If I could have given this book 6 stars I would have. I loved the first in the series and this second Highland Wishes book was even better.-5-star review, Amazon reader It can be read as part of a series, or as a standalone book. -5-star review, Amazon readerAnya’s been a bad girl. A vindictive plot against one of her clansmen backfired, resulting in her grave injury. Scarred and crippled, she finds nothing lovely about herself, and doesn’t expect anyone else to either. But when a magical wishing box sends her to another dimension, she becomes the most valuable prize imaginable. While hunting a rare marbled boar, Riggs, a trapper in Marann’s western forest, hears a strange cry. Distracted from the hunt, he loses the sow but finds instead something more valuable than a whole cart packed with marbled boar skins. A woman. She is delicate, and her ears are curiously rounded. She is not wolfkind. Maybe she is the miracle his people have been hoping for. Riggs must bring Anya to King Magnus, because breeding rights belong first and foremost to His Majesty, who needs an heir. But the female calls to a primal part of him. He longs to keep her in secret and take her as his mate. But if he gives in to the temptation, he could single handedly bring about the end of civilization.
Jessi lives with her husband and children in the Seattle area. She’s a passionate reader of all genres of romance, especially anything involving the paranormal. This book works so much better with this authors writing style then historical fiction does. All the weird pacing is now just magical and the learning things later then really needed explained by culture shock and language barriers. It really worked. Anya is someone I hated in book one and man she was so good here. A genuine redemption story that totally worked for me. And her wolfy boo? Amazing. The story was emotional and intense and magical and engaging AF. Total win. There is a weird fixation one woman’s reproductive organs I wish hadnt been a thing but it’s not something that bothered me to much, but it might bug others so keep that in mind.
I went into this book unsure if I’d be able to finish it as it’s a little more fantasy than I usually indulge in… wolves/humans and it was in a different realm. Additionally I was unsure about the heroine because she was not my favorite in the previous book. You know what they say when you assume…….. o.O
Characters: Anya, the woman I loathe in Wishing for a Highlander. She was a she-witch who stirred up nothing but trouble. I disliked her with a passion. Needless to say my expectation was to continue to dislike her. You can imagine my surprise when I realized I liked her as a heroine 5-10 minutes into the book. A broken and scarred Anya is not the one who I disliked so vehemently in the first book; she was a different, no better person. I was pleasantly surprised by how remorseful she was. She also was feisty, smart and loyal. I swear she’s one of the best heroines ever. Riggs, our hero is a Wolf-man. He is lonely and would like a mate but due to the shortage of women (so to speak) he has to save money. He just happens to be in the woods hunting when Anya unceremoniously drops into his realm and is immediately set upon by unsavory men. Despite being attracted to her, his loyalty to the king will keep him from claiming her as his own. Riggs was such a good guy! Saves damsels in distress and kicks butt in the process. He was smart, loyal and a worthy warrior. By the end of it, I wanted my own Riggs! As you can see, I loved the leads. For most of the book, they are the only characters. The secondary characters came towards the climax but there were not steady secondary characters.
Plot: Anya goes back to her home in the Highlands to make amends and submit to the Laird, despite his punishment. She runs into Aidan who is looking for the infamous ‘box’ – Within minutes she’s been sent to another realm. When Riggs lays eyes on Anya, he realizes that she is the woman from King Magnus’s prophecy… she can save his people. Despite his personal wants, he is loyal and will do anything to save his people so he makes plans to take her to King Magnus. The trip is rife with action! The men who initially found Anya are chasing them but others would also set upon them once they smelt her scent and realized that she was a woman. So the question is, who can they trust? Lots of twists that made me go “whoa” and some betrayals as well. The villain dude *I won’t even attempt to spell his name lol* was terrifying. If I’d been sent to him as a “play thang’” I’d probably faint on the spot. Just saying.
Narration: Marian Hussey knocked it out the park as she did in the first installment of this series. I loved the little lilt she gave to Anya’s Scottish brogue.
Steam Factor: Mild – There’s a lot of pining and a few hanky-panky scenes but nothing too bad. Sex scenes didn’t dominate this plot (Another score for Ms. Gage!).
Overall: Another a delightful surprise. I couldn’t believe I enjoyed this book so much, especially considering that it’s outside of my comfort zone. Also, I usually like a hefty dose of secondary characters but this book lacked that yet I still enjoyed it. The characters and plot were so well rounded. As with before, Ms. Gage has MORE tricks up her sleeve, I was completely blindsided by at least 3 of them. I’m excited for the next installment of this series (especially if/when it’s on audio!!!). I hope that we’ll get to see King Magnus’s story. Mix: Great characters, plot, magic, twists + romance and you get an unforgettable romance! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
P.S. I find it odd that Aidan is always around when something magical happens. I have to wonder if he is what we ‘think’ he is.
Mmmm.....dirty, sweaty, well built men in kilts....that's what I think of when I think of Jessi Gage's Highlander series. I got to read her fabulous first book Wishing for a Highlander (click here for review) and just fell in love with her writing style. Luckily, she allowed me a sneak peak at her second book in the Highlander series called The Wolf and the Highlander.
So was it more sweaty men in kilts that make your toes tingle? Actually....nope! Big, well hung wolf men from another realm who appreciate women for all the right reasons--that's what awaited me in this exciting sequel!
Now before you start thinking "Oh, it's a werewolf book" let me just stop you right there. It is and it isn't. I found that the male characters were not your traditional werewolf stereo type. There was no "light of the full moon" craziness. They kinda just were always...wolfy. And apparently very hairy. Like Tom Selleck hairy in his bare chested Magnum P.I. days. They're the kind of hairy that makes your motor rev and your toes tingle!
Here's a quick plot synopsis: Anya (the bad girl from Book 1) is now crippled. Both of her legs were broken in a dramatic fall and everyone in her village assumed she was dead. However, she recovered with the help of a friend and decided it was important to return home, admit her wrong doings, and hopefully, not be put to death in the process. It's a gamble, but she wants to redeem herself. Of course, redemption does not come easily. Before she can ever ask for forgiveness, a magical box (the same one that caused all the trouble in Wishing for a Highlander) whisks her away into another realm.
And let me tell you what...this realm is sorely lacking women. Especially breeding women. The last chick born in that realm is pretty old so when a woman like Anya enters the picture, she causes a stir. In this case, it's the wrong kind of stir, and Anya is almost taken by some really nasty wolf guys who do not have any sort of honorable intentions. Lucky for her, she is rescued by Riggs--and apparently he is walking sex on a stick!
Together they escape from the bad guys and head towards the city where King Magnus is waiting for them. A long time ago, the king had a dream about a girl who would come and save his kingdom. She would have distinct marks on her and carry a special stone.
Guess what? Anya fits the description and she happens to have a special stone that allows her to understand the language of the place she is currently in. Riggs is pretty sure the King will want to claim Anya as the mystery girl in the picture. But there is a catch...Riggs wants to claim her, too--even though he knows it's wrong.
Mistaken identity, revenge, sexual heat, and some supernatural shenanigans really set this story rolling along. I read it in one sitting and can't wait for Jessi Gage to write the third one! The characters were well developed and very human. I didn't like Anya in the first book and wasn't sure how the author would be able to redeem her. But she did! By the end of the book, I was rooting for Anya to have a happy ending. Riggs is a great hero. Strong, confident, but always trying to do the right thing, Riggs tugs at your heart strings and gets your blood flowing in all the right places. I had my doubts about King Magnus, but once again, I was surprised at how his character turned out. I really hope he will be the main character in the next book. I need to know what happens to him and his newly found love interest.
Let's talk sex....yep. There is some. It's good stuff, too. There was lots of build up to the big moment, but definitely worth the wait!
Better then the first one in the series . Loved the main characters which was a bit surprising because I was not an Anya fan in the first novel. The epilogue made the book so much better.
A title with 'Highlander' evokes a certain type of historical novel, set in Scotland, with one or more brave kilted men and beautiful strong women. The actual story is really completely different. I found The Wolf and the Highlander to be a unique tale. A fantasy with an imaginative setting, earthy characters and a truly compelling plot.
The setting is an alternate world populated with people that are the descendants of humans and wolves. They are know as wolfkind. There are two nations at war with each other, vying for rare and highly coveted females. Larne treats females as little more than slaves. Maran treats them like royalty and pampers them. Still, no females have been born for a very long time, so the sudden appearance of a female, even if she appears to be from far away, gets everyone's attention.
Anya has made many mistakes in her past which she is ready to atone for. An accident has made her lame. These two aspects of her character make her a very down to Earth young woman and someone I liked almost immediately. Anya has been magically transported to this world of the wolfkind. Fortunately, she is found by Riggs the Trapper. He is the ultimate humble good guy. Strong, handsome, protective. Also very down to Earth – or whatever world he lives on. Anya and Riggs are very accessible characters: lonely, flawed and full of wonder for the newness each has brought to the other's life.
The storyline is elaborate. There is the evolving romance between Anya and Riggs. Their romance is undermined by the fact that Riggs must deliver her to his king because there is a prophecy that foretells of the arrival of a human female that will save the world. On the way to King Magnus, there are all sorts of troubles in the way of Larnians hunting for Anya and Maranians that want to exploit her. So Riggs gets to play hero and Anya is pretty tough herself. And there is political intrigue and betrayal to deal with.
If you like audiobooks, you ought to check out this book in that format. The narrator, Marian Hussey has the voice of a storyteller. I really enjoyed listening to her tell this tale. Her talent for accents helped to bring the characters of Anya and Riggs to life.
The Wolf and the Highlander is fantasy in an historical setting. I found the setting to be vivid, the characters accessible and the story fascinating. It is the second of a series, but reads just fine as a standalone. I was delighted to received the audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed the story very much. I had thought that the story would be paranormal with a shifter wolf but it turns out that the guy is a wolf-man. The story is very different to what I always read that reading it was very refreshing.
I hadn't read the first book to know Anya's past but from what she told in her POV I think she is a very hateful person in the first book that we see how much she regret her mistakes and all the vile things she did in the past. She was remorseful in the book. You can actually tell how vile she was in the first book without reading it and can tell that she is now a better person. She is smart, loyal to her mate, and was fierce. I like her very much.
Riggs is the hero and wolf-man that happens to find Anya when she was about to be rape by Larnian men. He was happy to have found a female for his own but when he realized that she was what his king had been waiting for he was torn by his attraction to Anya and his loyalty to the king. Rigg is very loyal, smart and very protective of Anya and a very fierce warrior.
Needless to say I love both hero and heroine. The whole book is compose of the main characters and how their relationship bloom and the secondary characters were introduced in the later part of the book. The king was hateful when he was introduce in the beginning but began to like him in the end and was deserving of the loyalty of his people.
The story has a great world building with great characters with a great plot. It is filled with action, magic, mayhem and romance.
This is the second book in the Highland Wishes series. I really enjoyed the previous book in the series about Big Darcy and Melanie and wasn't sure I was going to like Anya's story since she was a hateful character in the first book causing problems for so many.
Surprisingly, I grew to really like Anya because she took ownership of all the bad things she did previously and was ready to be judged even if that meant her life would be ended. As a consequence of her misdeeds, Anya was severely injured with 2 broken legs and scarring to her body including her face. Her legs didn't heal properly leaving her in pain and somewhat disabled. After staying with the gypsys and healing as much as she was able, she returned to her village to face her punishment. She unwittingly takes a portal into a new world, where she starts her life over.
Her new world is populated by wolfmen, and there's a serious shortage of women making Anya a prize to be fought over. She meets Riggs who is duty bound to take her to the king even though he wants to keep her for himself. There was lots of action, adventure and twists which made for an exciting story. Looking forward to the next book in the series!
First off let me say I loved this book! I thoroughly enjoyed her previous book in this series about Big Darcy. I was shocked this story wasn't a time travel story like the first, but she was sent to a different realm. It was nice to read a tale with new views and story. It wasn't the same old werewolf or time travel book. There was lots of adventure and intrigue. Old characters return from book 1, and we meet new, exciting (and some brutish) characters. I was shocked how much I liked Anya in this book considering what vile things she did in the previous one. However, one doesn't necessarily need to read book one in order to understand this one. The author does a great job of recapping the important bits through this book. I do recommend book 1 though as it's great fun to read. I can't wait for the next book in this series!!!!
One of the cool things about this book is that the heroine, Anya, was actually the villain in the first book of the series. So this is a story in which she gets to redeem herself. After what she did in the first book, I wouldn't have thought she could be redeemed. But the author pulls it off. As a consequence of her misdeeds, Anya is severely injured, and her legs don't heal properly, leaving her scarred and somewhat disabled. And then she unwittingly takes a portal into a new world, where she starts her life over.
This new world is populated by wolfmen, and there's a serious shortage of women, making Anya, despite her disability, a prize to be fought over. The king wants Anya for himself--but Anya falls in love with someone else.
This is an original and well-written novel featuring sexy wolfmen, a flawed and three-dimensional heroine, and themes of redemption. Recommended.
Well, that was much more delightful than I anticipated. I honestly thought I'd end up abandoning this because the blurb sounds out there for me. Wolf-men? This could go so badly... It was rather entertaining instead. The adventure is fun and the romance is sweet. The people aren't overly wolfy. Some fur, pointy ears, and slightly sharp teeth are no big deal. I was also rather fascinated with the world building and legends of the people. More stories Riggs, more stories!
This book can totally be read as a standalone. Anya is a character from the first book, but there's only one small reference that might make someone pause to decipher.
I don't usually read romance much anymore, but I was asked to read The Wolf and the Highlander for formatting. I jumped at the chance to get a first read of The Wolf and the Highlander, if it was as good as the first book, Wishing for a Highlander. And it was. The characters are real and drew me into the story. Redemption is a theme, and I loved the growth of our heroine. If you're looking for a fast, exciting and romantic read, pick Wishing for a Highlander and the second book in the series, The Wolf and the Highlander. You won't be sorry.
This was fun. A lot more than the first book in the series. We're talking wolfkind men *noms* and we're talking a little magic between worlds. There are hairy men, but in a good way (in my mind, anyway) and there's an evil gone good heroine. I really liked Riggs' character, and I even liked Anya almost from the very start of the book. That's a fast reader's opinion change on a character. I tend to hold grudges, too. So I give two thumbs up to Jessi Gage for that achievement. LOL
Now gimme book 3. Assuming there's going to be book 3. We still have Anya's sister to figure out, right?
loved this one! its been a while since I've read a book like this and now I can't seem to figure out why?!?! I loved Riggs, I mean who wouldn't. This was a great story with plenty of background and I enjoyed that they didn't give into their wants at very first. I'm ready for the next book, I need to read about the baby(hopefully a girl) and of course Magnus and Seona. I also think it'd be great to read about Travis as an adult and I don't know maybe falling for Riggs/Anya daughter?
I was initially a bit confused, this is more of a paranormal romance than a highland one. However, the world was well done and I truly grew to like the characters, even Anya who I hated in the last book. I hope for further novels set in this world... there are definitely subplots that could be flushed into a novel or two.
This second story in the Highland Wishes series was truly outstanding and I loved it. Jesse Gage has a wonderful flair with the development of her characters. Her story telling keeps you interested and wondering just what will happen next. I can't wait for the next story. Highly recommended.
This book was captivating enough not as good and intriguing as the first one but good enough.
It's no secret I Hated Anya. Hated her and wanted to murder her. She was a vile, horrible bitch who traumatised Darcy (Protagonist of the first book), deceived her clan laird in the most personal way, and almost killed Darcy. In the beginning of this book I hated her still and didn't really buy the whole reformed act, but as the book progressed I realise I didn't hate her as I first did and actually I started liking her. Her character evolved quite beautifully.
Riggs is a Wolf-man (half wolf and half fey), he lives in a different realm, a dying world where women are few only about 153 remaining and only 6 thousand men remaining in the whole world. He belongs to dying species and he knows it. one day while hunting a rare marbled boar he stumbles upon a treasure more precious and rare, a woman. She is different, with round ears, blunt teeth and her body is hairless. Even though she is not wolf-kind he feels pulled towards her. He wants to claim her but knows he has to take her to Chroina, to his king, to keep her safe and because her arrival had been prophesied, she is to save his people and it is also known that she belongs to his Majesty, King Magnus.
The Wolf and The Highlander is a nice book. Fun and captivating. It had a cute love story, an adventure and great characters. King Magnus was a nice character; I really wanted to read more about what happened.
Overall, it had an interesting storyline and is a page-turner, although it felt a little slow at the beginning (Or it could have been just me as I was constantly interrupted) it quickly picked up speed. The ending felt a little abrupt but otherwise, it was all good.
I loved this story! The performance was really good, but three quarters through, the high pitched voice of the heroine started to grate. Same occurred in the last book with her southern accent.
The only thing that bugged was that in the previous book, this heroin was a selfish bitch but then all of a sudden changed into a kind, caring woman in this one. I know she had an accident and physical trauma, but that doesn't all of a sudden humble you. Especially not in 5 months. And having broken both her legs, 5 months is not long enough to have gone through surgery and physical therapy, let alone having recovered without surgery in the middle ages so much so that she's galavanting across hills, mountains, and on uneven ground without any pain meds, not even laudanum. I know this as fact, having had physically debilitating trauma with surgery.
So I felt there needed to be more about how she changed her stripes. More on how she went from the villain to the heroin in 5 months.
Other than that, great story and still much better than the last couple I've read/listened to in the last few days by much more well known authors. I've been pleasantly surprised by this authors series. An author I'd just stumbled upon in Audible.
Some who read the first book in the series declared they would not read this one because of strong dislike/distaste for Anya, the villain in book one and heroine of book two. The first error in that stance is the failure to read or understand the histories of the evil characters that led to their misguided actions. By the end of book one it was clear that Anya was beginning to change. The second error is to forget the childhood fascination with stories that teeter on the boundary between reality and fantasy. You will need a lot of that memory in book two. Wolfkind living in an alternative reality? Yes please! Kind, compassionate, and loyal men of that species? Yes please! Love between human women and Wolfkind men? Yes please! Evil characters able to time travel at will to reach their goals? Maybe not so much but what's a good story without a little tension? If you're ready to believe in the fanciful as you did during childhood, this is the story for you. Beyond that, watch Anya find redemption and become a true heroine, not just the main female character. I loved this return to the delights of childhood in an adult format.
Anya the local bad girl in the first book was left hanging between two cliffs after trying to kill to gain power. Now she is scarred and a cripple. But the magic box has transported her away from her destiny in the highlands. Now she is in an alternate world where humans are not in charge not even known there. Wolfkind roam the area and there is too few females that they are revered. Riggs happens to be the lonely wolfkind who traps for a living. When he saves her from the enemy he is duty bound to take her to his king for protection and the answer to their prophecy. The travel is not without many perils and trials to get her to safety. The enemies are not always known but those who conspire against his king is getting bigger. Along the way they bond and are worried about secrets both are keeping from the other. I did not like her in the first book but fell in love with her in this book. The narrator did a great job in this connection. Will be reading the next book, listening, soon.
Wishing For A Highlander (Book 1) was a great read and I rated it 4-stars. The Wolf and The Highlander surpassed that rating and I wish I could rate it better than 5-stars.
My reading Kindle etc is usually in the "read aloud form" but this was an audio version with the narrator being the male and female voices and she was fantastic.
Not a single negative to state, if Book 3 reading enjoyment only comes close to Book 1 and 2, I will be a happy reader.
Don't believe I am spoiling your read by letting you "kin" that "Wolf" is not human but nor is he a shifter. Lots of sexual tension between the main characters but not a "sex hell yeah" shelf for me even though the act occurs. That is an area I look for in my reads but when I got to the end of the book, it was a secondary part to the main characters.
What a tale! I love finding a book that grabs so hard you get lost in it. This one does exactly that. Having read Book One, it was difficult to imagine cheering for Anya, that manipulating, lying, thieving, little.... But. I didn't even get to the end of Chapter One before it was happening. And Riggs is a most perfect male. Gage is gifted in the Character Development department, but her stories are even better. This book is beautifully crafted---the flowing words, the swelling plot, the forever in the happy ending. I, for one, hated to leave Chroina.
Ahem. Welllllllllllll, this book isn't quite my genre. In the first book of this series, I chose the book because it was about time travel and romance. (I am a huge fan of the Outlander series). I was a bit shocked to discover that this sequel is more in the fantasy/magic kind of realm. I had a hard time visualizing what these wolf men must look like. There's plenty of sex... lots of sex and while I'm not a prude I get a little flustered reading (in my case....listening) the graphic details. Whoa! The book is what I call "as if" with lots of battle/fight scenes. Anya was a bad person in book #1. Now, I see her in a different light and she became more likable. I think she was pretty repentant for things she had done in her past. So, will I read book #3? Maybe. Probably. I'm taking a break and returning back to my favorite genres-- historical fiction, mostly.
