His Montana Homecoming

Rate this book
Faith Shaw can't wait for another hometown Thanksgiving with the good people of Jasper Gulch. Turkey, mashed potatoes, apple pie--and this year's centennial celebration. Yet there's one person who isn't happy to be there: Dale Massey, the Shaw family's reluctant houseguest. When a winter storm strands the big-city millionaire in Montana, he is far from pleased. But the mayor's daughter suspects Dale's all-business attitude is masking a deeper hurt. Faith can't help but feel he was sent to Jasper Gulch for a reason. Can an old-fashioned girl and some holiday tradition help bring his weary heart home?

I live in Northern Lower Michigan with my husband and our three adorable dogs. I enjoy the Great Lakes, anything outdoors, and a really strong cup of coffee.
My love of fairy tales as a kid paved the way for me to create my own happily-ever-after stories. My passion grew in writing flawed characters who realize their need to trust God before they can trust each other.

I love to hear from readers and can be reached through my website at www.jennamindel.com.

A brilliant read because....drum roll please...I didn't like the hero in the beginning. Seriously. No fireworks. Not a smidgen of a swoon. In fact, if I'd read his profile on an online dating website I would have run away screaming. Okay -- maybe not that drastic, but I wouldn't have been interested. And I wouldn't have picked him for Faith Shaw. So why is this a brilliant read? Because the author slowly peels away the posh façade that Dale is hiding behind so her readers get to see the gem of the man beneath. Wow! Toe-curling character development turned Dale Massey into one of my favourite fictional heroes. And Faith knew he was worth it all along. Clever woman. Loved the way their relationship developed, along with more hijinks and surprises and familiar faces in Jasper Gulch. You don't need to have read the other books in the Big Sky Centennial series, but if you have you'll feel like you've come home when you read His Montana Homecoming.

Book about a complete jerk demanding HIS DUE, and I just don't need another Scrooge in my season.

Additionally, the writing is weird:"... which is why his father made him in charge..." MADE him in charge? PUT him in charge. And that's the very first page...!

And the author doesn't even seem to know what she's saying. How about three pages later: "Staring out at the vast land untouched by concrete or steel made him feel small and unworthy" followed ONE paragraph later by: "...this landscape whispered a challenge, a call of adventure".
You can't have it both ways, Mindel. Is it intimidating and uncomfortable, or is it exhilarating and exciting? Or do you even know? Because it sounds like words are just being spat out at the reader, to fill a page.

It'd be nice if this were a book that didn't contradict itself, came off as awkward, and wasn't about not-so-inspirational people in a 'Love, INSPIRED' book. But alas, here we are.

If you want to read a really sweet, good Savior-centric holiday book about a big-city guy stranded with a country family? Try "The Substitute Guest", but Grace Livingston Hill. It's one of my absolute favorites, and makes this nonsense look like drivel.

Another one for the cast-off pile...!

His Montana Homecoming

First off, I haven't read any of the other books in this series, but I felt the book was perfectly fine to read on its own. It's the typical lightweight entertaining read....but it's extremely well written. I identified with our protagonist Faith Shaw so much, having been shy myself when young. I too had to increase my self-confidence and learn to be content in my own skin. What was surprising to me is the development we see in Dale Massey, who frankly comes across as an arrogant unpleasant man in the beginning. Little by little, though, we see those superficial layers melt away to find the caring, sincere man at the end - someone we could all learn to love! This was a perfect book to read when you just want to read something relaxing and fun in the evening before bed. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads, but the words in this review are my own.

Can a multi-millionaire who hasn't been in church in years be happy with a down-to-earth girl with a strong faith in a small town with only one road in and out? That's the story in His Montana Homecoming, the 5th book in the Big Sky Centennial series. Dale Massey, a relative of one of Jasper Gulch's founding fathers, has come from NY for the town's centennial homecoming celebration. Faith is the mayor's daughter who LOVES her hometown and the sense of family in it. As the townspeople continue to investigate the mystery started in the first book, Faith works to share small town life with Dale.

I couldn't get behind this one. The romance felt forced all the way through, from page one. Maybe because the characters in this were more introspective than in the past centennial books, I felt like I wasn't shown the development of their relationship and their feelings, but I was told about it. In the other books, there's a lot of interaction between the characters, where you can see the gradual buildup of romance and love, and while Faith and Dale had a bit of that, I just didn't buy it, and the last of that spark made the whole book feel a bit flat to me.

His Montana Homecoming by Jenna Mindel, is the 5th book in the Big Sky Centennial series as well as a stand alone novel. It has not been my favorite but it is a sweet read, and a great book to sit back and relax with. It had a little bit of everything; family, friends, love, passion, humor and mystery. HMH comes to a satisfactory conclusion in my opinion, but with the promise of more to come in the one last book by Arlene James, Her Montana Christmas.

The first book was my favorite book int he series. This may be number 2! This book had a little bit of Christmas in November and a lot of hope. The hero in this story was so realistic. I loved his assumption that Shaw Ranch was some sort of B&B and he "ordered" Faith to park his car. But the 2 hit it off...

I also like Cord and his overprotectiveness toward his sister. The mystery of what's going on continues. I think Robin holds the answers...

I so enjoyed Faith Shaw's story and how she met her match in multimillionaire Dale Massey.
Dale Massey did not on any terms want to be in Jasper Gulch, Montana, even if it's for the town's Centennial Celebration. Upon meeting his host Faith Shaw in an awkward first meeting Dale just wants to get done with his business and back to New York asap! God and the Shaw's have other plans in store for Mr. Coldheart.

It's that time of year again! Cheesy Christmas romance read! It delivered:) I could never tolerate the clueless big city guy who not only can't take care of himself in the woods, but doesn't like to get his hands dirty! Seriously a major turn off! But good for you horse girl! Glad to see he eventually figured out how real men dress. I'm not one for this much ridiculousness, but did love the small-knit town feel. It filled it's purpose... fantasy romance brought out by Christmas spirit:)

This was such a great Christmas story. I loved how the author portrayed the characters. Dale’s transformation was believable and I loved Faith’s patience and willingness to wait on God’s timing. I really enjoyed reading this story and would definitely recommend it.
I won a copy of this book in an online giveaway and was not required to give a review.

"This latest series installment contains many comical scenes with Dale, the city slicker stuck in the country. The residents of Jasper Gulch display the meaning of small-town values and sense of family" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).

Faith Shaw came back to Jasper Gulch after trying Seattle for a time. Dale Massey has never been to Jasper Gulch, but that's where his ancestors came from. Will the town's centennial celebration spark there interest?
