Smith was born in Villa Park, Orange County, California. In interviews, she has said she realized she wanted to be a writer sometime between kindergarten and first grade, “when a teacher praised a horrible poem I’d written”, and began writing in earnest in elementary school. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1987, followed by teaching credentials in Elementary education and Special education from San Francisco State University.

She taught kindergarten and special education for several years before becoming a full-time writer. Her first book, The Night of the Solstice, was published by MacMillan in 1987, followed by, Heart of Valor in 1990, and the 4-volume Vampire Diaries series in 1991-2. Three trilogies followed: The Secret Circle (1992), The Forbidden Game (1994), and Dark Visions (1995). The first installment of her popular Night World series was published in 1996, followed by eight more over the next two years. In 1998, Smith began a decade-long hiatus from writing, returning in 2008 with a new Web site and a series of new short stories. The Vampire Diaries series was reissued in 2007, followed by re-printings of The Secret Circle trilogy and Night World series in 2008/2009. The Night of the Solstice and Heart of Valor was also reissued in 2008. Three new Vampire Diaries installments were published in 2009 and 2010.

Smith lived in the San Francisco Bay area “with one dog, three cats, and about ten thousand books.”

She passed away on March 8th, 2025, after a lengthy illness.

I loved the original first three books and I would constantly reread them when i was younger. When I saw that there were three other books, I immediately bought them. Overall, I liked the three new books but I think there was a definite switch up in how the characters were written by LJ Smith and the new author. With the newer books, I suddenly didn’t like certain characters and I definitely got bored somewhere in the middle book but things really picked up by the final book. What I did like was Cassie and Nick. I loved them together for years and in the new series you get to see more of them together. Team Cassie and Nick!!

What happened to this story is quite tragic, the world was beautiful and so were the characters, but then, they decided to replace the author and it all went downhill from there. I actually wanted to like the last few books, I really did, but it was all so cheap and predictable, you could tell there was no love here and none of that knowledge of the world that usually only the author can have. The experience as a whole ended up being a disappointment. Still, I loved the first half and I think it works without the rest, so I'm deleting the last half from my brain.

This was an amazing read. I decided to read the entire series back-to-back, and I don't regret that choice at all; I am only sad that it's over now lol. Hopefully there will be a continuation of this series as I enjoyed it so well, and felt so connected to the characters, despite the last half of the series being written by another author. I think what L.J Smith has created here is such a good legacy and a great series for YA, but really any age will enjoy this series. I read this at 30 years old (having read book one as a teen and decided to finish the story all these years later). I like the balance of fantasy and real life issues that this story intertwined together. Cassie's longing for belonging is complete in such a fun and fulfilling way. True love for others and acts of selflessness is a great message in this series. If you liked the TV Show (that sadly ended after 2 seasons), the book (s) is a even better treat, and I highly recommend this!!!
What a great read.

Please only read rhe first three books. Compared to the vampire diaries, the secret circle is so good. The TV Show was amazing aswell and it has a wrapped up end that leaves no questions open. I didn‘t want to start book 4 after hearing it ALLEGEDLY was written by a ghost writer and book 5 aswell. Book 3 is where it ends and where L J Smith wanted it to end so I will stick to that.

My actual rating for this series is a 4.5 for books 1-3 and a 2 for the rest of the series. The author that picked up the series from book 4 just wasn't as good. I honestly wished I had stopped at book 3. It had a satisfying ending and I think it should've ended then.

Enchanting

I really enjoyed the book. It was nothing like the tv series but it had a sweet characteristic to it. It was a very easy read and the switch between authors was almost seem less. Very enjoyable.
