Of the series, this one has the most questionable changes. The removal of Graypool’s scene(s), the skimmed retelling of Stonefur’s death, Blackfoot being renamed Blackstep (which may have been in the previous books, I forget) and him requiring help to kill Stonefur—this last one I presume will cause the most problems since it’s a huge part of Blackfoot/step’s character arc, but now must be shared with two other unnamed characters for no reason other than, what? Make Stonefur seem stronger? Lostface’s reaction to meeting Princess is changed to her appreciating the way Princess acts? Which felt way out of character and like they just wanted to handwave away Lostface/Brightheart’s arc. Also the dogs are dobermans instead of rotweillers, but I don’t think that one ultimately matters to the story.

The changes also make this one feel the most like it would be difficult to follow if you haven’t already read the source material. Which is my reason for a docked star.

Onto more positive things—the ART in here is just… OH MY GOODNESS! SO beautiful! Especially the full spreads in StarClan! The colors, the backgrounds, the character designs and expressions! I’m truly saddened to see this style going away in the next book. They really did knock it out of the park, and of the trilogy, the amount of DRAMA portrayed in this one is top tier.

The story, while streamlined, is still A Dangerous Path and The Darkest Hour. The inclusion of the lion from the original cover art was both adorable and moving.

I totally cried at the end. Spottedleaf’s final message to Firestar, and the StarClan cats behind him during the battle… It just… I got major waves of nostalgia off that imagery. (And now that song from the Allikatnya AMV is stuck in my head.)

Here’s to hoping The New Prophecy will be just as good!

Well, it happened. The Warriors franchise gave in to a portion of their fandom, and not only formally introduced gay characters, but retconned an already established male friendship in the franchise.

Ravenpaw and Barley were first shown to be living outside of the clans in an older graphic novel, Ravenpaw’s Path. Just two male cats, that were friends, living in the same barn. In the new graphic novel series, that is a comicbook retelling of the original 6 part novels, The Prophecy Begins, they have added dialogue to Ravenpaw where he directly calls Barley his mate.

For years the online fan community created art and fan fiction retelling their story as a homosexual relationship, eventhough the original creator of the series was on record stating that since that was not how cats act in real life, it would not be in the novels

I guess it was only a matter of time, but this does affect my previous Warriors book reviews which clarified that there were no gay cat characters.

These are books written for children. Let me preface this with that statement. CHILDREN!!! And yet, so many cats die within these pages. It’s heartbreaking and I can never feel like my favorite is safe.

I think this edition has the prettiest art so far... but I think I said that about the previous two as well! Absolutely stunning, I hope some of these panels are available as large sized prints one day. I cannot wait to see the art in The New Prophecy trilogy too.
I never thought a graphic novel could make me cry.

quality art, junk content.

Although the overall storyline was the same as the chapter books, and the art & coloring was wonderful, one major change ruined the entire book.
Originally Ravenpaw just lived at the barn with Barley, but now he refers to him as “his mate”, and is seen blushing while saying it.

This pushing of liberal agenda is absurd for a children’s book.

Oh, wow. this book was so good and so violent at the same time. "A dangerous path" is my favourite book in the series and there was a lot of emphasis on that, the only thing I would say is missing is Snowkit being carried off by a hawk but then that's very traumatic and this is a kids book. Also when does Runningwind die in this because last time I checked he was alive but he's in the starclan ceremony. this book is so good I am so glad it exists now. I would actually give a zillion stars but that's not a number. I have literally been waiting since April to read this

It left out some parts, but overall it was pretty accurate. I don't like how they made a CAT be gay, like what is that about? Cats just can't do that they are just not like that!
I do think they did really good at the art style- a little gory, but all the same the novels have just as much. They skipped over how some deaths happened and who saw it- or they just did a brief thing saying "after someone died this happened". Yes this book is really good, yes it's my favorite out of this series, yes I would recommend it to a lot of people, yes I really was waiting like a year for it to come out, yes I pr ordered it so I got it the day it was published, and yes I really think this is a good, fantastic, intriguing, and amazing book.

Ohhhh man I have so many thoughts on this volume!! First of all, Firestar and Sandstorm are ADORABLE here. Same with Cloudtail and Brightheart. Second, this portion of the story gets so brutal at times, so I wasn’t sure how they were going to portray it—but I think it turned out really good! The art in here is really dynamic and conveys the intensity well. So many beloved (and even some not-so-beloved) cats to say goodbye to 😭 I can’t wait for the New Prophecy adaptations!!

Hmm. Low four stars this time, I think. This was another beautiful addition to this series, but it definitely still has some flaws.

Let me start by talking about the art. It’s beautiful, obviously. The colors are so vibrant and well-rendered, and the cat drawings are beautiful as always. I love the balance between serious, dramatic frames that look like paintings, and the silly, goofy ones in the corners with unserious cat faces. I do still think the fight scenes were a little hard to follow, but there was an improvement in this one, at least with smaller fights. And I do acknowledge that part of that issue stems from the medium; there just isn’t enough room for 20 extra frames of a fight scene to make things smoother. I love all the character designs, and I think the artists did a fantastic job making each cat unique. I do wish, though, that all of the impact frames and smaller ones interspersed kept the cats’ original colors. Oftentimes, especially during fight scenes, the artists turn the cats, say, blue, or pink, or another unrealistic color to draw attention to that frame and make it pop. While it’s a neat effect, it did make telling cats apart tricky for those specific frames. In the future, maybe toning those down would help with keeping characters and movement straight. My only other critique is more of a personal thing: I wish they didn’t shy away from showing blood and dead cats so much. I understand that these are still technically children’s books, but having vague red smudges on cats’ fur takes away a bit from the stakes, since they don’t look wounded. And Warriors never shied away from describing brutal, gory scenes, so I wish we’d seen some of that in here. They did do a great job with Brightheart’s injuries, though.

Now for the real issues: the story. Once again, I understand they had to condense two books into one here. And I think they made the right decision making the first book the shorter one, this time. But there were some serious missteps this time, less with the pacing, and more with the scene decisions. Darkstripe trying to steal Tigerstar’s kits was glossed over, as was most of Bramblepaw’s conflict about Tigerstar. Ironically, I think Tawnypaw actually got more focus. . . Though the Gathering reveal seemingly moments after she left was also very rushed, and in my opinion one of the only pacing issues. Runningwind’s death is also barely mentioned, because he dies on a Thunderpath in this book, which feels underwhelming and really weird. Thankfully, Tigerstar’s still pretty scary, but I do wish we could have had the shock of Runningwind’s death, too. But most importantly: what the heck happened with the TigerClan scene? Why did we entirely skip that? That scene is MONUMENTAL in setting the tone and stakes for the final book, and this story just glosses over it entirely. Graystripe goes BY HIMSELF without telling anyone? Firestar just. . . Let’s him go? Ravenpaw doesn’t get to team up with them as a final hurrah of the original trio? We then get TOLD what happened instead of shown; Graystripe loredumps it after the danger is already gone, so it feels really anticlimactic. I think that was a big blunder in an otherwise pretty solid book.

Last mistakes to comment on: the overemphasis on words was back, which was pretty annoying. And Blackfoot is repeatedly called Blackstep for some reason. How did that get past the editors?

But let me end on a positive note: It’s really the little things that make these books so entertaining to read, for me, and this book delivered. So, here are my final thoughts: I LOVED the way Bluestar was drawn as she lost faith in StarClan, there were some frames of Scourge especially that were absolutely chilling, I’m so happy Ravenpaw and Barley are confirmed to be mates in this canon, anytime the word ‘loaf’ appeared to describe a cat I died laughing, and Barley’s mustache returned in all its beautiful glory! (And of course, the behind-the-scenes ending sketches did not disappoint!)

Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with this book, and I’m very excited to hear that the series is continuing with The New Prophecy!
(Oh, and if the artists ever get to Power of Three and are somehow reading this: I really hope you find a way to put a yellow bush in front of the top of Ashfur’s head, or something, so he can have his iconic blonde hair for a frame or two:) That would be amazing.)

my inner child was healing and living etc etc. I have no idea how these function as like, stand-alone media though. The pacing is absolutely bonkers, and it was sometimes too much even for me. But I still had a blast.

I’m only going to write one review for this whole adaptation of the first series because I view them as one complete story. I was so excited to start reading these. I am not kidding when I say I read the entire Warriors series probably 10+ times as a kid. My cat, Rusty, is literally named in honor of this story’s Rusty.

The first time I ever experienced these stories was when my mom would read them to me and my brother before bed. Reading these graphic novels whisked me back to those evenings when I’d hang onto my mom’s every word. I mourned every death just how I did when I was younger, and it was so much fun seeing the designs of all the different cats and comparing them to how I imagined them over the years. I think the illustrators did such an excellent job capturing both the unabashed wonder and surprising violence depicted in this series. The art was so cute and beautiful.

True rating for all three entries in the series: 4.25

This book was amazing!! The art was INCREDIBLE and the best official art so far! (Not that the art from the other books weren’t spectacular as well) I loved the use of colors and the contrast between pages. I also really loved how the leaned into the more intense and gory side of the warriors books and included lots of blood, wounds and the correct amount of violence that I’ve been waiting for in a warriors adaptation. Not that fighting cats is good but it’s part of what the series stands on and I’m happy to see it done well. This book brought back that sense of pride and honor that rubs off from the characters which originally was what made me love the books so much. This time with BEAUTIFUL art that really reflected the original series! Character design was also excellent with some of my favorite designs introduced being Brightheart, Scourge, and Tawnypaw.
I’m so happy Ravenpaw and Barley were made canon!!!

I think I liked this book better than the previous novel. Even though I've read the series, there were still moments that came unexpected. It's really nice that everything (the characters to the setting) is drawn in the way it is discribed in the books.

I have to start this by saying, I love these graphic novels. It's clearly obvious from reading that the people adapting them are truly passionate about the story, characters, and world. The art is completely gorgeous, and the way it characterizes everyone (even with a generally lighter tone than the original books) is spot on, and even expansive! Each one is truly a labor of love, and I don't believe they could have done any better on what they had.

Emphasis on 'what they had.'

These books, while great for what they are, suffer significantly from the pacing issues that come with cramming two books into one. Some important events are cut, (such as Whitetail's death in book 1) or are told differently. While this isn't a problem in and of itself, the issue really stems from the fact that they are still trying to fit in as much as possible. I appreciate this! However, the result sadly ends up being that there is barely any breathing room between significant scenes. While those scenes themselves are often spectacular (all of the full-page spreads in here were completely gorgeous), it still feels rushed.

This is not on the part of the people adapting it, though. For cramming this story into only 3 books? They did an incredible job. I wish, though, they were given more than that. A single graphic novel for a single Warriors book is very much plausible. It's not as if kids won't read them if there are more books. (Look at the Wings of Fire graphic novels! Those adapt a singular book, and they're thriving!)

The scene that probably bothered me the most about this book was Stonefur's execution. Now, I haven't read the original books in 8 ish years, so my details are sort of fuzzy, but the way it's told really didn't sit right with me. Everything is recounted second-hand, and it fails to encapsulate the horror the original had. No doubt this comes from them trying to rework it to fit the pacing. Which, I understand, but I really, really wish it were included in full. Similar to A Shadow in Riverclan. (I may be biased, since that is my favorite side-story graphic novel, but still). That book, though, was built around that scene and how it traumatized Feathertail, so the fact that this book doesn't emphasize it as much makes sense...but I still was personally hoping for a bit more.

Despite my complaints, I still stand by the fact that these are probably the best thing to come out of Warriors recently. I tend to judge Warriors books in general under a specific lens, expecting mistakes and generally poor writing as a baseline, and being surprised whenever they do something good that, in any other book, would just be standard. These graphic novels, though, are genuinely good. Not for Warriors standards, but for regular book standards. Not perfect, sure, but still good. And really, I couldn't have asked for a better adaptation within a 3 book constraint.
