! I haven’t really ever read a romantic thriller but since I could not put this down even once, I clearly have to give this subgenre a try! The plot kept me on the edge and the atmosphere was freaky but beautiful at the same time??

First of all, Silene?? I am so obsessed with her its not even funny. All the aesthetic videos I’ve seen on the authors ig page have me wanting to be this girl cause I gotta learn how to fight like that ‼️
She is so independent and smart and literally needs no one to save her. And her man Ronan was just so supportive of her 🥹

Overall I absolutely adored the concept of the book and really enjoyed my time reading this! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a mystery book that keeps you guessing in the best way possible!

Thank you to the author for an arc to read and review!

“Dead By Dusk” combines the aspects of romance and thrillers in a beautiful way. We follow a protagonist who awakens with no memory, setting off a chain of events that blends mystery with a simmering romance. As the plot unfolds, the stakes rise, revealing a web of deception that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The interplay between love and danger creates a compelling atmosphere, making it difficult to put the book down. Overall, this tale masterfully combines intrigue and passion. I had the honor of being able to beta read this book and I couldn’t express how amazing it was enough. I can’t wait for it to fully release as E.C. Hill has a beautiful way of telling stories!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely loved every single thing about this book. The thrill of not knowing who the traitor was, the complexity of the characters, everything was perfect!!! This way Ronan is head over heels in love with Silene oh my good lord but also the way he respected every single boundary she set throughout this book, honestly chefs kiss🤌🏻 the thriller part of the book was so good I did not expect the plot twist at the end and the way you never knew what was coming next!!! I loved E.C.’s writing throughout the book it was very poetic and just sucked you right in!!! What a great way to start off 2025 by reading this awesome ARC!!!!!

It’s to be said that this book isn’t for everyone. That’s why we have variety, right?! However, with that said this is a story about love rekindled, yet shadowed by chaos and bloodshed that provides a great balance of passion and danger.
This book has a prepossessing nature that leaves you craving more.
For every question answered, more arise in its place.
Embrace the love, embrace the fight…remember what makes you, you.

This book was so amazing and always kept me so intrigued & on the edge of my seat! I was always wondering what was going to happen next not to mention who to even trust! This book was so easy for me to get lost in my imagination and picture myself right there watching it like it was a movie! The YA thriller/murder mystery/romance was mind blowing! I am so happy I stepped out of my comfort zone and read Dead by dusk (I typically read dark romance with spice) because it allowed me to explore the a new world & now I’m obsessed!!

Okay, so I read this book because the author had stated that someone pirated her book and I felt super bad for her…
What I didn’t expect was that I was going to be absolutely indulged into this book! I love that Silene is a strong and powerful FMC. I love Ronan and how he treats Silene.
I cried at the end but ended up so happy with how things turned out. I expected the liar to be someone else and I’m sad that it was who it was. But I loved this book! Kept me guessing and wanting to find out what is happening & who is the culprit!

I had so much fun with this book! The mysteries that surrounded all 6 of them amazed me. I loved the 2 lovers and the remembering their memories together as well with the friends. The 4 that were hunted and what happened with them were unbelievable. The one that was lying was so good at playing the innocent game until it was figured out by the others. A really great read

Thriller wasn’t a book category I used to read, but since starting, this is one of the best ones I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on. It’s suspenseful, daring, intoxicating event. The romantic elements for our FMC help tie the twists and turns together. Jump into this multi-POV story with flashbacks & memories, and see where the mystery takes you.

"Bobby got kebabbed"

"Home, Killer. I want to go home."

A suspenseful thrilling ride. Giving 'Ready or Not' vibes. Action packed from the start and very very bloody. Triller in every way with just the right amount of romance throughout.

POVs following Silene and Ronan, where they and 4 others all wake up in a strange house in a secluded area with forced amnesia. They don't know who they are, who they can trust, someone is lying, someone is a traitor, and they are trying to find their way out, while also being hunted. As they fight to survive their memories start start to resurface through flashbacks/dreams etc - creating more mistrust and filling them with rage and uncertainty.

Silene is an absolutely amazing FMC. She is loyal, smart, badass fighter. She has so much strength and rage. Her flaws, vulnerability, the way she is fighting through her demons make her someone you want to see win.

Ronan is the best of the best, a mans man if you will - quick wit and extremely amazing fighter but his affection and love and the way he really sees Silene - is everything.

I found some of the returning memories to be more of a 'telling vs. showing' and almost wished there were more POVs from the other characters or more information/backstory as we find out who the traitor was. I did predict some of it but damn some of those twists really got me.

I absolutely love this cover btw - Overall really enjoyable romantic thriller. I can't wait to see more from E.C Hill. P.S the note from E.C Hill's dog is amazing.

Thank you so much for the ARC and opportunity to read for my honest review.

this book wasn’t at all what i thought it would be, but i’m really glad i stayed with it anyway.

dead by dusk is a concoction of mystery, action and horror. it’s very graphically gruesome in parts, and wasn’t the best book to read in the lunch cafeteria at work, but the plot is so compelling i had to keep reading to find out wtf was going on.

it’s a very well written debut and i’m grateful i got to read an arc and try, alongside with the characters, to figure out a way to make it out of the nightmare they find themselves in.

Wow. Is this in the thriller genre? Bc it definitely felt that way & I loved every moment. The beginning had me glued to my seat. “One of us is lying” ugh it created this false sense of security in me. I wanted to trust everyone & then the puzzle pieces started to click into place. The storyline was laid out perfectly. I loved how it way a dual POV & featured the present & past. I started thinking how does this person connect to this person etc. That one of us is lying quote kept getting to me & I started to turn suspicious on everybody. To have the truth laid out tho, omfg.

FEMININE RAGE ❤️‍🔥 love that ish! Silene is a badass. She would take on 2, 3 etc big men & beat them down. It was perfection. I love whenever she picked up her axes & the little Black dagger 🖤🗡️

The ending definitely pulled at my heart strings. It’s a happy ever after but 🥲

4.5- Who can you trust? When you start the book you are hooked and pulled in. It was great. Allowed you to feel the horror/thriller. The MFC had a lot to deal with with having the limited information she had. The thought of not finding a way out. The thought of fingering out the clues. It’s like an escape room meets The 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle meets Saw. It’s crazy. It does get a little slow in the middle but then it ends with a bang. Overall, a great story. I want more because I love multiple POVs that I wish I was seeing it from their point of view too…
