Twisted Sisters Midlife Maelstrom #14

Mardi Gras Murders & Midnight Masquerades

Rate this book
Nothing ruins Mardi Gras season like finding bodies carved with ancient power-draining symbols and decorated with creepy-ass carnival masks.

For the Six Twisted Sisters, New Orleans' most notorious magical troubleshooters, this is just the start of their problems. Someone's hunting both supernatural and mundane victims, using twisted versions of their family's own grimoires, and building up to a demon-summoning ritual that'll make the city's bloodiest carnival in 1873 look like a kiddie parade.

With a swanky supernatural masquerade ball on the horizon, bodies dropping at historic locations around the city, and their protective wards going haywire across the French Quarter, the sisters are hip-deep in magical chaos. Add in a secret society of supernatural elites, mysterious artifacts surfacing at underground auctions, and a forgotten ritual from the 1920s threatening to rip open the veil between worlds, and they've got themselves a party.

The Six Twisted Sisters have kicked supernatural ass across the Big Easy before, but this time they're facing an enemy who knows their tricks—and is using their own family magic against them. Good thing these witches have enough combined power to make ancient vampires nervous, supernatural hotties watching their backs, and a caffeine addiction that would make a crack addict look tame.

In a city where magic runs darker than chicory coffee, they'll need it all to stop this killer from turning their masquerade into the deadliest supernatural showdown New Orleans has ever seen.

Okay, Mardi Gras Murders & Midnight Masquerades by Brenda Trim had me hooked from page one—and I swear on a beignet and my emergency glitter stash, this is one of my favorite entries in the Twisted Sisters Midlife Maelstrom series yet.

Listen, nothing says “welcome to Mardi Gras” like corpses covered in power-draining symbols and creepy voodoo-meets-circus masks turning up all over New Orleans. But the Six Twisted Sisters? They don’t run from creepy—they run straight into it, stilettos and all. These women are chaos incarnate in the best way: fierce, foul-mouthed, and bonded by blood, battle, and a seriously dysfunctional magical family tree.

What I loved about this one was the twist—someone’s using their family’s grimoires against them. That personal layer added so much tension. It’s not just about stopping a random big bad anymore—it’s about someone throwing their legacy in their faces and trying to raise hell (literally) with it. The emotional stakes? Sky high. The magical stakes? Through the damn roof.

And don’t even get me started on the masquerade ball scene—I was living for the mix of glam, danger, and magical mayhem. And of course, the sisterly banter is everything. I swear, every time they trade barbs or rally together to smack down evil with a cocktail in one hand and a spell in the other, I want to crawl into the book and join the coven. They’re hilarious, unfiltered, and you feel the love between them, even when they’re side-eyeing each other over questionable outfit choices or spell ingredients.

Also, shoutout to the supernatural hotties because yes ma’am, they bring the heat and the backup without ever trying to dull the shine of these powerhouse women. That balance is chef’s kiss.

Brenda Trim just keeps delivering book after book that mixes murder, magic, midlife sass, and sisterhood into the perfect potion. If you love stories with strong AF women, wild magical shenanigans, and villains who mess with the wrong witches, this one will light you up like Bourbon Street at midnight.

This book didn’t just cast a spell on me—it threw me into the middle of a magical Mardi Gras murder mystery, and I didn’t want to leave. These sisters? They’re the queens of chaos, and I’m absolutely along for the ride.
Bring on book 15, because I need more magical mayhem in my life.

The supernatural problems of New Orleans still haven’t stopped and it forces the Council and the 6 Twisted Sisters into action to deal with it once again. Dahlia (Lia), Dreya (Dre), Danielle (Dani), Dakota (Kota), Dea & Phi, work together seamlessly as always, which is why they can do what they do- besides their party business at the Willowberry Plantation. As well as the rest of the family, especially their mates/husbands. Cami and her mother help a lot in this book. We get to learn more about the brownie Puich, who is the ‘inside man’ in the morgue. Once again, Detective Payne is a pain in the butt, showing up and not believing their very see through reasons for why they are always showing up at his scenes of death. The killer is marking up the dead in very horrifying ways and as they get deeper into it, the reasons for it are very freaky. I chewed on my nails, cursed a lot, punched my pillows, and totally freaked out. I so had to have the AC on and I got goose bumps a few times while reading. The new leader of the vampires is Alexis St. Claire. I didn’t like her at all. The Twisted Sisters are forced to turn to their former enemy, Marie, Voo Doo Queen and on the Council for help with the newest problem. I wouldn’t recommend eating popcorn while reading as you might choke on it. I learned that the hard way. I love how the sisters deal with everything and kick butt along the way all while setting up for the Midnight Masquerade that will have supernaturals and mundies there. Also, finding out that these deaths happen every so often for centuries had my stomach really upset. Ugh. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Still More Never-ending Chaos . . .

The sisters are once again embroiled in trouble. This time bodies are appearing all around New Orleans before Mardi Gras season even begins. The bodies display some kind of ritualistic carvings which seemed to be used to drain their power as each carved symbol would have acted like a siphon, drawing out the magical essence while it burned -- doing this while the victim was alive. These symbols had been modified from the channeling marks they saw in one of their old books. All victims had masks on their faces, but no one knows why yet. Each of the three bodies was placed near a historical landmark. And the victims are both supernatural and mundane, so at first it was difficult to figure out the goal… except for the dead part. Now they suspect the killer was likely practicing on the mundanes and perfecting his process before moving to a supernatural victim. And needless to say, things are escalating! It seems the enemy this time knows how the Sisters use their magic and it makes things difficult in fighting back.

With no end to the distractions, this story is a continuous moving target, fast-paced and action-packed to challenge the reader. We can count on the Twisted Sisters to put us into an unusual adventure to keep us reading avidly from start to finish. Grab your copy and see if they can keep everyone safe while they try to solve this newest disaster that puts them in danger as well.

The Six Twisted Sisters are hired to plan a Mardi Gras Masquerade, but something more sinister is going on in town. Supernatural’s and even a mundane are killed in a ritualistic way. Markings reveal that the victim’s magical energy is being funneled somewhere. They also uncover a plan that involves using the parade to funnel more energy. They realize that this energy is to be used in a huge ritual at their masquerade and they need to stop it. They uncover a centuries-old cycle of killings in New Orleans and a prophecy that involves them, that they must stop in order to protect New Orleans.
This book was fast paced and filled with action. I loved it.

The sisters are once again in the thick of things as someone starts leaving bodies sprinkled around New Orleans right before Mardi Gras. Worse, they have some kind of ritualistic carvings on their bodies. On top of that, the deceased are all supernaturals.

This book has more twists and turns than a mountain road and Dahlia may or may not frequently exceed her daily allowance of Monster Ultra in order to stay on her game. Put your seatbelt on and grab the Oh crap handle, this is going to be a wild ride!

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

I read some books from this writer before so I should by now be used to an action and mystery packed story. But this book went full throttle and, although exciting, I prefer to take a breath from time to time to digest what was happening.

The characters are likable, the enemy and its minions enigmatic and powerful. I did not read many books from this series but I did not have the feeling I was missing important information. If needed some background information was automatically provided, so one could definitely read this book also as a stand alone.

The latest adventure for the Six Twisted Sisters starts with dead bodies carved with ancient power-draining symbols and wearing carnival mask. Bodies are dropping at historic locations around New Orland and the sisters are hip-deep in magical chaos.
Brenda Trim has written another delightful adventure that was delightful to read! I recommend this and all of her books. They are such a wonderful escape from the everyday normal existence.

It’s Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the twists end sisters have their work cut out for them as bodies start dropping as someone or something is haunting both supernatural and mundane. Fast paced and action packed, this has you hooked and on the edge of your seat as it seems this enemy knows how the sisters work and how to get around them but this will not stop them or knock them down and they come out fighting to the very end! Twists and turns, mayhem and chaos not to mention a supernatural masquerade ball, this is a fantastic addition to this incredible series!

The 6 sisters are working and saving NO again.

In this the 14th book about the six twisted sisters we learn how they save New Orleans from a truely horrible spirit that has killed and grabbed magical power from others for over 100 years. This awful mage took the sisters through a maze of locations to find his location, mask, locket and body while fighting his mask society. They end as they often do with a party.
I would totally recommend this book to paranormal and horror fans.

Another great book for this amazing series!

I have to hand it to Brenda Trim on another epic story in the Twisted Sisters Midlife Maelstrom saga. This is one of my favorite series by her, plus I love how it seems to run alongside my other two favorites, Midlife Witchery and Mystical Midlife in Maine, connecting every so often. Will the six twisted sisters be able to pull off the impossible again and save New Orleans? Not to mention hosting the Masquerade party of the decade after they're done? It's worth your time to find out, what a ride! Thank you, Brenda!

Ancient Ritualistic Murder

Ancient rituals, familial ancestry, and dead bodies lead the twisted sisters into a situation more challenging than they have ever faced, and I was captivated by it. This was an interesting story full of suspense and excitement. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Whenever a new Twisted Sisters book comes out, I am never disappointed. The 6 sisters never can catch a break when it comes to paranormal action.

Another excellent story from Brenda Trim. She is one of my go to authors. When I see a new book from her I have to read it. This one didn't disappoint it had an excellent storyline and the characters are amazing. It doesn't seem possible that this one is the 14th book in the series. And who can resist a series that is based in New Orleans, one city I would love to see someday.

One thing I don't do while reviewing is a synopsis of the book. You can read that before you purchase it whether online or the back of the physical copy. What I do tell you is that Brenda Trim is an excellent writer and her books will keep you reading well past your bedtime. She keeps the story flowing nicely and you don't want to put the book down. Her characters are well thought out and it's like visiting with friends when you are reading.

Highly recommend, if you like paranormal books, that if you haven't read any of the Twisted Sisters book then drop what you are doing and run to the nearest bookstore, library or computer and get the series. You won't regret it!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
