The Yellow Wallpaper
Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s landmark tale highlights the silent struggles women often faced within rigid societal norms. Its psychological depth and vivid interior monologues influenced generations of writers and sparked essential conversations about women’s mental health and autonomy.

If I Were a Man
Gilman further challenges cultural assumptions about gender roles in "If I Were a Man", offering readers a provocative “what if” scenario that still resonates today. By depicting a shift in perspective, Gilman’s story underscores the importance of empathy and expanded viewpoints.

A Jury of Her Peers
Susan Glaspell’s classic contributes to feminist crime literature by centering on women’s instincts and observations in unraveling a murder mystery. It reveals how everyday details—often overlooked by men—can point to profound truths, spotlighting women’s insight and agency.

The Revolt of “MOTHER”
Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s subtle and resonant narrative captures a mother’s stand against domestic constraints, highlighting how small acts of rebellion can lead to significant societal change. This piece underscores the power of determination within a prescribed household role.

The Story of an Hour

As a pioneering piece of feminist fiction, it deftly illustrates how societal constraints shape a woman’s sense of self, even in moments of profound grief and revelation.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935), also known as Charlotte Perkins Stetson, was a prominent American sociologist, novelist, writer of short stories, poetry, and nonfiction, and a lecturer for social reform. She was a utopian feminist during a time when her accomplishments were exceptional for women, and she served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper", which she wrote after a severe bout of post-partum depression.

She was the daughter of Frederic B. Perkins.
