About the author

April Boulware writes haunting psychological horror with a heartbeat.

She blends gothic atmosphere, slow-burn suspense, and raw emotional depth to explore what it means to survive the unimaginable – and still hope. Her work often centers on women reclaiming their stories after spiritual abuse, trauma, and isolation, with threads of found family and quiet romance woven through the dark.

April draws inspiration from her own past in a cult-like, abusive environment, and the long road of healing that followed. When she’s not writing or reading something ghostly, she’s probably reorganizing her planner, sipping strong coffee, or chasing a story idea down a rabbit hole.

She lives in rural South Carolina with her husband, three children, and a bunch of chickens, where she homeschools by day and writes by night.

When Angels Run takes place in the prohibition era when underground speak easy’s flourished and working women satisfied hungry appetites. We are introduced to Sally who was taken at 12yo and thrust into a life she didn’t want. Now 31, she lived a life full of violence from men looking for a quick fix. Enter Kirk who sees ghosts, has hallucinations, is always high and keeps a secret. When Sally finds herself miles from home in a bed she doesn’t know, she meets Kirk. Kirk knows he’s seen Sally before but was it all his imagination during his dreams or not.
The development of this story was terrific. There was a little spice, a little murder but a whole lot of great writing by the author. Character development especially of Sally from a meek girl doing what she’s supposed to and being submissive to a woman who knows that she can take charge of her life was fantastic. And I’m not gonna lie, but I totally was into the insane world which is Kirk. But ma’am that ending, that cliffhanger, ugh I can’t wait for the second book to come out. I need to know what is going to happen!
