IZEL I know the FBI’s watching me. He’s watching me. Richard. The profiler who thinks he’s got me figured out. But he doesn’t know the half of it. He doesn’t know what I've done or the secrets that haunt me. He says he wants to help, but I’ve learned the hard way—no one really does. Trusting him would be my biggest mistake. Yet... there’s something about him. Something that makes me want to believe. But I can’t. Not when my life is built on lies. Not when I’m the one they’re all looking for.
RICHARD I’m a profiler, and I’ve spent my life reading people, digging into their souls to find the truth they’re desperate to hide. But my little suspect... she’s a mystery I can’t solve. She’s hiding something, and I should be focused on uncovering it, but all I can think about is her. I’m breaking every rule in the book, and the worst part? I don’t give a fuck. The closer I get to her, the more I realize that I’m risking everything—my career, my sanity, and maybe even my heart. The only question is, can I take it before it takes me?
S. C. Arlette writes dark, twisted romances that’ll mess with your head and tug at your heart. If it’s got danger, obsession, and a whole lot of heat, she’s all in. When she’s not writing, you can find her curled up on the couch watching True Crime or obsessing over adorable pandas.
Hmmm, I have mixed feelings about this one. I loved that it reminded me of Criminal Minds, it was different and intriguing but I'm a little disappointed. The story wasn't THAT bad but some parts felt very repetitive and unclear; half the time reading I was confused as to what was happening. Usually with thriller/crime books clarity is key, but the lack thereof hindered the build-up. From the description, I expected more.
Can You Take It? by S.C. Arlette follows, Izel, a strong and determined protagonist whose life is overshadowed by the secrets she’s desperate to keep buried. From the start, I was captivated by her resilience and complexity. She’s no spineless heroine; instead, she carries an air of mystery that hints at a past she’s fighting to protect. I'll be honest, Izel started getting annoying in the last 40%, I found myself practically yelling at her to spill all the secrets already! I was so eager to learn more, but the pacing of the revelations was excruciatingly slow.
Now for, Richard, our MMC, FBI profiler whose skill lies in uncovering people’s deepest, darkest truths. His mission is to unravel Izel’s secrets.
I liked the dynamic between these two! Their interactions were brimming with tension, suspicion, and undeniable attraction. But also, I couldn't help but feel like their relationship was missing something, felt very surface-level, and needed more development. I wish we had gotten more intimate or even everyday moments between them as a couple.
The storyline itself was intriguing enough for me to continue. At one point I did want to DNF because it felt overly drawn out and I just wanted to get to the point. I did skim some of the sex scenes, but it got to the point that it was too much sometimes. There were a lot of filler scenes, which didn’t seem to contribute much to the story. Honestly, I felt like it could have been at least 150 pages shorter without taking too much away from the overall story. As I was reading I was itching for the story to make sense and not be predictable. But that wasn't the case, I often felt confused and had to pause to recall what was happening, trying to piece together everything that was told. Also, around 70% ish I did predict who the Ghostface Striker killer was.
Also, I want to mention a 'wtf' moment around 58% where they brought her in for interrogation, and Richard.... just started fingering her during the so-called 'interrogation,' calling it 'torture.' Honestly, around this time, I thought the book was just getting ridiculous, especially since FMC became increasingly frustrating with all her secrets (most of which the reader barely knows) and her confusing backstory.
I only stuck around to see how the author managed to wrap up the story and if everything actually got explained. 😭
Overall, this wasn't a bad debut! It was different and intriguing, filled with action and lots of plot twists. I did enjoy parts of it even though it was a little confusing at times. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future!

where do i even begin? not only was this book giving me Mind F series vibes but the FMC was that GIRL. i loved the whole ghost face vibe the author put into this book; our fmc has so many secrets that we slowly discover as we follow the story my heart felt very heavy for our fmc towards 80% of the book when we learn about her past. me having a daughter named isla, made my feelings 3x stronger for this character & i don’t think i will ever forget this book!
richard.. oh richard. mr FBI agent had me in a chokehold during his interrogation scene with izel. JAWDROPPING; the way he is willing to go above and beyond for Izel just did something to me. Loved. Thank you so much to this author for letting me be apart of this arc read<3
For me personally this wasn’t it. The writing was absolutely not for me, especially the dialogues felt … off?! The tension was there but completely on the surface and suddenly they fall in love? Just like that? I love my spice and I sure as hell love it kinky but this felt so forced. The worst is that I couldn’t connect with the characters at all, they felt so flat for me … I mean the Criminal Minds vibes and the whole concept… it could have been so cool, but I ended up really disappointed. DNF 41% in
Okay, Am I the only one who got a bit lost at some points. There were a lot of secrets and lies going on. It didn't put me off i just got lost at times. I did enjoy it. It was different in a good way. I loved the whole agent/witness situation going on, and Richard, with his dominant possessive personality it was H.O.T. reading this book had me feeling like I was actually in it trying to work out 'who done it' had me hooked and kept on my toes. And it was full of surprises i didn't see coming.
thank you so much s.c. arlette for giving me the chance to arc read !! this was such an intriguing book and it had me at the edge of my seat from the very beginning ❤️🔥
the tension and tease 🫠 i would’ve folded. this is a dark fbi x suspect romance, mystery/thriller plot, slow burn, forced proximity, gun play, knife play, revenge plot !!
ssa richard reynolds could simply cuff me up and ruin my damn life … i’d say please and thank you 🧎🏻♀️ he is a fbi agent who always followed the rules and doesn’t stop until you finds out the truth. when he was brought to the case of two serial killers, they completely took over his life. every turn left him at a dead end. he’s seen so much throughout his career that it left him pushing away his feelings, making him numb. until he stumbled upon izel 🤭 he would literally do anything for her. break the protocol to protect her. this man is unhinged for her 😮💨 THE MOUTH ON HIM !! YUPPPP I NEED
izel is no damsel in distress. she’s smart and calculated. she’s always two steps ahead of everyone and doesn’t take shit from anyone. her traumatic past only gave her the strength to get revenge. she reminded me so much of lana myers 🥹 when izel meets rick, this girl literally puts him in his place. she’s fierce and such a badass 🖤 i was rooting for her every step of the way.
going into this blind is such a great way to read !! the story will unfold itself. all the plot twists and wtf moments had me GAPING at my screen 😳 the character development from the beginning to the end was actually INSANE. the tension, the chemistry, the angst 😩 i folded so many times it’s not even funny
Unfortunately, "Can I Take It" left me feeling quite disappointed. The writing suffers from repetitive language and unclear sentences, making it difficult to fully engage with the story. A key aspect of a mystery thriller is clarity, and in this case, the lack thereof hindered the buildup of suspense and intrigue.
The blurb sets up an intriguing premise with Izel and Richard, suggesting a complex relationship filled with tension and trust issues. However, the story fails to provide adequate background context, leaving readers feeling lost and disconnected from the characters. This absence of foundational information becomes particularly problematic when the narrative relies heavily on secrets and character depth.
Moreover, the book culminates in an anticlimactic ending, which is especially disappointing in a genre that thrives on twists and revelations. When the buildup does not lead to a satisfying payoff, it feels like a missed opportunity, leaving readers with more questions than answers.
Overall, while the premise has potential, the execution falls short. A better balance of mystery and sufficient context could significantly enhance the storytelling experience. It’s important for authors to consider how to engage readers throughout the narrative while maintaining an air of intrigue.
"Come with me, and I'll dismantle the system that turned us into enemies."
Izel's had a huge secret, and when she made a witness in a serial killer case, she was entrusted in the protection of the SSA Richard. As they both struggle with their own hidden agenda and getting closer, they need to fight their attraction due to the differences in their morals.
Okay, right off the bat I was hooked with the mystery surrounding Izel and her past. It was very visible that she got her scars and she went through was traumatic. I also love reading anything with a FBI profiler main character.
The romance was off, imo. I love their tension, the angst, their banter but it just felt so rushed and sudden that it was not properly executed. I wanted to be slowly ease but like putting a fish in an aquarium but if felt like I was just dropped in.
The mystery was great to follow along because I really wanted to know what happened to Izel, but that even seems confusing at times, that I need to reread a few paragraphs to get what's happening in the story. Also, the book's long for my liking.
Overall, I read this book in one-sitting that I was reading while eating my dinner because I was hooked. The outline/execution just didn't meet my expectations and that's on me, but it's good for a debut novel imo and I know the author's gonna get better so I will keep an eye out for her works.
I wanted to love this book so much because of the tropes, but I feel it isn't for me right now. Everything happens so fast and sometimes it's messy. I couldn't even feel the chemistry between the characters, honestly :(
I will try again later and see how it goes.
I apologize to the author and thank for the opportunity to arc read their debut novel <3
This story was honestly not bad at all I just feel like it was missing something and it was honestly done at a really weird pace. Like Izel and Richard’s relationship literally started with them having their first kiss at like 10%. I honestly just feel like their relationship needed to be more developed bc it felt kinda surface level for me. I mean they literally were telling eachother I love you at like 38%. The storyline was good and I understand what the author was trying to do, but I feel like it was drawn out wayyyy too much. Like there was a lot of parts in the book that happened that honestly didn’t impact the story at all. I feel like this book could have been about 100 pages shorter and it would have still been great. The storyline was really unique and the twist was definitely amazing, but I feel like it wasn’t executed in a way that left you satisfied and that every answer was solved. Honestly I was kinda confused at some points and had to really think to figure out what was happening. I really wish there were just more little scenes with Izel and Richard as a couple bc I feel like we didn’t get many of those. I feel like if we got a couple more little moments like them just having conversations about their life or them eating a meal together or even just cuddling and watching a movie would have made me more satisfied. For this being a debut novel it was honestly good, but just needed to be more developed. I will definitely read more by this author in the future!
I was lucky enough to read this as an ARC and it was bloody amazing. It's a dark romance thriller and I was guessing the whole way through. I honestly did not guess the twists at all and had no clue what was going on, but in the best way!!!!
The spice was absolutely fantastic and the interrogation scene, wow... 🔥
Izel has a tragic back story and I am so devastated for her. She is the definition of revenge and it was fabulous.
I havnt really read any sort of thriller books. The aspect of the fbi investigation in this was brilliant, really gave criminal minds vibes. There were multiple twists and turns.
I loved it!! 4 🌟 4 🌶
The plot was everything and the spice and romance was sprinkled. Fab read! 100% recommend!!!
I got the ARC version from the author herself and I wasn't expecting much. I expected it to be your basic smutty mystery story. But noooooo. It was far more than that. You go in blind and follow the FMC & MMC and see the story unravel for yourself. Reading this book I felt like I'm living the story with them. There were moments I was shocked, dumbfounded even. Then there were other that had me on my feet wanting to know what will happen. And then Love. We observed a beautiful yet some how slightly twisted in it's own unique way love story fall into place. The MMC is the love I want. He would do anything for her. The book was full of unexpected plot twists, thing I never saw coming and would never have guessed. Even though the author kept me guessing throughout the entire story. She wants you to be as shocked as the characters in her book. The character development goes along way from beginning to end its wild. Not too much but not too little either just the right amount to keep you reading. The spice in this book was definitely spicing. 100%. The tension is there and you can feel it. I loved how this book had a wonderful story and was not pure smut. The story was so good I didn't really care if there was any spice, it was just a very juicy bonus. Those scenes though. Yes! That was wild af. This book does follow and mention dark themes so I recommend reading the triggers because you mental health does matter. If you love anything and everything dark this book is for you! It releases on the 22 of December 2024. Run and add it to your tbr. Happy Reading📖❤️
I received this book as an arc! And I want to thank the author for it =]
This book had me constantly guessing!
In this book, we follow Izel, whose life is shadowed by hidden truths she is so desperate to keep hidden. From the very beginning, she is portrayed as someone so strong, and I loved it! I loved that she wasn't a spinless FMC, yet she is surrounded by an air of mystery that suggests a past that she doesn't want anyone knowing about. Enter the FBI profiler named Richard, a man whose job it is to read people’s minds and piece together their deepest darkest secrets.
The tension between these two is electric, with their interactions tinged with suspicion and attraction, and I was eating it up! What makes their dynamic so compelling is not just the romance that begins to form, but the high stakes of their game, one is trying to protect hersdelf and her secrets along with those she loves while putting end to everything else while the other is determined to uncover everything about her.
The world-building in this I have to say is just superb. The author masterfully creates a world where the fine line between trust and betrayal, love, and manipulation is constantly tested.
This book blends romance and mystery, with the suspense keeping me guessing until the very last page. The drama is both heart-wrenching and thrilling, as the Izel and Richard navigate their own emotions and secrets while dealing with external pressures that threaten to tear them apart. Each chapter feels like a new puzzle piece that I just had to put together.
If you’re looking for a book that will keep you hooked from start to finish, this is one you won’t want to miss.
This book was absolutely mind blowing!!❤️❤️ The story the plot twists oh god they had me absolutely hooked onto this book. When I started reading I just couldn’t stop like I had to physically stop myself and remind my self to stop it’s was that good. 😩🤌🏻 Also Richard and Izel they were everything 😩❤️ The tension between them was written sooo freaking well. Also the whole FBI thing was FBI ing cause DAMNNN this book had my jaw dropping on the floor it was that Damn good.
I loved how Richard and Izel were written from the complexity of their characters to their romance all was written soo soo well🤍 I’m absolutely obsessed both of them.
I don’t think I’ll be able to stop thinking about this book cause this had the best plot twists after shatter me series. 🙌🙌
This is a dark romance thriller. It's one of those books JUST when you think you know what is going on you don't. I stayed for this reason and the end was shocking! almost thought I knew what was happening the whole time but it turns out I didn't.
I also never knew could love an MMC named Richard he for sure is a top notch MMC. His and lzel's chemistry is amazing! loved some of their crazy scenes together.
I feel like this is a book you should go in not knowing too much except for the blurb.
This story instantly gave me major Mindf*ck vibes, so if you loved that series, this one is a must-read. The twists and turns keep you hooked, the action is pulse-pounding, and the spice is off the charts. Every element comes together so perfectly—it's pure *chef's kiss.* Highly recommend! 5⭐️ 5🌶
Unfortunately, this one was a miss for me. I love the FBI agent x victim idea (taboo romance) but the romance and spice in this book came off very immature and a little cringy for me.
Did not like the writing. The characters felt like they were changing personalities every chapter. I honestly cared more about the mystery than the romance, but I don't care enough to continue.
Devoured this book whole. Oh my goodness, it was so good. I was sucked in quickly by the plot and the action happening. Imagine Mind F series mixed with law and order episodes plus really good spice. I was constantly surprised and kept guessing and I loved every minute of it.
Right after I finished it I gave it 4 stars.. now the day after when I’m sitting down to write a review, and have thought more about it, I had to up it up to 5 stars. What S.C. Arlette did here really amazes me. All the twists and turns and still making it all makes sense just left me flapper gasted. The character development was amazing, the plot, the twists, the turns, the story. I really loved it.
It’s a dark romance that is action packed, emotional and ofc ✨spicy✨
First of all thank you so much to the author for giving me the chance to read this ARC of her debut novel💖
Now starting with my honest thoughts👀
I'm not gonna lie, it took me a little to get into the story and into the characters but honestly that was maybe because i'm a mood reader and I wasn't 💯 into this type of story the moment it arrived. I had to stop, wait for a couple days and then start again to give it my whole attention.
And with this second opportunity the things definitely change.
I think that this story was definitely intriguing and the second time it was easier for me to get really into it. And I mean...who doesn't want to read about an fbi guy falling for his suspect? Because that's definitely one of the reason why I asked for this ARC.
I think that for this being the first book of the author, she did an amazing job with it. Is there room for improvment? For sure, but still this is something that I actually enjoyed and that had me on my toes at times.
For me the idea and the plot itself where really good but maybe it needed a little more?... Don't get me wrong, it was kinda insane and with a little action pack and at times it was like being in a rollercoaster, specially with the plot twist that were happening right and left.
There were things that I liked and others that I didn't, I struggled a little with the timing, the lenght and at parts with my confusion over certain things that were happening...which of course for a book with mystery, thriller and crime can be not that good because clarity for me is definitely the key.
I kinda have mix feelings for this one but one thing that I can definitely say is that Izel as a character was something that I enjoyed.
Izel was a strong character (something that I love in my FMC'S) so for me it was kinda refreshing to read about her. She was a little complex and full of mystery and secrets that got me screaming at her to finally spill everything.
And even though I liked her, I can't say the same about her relationship with Richard. It was a little like insta love for me (something that I don't like, personally) but don't get me wrong, there was for sure tension between these two and attraction, but I don't know why it was that I just couldn't connect with them as a couple.
I just feel that there was something missing and that maybe they needed more dept?...Overall, this reminded me a little of the Mindfuck Series and Criminal Minds...so if you want something with those vibes be sure to give this one a chance. 🌟3.5
First of all, tysm for letting me arc read, I really appreciate it!🫶🏽
S.C. Arlette’s “Can You Take It?” is a thrilling rollercoaster of emotions and unexpected twists that will leave you breathless. With its compelling narrative style and intricate character development, the book pulls you in and doesn’t let go until the very last page.
One of the most striking aspects of the novel is its writing style. Arlette has a way of painting vivid imagery and building suspense that keeps the reader hooked. The alternating perspectives of Richard and Izel add depth to the story, allowing us to fully understand their motivations and emotional struggles.
The plot is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, Arlette throws in another twist—whether it’s Luna’s father’s shocking reveal, the heart-wrenching discovery that Izel’s mother isn’t dead, or the devastating moment when Izel is forced to kill her own sister. The trauma Izel endures is both harrowing and deeply moving, adding layers of complexity to her character.
Moreover, the pacing ensures the story is never boring. Every chapter feels purposeful and engaging, making it nearly impossible to put the book down.
While the book excels in many areas, there are a few drawbacks. The gun scene, for instance, was just not it. Additionally, the relationship between Izel and Richard develops far too quickly—his premature declaration of love feels rushed and unrealistic given the circumstances. Some scenes, while exciting, would benefit from more development to avoid feeling rushed or implausible.
BUT Despite these minor flaws, “Can You Take It?” is an exhilarating read that keeps you guessing at every turn. S.C. Arlette masterfully combines suspense and heartbreak in a story that stays with you long after you’ve finished it. If you’re a fan of unpredictable narratives, strong emotional arcs and dark romance, then this book is an absolute must-read.

WOW. This is easily one of the most memorable books I’ve read this year! Imagine Criminal Minds meets Law & Order SVU with a splash of True Detective. It had everything I love in a dark romance: unexpected reveals, unhinged secrets and lies, a wretched villain, a resilient FMC, and strong side characters. Most importantly, the chemistry between the mmc & fmc was SO delicious. I ate them up! I constantly stared at the invisible camera when this book revealed the plot twists. 😳🤯
Izel, the 26-year-old fmc was held captive in a basement for 17 years. Her family is a total mess and she went through some utterly horrific ordeals. She’s clever, cautious, calculated, and absolutely cutthroat. Rightfully so, after all the torture and abuse she endured in her dark past. When her roommate is murdered she ends up entangled with the FBI to catch the k!ller. However, there is more than meets the eye with Izel. I loved her ingenuity, cleverness, tenacity, and courage. Izel’s character development was so satisfying to read. Rooting for her happiness.❤️🔥
The star of the book for me was SSA Richard Reynolds. Y’all, ACAB has left the chat. 🤭 My man. My man. My mannnnn. 🥵 This intelligent FBI profiler speaks almost 50 languages and disarms bombs like its lightwork. He’s HOT af, a professional edger & boundary challenger. He is quite the obedient rule follower until he meets the challenging (lohl), Izel. This man took interrogation to a WHOLE new level. 😮💨 Read me my Miranda rights between thrusts, why don’t you? 🥵🔥 And if that method fails, eff all the intellectual & existential answers right out of me with candles while you’re at it.🤭🔥 Richard’s unparalleled ferocity to cast out Izel’s demons without judgment and repair them with utter adoration was beautifully written. He never saw her as a victim and let her fight her own battles, even if he wanted to play hero and take action himself. He watched in adoration as she sought revenge and empowered her to do so with genuine, heartfelt love. Their relationship kept me turning the page for more and more. I need a Richard in my life…I promise I’ll wear pants! 😇🤣 Can You Take It? was a total page-turner that kept me guessing until the very end. I highly recommend this book! Thank you for the arc!
A dark FBI/ serial unaliver FMC romance seemed like it was going to be right up my alley and I couldn’t help myself when this author reached out for me to ARC read her debut novel 🖤
Izel has found herself at the scene of a crime and directly in the radar of the FBI…for more than one reason. Richard’s instant attraction to her not only comes in handy but makes things much more complicated as he tries to unravel the serial unaliver case that he’s been working on that seems to directly relate to his new captive/ witness/ suspect’s long complicated history.
While Izel and Richard dance around their feelings for one another while also in the forced proximity of his house under his “witness protection” neither of them can deny what is starting to happen between them. When more truths about Izel’s past start to unravel and Richard is left guessing who this woman really is while Izel tries to not only hide the truth but lead them right to it.
I really struggled with this book and I’m so sad about it. The plot line and story aspects were SO good in theory but I just didn’t feel like it was executed super well. The writing and spice was really well done but the story didn’t really grab me and I felt myself dragging trying to finish this book. As a debut author I have really high hopes for what could come next as there were so many positives to this book but it just wasn’t for me right now.
If you’re a fan of the Mindf*ck series this is very similar and I feel like could’ve really knocked it out of the park. Will be keeping and eye on this author and what she comes out with next!
I just finished a another HIGHLIGHT for me this year. This book was everything and all I want.
The world she has created is full with suspense, thrill , WTF moments and breathtakingly beautiful words.
The story had me from the beginning. I was hooked I wanted to know everything , to feel everything. And the way SSA Richard slipped in my heart by his whole presence, grumpiness but also the way he’s good with gun & knives 🫠 it’s NOT EVEN FUNNY.
I loved and very enjoyed the whole topic about the crimes with the ghostface striker .. yes gimme more ! extremely exciting to reveal the truth step by step but just when you think you already know everything the next bomb explodes and you’re speechless 😫 twists and turns which you REALLY NOT SEEING COME.
izel is a real feisty FMC and such a BADDIE, I almost applauses for her actions. Her strength is really admirable and I feel sorry for her in most of the time.
ready to plunge into the absolute depths ? where you can't be sure who is friend or foe. So twisted it makes your head spin but at the same time it's like the perfect forbidden fruit. So bittersweet… so go and read it if you can take it ❤️🔥
Thank you so much for this amazing book and I’m sure you’ll move mountains with your talent. I‘m really proud of your work 🖤
This story is about Izel and FBI agent profiler Richard. Their lives get entangled when her roommate ends up dead. He’s up to his ears trying to catch the Ghostface Killer and keeps ending up with dead ends and more questions. He takes Izel into his home under witness protection. She’s definitely hiding a lot and this whole plot and storyline is a big web of lies and mystery. There is so much going on and it gets confusing at times, but at the end it all falls into place.
This was interesting and kept me on my toes and guessing. Izel’s character was shifty and odd, but given her history it makes sense. I found the dynamic and relationship progression between the two really fast, but also not feeling the connection between the two? I guess because we never got a solid timeline for how long this goes on….. the whole case really. The intimate relations between the two happened at weird times and were only minutes long. They didn’t have much conversation besides the case.
The idea and plot was great though. I loved Richard and the side characters. The best surprise was realizing who someone was towards the end…. That aha moment.
This book felt like mindf*ck book series meets criminal minds tv show. I loved it. The plot was really unique. It was higher spice than I anticipated, which was an epic surprise. And weapons play is probably my favorite trigger so thank you universe for that little diddy (knife or gun or both, read and find out!)
The character development in this book was great! Izel is so smart and calculated and she comes with a whole lot of trauma and trust issues. Richard is a swoon worthy MMC who is literally so obsessive and possessive he will do whatever it takes to protect Izel, even break protocol. His growth from a closed off rule follower to protector at all costs was a highlight for me. This was a twisty book full of tension and chemistry and you keep learning tidbits about Izel throughout the book that really explain how she got to where she is. Overall, I really enjoyed the book.
“They say broken angels rise from the ashes.”
“Why?” I whisper, barely able to get the word out. “Why butterflies?” His finger pauses for a second, then continues its slow, careful path. “Because they’re fragile, beautiful, and they’ve been through hell to get here. Just like you.”
