Twelve stories of the daily lives of working-class people from the North of England. Stories include: The Human Element; The End of an Old Song; One of the Virtues; A Lovely View of the Gasworks; Gamblers Never Win, The Little Place; One Wednesday Afternoon; The Actor; The Fury; The Drum; The Search for Tommy Flynn; The Desperadoes.
An exceptional set of stories. In all seriousness I’d compare the best of this lot with Maupassant. Certainly gives a gloriously real picture of the North in the fifties and sixties. Which gives one good reason for reading them. The main reason is that they are superbly crafted and very readable. I enjoyed this book very much.
“Those walls had held our year of hope and happiness; our little failures, and, above all, our success. It was because of this that I knew I should remember it for the rest of my life.”
