The Way of Becoming: 12 Practices For A Thriving Soul

Rate this book
At the heart of each of us lies a soul longing to be right with God and reconciled with others. Beyond our drive for success is a deeper yearning to find our purpose and live meaningful lives.

Yet, life can be messy and overwhelming. Disappointments and hurts accumulate, making it difficult to embrace the truth of Scripture and apply faith to our struggles. We often conceal our pain and lock away our wounds—lost dreams, unmet expectations, and betrayals. This unresolved pain hinders our ability to lead thriving lives, as outward success means little without inner peace. In our darkest moments, well-meaning words like “hope,” “trust,” and “pray” can feel empty. We struggle to know how to maintain relationships when trust has been broken or how to hope when hope seems lost.

Described as “the how of faith in the now of life,” The Way of Becoming offers an illuminated pathway for every hurting soul. It assures us that no matter how deep our pain, how weak our frame, or how significant our battles are, Jesus walks alongside us, offering healing, strength, and renewed hope. Presented in a story-based narrative and infused with Scripture, The Way of Becoming explores twelve faith practices that provide a “roadmap” for soul care to everyone that, when applied, will lead to greater intimacy with God and personal wholeness. Its twelve tools work together to help us recognize God’s presence in our lives, foster deeper relationships, and experience inner healing. With its collection of inspiring, true stories and vivid illustrations from around the globe – from Africa to China, India to Russia, Israel to Egypt – readers will embark on their own transformational journeys of healing and learn how to rise out of their stuck places and enter more abundant spaces.

Scripture beckons us all to “consider the ancient paths” (Jeremiah 6:16), and this book presents twelve ancient practices of the Christian faith in modern language with practical applications. This beautiful work will enrich and guide you in applying each practice to your trying circumstances, your soul’s condition, and the complexities of your relationships. Whether you read this alone or go through it with a friend or in a study group, every active participant in this faith exploration will encounter the Spirit’s movements in their life, taking them from wondering to discovering, needing to receiving, hoping to believing, and on to greater flourishing.

Ultimately, The Way of Becoming serves as a “Rosetta Stone” for the soul, revealing the Lord’s empowering presence in every story—even yours.

This book comes highly recommended as a practical guide to understanding the "how" of faith. Kerry has refined twelve ancient practices, making them relevant to the challenges we face today. Rather than using judgment, shame, or legalism to convey lessons, Kerry draws from her own vulnerable life experiences, incorporating prayer, contemplation, and divine guidance. She illustrates how faith is a living and dynamic practice that we can engage with at any time. In moments of need, pain, and concern, these tools can help us recognize God, entrust our lives to Him, and allow the Spirit to lead us toward wholeness, healing, and joy. Learning about the "spiral of fear" was life-changing. It taught me how to consciously step into faith so I can circle in grace instead of fear, which will spiral me into bitterness, blame, shame, resentment, anger, and despair. One of many jewels that Kerry has shared in this beautiful book.

Readers will find this book a warm invitation into Kerry’s story and a helpful reflection on their own. Kerry compassionately walks with her readers through the raw questions, deep longings, and wonder-filled discoveries experienced through the forging of her hard-won faith. This beautiful book takes the circuitous and complex healing process and maps the “neediness of now” to 12 workable practices that build wholeness and nourish strength where we feel broken or unformed. Infused with Old and New Testament wisdom, poetry, art, and attentiveness to nature’s wonders, this work is filled with insights drawn from Kerry’s first-hand experience of miraculous moments and unimaginable grief. The Way of Becoming is a darkness defying declaration that beauty can blossom alongside ashes in the lives we are actually living.

Highly recommend this book and the associated resources. I savored it slowly, and I will enjoy looking back through my highlights. The exercises at the end of each chapter were impactful for me.
