The Superpower Chronicles is a Box Set of the first three novels of the Superpower Chronicles (SC) series named Book One: Sidekicks, Book Two: Heroes, Book Three: Vigilantes. Here, Mayor takes a B team of superhero sidekicks and thrusts them into the spotlight when their mentor heroes wind up dead. Their mentor had left a note for them to disband in the event of his death, but they have unfinished business, if only to avenge his death.
Raven is a teen very much modeled in the form of Stan Lee's Peter Parker, with the pathos endemic to that character along with the quip-hurling gibes of a sarcastic tongue that he uses during fights as a distraction. He has the distinction to have been fired the day before his mentor's death and so feels the need to somehow prove his mentor wrong.
As the story unfolds, villains are introduced, a betrayal must of course form part of the mix, some of Raptor (the mentor's) idiosyncrasies are explained, secrets are unearthed with perils becoming more overt. Also, Raven has his own true-life dramas exacerbated by the need to maintain his secret identity. It turns out parents want to know where you go when you cut school. (Could it be drugs?)
It's a fun tale and although the box set is not perfect, it's fun like superheroes are supposed to be. The characters are almost paradigmatic with some nice touches. Overall, very entertaining.
